The five witches of the New Orleans Coven each have an elemental affinity, a commission from the city to keep supernatural events in check, and a lot of perfectly reasonable reasons for being alone. But as each witch meets her perfect match, these enchanting women discover love in the most unexpected places. From quirky French Quarter hat shops and elegant Garden District masquerade balls to the fog-shrouded End of the World, love comes in the form of best friends, occult enemies, and complete strangers. Because when it comes right down to it, the Crescent City casts its own mysterious conjurings on everyone who sets foot on her marshy soil, and even the most extraordinary members of this spell-wielding quintet can’t escape the magic of love.
Listen this was kind of bad. It feels like the author just put 5 potential storyline concepts on paper, the called it a book. When in actuality it's an idea notebook.
2.5 Stars, Does exactly what it says. 5 short chapters following 5 different witches falling in love. It does feel like these could be 5 different ideas for 5 different books, and I think it would have worked better that was. Not much magic considering the witches, and almost no character explanation or development. But it was alright for what it was.
✧ What I Liked ✧ Uh. We got a bunch of different love stories with some LGBT representation. That was neat?
✧ What I Didn't Like ✧ WHY did it have to be witches and then have the stories NOT prominently feature witchcraft? Like it's there... but not enough for someone who came for the witches. This could have just been better as regular human romances. Instead, I got my hopes up for witchery and was sorely disappointed.
Not to mention that each story really were too short for me to really care much about them.
✧↠✧ Overall Enjoyment / Impact ✧↞✧ 【★☆☆☆☆】 I should have read the reviews beforehand.
I have no one to blame but myself for this decision!
Went in expecting witches and magic with familial bonds or cute romances, but events while interesting at times were rushed and not expanded on.
Next time, I'll pay closer attention to the synopsis since it was indicative that this might be a story of five witches. Drum roll! It was exactly that, different mini novellas in one short story. At times some characters made appearances, but for the most each is separate.
The insta-love, you guessed it, predictable especially with the length. Often times I was just as clueless as the characters when they would indicate, "Why am I attracted to someone I just met?" Your guess is as good mine, buddy! Never did understand it though.
I genuinely feel this could have been so much better if the stories were expanded and intertwined with one another. There needs no inclusion of a villain just a little spark to get the plot flowing, which then make me want to root for the romance!
This had potential if the author did whole novels instead of super short stories. I physically cringed at certain points. I feel like if each story was longer and fleshed out I would have enjoyed this a whole lot more. Really only finished this because it was a short audiobook.
I don’t see why this is so short when it could have been developed a lot better. i literally thought it might be apart of a series while listening to it… but no. it was cute but really nothing more
I like a short story as a little palette cleanser in between either chunky books or some of the psychological disturbing books I read. I understand there’s only so much you can do with a short story but the author did absolutely nothing with this one.
Nothing happened. It was boring. I wouldn’t recommend.
This was absolutely fine for what it was. Basically just 5 short stories about a coven of witches and their relationships. You never get to delve into the characters or the worldbuilding and all 5 of these shorts felt like they could have been whole stories. I did like the author's writing and I'd be interested to read something full-length from them in the future.
I don't really know how I feel about this book other than I am just really underwhelmed. In theory, this had so much potential. 5 storied of 5 witches finding their person within a magical sub-political atmosphere within our own world? That sounded like something I would eat up! Unfortunately, each story was more like a chapter when they should have been their own individual books. If this were a series, I think it would have done way better and it would have given the author to expand upon her characters and their lives. It's a shame because I was actually really excited to read this and I really wanted to love it.
The problem with novella collection like these are that they leave you hanging. I wanted more from these five couples. Especially Lyla and Gabrielle. But besides that, I had fun and enjoyed myself a lot while reading this. It was a light summer read.
"Love, hate and friendship can be confused so easily."
Their love stories are presented, in parts. I've never read a book structured like this before, which intrigued me.
Everything was short and to the point, no unnecessary descriptions. The stories were interesting, cute and very romantic. Not all emotions, gestures, appearances, details, events have been described in detail.
I don't feel that I was disappointed because I really didn't expect more.
It's worth reading/listening to pass an hour or two.
This was a really cute and well written anthology about a coven of elemental witches living in New Orleans and I honestly thoroughly enjoyed it. I listen to it as an audiobook while just getting ready for the day and living life. I think a big reason why I liked it is because the author at no point in any of the stories used insta love as a way of the to love interests getting together. And even though there was not a lot of time for world building I still got a good sense of their magic and how things operated and it helped that it was in modern-day New Orleans overall was a good short read.
should’ve dnfed this because it gave a whole lot of ✨ nothing ✨
the author would’ve been much better using this idea to make a 5 book series following each couple rather than 5 short stories, I couldn’t even tell you a single characters name & it was just so lacklustre
I listened to the audiobook of this and it was a quick read but you’re honestly better saving yourself & reading something else 😭
It’s exactly what it says on the cover. Some fun, witchy romance short stories. It’s not entirely for me (I didn’t connect to the romances at all) but the worldbuilding and magic system was fun. If you’re looking to just take a short break between reading larger books, this works well.
2.5 * I think these would be so much better if it was 4 separate full length books, the characters have great stories and I love the idea but you have no time to love them or see any development.. definitely would read a full length or longer Novella version of each story!
entered 2022 with the intention to rate books more kindly such a good title and possibilities such a disappointing collection of hallmark movie love with the tiniest tiniest bit of steam (zombies with flowers...)
Magic - almost none New Orleans - basically shops and picnics Witches - no spells, very little magic, moving candles
5 mini novellas without a lot of interconnection. Quick instalove instead. The world building and character strengths were nice but not enough to maintain.
It's 5 short stories that have potential and not much actual depth. Each story really should have been fleshed out a bit more. They could have been great.
I think the best things to compare this to are the movies Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve. A bunch of intertwining love stories that end as quickly as they begin. More of a concept than a full story, which is also the same pitfall that some of the "Into Shadow" collection of short stories fall into.
It was...eh, okays. Could have been better if each short story was a full length novel, or even a much much longer short story. It really has the potential to be an interesting world to explore! Sadly, everything happens without much rhyme or reason, or is cut short just before the good stuff happens. This should be the prelude to an actual series, rather than just a standalone short story novel.
