One man, one woman, that’s how wolf shifter’s find their mates and mine is supposed to be the next alpha of our town. But when I kiss Mason on my eighteenth birthday, he rejects me politely, but firmly.
So I leave town, not giving a damn about the succession, determined to make it as a lone wolf.
And I do. I’m strong, capable, able to take down almost any wolf shifter I go against, when I get the call. Dad’s in hospital and I need to come back, to care for him and determine his successor before outright war breaks out.
So why do I feel like a little girl all over again?
I’m right back where I started, being expected to find my true mate, but what if instead of one, there’s several? I know I need to choose, and my heart has: all of them.
I just couldn't get through this, couldn't really understand most of what I read. By 44% I was really at a total loss. This girl, was upset about being rejected? So left? Or was it being alpha? Because she is kinda of upset that her dad doesn't understand? Understand what? That she doesn't want to be alpha or that she doesn't want to stay where her the man she liked rejected her? Again? Who entirely freaking knows! This books drama is all over the place, and not once really explained. These guys? Really? It's not that their bad, it's that they are dropped in here and there like nothing. Some even are from her past who she loved? Jesus how many men was this chick just inlove with! Why did she leave because of mason and not Dylan? And what's with her acting like a daddy's girl? She left and didn't even want to come back, she even refused his calls? Why? The man isn't even written as horrid to her yet it's like she just honestly didn't care, and once he's about to die she's all breaking down crying for him? She literally gets back in town, gets hot and bothered, then decides to finger herself in the shower before going to see her dying dad? This book is a hot mess of ridiculousness and unexplained holes? And another thing, why doesn't she want to be alpha? It's not explained at all? What is this!???
None of the characters are particularly well-conceived and the AU is ambiguous and contradictory. Nothing is explained well. Paige ran away when she was 18 because her “fated mate” rejected her, but the author doesn’t explain any of it. They kissed and he declined to have sex with his boss’s teenage daughter who had been creeping on him since she was a child. How much time has passed since she left town? No idea. The author didn’t get into it. A month? A year? 10 years? However long it has been, the only thing that the fmc ever thinks about are the instructions from her boxing coach, whom she also has an ongoing sexual relationship, and is the brother of her mate. Because that’s not next level squick. Now that her father has died, she is going to choose a new Alpha for the pack by having them all fight one another. No, thank you.
This book was intense and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Zack is what dreams are made of: dedicated, compassionate, and insistent that Paige was stronger than she thought she was until she believed him. Paige was fierce, proud, and broken by losing her father and resistant to the idea of staying in her backwards hometown. All her new guys had their positives and negatives (not gonna name the guys cuz spoilers) including stoicism, goofiness, protectiveness, self-hatred, and dedication to what they cared about. I’m excited for the next book!

Gotta say this is definitely different to the other work Sam has produced. . The pace of this book was vastly different to what we have seen from Sam and I enjoyed it. It really let you soak in the emotion and impact of the situation she was writing about. There was a lot more details and you feel transported into this world and everything feels a lot more tangible. . The characters were great. I love Mason, he is an enigma. There is so much depth to him and so many things he is battling within himself that could be misinterpreted. I’m looking forward to seeing how his character keeps growing and where he ends up by the end of the series. Zack is the opposite. He makes it clear what’s going on with him which I like but I also feels that he lacks mystery but I don’t mind that at all. It was interesting seeing them navigate coming back together and then how they moved forward. Made for an interesting read. . I found it hard to relate to Paige. I don’t know what specific thing that made that so but I found it hard to connect emotionally with her and pinpoint her personality, mainly in the first 50% so I’m curious to see if I overcome that in the next book. Otherwise she is a great character. I do see her strength and can sympathise with what she goes through but for me personally there’s a disconnect. The other characters were great. I’d love to see more conflict maybe between the families otherwise they were well written. . A new take on shifters, which I love. The world was well developed and written. The new aspects on shifters kept me engaged and wanting to learn more and made me curious to see what else Sam will come out with. The story is original and enthralling. Very emotional in the beginning and entertaining. I’m very interested to see how this story plays out and I hope we get a lot more action in the future.

Lone Wolf is the first book in the Reach for the Moon series and tells the story of Paige and her mate(s).
First of all, I want to talk about the cover. I really love the cover and it’s also the reason that I decided to check the synopsis and request an ARC of this book. I really love the colour combination and the girl in the middle. I’m a sucker for strong females on the cover! But the cover isn’t the only good thing about this book. The story was so addictive and interesting, and I couldn’t put this book down. I really loved Lone Wolf and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!
Lone Wolf tells the story of Paige and her finding her mate(s). After reading the synopsis, I was really curious about this book. When I started reading the book, I loved seeing a trigger warning. This book deals with death and grief, and I thought it was amazing that the author put a trigger warning in this book. The death and grieving scenes were really emotional and I had to cry a bit.
Paige is such a strong character. I really loved reading about her because she’s really brave. She left her town and dad to find her true self and I admire that. As for the men, I really liked all of them. There isn’t a single one that I didn’t like. I’m really curious to read more about Micah and I’m really excited for Paige and Mason!
Lone Wolf was such a good book, and there were so damn plot twists. The brothers thing really surprised me, and I even gasped out loud. And the ending… I’m so angry. I really want to know how Paige’s story is going to end and I really want to read her happily ever after. Lone Wolf is the first book I’ve read by Sam Hall and it won’t be the last one! I really loved reading this book and it’s an amazing first book in a series!
Let me start this off by saying even though I was excited to read this from the first time Ms. Hall announced it, I held off because the rejected mate trope is not my favorite and I've had a tough time reading the majority of them. I love fated mates with shifters and I love how Ms. Hall writes shifters, with the way that she balances the animalistic and instinct driven side with their human side, so I took a chance and I'm so glad I did. If you're reading this and you're hesitant over the rejected mate aspect of Lone Wolf like I was, I appreciated how it was written here. I don't want to spoil the how's and why's of what happens so I'll just say that there's conflicted feelings and a greater reason for what happens, also there's no cruelty.
As for characters, Paige ran from her pack following the rejection and she's honed herself into a fighter, physically and mentally, but she also has strong emotions and vulnerability (that combo is one I really love in main characters). She isn't afraid to stand up for what's needed, whether that's the pack or her own needs. Does she always make the best choices and communicate perfectly? No, of course not. She's returned during an emotional and challenging time and I liked that Paige wasn't able to be perfect through everything. The characters who are supportive around her also recognize this and step up, although some characters of course don't get it.
So far I'm also really liking each of the guys I consider to be hers and what they bring to the table. There's a mix of guys she has history with and new love interests too. We haven't seen a lot from some of them yet and there is a question over who exactly will be in her final group, so I'm crossing my fingers and toes for a couple of them. For anyone who wants to know, since a lot of Ms. Hall's books do include it, there was no MM in Lone Wolf and I don't see hints of any developing (but I can't know for sure). What's definitely present is loads of sexual tension and steamy times alongside emotional connection.
There's also moments of humor, grief, family drama, and pack politics. The grief especially hit me hard and I cried multiple times during this book. Paige has returned to her pack because of her father's illness and subsequent death and there are a lot of feelings surrounding that and the secrets and events that unravel. The world building felt like it needed a bit more for me in places, but there was enough that I didn't feel lost and the focus was on Paige anyway. The writing is on-point and the pacing of this story was fantastic. There's a doozy of a cliffhanger at the end but book 2 is already released while I'm writing this and book 3 is on pre-order, which should be the final one from what I've seen. I enjoyed Lone Wolf so much, getting lost in Paige's world.
I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
I know – surprise, surprise. Not my fault this woman is absolutely genius.
Paige grew up in a very archaic pack based town – raised as the princess who would decide the fate of the next alpha. Instead she ends up running off to the city to become her own person. However she is forced back home to face everything she has run away from. Sam Hall started this as a stand alone – but it kind of morphed into a lot more and I look forward to following Page’s story as it carries on.
I will start my review with a quote:
It was pitiless, endless, this illusion of Mother Moon as this gentle nurturing goddess fucking bullshit, because where the hell was my peace?
This is such beautifully written grief. It was absolutely breath taking. It is epic genius that turns a reader to tears for a character they don’t even know yet.
Throughout the book you are introduced to each harem member one by one. I love this. I love not having them all thrust in my face at once and having a change to appreciate them each on their own. It also made it so much more enjoyable because even though you think you know who it’s going to be – you are never completely sure who Paige is going to choose.
My fist balled, and I punched him in the arm. right as he burst out laughing. Had he been playing me or was any of that serious? You never knew with Declan.
Every girl has a type. No matter how much we may sometimes deny it. Mine is the funny guy. Declan is my type for sure. I love a guy that can make fun of himself and laugh while doing it. And then still manages to look sexy AF at the same time. Added in the bonus of their past history so you’re never quite sure what’s going to happen with them next.
SOMEHOW, I was a contestant on the worst dating show ever.
This dating show thing is super exciting. I loved trying to guess who we will get to fall in love with next.
I was always told the moment a girl takes her mate is one that transforms her life.
I adored Zack. He was that dependable guy that was always there just holding her up. I wish very woman could have someone like that holding their back.
Excellent story line. Every moment had me glued to the pages and I could not put the book down once I picked it up.
I freaking loved it! This was my first read from this author, recommended by a friend and it was fantastic! Such a great twist on the shifter/fated mates storyline. That ending had me yelling at my iPad and book 2 can’t come quickly enough!
Well that was uneventful & mildly boring. I found the discovery she made about her maternal family expected. 🥱 I may read book 2 as the plot “just” got POTENTIALLY interesting after that medical examiner’s phone call.
I got a bit lost on a few parts of this book, Just too much in her head thinking drove me crazy. BUT from one Aussie to an other Aussie Sam hall I love reading our slang and the was we talk. Loved all you other books this story line was great don’t get me wrong I enjoyed it just some parts not so much..
'I did not like it' is the most neutral review I can give. This story just wasn't my thing, but others might like it. The author gets points for drastically improving her editing process, but the main character in the story was all over the map. She fell in love (lust) very quickly, with multiple men, even though she supposedly still had strong feelings for the one who rejected her. Claimed to be a daddy's girl but never contacted him once in 5 years after she left. Claimed to hate the old-fashioned lifestyle of her pack, yet came back to deal with it. Oh, and it's reverse harem, that wasn't clear in the blurb. I think that should be mentioned for those of us who don't really care for that in a story. Multiple mates for the alpha female supposedly goes against everything werewolf where the pack has one strong alpha. Plus, it ends in a cliff-hanger. If you like very steamy, reverse harem, wolf-shifter stories (they don't spend much time in wolf form) and don't mind a very contradictory heroine, you might like this book.
This book is a pretty good story but has a particular spot that makes it outstanding - I think Paige's inner commentary during the vigil has one of the best descriptions of grief I have ever read. I cried ugly tears during it.
One thing I know about books that make me cry, reading something that brings that intense emotion, is this is a book that will stay with me for years.
I liked the FMC and liked how we learned about each of the various men in her life.
I really liked this book! I am all about the rejected mates trope right now, and this one was done very well.
So I will say that we don’t begin with the rejection or a huge backstory. It’s present day and Paige just received a call home, from the guy who rejected her, saying her father the alpha is in the hospital and she needs to come home after five years away.
The world of theirs took a little getting used to, because it a matriarchal society. The next alpha is chosen by who the current alpha’s daughter chooses to mate with. There is mention of true mates and such, but I was a little confused at if other wolves feel like that or it just didn’t fully apply to Paige?
I really enjoyed how this starts, and when there are flashbacks to the past, it’s not forever but still emotionally impactful. I did find that the rejection isn’t as bad as it usually is, so it makes Mason redeemable for me.
I like the little bits of backstory into the guys, like Declan and Lorcan, and I was excited to see how them and Micah come into her harem. I’d love to see a few extra POVs sometime.
Zack though, was perfect, and if there weren’t the reasoning of her being a nix (basically a succubus), it would’ve been hard to accept her needing anyone but Zack. He’s the best apparent mate, and I loved that he was around.
The mystery toward the end started to get the action rolling more, and I really enjoyed that. I’m excited for book 2, and I can’t wait to see how this all unravels and if there’ll be a sixth addition to her harem 👀
Though I was a little confused in the beginning, I fell in love with this story of wolves and rejected mates and deception. It's a twisty love story with some beautiful imagery and moon worship. There's this group of scenes where the women in Paige's family prepare for a funeral and the steps it took to sit vigil were magical. I felt the reverence and grief in their preparation and execution as though I were really there, an awkward outsider trying to understand this complex world. Books are magic, I swear.
I'm intrigued to see how the story unfolds. There's a mystery to solve and a complicated relationship to put together and community responsibilities that need sorting out...so many little pieces to set.
I'm loving it. And the best part was dreaming I was in Australia last night with several mates whilst running through a forest in a wolf's body. Just lovely. 💋
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when reading this book but I have to say it didn’t disappoint whatsoever. I you’re thrust into a world where having multiple mates is frowned upon but Paige doesn’t care and learns to embrace who she is.
I don’t really have any cons for this book other than it was a bit slow sometimes and I found myself skimming some parts. The world building is great as well as the characters. I think for me it just had too many flashbacks of the past which is understandable and I’m glad she did otherwise I’m sure we wouldn’t have gotten a deeper look into who the characters really are.
Holy smokes that cliffhanger! I did not see that coming at all! I also love everything that Paige stands for and can’t wait to see more in book 2.
This is a new author to me and I definitely will be reading more of her work!! The characters were well developed in the storyline was intriguing and captivating. Paige is reluctant to come back when her father is dying because she knows she is his heir and doesn’t want anything to do with pack politics. She would luck gently surrounds herself with a great group of guys- Mason, Zack, Declan, Micah and Lorcan. Some of them have history with Paige and some of them don’t. Will she be able to choose just one mate? I can’t wait for the next installment of this fantastic series!!!
Started a bit slow for me & I almost quit. Weak females are a turn off even if it's just emotional weakness like extreme low self worth or ridiculous submission, but this didn't go there. Alpha females cannot possibly be submissive in any way as that's what makes them alpha. So this story of a girl following natural instincts that aren't the 'norm' & being supported is intriguing. There is, of course, mystery & hidden agendas, some resistance from possible mates, etc for titillating angst that doesn't overwhelm the flow. I'm into it & wanting more.
This book was so great. Paige goes through so many different things and it compounds on her. Her issues are clear on the pages and her work towards getting control is well done. I loved the male main characters. They are all so different and easy to ID. Micah is probably my favorite male character. That ending! It left me on the edge of my seat and now I’ll be here eagerly waiting for the next book.
I cried my eyes out with this book. It was so wonderful, you could really feel all the emotions that happend in the book yourself. It was a wonderful first part into an new shifter world!
ARC Review by The Dragon Den * * * * * Loving me some shifter action. Paige is one hell of a woman that has to go through so much, including a slow burn romance with complications and a few steamy scenes here and there which are just so very necessary. What is to come? I have no idea...but I am interested to find out.
Sam Hall's new book, Lone Wolf, is the first book in a new possible duology (although it could be turned into a series) and it was a whopper.
This paranormal reverse harem has family issues, archaic wolf politics, romantic drama, and some really cool wolf shifter mythology, I loved it. The characters were fantastic. Paige is the main female character and she's oddly relatable, she's the alpha's heir but just wants to live life on her terms, not being dictated to what she is supposed to do however she was willing to do what was expected of her when it blew up in her face she decided that it was time to do what she truly wanted. Even after everything she came back to handle the responsibility that was handed her. While she was gone she picked up serious skills, Paige is a trained fighter, she stands up for herself, and while she does deal with anxiety and a couple other issues she manages them. Paige is a strong and capable woman but she also is vulnerable at times and leans on those she's close to.
One of those people is Zack her boss, friend, and personal trainer while she was away. Zack had my heart in the first chapter, I was just done. Zack's compassion, support, his trust in her, I could see how much he cares about her, his willingness to do what's right for her, their bond was so touching. As for the others, Paige did well. The bad boy who is tatted-up and has such deep emotion that he hides, but is respectful, the high school sweetheart who is light-hearted but emotionally invested, the strong but silent one who will take whatever she can dish-out, and finally (for now, anyway), the protective dumbass, who has always been there. I love these guys, I can already see the support and love they are willing to give and I have a feeling Paige is gonna need it.
Some other characters need to be mentioned. Paige's Dad for one, while he wasn't in most of the book, I felt his character, he was very much present, in the town, in his enforcers, in his family, and most of all in Paige. He was a strong and caring alpha but more importantly, he was the best dad he could be and that is shown more and more as the book went on. Then there is Stevie, Paige's friend in town, there is something about her and some of the lines have me guessing that she might not be what she seems and I have a feeling of who she could be and I am excited to see if I'm right. Finally, there is a mate contender who is shady as hell. The attraction is there but something seems really off with him, Paige senses something but his actions have me believing he's responsible for something that can't be forgiven for.
Sam outdid herself with the plot of this book, it was very engaging and kept my wheels turning and my emotions high. Parts of this book were told in flashbacks that added a lot of depth to the story and helped me understand the characters and relationships better. Something that I've never come across in a paranormal book is the grief being as big as it was. It wasn't a scene, a chapter, and then the character gets over it, it wasn't just the main character feeling it, grief was a process and it was present throughout the book but not in an overbearing way, it didn't take over the story just added to the emotion. Also, it was several characters feeling it throughout the book, the character who died was loved and respected and it was felt in the story. There is also some wolf shifter mythology that I have heard of but love hearing more about it and seeing Sam's spin on the mythology. I loved it and hope to get more information as Paige's journey continues.
Then, because this is a paranormal romance, we get into wolf shifter politics which was crazy. Paige's hometown is so backward, men are the power-holders and while they don't treat women horribly you can see that they believe men are more, I don't know. This book is a feminist movement story, this town is stuck in old ways that have no place in the current world. This book is about feminism, owning one's sexuality without conforming to what society thinks is right, about a woman owning her own power and being who she is meant to be. It's a very positive and strong message that Sam is sending out, all wrapped up in a sexy paranormal.
I really loved this book and Lone Wolf ends on one helluva cliffhanger that has me asking the question "whodunit"? I have a couple of theories but I guess I'm gonna have to wait until the next book to find out.
What a phenomenal story! I absolutely loved Lone Wolf. Sam Hall has such a creative imagination and her storytelling is one of the best I’ve seen. Lone Wolf definitely does not disappoint. This story is full of emotion that just emanates off the page, wafting over your skin, filling your every pore with pain, heartbreak, lust, and love.
Rejected and heartbroken, Paige leaves town, only to come back 5 years later when tragedy has struck her family. Coming home opens past wounds, and saying things get complex is an understatement. And now it’s up to her to choose the next pack alpha. Should be simple enough right? But life is never as easy as we think it will be. Paige no longer feels pulled to the man who rejected her. Well, not just to him. Five years is a long time away and Paige has forged herself into a strong and independent woman. She’s also learned to love and the current man in her life follows her home. Matters of the heart have always been complicated.
This story is full of so many twists and turns. Secrets abound. And at the heart of the story are these incredible characters that Sam Hall manages to get you to fall in love with. The characterizations are incredible and the character development lends itself beautifully to the relationships between Paige and her harem. I love that Paige is strong and can take care of herself and she isn’t afraid to stand up for herself. But she is also able to take action for the good of the pack.
With every book, I fall more and more in love with Sam Hall and her writing. This story was fantastic! Though there is a cliffhanger, book 2 is out and ready to satisfy.
I was so hoping this would be better than it was. The plot isn't the problem. The multiple men are not the problem . The delivery was the problem . These sentences literally mash together till I was confused about what I read. I contribute this to inner thoughts of the writer like they are seeing where all this is going and mapping it out .The problem is ,I'm not the writer and not in their mind to see how it connects to the finale story. This is the worst way to deliver a story plot ,keeping confusion but wanting reader to stick it out cause it all comes together in the end .....for me that's a no. I lost any care I had for all these people ,their problem or backward views on women . The writer dragged me alone a briar patch to get me to the berries but I decided I don't want all the scratches just to get there. The plot is a good plot but everything else.....no. Leave out most of the writersplaining and repeating thoughts about her having to choose .Start it more layman simple chapters instead of all the italic script threw in there . Its hard to say how it could be better cause for me reading it I got headaches and frustration and really don't want to wast my time saying " wait ,what ugg" and try to reread to get it . Carries on in other books and Ima have to leave it there . 😔
Paige had stopped thinking about the day she would inevitably be called home, but she had hoped it wouldn't be in the event of her father being hospitalized. When she returns she is put in a position to find a mate and assign an Alpha to lead the town in her father's absence. But what she hadn't realized was that she was more than she had originally thought she was. She was a being of wolf shifter lore that took several mates instead of just the one. So now Paige not only has to assign a new Alpha for the town but she has to find all the missing pieces of her heart and claim them as her own otherwise her call will continue to drive the available male population crazy with need. But there is also someone who may have played a hand in her father's death and she must gather her mates to her side as she searches for them to exact her blood revenge.
There are books in the industry where you read them and you can't understand why none of the big publishing companies have picked them up yet. Then there are indie books that you can tell are potentially something done by an author who is still learning their craft. This was one of the latter. The storyline shook from time to time. The twists were not all that surprising so they lacked the punch that they needed to hold undisturbed attention. The formatting needs some use which I read from the book's forward to be an ongoing struggle that seems to keep cropping up issues. The editing for the book seems to have been subpar if that is the case. I found myself struggling to connect with any of the characters. They all felt very one dimensional and lack a bit of draw that I would have liked them to have to pull me in.
I almost DNFed the book from the very beginning when the word 'vajayjay' was used. The infantile terminology made me a little uncomfortable what with the fact it was meant to be a reverse harem with sex around every corner. If you can't even call it by its real name or the romance genre's widely accepted term then it throws it in the young adult category in my mind which this was anything but. It would have been different if the character was saying the term, but it wasn't. Just... no.
I will say that there was at least a little bit of interest in what would happen with Paige and her mates because I will likely read the next book in the series. I think that was found within Mason's dynamic with her. He wasn't as quick to throw away all his independence and commit himself completely to Paige like he knew he would have to eventually. His push and pull while frustrating held my attention a bit and made him the most intriguing of the characters for me. The lackluster cast was disappointing but Mason saved it at least a little.
Admittedly I was drawn to the plot of this story but put off a bit by the rejected mates concept. I'm more a fan of guys being "all in" and I rarely feel the male(s) who did the initial rejecting in those stories ever fully regain my trust or their redemption.
Having just finished book one, I am kicking myself for waiting so long. This book was gold.
Part of what sets this story apart from a lot of other rejected mates stories is that we're learning about the rejection years after it happened and the fmc has moved on with her life and taken control of her future and is actually in a pretty good place at the time she gets the call that her Father is in the hospital and she needs to come home.
Another thing that really helps you feel okay with the rejection of the one potential mate, is that you are likely falling in love with Zack, who is a friend, mentor and deeply loves Paige and his actions express that so beautifully.
Paige (fmc) is also not a push over or someone wallowing in the pain of that past rejection. She is fully capable and willing to move on. Her maturity and balanced view made watching this play out enjoyable rather than miserable.
There is a LOT going on in this story, and some of it was very emotionally draining - primarily because Sam Hall is such a talented writer. There is the loss of a parent, so much guilt, confusion and fear over what Paige is learning about herself, and hope and joy as she accepts certain parts of herself and finds mates that help her feel whole.
Book one was so engrossing that I found myself bleary eyed at 3am convincing myself to put it down. Book one ends on a cliffhanger, but good news! Book two is already out so forward I go. 💓
Ratings Character building: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
World building: 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎
Romance: 💓 💓 💓 💓 - These guys are shaping up to be delicious and Zack is the epitome of true love as he demonstrates with his actions towards Paige.
Heat/steam: 🔥 🔥 🔥 1/2 - There are definitely some smexy scenes by the middle and end of this book, and they are very well written 😉, but no full out group stuff just yet.
Drama: 👀 👀 👀 👀 👀 - Loads of drama in this, but no unnecessary drama. Loads of feels on the full spectrum.
Action: 🍿 🍿 1/2
Suspense: 💣 💣 💣
Dark: 💀 - I wouldn't say this was particularly dark as most equate that word to mean when it comes to Romance and RH.
Triggers: Paige experiences and unexpected loss of a parent and some of those scenes of her grief and guilt were brutally emotional. I still have both my parents and I was pretty wrecked reading those chapters.
Ending: Cliffhanger but book two is already available.
Lone Wolf by Sam Hall is book 1 of the Reach for the moon series. THIS IS A COMPLETED SERIES.
Includes Rejected mates, brothers, second chance romance and Knotting.
Paige ran away from her pack after being rejected by the beta, Mason. When she is told her father, Alpha Spehr, is in a coma after suffering from a stroke she must return to her pack so she can choose her mate who will become the new packs Alpha. Returning home is difficult so her Friend turned sometimes lover Zack shows up to support her announcing he’s not leaving town until she’s his. Tensions rise between Mason and Zack when it’s revealed they are estranged brothers. When her father dies Paige is left no time to mourn, after managing to stop the contenders for Alpha fighting to the death it’s agreed all potential contenders will fight it out fairly in front of witnesses for the right to court Paige and become a potential Alpha. Paige doesn’t want this and will do whatever it takes to avoid taking her place as Alpha female but as her wolf starts to see a few of the men as her mates Paige realises there is more going on here especially when all the unmated males start going list crazy for her. It’s revealed Paige has the touch, a gift passed down through the alpha female line, in old times women with the touch were chased down and claimed by any male who could catch her. Determined to change this barbaric tradition Paige uncovers the truth about what she is, a Nix, a rare she wolf who finds multiple mates to fight by her side.
This is a interesting twist of the usual pack politics and it will be interesting to see where book 2 takes us. I also enjoyed seeing Paige slowly realise she holds all the power. She goes from being unsure of herself to embracing who she truly is. That cliffhanger though. Brutal!
DNF at 17%, so no star rating. There are real inconsistencies with tone and emotion here that just have me scratching my head. On some pages it's all positive "scent is not consent" to sex (I love consent in a story) and on other pages, she has to walk a gauntlet of potential mates so they can sniff her before anyone will take her to see her dying father.
That she masturbates in the shower to piss off her former boyfriend who is listening through the door before he even tells her that her dad had a stroke is bizarre. That she visits her dying father briefly before leaving to visit a bar, get smashed, have some girl talk, and then go home to discuss mating with her extended family is frickin wild. I know people process grief differently, but when they get the call the next morning that her dad took a turn for the worse, and she's suddenly feeling guilty for not being with her father... Well, I wasn't too sympathetic. She kept saying she cared, but none of her actions showed any care for a dying relative, let alone a parent. Everyone around her is too horrible and self interested to help her either. Her moving home to settle in with these awful people seems like a tragedy, not a HEA romance.
All of the potential mates are garbage, even Zack, who helped her become stronger emotionally and physically. There is no way he didn't know exactly who she was, and he lied, taking advantage of her for years.
I'm also not at all into the idea of a woman mating simultaneously with full blood brothers. Not to yuck anyone's yum, but it's too incesty for me.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention that the start of this book just drops you into a story that is in progress. I felt like the first 5 chapters were missing.
Book one in a new duo/maybe more: We meet Paige, the main character. She is a shifter and the daughter of the alpha in her pack. The pack she lives in sticks to some very oldfashioned ways, namely: the mate of the alpha's daughter will become the next alpha after the current one dies. Paige decides against living this life and leaves her pack after she was rejected by her chosen mate to find other values and ways of life. Years later she has to return while her father is on his deathbed. She is confronted with the expectations of the other pack members. She has to see the one man who rejected her, leave behind a good man she has feelings for and meet with a lot of possible candidates to become new alpha (and her mate)-some of them she has history with. In the last time I've been really loving main characters that are strong from the beginning. I like our female main character to be self-assured, witty and a little stubborn. I love a good conlict between male and female character but I absolutely hate it when the female is a pushover and relents far to easily. That's why I enjoyed reading about Paige. She has her vulnerable moments and she definitely is still figuring out her way but I love her way of thinking and her overall no nonsense attitude. I have to say that I was a little hesitant in reading Lone Wolf which was only because of personal preference in genres: in the last month I just was not really into shifter books. No sepcial reason. After ending the book I'm glad I started it, Sam's writting is on point and emotions are well conveyed. I was entertained and that is all there is to say.
SYNOPSIS: FC is a member of the pack where the alpha's daughter (the FC) must choose the next alpha and then mate with him. She chooses but her choice rejects her. This results in her leaving the pack and running away to "find herself". Her father dies and she is called home where she must choose the next alpha. Because she has not done so before her father dies there is now a competition as to who that should be. There are multiple love interests
DNF at 30% - This is one of the few books that I have not been able to finish. Usually I can at least skim read them. The writing of this book is fine but I just could not engage with the story or the FC. It didn't help that there is no real clarity as to who the MC or MCs are or, for that matter, how many there may be. There are multiple options around and whilst the FC seems to be interested primarily in 2 she also seems to be open to others. I found the FC to be a bit selfish and self absorbed, especially given her limp reason for running away in the first place and then cutting herself off from her father. I was also unclear how the whole alpha competition was supposed to run when it seemed that the FC was mostly into Zack. Why not just choose him and be done with it?
There's alot of "fade to the past" where the FC is suddenly put back to events that happened in the past. Some of these were useful to provide background but there just seemed too many and it was a bit fragmented.
Ultimately I just couldn't get into the story or connect with the characters so I didn't finish. Just not my cup of tea I guess.
