Simple yet effectivement drawing. Really enjoyed the black and white and that smoke allegory throughout the book. Interesting angle on freud's life.

A disturbing bit of history with an equally disturbing visual style in which the lead character looks like an undercooked lump of dough. Well-done, but I'm not sure what the point was, other than to leave me very sad about how many people were hurt by others' actions.

The artwork is stunning but the (hi)story makes for an odd focus for a graphic novel. I don’t think this is the right medium for this material. Or maybe it’s just a narrative that doesn’t illuminate much, regardless of the format.

Super well done! A nice surprise to encounter at the end of the year here. A little niche but a key moment in the history of psychoanalysis and its shift from Europe to the US. Any little light on the deep roots of our collective bipolar social development helps...

Unremittingly depressing and pointless. The only redeeming parts of the book were the endnotes about the pioneers of psychoanalysis.

Is psychotherapy a farce? Does anyone know anyone who was actually helped by being psychoanalysed. Please do tell me if you do. Doesn’t this whole method put too much weight on the goodness of the analyst who is only human.

The drawings in here are lovely, dark black and white monsters, smoke, bulging eyes, lovely women, parents morphing into monsters.. strangely the background furniture is really eye catching- I found myself admiring a lamp or two.

The case of Frink is interesting. Troubled therapist’s affair with rich beautiful patient leads to inevitable disaster. Somehow affairs in a therapeutic setting seem to quite the norm in this era. Is that why modern therapy can seem so cold and impersonal sometimes? No sexual intensity, so no healing? Or was this whole thing made up by a bunch of guys as a way of getting laid wi the women they couldn’t dream of otherwise.

Oh sure there’s things Freud got right, almost as many as he got wrong. Make of that what you will.
