Get a better understanding of Korean sentence structures and confidently extend your sentences! This book is designed for beginner and intermediate Korean learners that want to practice extending Korean sentences related to everyday activities.
I was a good five months into my Korean studies when my studdy buddy N. and I decided to start with Build & Extend Your Korean Sentence. In the beginning I was very overwhelmed by the use of conjunctions, linking verb-endings, or the added modifying words. Most of those weren't coverd in the TTMIK Level 1 and TTMIK Level 2 grammar books yet and were only introduced in Level 3 or 4, some even in Level 9! This is the reason why I asked myself "Why?" most of the time. But as we continued to go through each chapter (one chapter a week), it became easier and easier.
The chapters were logically structured and built up from easy to difficult: - Conjugation of verbs in present, past, and future - Combining the conjugated verbs with nouns into a mini-sentence by using subject or topic marking particles - Three or four of the conjugated mini-sentences were combined, modifed, changed, and linked in a flowchart; all combining verbs/nouns, modifications, changes and linking verbs/nouns were explained - The same flowchart was shown on another page sans the modifictions, changes, and linking verbs/nouns; they needed to be added by memory - During a small conversation at the end of each chapter, the combined, linked, modified sentences are to be added to the conversation by memory
In addition to the book, audio files were available on the TTMIK website or in their app. The audio files helped a lot to get a feel for the actual pronounciation and intonation and even repeating the sentences and conversation ten times in a row.
Build & Extend Your Korean Sentence is a great way to learn more about the language and its structure. I definitely recommend it to all the Korean learners out there. However, having little knowledge of Korean (hanguel, conjugation etc.) is essential and helpful in my opinion.
This is a great book that helps you do exactly as advertised, that is, build and extend your Korean sentences. One of the more complicated parts of learning Korean is understanding how phrase structures fit into others. But when you want to make longer, more natural sentences, it's necessary to learn how to embed one clause within another, and this book helps that process along. It's a fantastic resource to study with and return to throughout one's study.
It started of of good but got boring real quick and the required language level gets mixed up all the time. At one point they teach you the word “short” and on the next page ophthalmologist and stye?
I went through this book fairly quickly, and it was pretty easy, but very good review, good format, relevant content and some new grammar rules at the beginning of the book that I had not seen in the TTMIK text books - at least through text book 6 which I have completed.
