Madeline Hunter is a nationally bestselling author of historical romances who lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and two sons. Her books have won two RITA awards and seven nominations, and have had three starred reviews in Publishers Weekly. In a parallel existence to the one she enjoys as a novelist, Madeline has a Ph.D. in art history and teaches at an East Coast university.
I really enjoyed Junker’s story, although there was an awful lot of assumptions and butting in and feelings hurt when (in my opinion) there shouldn’t have been. Still, I’ve enjoyed reading about Junker in the other Sabrina Jeffries books so it was great to see him get his HEA. 4 stars
I really enjoyed the beginning and middle of Jenna and Lucas’ story, it was interesting and engaging and super sweet…until he settled his business without ever letting her know what had happened. She didn’t even know he HAD business. Much less…well no spoilers but I really hated that ending. 3 stars
Kate and Daniel’s story was lovely! I really enjoyed their history and the surprising fact that the marriage seven years ago (a lifetime ago) was valid. I also really enjoyed watching them get reacquainted. I don’t know if this is too picky but the name of the cat threw me completely out of the story. It’s really hard to believe a regency heroine would name a cat Princess Flufferbella. Maybe they would but it sounded more like a name a modern four year old would give her cat and annoyed me every time I read it (although I did, of course, love the cat herself). But overall the story was great and I loved the strength and ingenuity of Kate! 5 stars
“When We Finally Kiss Good Night” (Duke Dynasty, Book 4.5) by Sabrina Jeffries Years ago, poet Konrad Junker swept Flora Younger off her feet…then disappeared without so much as a goodbye. They’ve crossed swords the times they’ve met since then, but now, stranded at an inn during a snowstorm, Flora and Konrad finally have a chance to reconnect and see if the spark that was once between them still burns hot.
“When We Finally Kiss Good Night” is such a treat. Konrad’s long-held secret – playing the role of playwright of what are actually the Duke of Thornstock’s plays – has held him back from taking a wife and starting a family. He’s at a crossroads when he meets Flora at the White Rose Inn, and though it’s easy for him to fall for her all over again, the problem he has still remains.
It’s easy to like Konrad and Flora. Konrad is always ready to lend a hand and he has a good heart and a sense of humor. Flora is sensible and kind, willing to pitch in and not take herself too seriously, and though she was hurt by Konrad in the past she works through her problems. The two of them suit each other well and it was easy to fall into their romance. I loved the Christmas cheer Sabrina Jeffries infused in this story. From bringing traditions together to Christmas songs and merriment, this was a heartwarming story. Add in a sweet second chance romance with just a dash of spice and it’s easy to see why I found “When We Finally Kiss Good Night” to be a perfectly delightful holiday romance.
“The Unexpected Gift” by Madeline Hunter Innkeeper Jenna Waverly is looking forward to a few days with no guests and only two servants on-hand. It’s a respite she looks forward to all year long. Then a fierce snowstorm happens, bringing her a houseful of stranded travelers. One of those travelers is a seriously ill man. Lucas Avonwood is flirtatious when feverish, so heaven help her when the man recovers…
“The Unexpected Gift” is a sweet romance. It was easy to adore Jenna – she works hard, takes care of others, and doesn’t have a moment’s hesitation of stretching what she has to take in a group of strangers in a storm. I liked her practical nature – more so because her burgeoning relationship with Lucas allows her the chance to dream of more. Lucas is a mystery at the start of the story. He’s a man on a mission, but what that mission is I’ll leave for readers to discover. Lucas is determined but honorable and when Jenna’s life becomes tangled up in his hunt, he searches for a good solution. The result is a bit too rushed and not quite believable for my taste. I liked Lucas and Jenna together so I was all for Madeline Hunter finding a solution that would give them their happily ever after (even one so speedily developed). However, it felt like Hunter took a few shortcuts to wrap things up in a tidy bow. If there had been a bit more development to make things believable it would have been nice.
“When Strangers Meet” by Mary Jo Putney The last thing Kate expects to find when snowbound at an inn is her long-lost husband, Daniel. The man rescued her years ago when her uncle auctioned off the grieving young woman and Daniel married her to rescue her, thinking it was a sham marriage. Except it wasn’t actually a sham and now both are curious to see if perhaps that long-ago night could have been the start of something real…
“When Strangers Meet” was the most uneven story for me. I liked the premise and how Daniel and Kate were reunited after not having seen each other for seven years. The snowbound setting allowed them to drop all pretenses and I enjoyed seeing their honest conversations as they got to know one another. Kate and Daniel have an easy chemistry and if their burgeoning relationship had been given a bit more room to develop I would have really enjoyed their romance (though no amount of page time could completely make up for Mary Jo Putney’s extreme overuse of exclamation points). However, the rush to get to “I love you” and happily ever after made the last part of this novella feel stilted and unearned. Even though I wished for more development in the love story, the scene-stealing cat and the solid chemistry Kate and Daniel had made “When Strangers Meet” enjoyable overall.
A Yuletide Kiss has three stories sure to warm your heart this winter. Jeffries, Hunter, and Putney all balance yuletide cheer with their romances in their own ways. I liked that each story was unique yet they all worked as a cohesive unit to fit the setting. Sabrina Jeffries’s installment was my favorite of the lot, but if you’re a fan of any of these authors this anthology is worth reading.
FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
This was an alright Christmas anthology. It seems that some of these main characters have shown up in the authors' previous books so I imagine you would like it more if you're familiar with them.
I liked that these stories all took place at the same time and place, where a bunch of travellers were forced to stay at an inn during Christmas time when the weather goes bad.
First story is a second chance romance between two travellers, the second story is about the innkeeper and her romance with an injured traveller (lots of caretaking which I always love), and the third is about two travellers who, surprisingly, were previously married in what they thought was a pretend ceremony but was actually valid seven years before.
That said, these three authors are completely new to me so I didn't feel any prior attachment, and that's maybe why I wasn't too invested in the love stories. They were a bit too quick and insta-lovey most of the time (the second-chance being the only one I could partially believe, but even that seemed too rushed). I also wished that the level of steam was consistent because the three stories had VERY different standards.
Overall, a nice anthology to give me Christmas vibes but since they are short stories, I ended up not loving them as much as I wanted to.
This Christmas anthology has three stories of people who are caught in a winter storm and seek shelter at an Inn.
When We Finally Kiss Good Night - Sabrina Jeffries: Years ago, Flora Younger thought dashing Konrad Juncker was going to propose. Instead, he left town and never contacted her again. Now they meet again while taking shelter at an inn during a winter storm. The sparks are still flying between them. But the reason Konrad did not propose is still valid.
This was a good second chance at love story. My rating: 4 Stars.
The Unexpected Gift - Madeline Hunter: Innkeeper Jenna Waverly had been looking forward to a nice quiet Christmas when she closed the inn for the holidays. But an unexpected winter storm has her hosting travelers who were stranded along the road. When a stranger is found half frozen in the snow, he is taken to the inn where Jenna nurses him back to health. Lucas Avonwood has been searching for the man who took advantage of his cousin. He had been told that he is a regular customer at the inn, so he is waiting for him to appear.
This story was OK. The romance was nice, but I didn't like how Lucas resolves his business without ever letting Jenna know what had happened. My rating: 3 Stars.
When Strangers Meet - Mary Jo Putney: Kate MacLeod's coach has slid off the road during a winter storm when two men offer their help to her coachman. They get the coach out of the ditch and follow it to an inn where they all seek shelter. When Kate gets a good look at one of the men, Daniel Faringdon, she realizes that he is the man who rescued her several years ago when her uncle was selling her hand in marriage in a tavern in India. When she breaks the news to him that the marriage they thought was fake was actually legal, Daniel proposes that they explore the possibility of staying in the marriage.
I thought this story was very original. It was my favorite in this anthology, even though it felt like they fell in love too quickly. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
When We Finally Kiss Good Night by Sabrina Jeffries:
This was such a great novella. It included so much of the Christmas traditions that began during this time period or those that had not yet spread widely. Flora and Konrad were likeable characters that I found easy to connect with. Konrad especially won my heart. He had made decisions that cost him Flora’s heart and was at a loss how to win her back. Especially since he found himself in a position that was not favorable to making her his own forever.
Despite the novella length, this felt full and well rounded. I enjoyed the secondary characters as well as the premise that brought them all together. With a bit of spice topping it off made this all the more easy to love.
The Unexpected Gift by Madeline Hunter:
This was a pleasant surprise with it’s touch of mystery running through it. It consisted of a story that was multi-layered and fully developed. Another full fledged novella as the previous one. I was a huge fan of Lucas and Jenna. Their chemistry was believable and there was an edge of anticipation as Lucas tried to find what he was looking for. That also carried with it the promise of angst that kept me on the edge.
When Strangers Meet by Mary Jo Putney:
This was a nice little read. I enjoyed that the author added the charm of a small kitten to the mix. The hero and heroine were very likeable and their story entertaining.

Flora Younger met Konrad Juncker before he was a well-known playwright. They spent time together in Bath and she thought he was her future, until he left without so much as a goodbye. Now she secretly writes critical reviews of his plays and moves in a different circle than he does, but when they’re stranded at the same inn over Christmas, things may just end differently this time.
This story is the entire reason I wanted to read this anthology as Konrad is a side character in the Duke Dynasty series, which I quite enjoyed, so I wanted to read his story. I was not disappointed by Flora and Konrad’s reunion despite the fact that lately I’ve gone off second chance stories. The openness and honesty between these two made them work for me as a couple and I also appreciated the steam provided in this story as it was lacking elsewhere.
The Unexpected Gift- Madeline Hunter
Jenna Waverly has closed her inn for a quiet holiday, as she does every year, but this year a snowstorm has her inundated with stranded travelers seeking shelter. The first such guest, Lucas Avonwood, is also frightfully ill and in need of care which Jenna can’t help but provide. But as his health improves, Jenna finds herself unwittingly charmed by the gentleman, though she suspects he harbors secrets and knows he is leaving soon, even as she makes him want to stay.
I am absolute trash for the sick/comfort trope and the Christmas setting with the inn and the snow just made this the perfect example. I loved the building tension between Jenna and Lucas and found their love believable despite their short acquaintance. I think it was really nice that they were both able to rescue each other in a way and that made their partnership more solid. I think this was my favorite trope represented in this anthology, and I praise the frequent sex scenes, I only wish they hadn’t been so brief and vague as they were, otherwise I really enjoyed this story.
When Strangers Meet- Mary Jo Putney
Kate MacLeod is another of the travelers stranded by the snow and she’s shocked to recognize one of inn’s other guests as Captain Daniel Faringdon, the man she married to escape her treacherous uncle in Bombay, just before being sent back to the safety of her family in England. Daniel was not at his best that night and doesn’t remember much of it, but Kate is hard to forget, and he soon decides to try his hand at convincing her to stay married to him.
This was a cute concept that gets bonus points from me for being unique. Daniel was a really good example of a redeemed hero but for some reason Kate and her exaggeratedly cute cat got to be a bit much for me. Her protestations were a bit nonsensical in some instances and had me questioning her intelligence, but fortunately it didn’t take her long to come to her senses given that this was a short novella. I was also disappointed by the lack of steam here since, with this being the only couple that was already married, I did kind of expect more.
This is a great collection of Christmassy stories overall, and though I prefer more heat in my holidays, I absolutely adored the snowy inn setting of this one and consider it definitely worth the read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I don't really have much to say about any of these. They were all sweet but short. I enjoyed them enough while I was reading them, but they didn't leave much of a lasting impression on me. Except for the cat's name. Authors, please do not have your characters name the cat they rescued from the snow Princess Flufferbella. It's extremely distracting.
A Yuletide Kiss is a linked anthology which means that each of the stories in this anthology are connected. The connecting device? A group of holiday travelers are trapped at an inn which has been closed down for the Christmas holiday because of inclement weather. While at the inn, acquaintances are rekindled, the holidays are celebrated, and romance is most definitely in the air.
As with all anthologies, I'll be reviewing and rating each story individually and then averaging the scores together for my final rating. I also need to give some blanket trigger warnings that you need to be aware of... period appropriate sexism, period appropriate misogyny, prostitution, sexual auction, parental death, alcoholism, depression, and PTSD and possibly others that I missed. Let's go, shall we?
-- When We Finally Kiss Goodnight by Sabrina Jeffries Konrad Juncker has a secret. For the last several years he's been the public face of the Duke of Thornstock's plays. It's been quite a successful endeavor. He's been able to focus on things like his poetry and staging the elaborate comedic plays. But due to a change of circumstances that life is about to come to an end. And while he's been able to save up a bit of a nest egg, it's not enough to support a wife and family on. Flora Younger has been serving as a companion to an older widow for years. Too poor to have a full season, she had a mini-season in Bath years ago, and there she met the young playwright and poet, Konrad Juncker. She fell in love with him, and she thought he loved her.... but he abandoned her. And now that they're stuck in an abandoned inn due to the weather, can they rekindle the flame that burned between them so long ago.
This is a fun second chance romance. The story was hinted at in a few book of Sabrina Jeffries 'Duke Dynasty" series and there's a lot of Easter eggs related to that series in this book. I will say, the experience of reading this story would be improved by reading that series and I'm not sure how people who haven't read the series will take this story. That said, I really liked Konrad's and Flora's second chance romance. I loved that they had the chance to get to know each other and find connections. I believed the romance. There is a lovely open door sex scene in this that I really liked. I liked Konrad. I liked Flora. This was a fun novella.
Five Stars
-- The Unexpected Gift by Madeline Hunter Innkeeper Jenna Waverly was looking forward to a quiet Christmas holiday. Unfortunately the weather has other plans. First, one of her employees finds an nearly frozen and ill man while out hunting for game, and then her empty inn is suddenly filled with travelers seeking shelter from a horrendous ice storm. But Jenna's got even greater concerns. First, someone must care for a traveler who is sick and may even be contagious. Second, her brother, who co-owns the inn with her, has taken out a mortgage without her permission, leaving her scrambling to find funds to pay the loan. But as she cares for the ill Lucas Avonwood, she discovers that there is something greater than money... love.
This is a nice little novella with a hint of a mystery in it. In a weird way, there were almost too many conflicts in this novella. There's a lot going on here and the pace is a weird combo of too fast and too slow. I did like Jenna and Lucas as characters and I found their internal narration well done. I loved hat Jenna was both capable and compassionate and fully cognizant of the disparity that's present in society at the time. Lucas's plot seemed almost overly complex but they were resolved satisfactorily. I did believe the romance, but I was less impressed with the sex scenes. They straddled the line between open door and closed door and were almost too literary to my taste. In all, I did like this novella, but I felt it was the weakest of the selections.
Four stars.
-- When Strangers Meet by Mary Jo Putney Years ago Kate Macleod met Daniel Faringdon. Well, that's not quite accurate. When Kate was a teen in India, her uncle auctioned her off to the highest bidder after the deaths of her parents. But to give the auction the veneer of civility, Kate's uncle insisted that the winner marry her, even going so far as to provide the vicar. Deep in his cups but determined to save this young woman, Daniel wins the auction but immediate sends her to someone to send her back home to her family in England. They definitely never consummated the marriage. Heck, they barely even had time to exchange names before they exchanged vows. Now, years later, they reconnect at a snowed in inn. Kate's been trying to declare Daniel dead so she's free to marry another. While Daniel, has returned from India to claim his inheritance. He needs a wife and he finds that he already has one. Can Daniel convince Kate to give him a second chance?
This was my favorite story in this collection. I really loved the plot -- previously married protagonists discover that they're still married and decide to give it a go. I found Kate delightfully competent and awesome, and I really loved Daniel who seemed to celebrate his wife's ability. Daniel was such a good doobie. I wanted to cuddle him to my chest and give him all the hugs. I loved that he acknowledged his failures and made strides to improve. I also loved that the book acknowledged that red hair was not considered fashionable or attractive at this time. There's also an adorable cat in this book. So that's a plus. My one complaint is that there isn't any sex in this book, but it fit with the theme of this novella... that passion isn't a basis for a marriage. Ultimately I really loved this entry so it gets..
Five stars. --
So averaging everything together this anthology gets 4.67 stars. which I'll round up to...
When We Finally Kiss Good-Night, Sabrina Jeffries Flora Younger and Konrad Juncker reunite at The White Rose Inn while seeking shelter from a snow storm. Will they finally be able to come to consensus over their burning loins?
I haven't read any of the series that Konrad originally guested in, so the myriad couples referenced in asides were a little confusing. But it was ultimately a completely serviceable little novella, even if it didn't do anything too inspiring. 3 stars.
An Unexpected Christmas Gift, Madeline Hunter Jenna Waverly, innkeeper, tends to injured / ill Lucas Avonswood until he's healthy enough to take to bed. Will Lucas's Secret Mission be fulfilled by secrets or sex?
Overall, this was pretty compelling. Lucas's reason for being in the area was rife with drama, and the shorthanding of emotional connection via nursing was....suspect, but I liked that Lucas got pretty seriously dedicated to Jenna without a lot of mucking about. Not telling her the truth about her brother though: BOO. 3 stars.
When Strangers Meet, Mary Jo Putney Kate McLeod and Daniel Faringdon reunite at The White Rose Inn while seeking shelter from a snow storm. And oh yeah they were married 7 years ago! Will they finally be able to come to consensus over their burning loins?
So clunky and not my thing: chapter 2 is literally exposition crammed between dialog tags ("You proved yourself when you asked if I had family back in England who would take me in, then immediately arranged for an upstanding local merchant named Mr. Yorke to send me home." = prime example), and the introduction of a trite cat with a trite name only detracts from further awkward / bland conversations. 1 star.
This was an ok anthology. On a snowy icy night strangers stop at an inn for safety. While there for a few days, three couples end up falling in love. The first two stories are characters from previous books that I have read, so I was familiar with them. Their stories ended up being the best because of that familiarity. Short stories are good when you want something quick to read but you (me) end up not loving them as much because their love stories are rushed. If you're looking for some good holiday romance though, these are cute for that.
This is a set of three novellas connected by the fact that they are all taking place at the same time, in an inn where a group of travellers become stranded by bad weather just before Christmas.
When We Finally Kiss Goodnight by Sabrina Jeffries If you’ve read the Duke Dynasty series, you’ll be quite familiar with Konrad Juncker, the fake playwright employed by the Duke of Thornstock to cover for the fact that Thorn was the author of the popular plays. Flora, the heroine, also appeared briefly, and it was apparent that the pair of them had some history. Here we discover that there was a failed romance between them a decade ago; Flora was in Bath to find a suitable match, fell for Konrad, and then he left to go to London with Thorn and she ended up becoming a companion to an elderly viscountess. The chemistry between the two is palpable, but there is an obstacle in that Konrad is currently in limbo, uncertain as to his future and whether he will be able to support a wife at all, much less keep a lady like Flora in good style. I think this would make a decent amount of sense if you haven’t read the Duke Dynasty series, but if you have read and loved them like I have, this is a nice little addition. Five stars.
The Unexpected Gift by Madeline Hunter Jenna Waverly is the owner of the White Rose Inn, and she very much did not want guests for Christmas, a time she closes the inn and gives herself a holiday, but she can’t turn away travellers stranded in a ice storm… and certainly she can’t refuse to help a seriously ill and injured man found in the snow close by. Lucas Avonwood is charmed by the beautiful innkeeper who carefully nurses him back to health, but he isn’t telling her everything - he’s searching for clues to the whereabouts of a devious thief and smuggler who may have been using the White Rose as a base. Spoiler: the villain turns out to be Jenna’s brother, and while I liked the romance between Jenna and Lucas, I had a serious problem with Lucas undertaking to ‘fix’ everything without actually telling Jenna what was going on. He NEVER DID tell her, which meant they were starting their life together with a significant matter Lucas was concealing. While it’s an otherwise decent story, that left a nasty taste in my mouth and I’m knocking a star off for it. Four stars.
When Strangers Meet by Mary Jo Putney The last person Kate Macleod expects to meet at the White Rose Inn is Daniel Faringdon, the man who married her to save her from an untenable situation in India seven years earlier, and then promptly disappears. To add insult to injury, he doesn’t appear to even recognise her at first! But since he’s here and apparently not dead, she’s going to have to convince him to help her get the marriage annulled… except Daniel seems to think that being married isn’t such a bad idea. I liked this story a lot. Kate and Daniel are both strong, smart people who’ve overcome past difficulties and come to a place where they know who they are and what they want from life. Five stars.
Overall this is a very strong anthology, but there were a couple of puzzling discrepancies, mainly that the three stories had very different heat levels. The first is high heat, open door, the third has no sex scene at all, and the second is a sort of in-between, partially open door. To be honest it felt like they were in precisely the wrong order and should have escalated in heat level instead. Taking each story on its own merits and averaging, however, it comes out at 4.67, which I’ll average up to 5 stars.
Disclaimer: I received a review copy of this title via NetGalley.
This new Christmas anthology features three brand new connected novellas by three of the biggest names in Historical Romance. Each of these Regency-era novellas is set at the White Rose Inn where each couple has been stranded by a snowstorm just days before Christmas…
When We Finally Kiss Good Night by Sabrina Jeffries, 4 stars: Fans of the Duke Dynasty series will be thrilled to discover that playwright and friend of the Duke of Thornstock, Konrad Juncker is reunited with Vanessa’s friend Flora Younger, when they are both stranded on a way to the Duke of Armitage’s house party – a party that they didn’t know the other was attending. Years ago these two met in Bath and Flora believed that Konrad was courting her, but when he disappeared without even a goodbye, her heart was broken and her future took a dramatic change. Konrad regrets his actions in Bath, but he has secrets that even now prevent him from offering for Flora and he knows he should stay away from her, but he can’t seem to stop himself. This second chance romance is sweet, but a little slow-moving, however, the love scenes are on the warmer side and the ending is fabulous!
The Unexpected Gift by Madeline Hunter, 3 stars: Jenna Waverly, the owner of the White Rose Inn usually closes her establishment for the Christmas holiday, but this year her plans are drastically changed when a storm brings not only stranded travelers looking for shelter, but also brings an unconscious and very ill man to her door. Lucas Avonwood works for the Home Office, but his trip to the White Rose Inn has nothing to do with his work, this is personal. He was on his way to the inn to find the man who had an affair with his cousin and then stole a broach before disappearing when he took ill and fell off his horse. He awakes to find himself in the very inn he was planning to visit, being tended by a woman who may or may not be party to the scam against his cousin. While I did enjoy reading this novella, I thought of the three novellas in this collection, this story had the hardest job selling the romance, as it featured two strangers meeting and falling in love in literally a matter of days, and while that has been done in books before, for me, it didn’t feel genuine in this story.
When Strangers Meet by Mary Jo Putney, 4.5 stars: It has been 7 years since Kate Macleod has seen her husband, Daniel Faringdon, a husband she met, married, and parted with all on the same day, a man she never expected to see again. But apparently, fate has decided that she is not done with these two. Daniel has returned to England after years away to assume his newly inherited title of Baron Elland, and was just as surprised to see Kate as she was to see him, he wasn’t even aware their marriage in Bombay all those years ago was legal, but now that he does and has been reunited with his wife, he isn’t ready to let her go again. But keeping Kate won’t be easy, especially since she was in the process of having him declared dead so she could remarry! This was a fast-paced, nicely plotted novella with just a bit of kissing and a believable HEA.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that I requested and was provided to me by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.*
This book was filled with three historical romance novellas that I couldn't put down. They were filled with characters and situations that were very intriguing. All three stories were based on the same set of events, but each story was based on different characters point of view. I loved that! I expect anyone who enjoys a good historical romance will love this book. I received an advanced reader's copt from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.
A Yuletide Kiss is a Christmas anthology, where three stories intertwine. As the Christmas Season approaches, a sudden snow storm forces a rag tag bunch of travellers to take shelter at a small country inn, which is closed for the holiday. As they work together to make the time enjoyable, romance blossoms, between old friends and new acquaintances.
I've never really read a book like this before, but I've loved the work of these authors in the past, so was definitely looking forward to it. The first story was Sabrina's which is related to her Duke Dynasty series. I was glad we saw Conrad again, but this was my least favourite tale of the three. I felt like Conrad and Flora's story was a little contrived, and didn't have too much substance to it - but it was only a short one, so that's probably why. Story two, this time Madeline's, focuses on the owner of the inn, Jenna, and one of the travellers, Lucas, who is looking for a thief, who turns out to be linked to the inn. He falls ill, and needs to be cared for by Jenna, and in that period, the sparks fly, and I really felt like Jenna found someone who could support and help her, and who was deserving of her love. The final story was my favourite. Mary Jo's characters, Kate and Daniel, had met in India, and been forced to marry in order to save Kate from being auctioned off by a vindictive and opportunistic uncle. When Daniel out Kate on a ship back to London, and her mother's family, they thought the marriage was a sham. But Kate has since discovered it was real, and needs to find Daniel - or have him declared dead - in order to marry for real. So it's as if fate has intervened when they are snowed in together for Christmas. Daniel wants to give the marriage a try, and Kate's not wholly against it. I loved their growth as a couple, and how they bolstered each other, and came to truly love one another. All in all, a really nice Christmassy read!
adored that the three short stories are happening under the same roof so it feels especially sweet and connected. i adored all three couples. some of them met prior to this, a couple didn't. the authors gave a cozy and wintry vibe to the whole setting since everyone was indeed trapped in the quaint inn that jenna started. overall, it was sweet and fun.
Three seasonal novellas connected by travellers stranded at an inn because of bad weather
When We Finally Kiss Good Night by Sabrina Jeffries When Flora Younger first met Konrad Juncker, she thought she’d found her match, only to have her hopes dashed. Konrad is now a famous playwright whose plays Flora has secretly panned in reviews. But a chance meeting in a secluded inn may help them rewrite this star-crossed romance . I’m so pleased Konrad had his story, I'd liked him in The Duke’s Dynasty series by the author. An entertaining second chance romance, which I loved & read in a sitting.
The Unexpected Gift by Madeline Hunter Jenna Waverly has closed her inn, anticipating a blissfully quiet Christmas, until a snowstorm brings the first of several strangers to her property. Lucas Avonwood, as charming as he is secretive, is on a mission to track down a scoundrel. Another well written page turner. An engrossing novella with mystery as well as romance, right up my street.
When Strangers Meet by Mary Jo Putney Kate Mcleod is shocked to find that her fellow guest in the snowbound inn is the dashing soldier who may or may not be her husband. Daniel Faringdon barely remembers that long-ago night when he rescued her from disaster, but the desire they discover now will be impossible to forget, or to ignore. Will they part or make a go of their marriage? I loved everything about this novella, the characters with their faults, their attraction & there’s a cat My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I received an advance review copy from NetGalley, but my opinions are entirely truthful and my own. I had read multiple books from each of these authors previously and enjoyed them, so this book was a good fit for me.
Sabrina Jeffries- I've liked the previous books in the Duke Dynasty series average or better, but this one didn't work for me. Often holiday novellas require a little more slack cut to them, allowing them to be extra convenient due to their short length, and a bit sappier due to the holiday, but this seemed even a bit more flimsy than that. I didn't buy the events as plausible, and I didn't grow all that fond of the characters, AND I wasn't that very engaged by the rest. It wasn't absolute rubbish, but it was below average enough (for me) that I couldn't justify rounding up. 2 stars.
Madeline Hunter- This had a fairly slow start between rehashing some scene-setting events we already learned in the previous story (the story should be able to stand decently on its own, so I understand why these were repeated, it just contributed to the feeling of waiting for things to get going), and an illness that takes up quite a bit of page time in the beginning and obviously limits the potential of the chapters from that point of view. After that though it had pretty good pacing, and hooked my interest in the characters. The steam isn't 'fade to black', but it does stay pretty short and vague. So it felt a bit like a missed opportunity to me, who enjoys steam, but is probably fairly inoffensive to those put off by it. Overall I liked the characters and things wrapped up well. 4 stars.
Mary Jo Putney- I have read 6 prior books by this author, and enjoyed every one of them above average. But for whatever reason, I thought this one was terrible. I rarely give single stars, and all throughout the last half I was hoping I would be able to at least round up to a 2, but I just can't. I was bored, annoyed, AND disbelieving. I'm really kind of astonished. Not much happens, it's nearly entirely a series of conversations broken up by some menial tasks, and then some lines or a scene we've already seen earlier (some of them twice by this point) sprinkled in here and there. I actually don't mind conversation-heavy stories, but the dialogue was so stilted and basic that I felt like rolling my eyes. It seemed kind of like the dialogue in a less than mediocre play. Tons of things were spelled out to a simpleton degree in case the reader was incapable of putting two pieces of information together. And I usually enjoy animals in stories, but this one was so anthropomorphized that I would almost sooner believe a human somehow traded bodies with the cat than I would that this is reasonable animal behavior. lol. And then, to add insult to injury, there's hardly even a romance (vague spoiler) I don't buy it. I really am very disappointed. This won't stop me from ever reading other stories by this author, because I quite enjoyed those previous ones, but if this had been my first from her I would have a low opinion of her writing potential. If you are in that boat, do consider giving her work another shot. 6 books to 1 makes this the anomaly rather than the norm.
For the collection as a whole, 2.5 stars rounded up.
I enjoyed this trio of novellas, centered around a group of stranded travelers. Each author provides the story of a different couple and alternate viewpoints of the same events. I liked seeing the diverse group come together to create a unique holiday experience. I especially liked the various Christmas traditions included. Funny moments go side-by-side with heartwarming ones and results in a lovely Christmas tale.
WHEN WE FINALLY KISS GOOD NIGHT by Sabrina Jeffries Series: Duke Dynasty (Book 4.5)
When Flora Younger first met Konrad Juncker, she thought she'd found her match, only to have her hopes dashed. Konrad is now a famous playwright whose plays Flora has secretly panned in reviews. But a chance meeting in a secluded inn may help them rewrite this star-crossed romance…
I loved this follow-on to the Duke Dynasty series. On his journey to spend Christmas with friends, a sudden snowstorm strands him at a closed-for-the-holidays inn. When more travelers arrive, he umps in to help the innkeeper and is pleasantly surprised when one of those travelers is Flora Younger, the woman he loved and lost. Years earlier, they met and fell in love, but he bailed on her when he realized he couldn't support her as she deserved. Since then, he has become a famous playwright who is now at a crossroads in his career. Flora became a paid companion for Lady Whitmarsh and anonymously writes reviews for London plays and consistently bashes his.
The feelings between Konrad and Flora remain strong, but can they overcome their pasts to have a future together? Stuck together as they are, Konrad and Flora use the time to clear the air between them. I enjoyed Konrad's determined pursuit of Flora, even as he fears that he still can't give her what she deserves. At a crossroads in his career, Konrad's future depends on the secrets involving his plays. Flora finds herself falling for Konrad all over again but fears the same heartbreak. I loved seeing Konrad finally trust her with the truth and Flora's protectiveness for the man she loved. The ending was funny and sweet.
THE UNEXPECTED GIFT by Madeline Hunter
Jenna Waverly has closed her inn, anticipating a blissfully quiet Christmas, until a snowstorm brings the first of several strangers to her property. Lucas Avonwood, as charming as he is secretive, is on a mission to track down a scoundrel, but the inn's lovely owner is giving him a more compelling reason to stay…
Jenna closes her inn every year at Christmas to give her staff the time with their families and herself a chance to spend some quiet time. But when her stableman stumbles across an injured and feverish man, she can't turn him away. His arrival precedes that of several more stranded travelers whom she makes room for. Jenna spends her time going back and forth between nursing the stranger and taking care of her unplanned guests. I loved how she got the diverse group to work together, freeing her to spend more time with her patient.
I enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Lucas and Jenna. She's a practical woman but also one with a caring heart, and she's determined to pull him through his illness. Once he begins to recover, the sparks between them start to burn brighter. With the fate of her inn uncertain, her growing relationship with Lucas induces dreams of more. But Lucas is a man on a mission, and that mission may have unexpected ties to Jenna. When Lucas finds what he's looking for, he must find a way to solve the problem without hurting Jenna. Though I found the solution a little improbable, it worked to give them the future they wanted.
WHEN STRANGERS MEET by Mary Jo Putney
Kate Mcleod is shocked to find that her fellow guest in the snowbound inn is the dashing soldier who may or may not be her husband. Daniel Faringdon barely remembers that long-ago night when he rescued her from disaster, but the desire they discover now will be impossible to forget, or to ignore . . .
When Daniel returned to England to claim his inheritance after many years in India, he never expected to encounter the young woman he rescued. He barely remembers that night, just the fear of the young woman being auctioned off by her uncle. He remembers the drunk preacher who "married" them before Daniel turned her over to a friend who helped her return to England and her family. He gets the shock of his life when one of the other stranded guests is none other than the woman he rescued.
Kate MacLeod never forgot the handsome soldier who saved her from disaster, though she hasn't heard from him since then. Once she recovers from the shock of seeing him, she informs him that she was about to have him declared dead so that she can marry again. Stunned to discover that their marriage was valid, Daniel finds he's in no hurry to end their connection.
I liked the development of the relationship between Daniel and Kate. Kate is practical and competent in many areas and fits in well with the rest of the stranded travelers. Daniel worries about his return home after all these years, having left under trying circumstances. His time in India transformed him from a heedless boy to a mature and honorable man. Within a short time of talking to Kate, Daniel realizes that Kate touches something in him. He proposes that they consider remaining married. Kate is wary but willing to get to know him before deciding.
I loved watching Kate and Daniel spend time together. Kate is upfront about her life and plans for the future, including continuing to work. She hunts (loved that scene!) and willingly pitches in around the inn. Impressed by her abilities, Daniel makes it clear that he fully supports her while asking pointed questions about her almost fiancé. At the same time, Kate finds herself questioning her feelings for Edmund and considering staying with Daniel. Besides the fun encounters, they also spend some time sharing the less pleasant memories of their pasts. But when it's time to leave the inn, Kate isn't quite ready to commit until she can talk to Edmund. I ached for Daniel, who left wondering if he'd see Kate again.
I loved the ending. Kate gets her concerns addressed unexpectedly, freeing her to follow her heart. Daniel receives the loving support he needs to face his past in a heartwarming scene at the family home.
Yes! It’s that time of year when the book market is flooded with itsy-bitsy holiday stories. Why are we so happy when this happens? First of all, it seems as if we are reading more, but we are really not. But who cares!!!! Secondly, it’s a great way to find new authors! And, I’m happy to say, I found some authors I’m going to check into.
Let’s take a look at some of the holiday treats I have indulged in so far! By the way, short story=short review.
Next group is A Yuletide Kiss. Contributors to this anthology were: Sabrina Jeffries, Madeline Hunter, and Mary Jo Putney. Look out! Veteran writers! These short stories take place during a snow storm with a bunch of stranded travelers.
When We Finally Kiss Good Night, by Sabrina Jeffries. It’s been a while since I’ve read Sabrina Jeffries, which means I have not read any of her latest books. That means I am not familiar with the couple in this story, because they are a part of a series. First of all, I found Flora to be annoying. While I enjoyed the Christmas decorations, I could not find any chemistry between Konrad Juncker and Flora Younger. C
The Unexpected Gift, by Madeline Hunter. This one had possibilities. I loved the beginning of this story. We meet the owner of the inn, Jenna. Jenna is looking forward to some down time. She can hardly wait to cuddle up by the fireplace and be alone with her meager supplies. But then the storm starts, and then there is the injured stranger, and then there are all the other people who are going to other places. And, they are all stuck for a few days at her inn. I did like the interaction between Lucas and Jenna. I liked the narrative of the stranded travelers. I just grew a little tired of Jenna being a doormat. But even with that, this was my favorite story of the group. B+
When Strangers Meet, by Mary Jo Putney. A long time ago Daniel saved Kate, married her, then just disappeared. Oh, what a big ol’ coincidence that they should be stranded together at the inn. This story wasn’t bad, it just needed a longer format. B-
Overall, I enjoyed the Madeline Hunter story; I thought Mary Jo Putney’s story needed a longer format, but I didn’t care for Sabrina Jeffries tale. Two out of three…not bad.
Wow! This book is phenomenal! Whenever I picked up "A Yuletide Kiss", I was whisked back in time, and went on such emotional journeys with these three stories.
The three novellas included in this holiday anthology are: "The Unexpected Gift" by Madeline Hunter, "When We Finally Kiss Good Night" by Sabrina Jeffries, and "When Strangers Meet" by Mary Jo Putney! All three authors bring history to life in such a vivid way, and each story jumps right off of the page before the reader's eyes.
The time period and location of each story is connected to the others. In no particular order: from a second-chance romance, to someone taking care of someone else who is ill and falling in love, to having been previously "married" thinking it wasn't legal, when it fact it was...each romance is different and unique and will keep you turning the pages.
If you enjoy historical romance, I highly recommend this book! I found it difficult to put down, and look forward to reading what these three amazing authors write next!
Thank you so much to Kensington Books for the ARC of this book, it is incredible! All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Thank you to Kensington Publishing and NetGalley for the arc!
This was definitely a different sort of romance than I typically read. But I really did enjoy it a lot more than I thought. Sometimes I am not sure how I feel about historical romance/fiction, but this kind of story (or stories) reminds me what is great about them.
The only author I had read previously was Sabrina Jeffries and it was a while ago. But I enjoyed hearing the story of Yuncker and Flora, which was hinted at in Duke Undercover.
I loved how all the stories were brought together and all the cameos from other story characters.
If you are looking for something fun to get you in the mood for Christmas, this is for you!
A Yuletide Kiss is a darling holiday anthology. This checked all my boxes for a sweet read to get into the mood for the holidays! Favorites are: some characters I knew, snowed in at an Inn, animals and intense back stories! This is worth a holiday read for all but especially fans of Sabrina Jeffries who need Konrad Juncker's story in their life!
“When We Finally Kiss Good Night” (Duke Dynasty, Book 4.5) by Sabrina Jeffries
Sabrina Jeffries sets up the main points of the anthology for all the stories to follow. I was so happy to find out that I would be reading about poet Konrad Junker and the woman he has a past with Flora Younger. Konrad is on his way to the Duke of Thornstock’s in a storm when he stops at The White Rose Inn. He helps the Innkeeper carry a sick and wounded mystery gentleman inside. He is able to take shelter there but as the Inn is closed he has to pitch in, which he does quite willingly. Konrad is at a cross-roads in his life. The Duke of Thorn is about to reveal himself as the actual playwright behind the Felix plays, leaving Konrad to decide what is next. Flora crossing his path here at the Inn makes him see that maybe he wants more from life than just the theater.
Flora is such a likable character and I love her relationship with Lady Whitmarsh. Flora left behind her family who wanted to marry her off to the wealthiest suitor to become a ladies companion. The two women have so much heart and humor together that it draws in Konrad in such a happy way. I love the sparks, the holiday surprises and the love in this story!
“The Unexpected Gift” by Madeline Hunter
Madeline Hunter's story was my favorite! We have some spicy conflict, a dash of drama and some mystery. Jenna Waverly is a smart and kind Innkeeper. She started her own business with an inheritance and the aid of her brother. Every Christmas she closes the Inn to have a few days of rest. This year a storm has stranded a sick man and a handful of guests with her. Jenna expertly cares from the sick patient who turns out to be Lucas Avonwood. Lucas has a sparkling humor and fun flirtatious manner. It is very fun to see their story together and Avonwood's mission come to life.
“When Strangers Meet” by Mary Jo Putney
I'm such a fan of Mary Jo Putney. This story has a far flung backstory which masterfully gives this short story deep emotion. These characters past traumas are offset by how funny the characters are and an adorable kitten. The plot is such a fun surprise that I will leave you to it!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. #MadelineHunter #SabrinaJeffries #MaryJoPutney #AYuletideKiss #NetGalley
Sooo I'll admit... I wanted this book just for the new one by Mary Jo Putney. I read it first. Then, I realized that I have enjoyed books by both of the other authors. What a gem! I went to the beginning and devoured the whole thing! Lovely! So basically, terrible weather strands our heroes and heroines at Jenna's inn. Single gals, guys, snow, mistletoe.... it's cold outside folks, but it's warm in the inn! Don't miss this trilogy. Grab a glass and a blankey!
THE UNEXPECTED GIFT --Madeline Hunter Jenna, our heroine, is ready for some "me" time, as she closes her inn for the holiday.. Crazy snow storm, and she has unexpected stowaways that she can't turn down. Among them is a rescue... handsome man unconscious in the snow.... hmmm. A little TLC is what they both need. He has secrets but Lucas knows that Jenna is worth so much more.
WHEN WE FINALLY KISS GOOD NIGHT --Sabrina Jeffries This one is funny. Flora talks junk in her reviews about Konrad's plays. She might be holding a teensy grudge against him for breaking her heart years before, but really... he could write better. He has written better. The 2 cross paths (of course they do) at the inn. Love watching them work through it!
WHEN STRANGERS MEET --Mary Jo Putney I waited a long time for a MJP romance. The only disappointment... the duration! But.... this is a holiday mini-novel so I just enjoyed it. Strangers... in an inn... not quite. Unbelievably, they are married. Kate and Daniel have been married for years. It was a marriage in India to save her from a fate worse than death. He didn't even think it was legal in England. Fast forward, she wants to marry someone else and needs to be free from the binding marriage. He says... what? Wait! Can we just talk about this and to each other? What if there's something behind the attraction, and they have a chance to make their marriage a happy reality?
I am normally not one for anthologies, but this interconnected set was a great cozy Christmas read. The stories are linked together and have overlapping scenes and characters which I thought were really well done.
When We Finally Kiss Good Night by Sabrina Jeffries is a second-chance romance. Konrad and Flora met years ago in Bath, and he broke her heart. Now their chance meeting at the inn has brought them together a second time and sparks quickly kindle and fly. 4/5
The Unexpected Gift by Madeline Hunter was my favorite of the three novellas. Jenna Waverly is the innkeeper who finds a man injured and sick and brings him back to her inn to tend for him. Love burgeons over the sickbed, which is rather unusual. When the ill man, Lucas Avonwood, recovers, we learn he was on a mission to track down a criminal and the inn turns out to be the very place to find what he was searching for. I really loved Jenna Waverly. She's so well-developed and down-to-earth. It's so nice to have a heroine who works and is capable of running her own life, and who is somewhat more "working class" than in most Regencies. The story does establish that she is a gentlewoman. I would have loved it even more if she was not but if Lucas fell for her anyway. Either way, their romance is very sweet and believable. 5/5
When Strangers Meet by Mary Jo Putney has a fantastic twist beginning which grabs your attention right away. Kate Mcleod is a pretty redhaired young lady who comes across a man from her past who holds the key to her future. 5/5
I loved this anthology! It has the Christmas spirit that we all dream of. In the first story, WHEN WE FINALLY KISS GOOD NIGHT by Sabrina Jeffries, Flora Younger couldn´t forget the man she once loved. Konrad is now a famous playwright, but a chance meeting in a secluded inn may help them rewrite this star-crossed romance… In the second one, THE UNEXPECTED GIFT by Madeline Hunter, Jenna Waverly has closed her inn, anticipating a blissfully quiet Christmas, until a snowstorm brings the first of several strangers to her property. Lucas Avonwood, as charming as he is secretive, is on a mission to track down a scoundrel, but the inn’s lovely owner is giving him a more compelling reason to stay… And finally, WHEN STRANGERS MEET by Mary Jo Putney. Kate Mcleod is shocked to find that her fellow guest in the snowbound inn is the dashing soldier who may or may not be her husband. Daniel Faringdon barely remembers that long-ago night when he rescued her from disaster, but the desire they discover now will be impossible to forget, or to ignore . . . I’m a huge fan of Sabrina Jeffries and I was waiting for this novella, but the three are really really engaging. Every one of them made me feel happy and dreamy while reading it. There are great sexy times, memorable characters and all the stories take place in the same inn at the same time, so you can see all the characters in every story. So good!! I highly recommended this book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I was so spoiled by this absolutely excellent anthology of historical romances from three phenomenal romance authors. Admittedly, I have only read Sabrina Jeffries to this point, but you'd best believe that's going to be changing now!
All three stories run parallel in an inn closed for the holidays but opened to the stranded travellers who find themselves in need of shelter. I want to say that WHEN WE FINALLY KISS GOOD NIGHT by Sabrina Jeffries is my favorite because of its link to her exceptional Duke Dynasty series, and because I loved the second chance feels of Flora and Konrad, but then again WHEN STRANGERS MEET by Mary Jo Putney made me smile and swoon and perfectly balanced the past with the future, and was an altogether well-rounded story.
At the end of the day, though, it was THE UNEXPECTED GIFT by Madeline Hunter that has stuck with me the most since I finished by ARC of A Yuletide Kiss. I'm a sucker for a forced proximity story and this one takes that a little further than the other two. Plus, a protective alpha man who takes charge but retains a level of vulnerability...be still my beating heart.
Whichever one you end up loving most, there is something for every reader in this anthology!
Many thanks to Goodreads for a chance to read this book before it’s release. Christmas is my favorite time of year and this book will definitely put you in the Christmas spirit. It was such a delightful read! All three stories intertwined and flowed beautifully. What a treat to see the story from 3 different points of view. It was a first for me. Kudos to Jeffries, Hunter & Putney for making this tale flow so effortlessly.
