“BABES!! BRAWLS!!! BRACHIOSAURUSES!!!”

Special Guest Star: The Incredible Hulk! Shallow reader squee!!

Spectacular! Fantastic! Beyond belief!

See: Wolverine go berserk and slice and dice his way through the Savage Land natives.

Thrill: As Hulk pounds giant gorillas into jelly

Marvel: At how many times Wolverine gets his butt handed to him by dinosaurs. Kids, it’s a good thing he has a healing factor!

Swoon: At Sheena, the She-Devil and pages of scantily clad native women

Laugh: At Amadeus Cho, as he sets himself up as a god to the natives. Oh, that Amadeus!

Chuckle: At the banter between Wolverine and Sheena, the scantily clad She-Devil. You tell him, Sheena!

Mourn: For Jeff’s brain, as it turns to mush from reading too many comics.

Cripes, this one was a stinker! Why the hell is it damn near impossible to find a decent Wolverine book these days?!

How about this for pointless: Wolverine shows up for no reason on an island in the Savage Land along with Shanna the She-Devil, they fight a bunch of dinosaurs and some apes, Hulk shows up for no reason at the end, and a giant alien blasts off into space, the end. Cripes, what rubbish!

The story is practically irrelevant as this book is basically a showcase for Frank Cho’s art. It ticks all the boxes for stuff he loves to draw: scantily clad, curvy women, tick. Dinosaurs, tick. Apes/monkeys, tick. Kill Island (very creative title) may be all about the art but still, the story could’ve been better. Instead it’s mostly Wolverine and Shanna doing their “comedy” routine which consists of Wolverine saying something like “we gotta stay quiet and still” and then Shanna doing the opposite or Wolverine saying “no sudden movements” and then Shanna falling down from a tree. Fighting ensues. Repeat.

AHAHAHA oh my sides, they have split. Frank Cho’s “comedy” is about as advanced as a Looney Tunes cartoon. My favourite “joke” is Wolverine’s side constantly being pierced by arrows and him muttering “aw cripes, it’s never going to heal properly!” Wah-wah-waaaaaaah. Wolverine also says “cripes” a lot for some reason.

Another character, Amadeus Cho, magically appears on the island (I’m not sure the whole random teleporting thing was ever fully explained) who I know nothing about except that he’s Iron Man without the armour. No, not Tony Stark because Cho can blast stuff with his hands, fly, he’s got a personal forcefield and a chatty AI called Calvin, but I cared so little about this book and the character that I’m not even going to do the bare minimum of research by googling the character’s background. His whole deal seems to have been to repeat this one joke about him wanting to find out the score of the Superbowl and then he discovers his team didn’t win! AHAHAHA…

Hulk’s whole appearance is predicated around Cho doing some physical comedy which again reads like a pre-teen’s idea of “comedy” as Hulk is swatted like a fly by a giant alien and lands in the mouth of a massive fish. And Wolverine says “cripes”. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! These are “jokes”, guys.

Cho’s art on the whole is good but his depictions of women is about as derivative as they get. Shanna is slinking around in a fur bikini and thong the whole time and the only other women who appear are brainless sex slaves for Wolverine wearing pieces of string and eye patch-sized clothing. So to see some great imagery of Wolverine fighting dinosaurs and giant apes in the jungle, you’ve got to see Cho’s masturbatory fantasies first. Of course all the women are barbies with tiny waists, massive boobs, etc. because it’s a Frank Cho book.

Kill Island is an incredibly boring, incredibly contrived story about nothing that reveals that Cho may be an accomplished artist but he’s not a writer at all.

Criiiiiiiipes!

3.75 stars. While this might not have been the best story in the world, it was certainly fun as hell. Wolverine finds himself awakening in the Savage land. Learns that Shanna the She-Devil was helping some SHIELD agents survey and map out the Savage Land and they got too close to this monster shaped mountain and their ship went haywire and crashed. Now no one can get a signal out for a rescue due to the dampening signal coming from the mountain. Amadeus finds himself on the island as well and uses his universal translator with the locals to learn the real history of this odd mountain. This puts him and the locals on a crash course with Wolverine and Shanna. As usual, Frank Cho crushes it on art duty and the story he has here ain’t too shabby either. A lot of fun, crazy fights with Dinosaurs with an ending that makes you want to know what will happen now.

Frank Cho's five-issue arc which launched the Savage Wolverine title is kind of a mixed bag. It's been trashed by fanboys and pseudo-critics but I actually enjoyed this book.

True, it served more of a showcase for Cho's beautiful art. The story isn't this story's strongest suit. There's barely a plot, the molasses plotting and the ending that isn't an ending. But the Cho's really tried to give it a pulp flavor and it shows, especially in the covers letters page design.

Really though, this is more about the art. Get this if you want to see Cho draw the best things he can which would be babes, dinosaurs and gorillas.

Apparently people aren't too fond of Savage Wolverine -- at least around these parts -- but I am not one of them. I am a definite fan, and here's why:
Wolverine -- The angry Canadian killing machine isn't my favoritist character, he might not even be in my top five, but I do like him a lot, bordering on love (okay ... I love him), and anytime he can cut loose with those claws of his, I am on board for the cleaving. Cho makes great use of the Savage Land as a place for Wolvie to unleash the beast within, and brings him back to himself with the presence of beautiful and deadly, Shanna the She-Devil.

Shanna the She-Devil -- Yummy, yummy Shanna. Click here to see how I really feel about her.

Gorgeous Art -- If there is one area in which creator Frank Cho excels it is in his art, specifically the way he draws fantastically curvy women (his women remind me of a polished Frank Frazetta), but also in the way he conveys action. It is quite beautiful. I can see how some may feel his work is too clean (not to be confused with sterility because his work is full of life and nuance) and that it is more suited to an art gallery than the pages of a comic, but I find that polish a welcome change from what we normally see, and I look forward to Cho's art as much as I do Esad Ribic's.

Humour -- Another area in which Cho excels is in humour. He makes things funny without being precious, and that funniness makes things fun. With little jokes, situational humour and the occassional visual gag, Cho lightens the mood of even the most savage moments. It's a skill very few comic creators have.

Amadeus Cho -- I wasn't expecting the appearance of big brain Amadeus Cho, but what a seriously cool surprise. Usually Cho is connected to Hercules, but he's always popping up in random arcs all through the Marvel Universe. Frank Cho uses Amadeus as his greatest outlet for humour, but he also lets Amadeus' childlish arrogance free, giving his manipulative powers free reign to mess with Savage Land aboriginals, mutants and "green rage monsters" alike.

Dinosaurs & The Savage Land -- What can I say? There are dinosaurs in the Savage Land. DINOSAURS in the SAVAGE LAND! Exactly.

Flair for Cool Moments -- But then there's this other thing that Cho does so well: he offers up memorable moments that will stick with readers for all time. Case in point: how can anyone do anything new with the Hulk? Turns out it can be done. Super cool.
I suppose I can see how this wouldn't be for everyone, but it is definitely for me. It's not the best thing in Marvel NOW!, but it is a whole bunch of fun. Huzzah! Savage Wolverine.

A fun adventure tale in the Savage Land featuring Wolverine, Shanna the She-Devil, and Amadeus Cho.

Super wild stuff. I wish Cho had continued to write+draw this series, it's a bit of an odd cliffhanger. I don't typically like when Marvel/DC comics just include random other characters for the sake of recognizability and it's no different here.

Beautiful artwork although Cho does rely on similar models for his characters especially the female characters. Even the barbaric native females look like playboy models. Really fun page-layouts, character designs, and line art. This was the comic that turned me on to Cho and it was fun to revisit it.

A so-so story arc with Wolverine in the Savage Land (where he has been many times). Lots of violence and surprise, no Ka-Zar! It does feature Shenna. Not really crazy about the new Hulk being involved. And the story arc ended on a ? Is there any interest in finding out more. I took a gamble from Comixology Unlimited. It was worth a read, but nothing to write home about.

Storia: 3
Disegni: 5+++++

What are Wolverine, Shanna, Amadeus Cho, and The Hulk doing in the Savage Land with a Cthulu alien? I don't know, and neither will you after finishing this book! This one is as goofy as they come, and the plot makes no sense, but it was actually kind of fun. Cho's art is incredible, and there are some funny moments worked into the other-wise center of the road script. There are some rad dinosaur fights, lots of almost tasteful cheesecake, and fun cameos all tossing around in what is otherwise a total flop. It's a hard one to categorize, because when all was said and done, even if it wasn't a very strong work, I still enjoyed my time with it. You know, like a bad action movie.

So eat popcorn I guess is what I'm saying? Something about popcorn?

1. If you don't like scantily-clad women in your comics, do not read this. You won't like it, I'm telling you now, just don't do it because it will only make you mad. I'm really not in the mood to defend or condemn this practice right now, so if you hate that shit, just don't even bother opening the cover on this one. If mostly feel unphased by it, you'll be fine. If you *gasp* like it, then you should probably go read HuffPo or something but not really and we should totally hang out.

2. I kinda liked that Wolverine literally falls out of the sky into this situation. It's kind of a clumsy way to deal with the "How do we rope Wolverine into this thing that has nothing to do with him?" thing. But you know what? It saves me a page of Wolverine standing in front of a computer screen, looking at a layout and saying something like, "Alright, Fury. I'll clean up your mess. But if this turns out anything like Cleveland, you're gonna need a patch for your other eye, by which I mean your browneye, when this is over. I'm going to claw out your butthole, Nicholas Fury, is what I'm saying, so don't screw me on this one."

This one was hard to rate for me. Overall I've been disappointed with most Wolverine stories from the past few years. The art was great Frank Cho as always, and his Shanna the She Devil never gets boring. (Me-ow!) But the story was...out there.

We start off with Shanna and SHIELD on this island, okay. The island has dinos, cavemen, and a dampening field that stops technology. Between that the monsters its inescapable But then Wolverine, Amadeus Cho, and the Hulk all show up and we aren't really told how or why they are there. And then ending was just..ugh. Unless it's followed up again later somewhere in the Marvel U that ending is going to end up really bad.

Overall if you are a fan of Cho's art, especially Shanna the She-Devil you'll probably like it for the art alone. The story is okay, but that's about it.

A mixed bag wolverine story for sure.... CRIPES! Frank Cho has some serious art skills, ummmmmm hi Shanna. Wolverine is drawn very well but his writing is pretty lame. The story has a cool premise surrounding a mystery on the savage land but what unfolds is not very good. I assume this is all setup for bigger things but if after 5 issues I wasnt sold.

What I can say about this boobs is that Frank Cho likes boobs there are so many boobs and butts and boobs in this boobs that PAGING DOCTOR FREUD ALREADY!

I'm sure there was a story here, but mainly it was lost. Wolverine and others show up in the Savage Land for no apparent reason and have lots of fights with animals and people whilst trying to escape. That's ... it. And boobs. Lots and lots of Frank Cho's version of ideal women, who are all well muscled, have flat stomachs, and size G and H boobies. There's even a scene with 4 identically-shaped women are brought in to a scene expressly for the pleasure of one man, one of whom is crushingly disappointed when he turns her down for sex. Yeah.

Look, I'm not hating on Frank Cho ... all that much. He knows how to draw, and apparently, he knows how to write a kind of fun but largely not very great script where Wolverine says "Aw, Cripes" a lot, because apparently that's funny? I think to like this, you have to like what Frank Cho likes--silly action, prehistoric hijinks, and busty, busty babes. Fine if you're into that sort of thing, I guess. It just didn't land on me.

This first volume of Savage Wolverine is like a sugary dessert: it’s delightful, but as a “meal,” it’s completely insubstantial. That said, if it’s dessert you want, it doesn’t get any more decadently self-indulgent than Savage Wolverine.

This book gives writer/artist Frank Cho the perfect venue in which to write and draw all the things Frank Cho enjoys writing and drawing. You’ll see dinosaurs; giant gorillas; double-page spreads of Wolverine killing dozens of savage ape men; and the wildly-curvaceous Shanna the She-Devil striking eye-popping poses while dishing out her own measure of ultra-violence. (Shanna, for the uninitiated, is a second-tier jungle heroine who has been around for decades, but whose only memorable adventures have been crafted under Cho’s pen). Cho's art is, as always, absolutely stunning; his figure construction is rock-solid and his grasp of comic book action is marvelous. Tonally, the book is pure pulp, violent to the point of slapstick, but because it never takes itself too seriously, the reader is able to laugh with it rather than at it. The book’s unabashedly adolescent…but in a good way. The humorous element is pervasive—both Wolverine and Shanna alternate between lethal competency in battle and comedic clumsiness—and some audiences will find these elements hard to reconcile. But this is not a comic book to be taken seriously: it’s simply Frank Cho doing what he does, and doing it very, very well.

Savage Wolverine, Vol. 1 is about two things: the art, and the action. Readers looking for introspective, "literary" comics will find nothing for them here. But if that’s what you’re looking for in a superhero adventure set in a prehistoric jungle, any disappointment you feel is your own fault. If you order pizza when what you really want is duck a l’orange, you have only yourself to blame for your disappointment, not the chef, and certainly not the pizza.

I’m not sure how all the food metaphors got into this review, but I’m leaving them in. And before I write my next review, I’m eating lunch.

Good: Art is good and the story itself is a little entertaining, mostly for Shanna the She-Devil being a badass.

Bad: Humor at the expense of the native tribesman vs more advanced Westerners. Plus, while the men are generally average/ugly looking, the women are all tall, gorgeous, and pretty much there to be tits and ass in barely-there animal skin bikinis. The majority of the women-other-than-Shanna that are present are used for a brief gag where they are "gifts" for Amadeus' sexual gratification. Skip it.

The only reason for this book to exist is for Wolverine to stab dinosaurs, cave men, and giant gorillas. And honestly, that’s enough. Sometimes you just need to watch some of the ol’ ultraviolence perpetrated upon some droogs, and that’s what you get here. Anyone looking for something more substantial should look elsewhere.

Guest-starring Shanna the She-Devil, Amadeus Cho and one very angry Hulk.

This page here? Yeah, that’s the whole book. And I’m here for it.

Wolverine is deposited in the Savage land with no warning or reason. A Shield mission has also been sent to map a strange island there.

This is a fun adventure with dinosaurs. What you would expect from a savage land story.

This gets three stars for being socially insensitive in some ways that should be so glaring I refuse to put energy into explaining, but I did enjoy it at a five star level.

While some of Wolverine's narration felt choppy to read, the rest of the writing and dialogue flowed decently at a pace that was quick but not so rushed it felt confusing.

Amadeus is one of my favorite Marvel characters and I was glad he had a fairly big part in these five issues, even though it is a Wolverine series.

I usually don't comment on the art in the comics I read but in this case I feel that I should since it was phenomenal. Every character felt fully fleshed out and the colors were pleasing to the eye. Even the violence and gore featured was agreeable to look at instead of grotesque as I normally find it.

Overall this volume is not a comic to read if you're hoping for ethics debates or character development like in some other Marvel stories, but it is entertaining even with its large flaws and I will probably read it again.

Wolverine is stuck on an island in the prehistoric-style Savage Land, where he gorily kills lots of local tribesmen even though it's clear from early on that they're not bad guys. There's no comeback on that; when he finally fucks up enough to release the monster they're guarding, rather than contrition, we get a conclusion which sets up a deeply generic cosmic devourer story I suspect will never appear. Amadeus Cho turns up, nothing like any version of the character I've seen before, because the Macguffin can randomly summon people, which is one alternative to coherent plotting. So does the Hulk, even more pointlessly. I suspect this only exists because there was felt to be a market for Frank Cho drawing scantily-clad jungle girl Shanna, and I'm not even convinced he does that terribly well.

This is undoubtedly one of Cho's most lackluster arcs. I must admit that for the first couple of issues I was pretty intrigued, but then it just got... terrible.

The cameos from other SHIELD agents were just meh, especially Hulk's.

The last issue of the 5 was nothing short of laughable, and I have since dropped the title altogether.

In my eyes the only redeeming quality in this release is Cho's art, which is, truthfully, pretty astonishing in places. I particularly like the way he draws Shanna.

I would not recommend this book at all though, there are far better Wolverine titles out there.

This was a fun story. Some nice "Wolverine-in-the-Savage-Land" enjoyment. Shanna made for a nice guest star, and she was well-written, coming across as strong and competent. The appearance of Amadeus Cho was great, and he was charming and cool. The art was very good. Cho does have a bit of a trend towards cheesecake, and his women are certainly buxom - I'm not sure how Shanna doesn't have back problems - but he actually also manages to make them look strong and well-muscled, and he generally puts them in fairly natural positions. All in all, a good story.

Frank Cho's a great artist, but a writer he is not. Who gave this nonsense the greenlight? Some sexy drawings of Shanna the She-Devil fighting dinosaurs alongside Wolverine in the Savage Land? That's really all there is to this, other than some really stupid, fifth-grade level slapstick humor. Sheesh...

Ugh. This one is pretty awful. Shanna is treated like a dumb, weak foil to Wolverine's tough guy. Lots of humor at the expense of these "uncultured natives." It's just really bad in pretty much every way. No one acts in character and there are some seriously offensive tropes all over.

At least the art was good.
