mysterious group of killers—the Wolves—terrorize the nation. No one knows where they came from or why they murder thousands of innocent civilians.
Resi Kepler is a nurse who cares for those injured in the attacks. The Wolves left her without parents, famously taking them as their first victims.
When Resi is knocked out during an attack, she discovers a startling ability. She sees the memories of dead Wolf victims in her sleep.
Which is insane. And a little awkward considering the number of people dropping dead around her lately. She taps into her favorite defense mechanism: avoidance. She ignores it; acts like it’s not happening. If she doesn’t acknowledge it, it can’t be real. Right?
But another person she loves is taken. So, Resi accepts the insanity and dives into the memories of the dead to find the Wolves, save her friend, and avenge her parents.
As Resi gets closer to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the Wolves, however, she finds herself undeniably connected to them. She begins to wonder if the killing sprees are really all that bad. In fact, if she stops the terrorists, she thinks more people may die. Is Resi being brainwashed? Are the killings justified? Will she find out why she has this creepy gift? Is she really the one endangering the nation by attempting to disarm the Wolves?
Maybe it’s because I know the author, but I couldn’t put this book down. There are so many twists and turns and just when you think you know, you don’t. Such creativity in this book. A suspenseful story with fleshed out characters and a satisfying ending that still leaves you wanting more.
Really an enjoyable book that catches your interest from the get go!? characters are fun and best yet the story is original and full of surprises! Way to go Rene Fenner! Can’t wait for the next book!!
The characters and story line keep you engaged and wanting more! Every chapter thickens the plot and the twists and turns are a rollercoaster that won’t let you put down the book. This is an easy and enjoyable read that captures and holds your attention with everyone page. Read it, you won’t regret it.
The Afterthoughts starts as it means to go on, opening with a violent confrontation in a hospital where our narrator, Resi Kepler works and involving the Wolves, a clandestine group who appear to be randomly killing civilians, primarily in Houston but with incidents cropping up in other American cities as their assassinations become more widespread. Armed, armoured and attacking with purpose and precision, the Wolves are a threat to all as there seems to be no pattern to their killings. They appear, they kill, they disappear which is a tense premise for a book.
Resi, with her friends, finds herself determined to discover who the Wolves are, what their purpose is and who is controlling them, having personal motives for doing so. Whilst attempting to find out more about the Wolves, she also finds out something about herself which gives the book its title.
The action moves forward at a great pace throughout, each discovery that Resi makes adding more pieces to the puzzle and moving her closer to her uncovering the identity and motives of the Wolves.
Rene Fenner has also created a likeable group of characters who are as keen to find out what is happening with a view to stopping it as Resi, these being her work colleagues, Brandon and Edda as well as Resi's love interest, Cole and Edda's husband, Coen. The dialogue that they exchange and their interaction with Resi as our heroine is all well realised and credible. Besides the main plot where everyone is driven to stop the Wolves, there is some light relief in the camaraderie between Brandon and Resi as well as their mutual attraction, which is a small subplot to the main action.
Fenner does a great job at keeping you guessing about the whole reason for the Wolves and the revealing of their identities and purpose is very well done. Throughout, it is not easy to second guess her plot and I was genuinely surprised at some of the twists and turns that manifested themselves in the book.
I would thoroughly recommend this book, especially if you enjoy a mystery thriller which is not too gory or threatening and has the right amount of suspense and nasty incident to keep you reading.
This review was first published on Reedsy Discovery where I was privileged to read it as an ARC.
A woman with a mysterious ability searches for answers after her parents are murdered by a violent group of killers in this action-packed debut by Fenner. The country is under attack by a ruthless domestic terrorist group known as The Wolves and countless civilians are dying left and right. Resi Kepler, an ER nurse, treats dozens of patients injured in Wolf attacks while dealing with the trauma of losing her own parents to The Wolves. After being knocked out during an attack, Resi wakes up to discover she has the ability to see the memories of dead Wolf victims in her sleep. Disturbed by the images she sees and the number of Wolf victims increasing daily, Resi does her best to ignore the situation as a coping mechanism. But when her loved one is kidnapped by The Wolves, Resi is forced to confront her new ability as she races to save her friend and avenge her parents. Fenner, being a nurse herself does a wonderful job of perceiving medical scenes through the eyes of a healthcare worker without bogging readers down with complicated medical jargon. The dark plot is complemented by Resi's witty narration while the unexpected twists and turns will keep thriller fans glued to their seats.
In this supernatural thriller, nurse Resi Kepler, discovers that she can read the memories of the dead. Specifically, she can read the memories of those who have been killed by a group called, The Wolves, who are killing innocent victims at random. As her parents were among the first victims of The Wolves, she has a connection to these killings. However, her ability to read the victim's memories is extremely disturbing, and she finds herself trying to ignore them. Eventually, she can no longer put these memories aside and must confront what she learns from her visions. She questions the motives of The Wolves and begins to wonder if the murders are, in fact, a good thing for society. This page-turner is a joy for those who like thrillers with lots of plot twists and a unique storyline. Not only is the story unique, the writing is fresh and draws the reader into the book from page one. The plot will take readers places they didn't expect which is refreshing. This is one of those books readers will find hard to put down once they begin reading. It is a marvelously entertaining read, but beware, you will find yourself missing sleep to finish this one!
This book was a real rollercoaster ride. There were so many twists and turns that created an interesting read. The characters were well written and the story was very real - minus being able to dream memories of the dead. But other than that, it made you think and was definitely relevant to events happening in the world today.
Resi Kepler is an ER nurse who lost both of her parents in a terrorist attack. The terrorists are called wolves and leave everyone in fear. No one knows who the wolves are, or what the want, but they seem to have a target and leave once their targets are dead. After Resi is injured in an attack, an ability appears, where she is able to dream the memories of the dead. As she begins to learn about this gift, a loved one of hers is kidnapped by the wolves, and her and her friends work to find the wolves and save their loved one. Who can she trust? Whose the enemy? Are the wolves actually doing good, and will stopping them cause more people to lose their lives?
This book was a real page turner. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery, sci-fi, and conspiracy theories.
This book had some interesting concepts, although I felt like some of the characters were a bit naïve at times. I know that could be the way they were written though, and it might have been intentional. I couldn't help laughing to myself at the line "Once people realize how serious this disease is, they will make sure everyone around them complies with the rules".
It starts out awesome and keeps getting better: I was interested in this book since reading the description, and I really liked the cover as well. But it was the first chapter that really drew me in and the story kept getting better till the end, full of intrigue and twists. Not too shallow characters, and not too much of anything- just the right pace for that page-turning effect.
I really enjoyed this book! The writing was really well done, and I liked the author’s voice and style. There was a twist I wasn’t expecting. I actually reacted out loud like, “Whaaaaaaa??!” An all around enjoyable read. 👍🏻
What a book! Loved it from the start. I'm amazed at such a riveting piece of fiction from a first-time author. Kudos to her! Hopefully her talents will be noticed by a publishing house and she'll be on her way to stardom. One can only hope, and I hope so for this young author!
