i still like the drama better when it comes to plot, since this novel felt a lot less coherent. i really enjoyed the shan gudao nanyi plotline in the show; it was a bit of a shock to me that it wasn't originally in the books since it's so central to the plot.
honestly, trying to compare this and the drama is like apples vs oranges because of all the drastic changes that were made, but this book is good in a vastly different way. it's a lot more mundane i would say, less of the flowery wuxia stuff that you'd usually expect, and in that way it's unique. i also enjoy the ending a lot more — it's sad, of course, but at least it's not open or unacceptable.
still, something about the pacing/timing just felt off to me unfortunately.
i loved li lianhuas character as much as i always have (but even he is quite different in the novel vs adaptation). maybe even moreso here, because his complete break from his past character/identity is a lot clearer, while in the show it's more blurry — has he really put everything in the past down if he's looking for shan gudao's body? he still is hung up on a lot of things. while in the book, li lianhua really just wants to live his life unbothered. his fate is still the same, but there's a distinct difference in character here. i'm not sure which i like better.
overall i enjoyed it, esp the last part, which was more engaging but also kept the same tone/voice as the first two. it's definitely great, my expectations were just in the sky for this one cause of the drama.

Different from the live action drama in various ways; still leaves me emotionally compromised.
Most of all, Li Lianhua. It's impossible to read this book and not love him. He's intelligent, kind, secretly (less so over time) a badass, quirky... and tragic. Oh, I may never get over him.
Fang Duobing is very different, and Di Feisheng doesn't appear much. That said, I still enjoyed Li Lianhua's dynamic with both of them very much.
The author does jaunty and humorous just as well as she does dramatic and cool. The cases are interesting, though some really have nothing to do with the main plot about Li Lianhua's past. Still, everything ties together and I am... upset.
As usual, I read this in Chinese, but am reviewing in English.
