Honestly, how are we on book three already? I feel like it was only yesterday this series was released, and with the upcoming October publication of It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder in Maria DiRico's series, A Catering Hall Mystery, readers are in for a solid treat. I wanted to hold off until it was closer to Christmas, but I couldn't stop myself this week. And wow, was it good!

The books take place in a town in Queens, New York, which just happens to be across the East River from me. Mia, a thirtyish sorta widow, returns home to her sorta mob family, and begins running a catering hall. In this third installment, her mother returns too... and it's quite the surprise. But when we learn of her connection to the murder mystery, it's even more of a shocker. I was prepared to hate the woman, at least based on what Mia's told us in the past, but that's not the case. Although the relationship is strained, it's ripe for growth, and I am excited to see what develops.

In terms of the mystery, let's just say... whoa, I'll never look at Christmas lights and lawn decorations the same again. Mia's former crush, Jamie, learns some devastating news from his family, and when a potential half-brother shows up in Queens, all hell breaks loose. So many mobsters... so much double talk. It's hilarious, and I cannot recommend it enough. I now know... do NOT piss off Maria DiRico! As if that's not enough, Mia's dealing with clients who are driving her nuts, and this time, an entire circus is practically setting up shop in the catering hall.

If you're a fan of romance in your cozies, at least the subtle but hit-you-over-the-head chemistry kind, then this book is definitely gonna make you smile. Who wouldn't want a gorgeous mob son coming to work for Mia? I think readers might have some naughty dreams about newcomer Shane, and if they're anything like Mia's, the steam is gonna blow! But it's a funny one too, and all throughout the book, it builds until the end. I won't spoil anything, yet I will say, the ending certainly makes it pretty clear what's happening. Do Mia and Shane hook up? Or does he have to let her down softly because of his personal situation?

Excellent installment. Highly recommended. I really think this series is gonna take off, and if you want something with humor and sarcasm and some heat, this Italian mafia backdrop is perfect.

It is Christmas in Astoria, Queens, New York and the staff at Belle View Banquet Manor are busy with a strange one year birthday party with a Nativity theme and a sweet sixteen party. Mia Carina and her father Revello, retired "Family Lieutenant," run the catering hall for Revello's old boss, Donny Baldano. Mia and Donny's son Jamie are good friends but things get tense when someone shows up saying he is Jamie's brother. Then Mia's self centered mother Gia and ex-wife of Ravello shows up from Italy. Strange things are happening in the community, especially when said "brother" is found dead in Christmas decorations next door to Mia's and her Nonna's home. I have really enjoyed this series with the funny, expressive Italian characters as well as the employees and competitive octogenarian neighbors of Nonna. This one has a great murder or two to solve and lots of suspects to ponder. Pete, detective, author, and ex of manor employee, Cammie, puts up with Mia's sleuthing but actually benefits by her work as does reporter Teri, who loves to get tips from Mia. Expect some tense, dangerous times along with family squabbles, sprinkled with humor, love, and tied up in a sweet Christmas bow ending. Love the series!
I received a complimentary ARC from Kensington Books and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.

The latest installment of the Catering Hall Mysteries is set at Christmastime in New York. This fantastic plot is stuffed full of home, hearth, and family relationships. The Boldano Family is shocked to it’s core when someone infiltrates their family as a long-lost relative. The answer to that situation comes to a boil very fast, and it’s a huge upset! Protagonist, Mia Carina’s life is hectic as she navigates the event planning at Belle View, plus deals with the suspicious surprise return of her mother, Gia.

Filled with mirth and good tidings; Author DiRico’s magic pen flows swiftly through the complex murder mystery. Nonna’s street competition to win best Christmas lights and decorations is a lot of fun. The main characters in this series are some of my favorites—so easy to like and feel welcomed in sharing their ups and downs in life. There are several bad characters to contemplate whether they are killer’s, or not. I was thrilled at the new ‘oomph’ in Shane and Mia’s relationship. There is so much description of delectable food in this story that my tummy was always growling! The author provides yummy recipes, also. I highly recommend this story. It’s best if reader’s read the series starting with book one so you understand the familial ties.

I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. All opinions are my own. Thank you.

The Belle View Catering Hall is busy with events as Christmas approaches, but Mia Carina gets distracted when the Boldano family asks for her help. Someone has shown up claiming to be Jamie’s long-lost brother. That’s a shock since Jamie didn’t even know he was adopted. Things get even more heated when Mia finds a dead body in her neighborhood. Can she figure out what is going on?

Those new to the series are in for a treat. Yes, this is a different cozy series since we have mobsters as characters and it is set in Queens. Yet these elements don’t overwhelm, and this feels like a cozy series. That’s mostly thanks to the characters, who come across as very real and likeable. In addition to the puzzling mystery, there are multiple sub-plots, which keep things hopping as we read the book. I did feel the climax didn’t quite work. Our questions are answered, but it was just a bit much. There’s plenty of Christmas spirit in this book, including a hilarious sub-plot about a Christmas light display contest. We get seven recipes and a couple of event tips at the end of the book. Fans new and old will enjoy spending this Christmas with Mia.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Where do I start? First, being of Italian descent, this book was a HOOT to read! 😂 One character even had my (maiden) last name! Apart from that, the writing was excellent. It was suitably festive. It held up well as a standalone. The plot was interesting and kept me guessing. The characters were likable (and hilarious). And to add a cherry on top, we get some yummy sounding recipes at the end. What more can you ask for?!

This was so fun! I’m so glad I listened to audio version. The accents really pushed it over the edge. Strong Stephanie Plum vibes but cozy-clean. I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the series.

Is there anything better than Christmas in New York? The Boldano family has long held secrets revealed when a scam artist comes looking to take advantage of Jamie. When the scam artist is found dead suspicion is cast upon the Boldano family. Mia does her best to help Jamie and his family overcome the family secrets as well as help find the true killer. Mia works with reporter Teri again and I like how they are slowly becoming friends but won't admit it.

This book has everything I love. Nonna's contest to see who had the best Christmas lights put such a smile on my face. The recipes at the end of the book are always welcome and I can't wait to make a few. I was hoping Nona's pignoli cookie recipe would be included but sadly it wasn't. I love the characters. They feel just like family and are so inviting and warm. Mia's relationship with her family is wonderful. I especially love Nonna. I also loved seeing the progress in Mia and Shane's relationship. The mystery was well done and I was guessing until the end about the killer. This was an excellent addition to the series and I can't wait for more.

“A Catering Hall Mystery” series has become one of my favorites. I have always enjoyed it, but with the addition of the latest addition, It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Murder, it has won my heart completely. I love Mia. She has everything the main character needs to be interesting, entertaining, and keep readers reading. This Christmas story is everything you would expect from a mob-related New York-style cozy and much, much more.

It’s almost Christmas, and Mia is once again trying to juggle a lot of different events and activities. Mia is busy trying to keep her business running and her clients happy while planning a family holiday celebration. The last thing she needs is to get involved in another murder investigation, but of course, that is precisely what she gets. If she could just ignore it, she would, but if she doesn’t find the killer, her best friend or a member of his family, which includes mob connections, will end up behind bars. Then out of the blue, Mia’s mother returns and decides she wants to be a part of Mia’s life once again. Not knowing which way to turn, Mia dives into the investigation and hopes that when the smoke clears, everything will be back to normal.

The suspect list is long and grows almost until the end of the book. Evidence is all pointing in one direction, but you might say there is just a bit too much of it pointing at Mia’s friends. Was this a mob hit, or something more personal? Everyone she knows seems to have had a motive to kill the victim. Even Mia’s estranged mother, Gia comes under suspicion. All the returning characters play a part in the story, and some, like Nonna and her friends, make you laugh and cheer. Christmas is a time when families come together, but some families, especially those mob ones, new or old, might be better off staying apart. In some ways, Mia’s family falls into the less is more category, but at other times, they definitely do better when all together.

In the end, Mia helps find the killer and rescues Christmas for her family and friends. Readers who have not read any of this series should do so right away, and those who have read the entire series will love this addition. It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Murder is an excellent holiday treat, with everything you need to keep readers happy, including the recipes for some fabulous eats.

Dollycas's Thoughts

The Christmas season has Mia Carina dashing through the snow to keep up with all the Belle View Banquet Manor events. From a Sweet Sixteen party that really needs to impress the guests to a party for a 1-year-old with a Nativity Theme complete with animals, Mia and Shane accept all the challenges in order to have the over-the-top events go off exactly as planned.

In addition to her job, Mia gets caught up in a lot of family drama. A secret is uncovered about her friend Jamie and the aftermath has Mia right in the middle. Her mother also returns to town surprising everyone and her brother is still in jail and wondering if he will have a place in the family business when he gets out. Plus her grandmother has enlisted everyone she can to help her decorate for the holidays. She plans to win the neighborhood's decorating contest but she has some stiff competition. One display gets a lot of attention though when an actual stiff is found amongst the elves in Santa's workshop.

Mia is familiar with the corpse and knows there are plenty of suspects with means, motive, and opportunity including a few folks she holds near and dear. She will be making her list and checking it twice to wrap up the murder before Christmas dinner is served.

_____

Maria DiRico has served up quite a mystery in It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder.

Mia makes me laugh so much. She has been through a lot with the mobsters in her family especially as they now try to go straight. However, there are a few tough guys still around if she needs them. Her new employee Shane has her motor running along with just about every woman he comes in contact with. Cammie is still working as little as possible while spending as much of her ex, Detective Pete Dianopolis's money as she can while he tries to win her back. Mia's friend Jamie falls apart as he gets some upsetting news. Her grandmother Elisabetta is hilarious and always up to something. All these characters are true to life and are well-developed. The dialogues are full of Italian and New York phases which just makes me enjoy the characters even more.

I really enjoy the way this author twists the mystery elements together with every life's ups and downs. In this installment, that means a lot of Christmas spirit and holiday drama and I loved it! I was completely entertained tagging along with Mia as she sorted through the clues while being there for her friend and staying on top of her grandmother's antics. The ending was exciting but there was a final twist that had me scratching my head just a little bit.

The extravagant Christmas displays and the competition between the blocks were really interesting and I know it would be a lot of fun to view them all in person. No matter where you live people try to outdo their neighbors when it comes to decorations but having so many full blocks full of finery as the author described would be amazing. The donation aspect was nice too.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder is a delightful holiday cozy mystery filled to the brim with family drama and murder. I am so happy to get caught up on this series just in time for book #4, Four Parties and a Funeral which will be released on March 28. I am excited to visit these characters again so soon. Stay tuned for my review.

IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE MURDER, the third book in the Catering Hall Mystery series by Maria DiRico (aka Ellen Byron), has all the ingredients for a laugh-out-loud Christmas cozy mystery! Over-the-top neighbor Christmas decorations feud – check. Mobsters trying to go straight – check. Ridiculously extravagant parties – check. Dead body in Santa’s workshop – check! And so, so much more that it was impossible to put the book down. With her witty humor, Ms. DiRico pens a multi-faceted story with engaging characters. The protagonist, Mia Carina, is a mobster’s daughter trying to keep her dad on the straight and narrow. As if that’s not enough of a plotline, there’s someone claiming to be the mobster’s son’s half-brother; another mobster’s son who’s trying to leave the business and work in Mia’s catering hall; and Mia’s jailbird brother. If it sounds like a lot is going on, there is, yet Ms. DiRico expertly keeps all the plotlines straight (and more importantly entertaining) and not once did I feel like I was lost.

While it might seem that the murder mystery itself could get lost amongst all the subplots, it doesn’t. The author knows how to write a tight and well-paced plot and the seemingly random subplots weave into the murder as the story progresses. There are twists, turns, and laughs galore and instead of playing armchair detective, I sat back and enjoyed the ride. If you’d rather try to spot the killer as you read, there are plenty of clues and suspects to keep you on your toes. With a surprising reveal (or two), the story wraps up with a promise of future happiness for Mia. I, for one, can’t wait to see what’s coming next!

Running a catering hall, there are all sorts of delicious dishes and desserts coming from the Belle View kitchen. Ms. DiRico includes several Italian recipes at the back of the book.

I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

"It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder” the third instalment in the A Catering Hall Mystery series by Maria DiRico.

Astoria, Queens, is decorated within an inch of its life for the Christmas season, and Mia Carina is juggling her job at the Belle View catering hall with a case of murder...

I loved Mia, her Nonna, Cammie, Shane and the rest of the side characters. I. Hoping there is romance in Mias future …
The mystery is interesting and well plotted, I found myself guessing and second-guessing myself on whodunnit right to the very end. I couldn’t put the book down, read it in a day .

I highly recommend this book to all my cozy lover friends and I can’t wait for book three!

A busy holiday catering season, a personal crisis in her best friend Jamie's life, a stubborn camel and even more stubborn and spoiled teenage birthday girl, a handsome new employee, a surprise visit from her estranged mother, Nonna 's slightly crazy competition over decorated front yards and murder have Mia Carina running all over the big Apple!

Mia Carina faces the most chaotic holiday season yet. When a stranger reveals startling information to her friend Jamie, Mia is shocked and suspicious at the same time and when the stranger is found murdered, in a holiday display, and Jamie is a suspect, she adds sleuth to her "to do" list. There is so much going on in this book and I loved it! The reader gains more insight to Mia's past and the story was touching. The mystery was like a big puzzle and all the pieces fell into place at the end of the book. I think that Mia's mob ties, through her now legit father, are fun to read. It adds a unique background to the cozy genre. Add in a handsome new employee, Shane, at the catering company and you have, hopefully, a love interest for Mia!

The book has a wonderfully complicated mystery, holiday joy, family and friends and humor - it's a perfect holiday read!

You can always count on Maria DiRico (Ellen Byron) for a fabulous read. And It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder, the third book in the Catering Hall mystery series, may be the best one yet. With the perfect blend of family secrets, complex mystery, and Christmas spirit, this is a book that is destined to brighten your holiday season.

Between an over-the-top party for an entitled sixteen-year-old, a nativity-themed party for a one-year-old, and Belle View Banquet Hall’s own company party, Mia Carina has her hands full. Add to that her Nonna’s extravagant holiday light competition and an unexpected visit from her estranged mother, and Mia’s life becomes even more complicated. When Lorenzo Puglia appears, claiming to be her best friend Jamie Boldano’s long lost brother, Mia’s suspicions (and those of the Boldano mafia family) are instantly aroused. And when Lorenzo is murdered, Mia finds herself in the middle of a mystery that threatens the very lives of those she loves – as well as her own.

Everything about this book is amazing. The characters are sympathetic and personable. I love that the Boldanos are portrayed against type here. Mia is perceptive, intelligent, and resourceful, with a sparkling sense of humor. Her Nonna, Elizabetta is a hoot – her all-out efforts to win the neighborhood holiday decorating competition are hysterical. Shane, Mia’s potential love interest, is not your typical Adonis; he has a charming layer of complexity that (in my opinion) totally justifies Mia’s interest. And Posi, Mia’s brother, is one of my favorite characters. Although he is in jail, he eagerly awaits the day when he can join Mia in running the banquet hall. Even Mia’s pets Doorstop (the cat) and Pizzazz (the bird) are adorable additions to the story. The mystery, too, is a brilliant roller-coaster ride, with enough twists and turns to keep you turning page after page. It is layered and suspenseful, with an ending that you just might not see coming.

Even though I received an ARC of the book, I also borrowed a copy of the audio from my library. And I must say that this is one of the best narrated cozies I have come across. Devon Sorvari gives a brilliant performance that really draws you into the story.

In It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder, Maria DiRico has captured the essence of the ideal holiday cozy mystery. With something for everyone, it is a must-read in this fantastic series.

Note: I received an ARC of It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder from NetGalley and Kensington Books. The above is my honest review.

This book was so exciting to read, I enjoyed every minute of it.
Mia is working hard at the catering hall she and her father run, and with the holidays fast approaching, she certainly has her hands full.
The last thing Mia needs is family drama, unfortunately, she’s knee deep in it. Her estranged mother shows up, her best friend finds out some shocking things about his family, and Mia herself is struggling with intimate feelings about a coworker.
Mix in a murder, and you’ve got the makings for It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder, by Maria DiRico.
I definitely recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a well written, fast paced cozy mystery.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book.

Another 4-4.5 stars in the series. So far this series has been a hit with Mia and the gang, now to include Shane. I have to say Jamie really surprised me in this book and to the author’s credit she had me really disliking him for a hot minute until I came around.
It’s the holiday season, business is booming and what more can Mia ask for but another murder to solve. This time it involves an alleged long lost brother of her childhood friend Jaime. This revelation leads to devastating family secrets with even more fatal consequences. Now Mia has to clear Jamie and his family.

While she’s dealing with that headache another one in the form of her estranged mother arrives in town wanting to reconcile. Is Mia right to be suspicious or should she give dear old mom another chance.

Meanwhile what’s happening between Mia and Shane?

Maria DiRico’s Catering Hall Mysteries is a cozy series that I always look forward to reading, and It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder is the perfect way to start off your Holiday reading!

Besides the well developed characters and fantastic community in this series, the other thing I also know I can count on in lots of action and crazy event situations. Some cozies spend a lot of time having the main character just going to talk to people to find out who the killer is, but DiRico incorporates so many fun and interesting scenarios that at times this series has the fast pace of a thriller. I never find myself skimming her books…. and that is some of the highest praise I can give.

If you haven’t already started this series from the beginning, you should do so with Here Comes the Body. But if you’ve already read the first two in the Catering Hall series then you can look forward to a crazy first birthday, an outrageous sweet sixteen that introduces us to a new character that I look forward to seeing in future books, Nona and her posse dominating the Christmas decorating scene along with a dark horse that helps them become the talk of the town, an estranged mother, and so much more!

This is the third book in the Catering Hall Mystery series and the best book so far, in my opinion.
The holiday themed cozy mystery was hilarious with the Italian characters making it lively, dramatic and festive. The plot was easy to follow and very winter/Christmassy themed. The Italian Grandma, well I loved her.
The characters you're going to want to read about them here and in the other books in this series.
Scrumptious sounding Italian dishes recipes included.

Pretty dreadful. I really love Christmas mysteries, but I need to quit reading books that include catering. Having spent decades in food service, I know how it works, especially around the holidays, and the lack of any type of realistic portrayal just makes me crazy. The lead character in this story runs a catering/banquet hall, but spends virtually no time at all working during the busiest weeks of the year.
Beyond that, the writing is just sub-par. This is an author who never uses one word when she can use twenty, who uses more characters than are remotely needed, but insists on including them into the conclusion, whether it makes sense or not. And don’t get me started on her portrayal on a mob connected family. Nothing but trite cliches there…

Event Planner Mia Carina has her hands full planning two upcoming events at the Belle View Banquet Manor in New York City. She also has to keep her Nonna from going to war with nearby streets over the neighborhood holiday decorating contest. She is also involved in some drama related to the Boldano crime family who back the banquet center as one of their legitimate businesses. When her longtime friend Jamie Boldano is being accused of murder, Mia will do whatever it takes to prove his innocence.

This book is the third one in this delightful series. I really like the behind the scenes look at the events Mia is in charge of. The organized crime element is handled with a light touch and creates a unique backdrop for so many interesting situations. As I was reading I kept thinking that Mia and her Nonna would give Stephanie Plum and her grandmother a run for their money in the situations they find themselves in.

There is a lot going on in this book, almost too much. In addition to her job, Mia has to juggle developments in her own family as well as helping her good friend, Jamie. I kept getting the different suspects mixed up which distracted me from the overall story. Other than that, I really enjoyed the book. The friendship Mia formed with her teenage client was touching. I liked Mia’s estranged mother, Gia, much more than I had expected. I also like the promise of romance between Mia and her employee Shane, who had once modeled in Italy. There are also just enough Italian words and phrases included in the book to give the book authenticity without interrupting the flow of the story. I like the book and the series and am curious to find out what is next for Mia and Shane as well as the entire Carina family.

I received this ebook from NetGalley through the courtesy of Kensington Books. An advance copy was provided to me at no cost, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder is the third book in the Catering Hall mystery series by author Maria DiRico. Maria DiRico also writes the Cajun Country mysteries under the name Ellen Byron, and I fell in love with her writing style by reading that series. When I found out she was writing a new series (even if it is under a different name) I couldn’t wait to read it. The Catering Hall mysteries are just as enjoyable.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder is set during the Christmas season, with Belle View events center bustling with all the events scheduled. While all of this is going on, Belle View manager Mia Carina also has to deal with a friend receiving the difficult news that he is adopted, Mia’s estranged mother showing up, and a work crush that she’s trying desperately not to act on. In between all of this a body shows up and leads to several friends and a family member being suspected of murder.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought the mystery was great, with several different twists that led to a reveal I did not see coming. I was happy that several characters progressed with their relationships and thought that Mia showed a lot of growth throughout this book. I also was thrilled with the way the book ended. I’m looking forward to finding out what happens next in book #4!

This is the third book in the Catering Hall Mystery series and I always enjoy these shenanigan-rich tales. It was great to be back in bustling Astoria, Queens, New York City for a few hours, to meet the residents there and solve a perplexing mystery.

The primary amateur detective in this one is manager and events organiser Mia Carina. Belle View Banquet Manor is the catering hall that her father has created. Mia's life is as busy as ever including nativity parties and a sixteenth birthday bash to organise. Mia's former crush, Jamie is in town and so is her mum. Then a possible half-brother of Jamie's rocks up, too...

I was really engaged in the mystery from the start. There is a lot happening and a lot of layers and clues to sift through. The unusual thing about this series is that it's set in a city rather than a small town, giving a different vibe than the majority of cozies. Maria DiRico's well-formulated and the super-packed plot becomes surprisingly complex as the story develops. I continued to warm to Mia, finding her ebullience, confidence and intuitiveness very refreshing. I very much appreciated Maria DiRico's superb and varied characterisation, even though some of the characters weren't particularly personable. Apart from Mia herself, my favourite was probably Nonna Elisabetta, who added another dimension of humour to the story and had me cracking a smile or two, as she has in previous instalments.

Maria DiRico writes with such flair and an easy style. There were a plethora of suspects to choose from and with some zig-zagging along the way, this was a story that held my attention well and I loved that things came together for a clear resolution. Being a culinary cozy, there are some delicious sounding culinary treats within. The interesting growth for the series regulars cements my enthusiasm in anticipating what Maria DiRico has in store for Mia and her family and acquaintances next.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my own request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

This is one of my favorite series! Mia and her nonna are two characters I always enjoy spending time with, and the rest of the gang is a lot of fun, too. This was a wonderful Christmas-themed cozy. I wasn't able to figure out the whodunit, but then again, I never do. This is definitely a series to give a try if you enjoy a fun cozy mystery!

I enjoyed my most recent visit to Belle View catering hall in Queens, New York. Mia Carina is busy organizing events including a full nativity birthday party for a one year old and a sweet sixteen for a drama queen. Add to all of this, the reappearance of her estranged mother, her friend Jamie finding out he was adopted and the sudden appearance of a biological brother, Lorenzo as well as the Astoria Christmas decorating contest that her grandma is determined to win. Mia doesn't have a second to herself, but when Lorenzo is found dead in the lawn ornaments, she jumps into the investigation when Jamie's brother becomes a suspect.

This book is part of my Christmas reading and it is nice to have a few mysteries in the mix. I love the characters in this book. Think stereotypical mobsters, big hair and huge families and you will understand why this humorous series is becoming a favourite of mine. Cammie works with Mia and they are great friends. She has an in with Detective Pete (her ex-husband who wants to get back together) and is able to share things with Mia. They always provide some comic relief. I mentioned Mia's mother and she plays an important part in this story. I hope she sticks around in future books. This book has mobsters coming out of the woodwork, with the death of Lorenzo. So many suspects (it seems no one liked him), and lots of twists had me constantly changing my mind. I loved the ending of this story that had me sitting up in my seat when the final reveal/showdown occurs. I never would have guessed. There is a little bit of a romantic attraction beginning and we shall see if anything develops between Mia and Shane in future books. Well done Maria DiRico! If you enjoy cozies with quirky and fun characters, great mysteries and well developed plots, then pick up this series, especially this Christmas outing. I did a read/listen with this book and both formats were enjoyable. Devon Sorvari narrated this story and does a great job with it. The pacing and expression were right on and the various voices allowed me to identify the speaker. I have listened to other books she has narrated and enjoyed them all. I will not hesitate to listen to more of her work. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.

You'll laugh your way through this Italian flavored holiday themed mystery.
Christmas is a time for family (sometimes spelled with a capital F) and for competition.
Mia Carina is in charge (well, officially) of the catering and event business owned by the Boldano Family. It is one of the few legitimate enterprises they run. That doesn't make it any less stressful.
Fortunately she has employees of mixed talents helping her out.

Mia's own family also has varied talents and a varied past. Her mother moved on several years ago, her brother is currently awaiting a jail sentence to run its course, and Nonna is a story all in herself.
This time her main theme is the neighborhood holiday decoration competition with proceeds going to charity.

The family drama hits on all levels throughout the book, beginning when an imposter tries to pass himself off as a relative to Mia's friend, Jamie Boldano, who was never told he was adopted.
(Spoiler) But wait- there is a plot twist waiting to be discovered.
Then, Mia's mother shows up unannounced and very unexpectedly. What could her motive possibly be? Mia's father is happily in another relationship and Nonna is the opposite of welcoming.

There is romance in the story, but not in a sweet, sappy way one wishes for at Christmas.
And there is MURDER! But the victim has made so many poor choices and upset so many people, its impossible to narrow down the suspect pool.

The story pace is quick yet entertaining and enjoyable. The characters are well developed and relatable. You will laugh and wish you could really have friends like these.

The recipes included in the book will tempt you!

Review:

Mia is busy with her events planning, she has a sweet sixteen birthday and first birthday party to plan. And her good friend, Jamie, finds out that he has a brother that he never knew about. Something does not feel right about the brother and Mia plans on looking into it. But before she can, a dead body turns up and she must find out who the murderer is.

The characters are well rounded and well rounded. She has a special relationship with her dad and her brother, and her mother has come for a visit, which does not happen very often. She will have to figure out what her mother really wants.

The writing style flows shoothy and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I could picture the action taking place in my mind’s eye. The mystery was well plotted and not easily solved. I had quite a few suspects that I considered and I did not know who was responsible until it was revealed at the end.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I cannot wait to see what is in store for Mia and her family.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Oh how I love this series!! I was so hesitant to read this but went with a friends recommendation and here I am, three books later, completely enthralled and missing NYC more than I usually do. This was a really good read - the mystery was very good and for me, it was the utter best because I never knew who did it and/or why. You get a ton of Nonna in this one as well and Mia and the Catering Center group [Cami is a scream, though I am not sure just how she stays employed] and you get to see a side of Terry Fuoquoa [sp] that will not soon leave your imagination. Add in some serious decorating competition, a 16th birthday party that nightmares are made of and of course murder, and you have one crazy and hilarious, and amazing read. I so love it when I read a book and I am not disappointed once nor do I dread picking it up - that was this book from beginning to end.

There are several really great things that happen in this book that I absolutely CANNOT share as they need to be experienced by the reader. Some of it initially made me angry and squirm with embarrassment for the characters, but it all works out in the end and it is just so darn lovely. These little treats will just make this book for you [not that they are totally needed, as this is a great read with or without them], and you will have all the feels at the end. Add in all the amazing recipes at the end [I. WAS. DROOLING.] that is just "icing on the cake" [ba-dam boom. I'll be here all week folks!]. Very well done. I cannot wait for the next one.

Thank you to NetGalley, Maria DiRico, and Kensington Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder by Maria DiRico is a fun cozy mystery set at Christmas. The Bell Vista Catering Hall calendar is packed with birthday and holiday parties. Some even include live animals. In the midst of the holiday madness a stranger tries to scam his way into the Boldano family. That’s “Family” with a capital F. Then, he turns up dead, in Mia’s neighbor’s front yard Christmas display. There are a myriad of suspects, including Mia’s lifelong friend Jamie Boldano. The police are looking pretty hard at the whole Boldano family. Mis needs to get other viable suspects to the for front. Mia’s nonna is competing in the neighborhood Christmas light contest and Mia’s mom suddenly shows back up in her life.
I found this book fast paced, quirky and fun to read. I love Mia’s nonna, Elizabetta. There’s a new “hot guy” working at the catering hall, yippee!
I give it 5 stars.
