When you start the book and the sneaky link has your name... 😂

All jokes aside though, Rose Gold was a pleasant experience. It doesn’t read like a romantic comedy, but Marley’s enthusiastic, quick-witted thoughts and responses kept me laughing. I love her confident spirit and self-efficacy. A lot of female characters in books lend themselves toward the same personality-dormant openings but she’s unapologetic about her extroversion. She reminds me a lot of some of my line sisters & it’s refreshing to be able to relate her character to other people I’ve met. I also enjoyed that I could gather Lyncoln & Marley’s personality differences, not just via their internal monologues, but through their dialogue. You can tell a lot about a character by what they choose to say and keep to themselves, which is why I love reading in the first person perspective. I gathered quickly that Lyncoln was more serious, reserved whereas Marley was verbose and light-hearted and the way their interactions play out throughout the book, you can tell it's an explosive chemistry from the get go, just because of their opposing energies. (Also, as an AKA, I thoroughly enjoyed Marley’s outfit choice for the meet cute scene & the nod to D9. They’re always far & few between in fiction & I love them.) I also couldn’t help but love Lyncoln’s protectiveness of his brother. The scene where he told Deuce about their mom made me tear up (even more than when Lyncoln beat up Xavier & left Marley).
I did find it a little confusing in the first part of the book with the consistent influx of detail during the introduction of other characters and I feel that if the author were to break up some of the character descriptions by adding an authentic interaction with the ones we haven't 'met' yet (a phone call/meet up where they were interacting with the MC) before they're being described would help us as readers keep track of that character rather than forget about them and have to circle back to their description. As for the progression of the story and pacing, I am so used to fast paced, right out the gate we're already practicing the baby-making, so I liked the slow burn romance in the first half, but then when you got to the naughty scenes they were..... whew!
Also, this might not be a popular opinion, but I don’t care—I like that Lyncoln stood up for himself and walked away from Marley, even if the reasons were a little misguided. Marley did choose to see Xavier and put herself in that situation knowing full well that though her feelings were platonic, his were CLEARLY not and on top of that, she never gave Lyncoln the chance to explain the situation with Deuce before she jumped to deflect when she herself was upset when Lyncoln had a business lunch with another woman. I understand her side, but if the tables were turned she knows she would be throwing hands first and asking questions later, so I couldn’t bring myself to side with her in that particular instance. Looking forward to what happens next in Part II. Whatever it is, it's going to be good. And I. AM. READY!

Lessons learned

I really enjoyed this book because of the way the author used and taught so many life lessons through literature. I love the intelligence and street life issues. I’m not sure how control vs concerned and protection was used. I couldn’t put it down.

I’m looking forward to the next book.

Marley is a radio host/ media influencer who meets Lyncoln (professor and activist) when she interviews him. Sparks fly for both but Marley doesn't have the time or inclination for relationships. Can Lyncoln show her what she's missing?

I love the chemistry between these two. Their banter was fun, and very cute and the attraction was clear. I like the Philly setting (shoutout to my home town, lol) and although I also liked that it reflected so much of what was happening at the time (police involved shootings, protests, and media activism), I found that in some places it distracted me, like there was a little too much of it. But I did like the support systems the two of them had and how they melded their lives together. Marley wavering was expected because she had the doubts from the beginning, and Lyncoln's family obligations taking over his mind was a bit predictable too so I saw the break-up coming a mile away. But I did like this.

Yamina and Dart's side story was entertaining enough, but I know the author has another series about just them. There was so much of them in this story though. Makes you wonder what's left to say.
