It all began when a dying man with an arrow in his chest grabs her ankle.

During a heat wave at a Santa Fe resort, Julienne has the resort owner pressuring her to solve the murder. The victim is a high profile business man who made enemies rather than friends, leaving Julienne with a roster of suspects. She was supposed to be training the staff and spending quality time with Mason rather than investigating a murder. The heat turns up when an old girlfriend of Mason's checks in and is determined to get back together.

Arrowed is the fourth book in Avery Daniel's Resort to Murder series and is an exciting contemporary cozy mystery. If you like Cleo Coyle, Maddy Hunter, Duffy Brown, Lynn Cahoon, and Annette Dashofy, then you'll love this series with a strong intelligent sleuth, lavish settings, and tantalizing mysteries.

I was born and raised in Colorado, graduated from college with a degree in business administration and worked in fortune 500 companies and Department of Defense my entire life. My most eventful job (fires, suicide, kidnapping, etc) was apartment management for 352 units. I still live in Colorado with two brother black cats as my spoiled and beloved companions. I volunteer for a cat shelter, enjoy scrapbooking and card making, photography, and painting in watercolor and acrylic. I inherited a love for reading from my mother and grandmother and grew up talking about books at the dinner table. I was the odd child in school who knew the names of Henry VIII's wives because of that dinner talk.

I had no idea what to expect with Arrowed as this is the first book I’ve read by this author & in the series. But this will definitely be a series I’m following from now on. I instantly liked Julienne and had no problems picking up with her adventures in book 4 instead of the beginning.

Julienne’s job in resort management has her in New Mexico in Arrowed, specifically training employees at a resort now under her employer’s ownership. This allows for a mix of new characters and even a bit of Native American legend to raise the stakes on a gruesome murder or two. As I said, I liked Julienne right off – she is engaging, smart, intuitive, and determined. I liked her swoony boyfriend Mason too. He seems like a really good guy who is clearly very much in love with her.

The mystery is creative and layered, with interesting elements like resort life, corporate gossip, and the ancient Native American legend I mentioned. It progresses at a steady pace and includes a host of suspects (any of whom you’d be happy if they were the culprit because they’re just that unlikable) to challenge the armchair sleuths among us.

Bottom Line: Arrowed by Avery Daniels is an enjoyable, fairly quick read, and I especially liked meeting the series heroine Julienne and her boyfriend Mason. The plot was well-developed with a cast of intriguing supporting characters and a cleverly layered murder mystery to solve. The setting added to the enjoyment of the book & I look forward to seeing where Daniels takes her intrepid heroine next!

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)

Reviewer’s Note: Readers may want to be aware that there are some suggestive implications in this book but it is definitely what I would consider a “clean read” (no cursing, etc.)

Working as a travel trainer for a well-known resort with locations across the United States or even the world seems like a fun career to be in. Daniels expresses the enjoyment her characters place in their careers, while also allowing room for the wild side to come out. This is where the sleuthing comes in. Not only is main character, Julienne LaMere, able to travel around the country training resort management on their operating system, but she also has a reputation for solving the occasional murder that literally winds up on her guest room doorstep. For cozy mystery readers, there is nothing better than that, right?

Julienne and her beau Mason, are traveling to Santa Fe, New Mexico for the next round of training. The Enchanted Canyon Resort has staff who need to be trained on the new operating system, so Julienne is hoping to also explore the desert while she is there and Mason is excited about his photography opportunity. Immediately, Julienne notices the large corporate retreat that is also booked for the weekend, causing the atmosphere to feel stifling and bitter. When the first cocktail party they attend ends with the corporate leader grabbing onto her ankle, and spewing words about a curse with his dying breath, Julienne immediately knows what is coming next. Sleuthing and dawning her investigator hat, she is asked to assist the local police department in finding the killer. After the second body is dropped against her room door, she knows time is running out before the killer gets tired of her snooping and comes after her next.

Daniels provides the reader with well-developed characters and originality. The characters are fun and make the reader want to know more about each of them, which Daniels makes happen with Julienne's amateur detective work. The story is well-written with minor spelling and grammatical errors, but this should not hinder the reader's enjoyment. Daniel's pace is steady, slowly working up the reader throughout the entire story until the killer is revealed. There is a bit of predictability; however, the writing is engaging and the way the mystery is unraveled is quite creative. Overall, the story will entertain readers who like cozy mysteries, amateur detectives, and chick lit. Even though this is the fourth installment within the Resort to Murder Mystery series, the reader is still able to read this story as a standalone. It is purely reader preference if the previous books in the series are read prior to this one, but may shed more light on Julienne's background and how she progresses her methods over time.

An electronic copy was provided to Turning Another Page by Reedsy Discovery and in no way affects the honesty of this review. We provide a four-star rating to Arrowed by Avery Daniels.

I enjoyed this book. I have loved this series and have read each book striaght after each other, which I don't normally do but they were that good. All four books are set in different hotels and have a core group of characters which are just great but they are four very different stories. The mystery in this book was interesting and I liked the way the murder weapon was linked in with the history of the area and the use of the very unusual weapon added to the questions. I had guessed who the killer was and why, but it was still a lot of fun finding out how Julienne worked it out. The characters are what keeps me coming back to this series because things between Julienne and Mason never go smoothly with all the killers, family and ex's that get in the way. It is just a fun light hearted cozy mystery that is highly enjoyable and full of a few chuckles along the way.
With Julienne's boss buying up another hotel he sends Julienne and her boyfriend to teach them the computer system there will need to switch to. Mason and Julienne's romantic date is interrupted when a man grabs her ankle, before babbling about curses and promptly dies on them. The murder weapon comes from a display of a native American bow and lends its self to the curse theory but who would have the opportunity? The dead man wasn't well liked so there was plenty of motive. Julieanne's boss asks her to assistant the police and aided by the hotel staff she starts a quite investigate of her own. The problem is with everybody under one roof the fact that she is investigating doesn't stay quite for long and another body is dumped at her door. Can Julienne ignore an ex girlfriend that is coming onto her man long enough to catch a killer, before she herself becomes the target?

Arrowed is a fast-paced cozy mystery with a delightful main character. It is the 4th book in the Resort to Murder Mysteries, but my first experience with the series. The books seem to stand alone, but it offers enough references (with no spoilers) to previous cases to help build the universe.

I feel that Daniels gave us just enough of Julienne to make us get to know her and invest in her story, but I wish there were a bit more breadcrumbs to her story to help us get an idea of her background. With that said, I will read other books of the series in order, but I don't think it needs to be done that way.

There was this funny tone to the novel, which I loved. Daniels prose is engaging, and it draws you in from the beginning and keeps it that way.

My favorite Nancy Drew PC game was Shadow Ranch; I mention the game because I kept picturing that game's narrator's voice as I read Arrowed. Also, the similar setting from the description offered me this nostalgic connection that made me instantly want to read the book as cozies are my least favourite mystery subgenre because they tend to be too modern and formulaic. Let me tell you, Arrowed has started to make me want to try more books like these! I credit this to Daniels' talent. She created great characters, fleshed out but also relatable and familiar. This series would make great Hallmark Mysteries movies!

My Review: I received a complimentary copy of this book via Pump Up Your Book, the following is my honest review and opinion. I am still relatively new to the Cozy Mystery genre and am always looking for new authors and series to try so took a chance on this book. Even though I haven't read the previous books in this series, I was able to jump right into the book. While a couple of the characters are repeat characters in the series, for the most part it was a new setting and a mostly new cast of characters so it was easy to get into without any backstory. Normally I really struggle with books written in first person narration but this one was so easy to read that I didn't get hung up on that aspect of the book. I absolutely loved the setting of this story, the New Mexico feel is so evident (and the food descriptions made me so hungry). The mystery was intriguing with a lot of clues and players; I did figure it out quite a bit before Julienne but there was the question of motive that kept me reading and finding out how they were caught. I really enjoyed this book, it was easy to settle into and a pretty quick read. I am very intrigued with this series and I think I am going to go back and pick up the previous books in this series.

Loved Julienne (and will go back and read the earlier books that introduce her) and how her plans to train a resort staff on a new computer system suddenly expand to include solving a murder. How could she not get involved when the murder victim literally clutched at her foot, leaving Julienne horrified and stunned at the arrow in his chest. Of course she'll have to unravel this case, even if the victim was unlikable. Julienne asks smart questions---she'd make Columbo proud!--and follows every lead, displaying her flair for sleuthing and her determination to find the killer.
The resort's setting in scenic Santa Fe offers a nice opportunity for Julienne to spend time with her visiting boyfriend Mason--that is, until his ex, Tiffany, just happens to show up in hopes of winning him back. "Arrowed" is a very fast read, because author Avery Daniels keeps us guessing with multiple murder suspects and richly drawn characters. Can't wait to see what Julienne does next!

No matter where Julienne goes, there's sure to be excitement....and murder. This time she goes to Santa Fe to train the employees who work for a hotel her employer just purchased. She was lucky to have her boyfriend Mason keep her company on this trip. Out on a walk, she finds another body and gets pulled into investigating the murder. Since she has a history of finding bodies, her employer has trained her in security and wants her to find the murderer before it damages the hotels reputation. There's a lot of suspects since the murder victim wasn't a nice guy. Add to the situation, a second murder happens. Now Julienne must solve 2 murders before the business convention ends and all the suspects checkout of the hotel.

Arrowed by Avery Daniels is the 4th book in A Resort to Murder Mystery series, and another fun book. I really enjoyed this book/series and am looking forward to reading the next book. Julienne is sent to a Sante Fe resort that her boss has recently acquired. Julienne is sent to train the staff, when a murder occurs and her boss instructors her to take care of it. Julienne is happy her boyfriend Mason agreed to come along, he will be taking scenic pictures while she trains. On top of everything, Mason's ex girlfriend shows up to win him back. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. If you love fun cozy mysteries, I highly recommend this book.

Arrowed: Resort to Murder, Book 4 is Avery Daniels latest in the Resort series. The book is set in New Mexico around local Indian lore. A Resort attendee, Merritt, was found murdered with an arrow in his throat. Merritt’s dying words was that the curse killed him. Julienne is a manager in training and her boss wants her to assist the police. I felt like the characters were written in a way that brought them to life and they stayed true to themselves. I felt like the writing was do good and the pace was quick. A very enjoyable cozy mystery. Looking forward to reading another book in the series. I received an arc for free in exchange for my volunteer honest review.

This book follows Julienne who is sent to a resort to train the staff and finds herself being pressured to solve a murder. It's a very captivating adventure where you watch Julienne try to solve the crime. We also get to see Julienne get some much needed time with her boyfriend.

This was a great cozy mystery that pulls you in and won't leave you until the adventure is over and the murder is solved. What a fabulous mystery along the lines of Cleo Coyle and many others!

Charming read and fun but a little hard to follow if you have distractions (like grandkids! Lol) Terrific storyline and characters but a little unevenly written. I would have liked to see a couple of situations fleshed out more. Great setting, and lovely background characters.

It’s a pleasure to read a cozy with a strong, professional female protagonist and this one was definitely a pleasure. Julienne certainly delivers and while she is professional and direct, she has a caring side that makes her relatable.

What I enjoyed most was how the author wove in a local Native American story into her own story, making you feel like you were soaking up some local Santa Fe history along with the whodunit. I will be checking out the first three books on the series and watching for future entries. The reason I took off one star was that there were quite a few spelling and grammatical issues throughout and the derail me from things for a few pages.

Resorting to murder is never restful

Posted on May 6, 2021 by michellelovatosbookreviews, world's first book color commentator, book reviews with a twist

How can murder possibly benefit a southwestern United States resort lodge? Ask Julianne. She will tell you that it can’t.
Perhaps that is why our dear, smart traveling resort-chain software trainer is so interested in solving the Santa Fe murder of a high-profile businessman uniquely clad with a rather dangerous arrow protruding through his paunch. Especially after he grabs her ankle and, in his dying breath, somehow indicates to Julianne that it is time for her to don her super sleuth suit and sniff the killer out from the corner shadows.
This is no Steve Martin Comedy routine, all you readers old enough to giggle instantly at the absurd murder weapon. Instead, it is one of those unfortunate times when death is decidedly dealt to the dummy in the arrow suit laying on the floor.
Never fear, of course. Our razor-sharp heroine is on the job. And Julianne is about to slice a cucumber of clues to solve this senseless, savage, slaying.
Life becomes complicated when Mason, her over-attentive love blade, stabs at the dark as he wields his weapon against Julianne’s enemies and helps her, sort of, smooth over the seamless sinking of someone we all know is superfluous. The Enchanted Canyon Resort in New Mexico will never be the same.
Enter Mason’s former love interest. Why? How? Boy, it’s a small world.
She wants Mason back and forces Julianne to do double duty, defending her sweetheart and solving a murder simultaneously.
Daniels dives deep into Indigenous Indian lore as she weaves this fast, fun plot planted deeply among the weeds of deception and disaster.
Arrowed is book four in the A Resort Murder series, a follow-up to Daniel’s first three books that can serve as a stand-alone title as easily as reading it in the series order.

This is a fun read with good character development and a well-crafted plot. There’s plenty of interesting banter, intrigue, and red herrings. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I recommend this book to younger and older adults alike. It’s clever, it’s fun and it keeps you engrossed in the mystery. Well done.

This is Book 4 in the series Resort to Murder. Julienne LeMere and Mason Sheridan are working/vacationing in a new resort outside Santa Fe. Mason is a photographer who is looking forward to exploring the desert areas surrounding the resort to expand his portfolio and spend some away from family time with Julienne. She is there to train the Management and Front Desk staff on the new software they will be using as they transfer to new ownership. After an wonderful dinner and dancing, Julienne and Mason take a stroll outside to watch the sunset and relax more with each other. In the midst of a passionate kiss, Julienne feels something on her foot. Looking down she sees a hand grabbing her ankle. It belongs to a resort guest who dies after referencing a local curse that he thinks got him.

With orders from her boss to save the reputation of the resort and his flagship company by helping the local police find the murderer, she spends her time organizing the staff to listen to guest conversations regarding the deceased, training the staff on the new software, interviewing suspects, and making time with Mason. It's hard but she works through it.

This is my first time reading a book by Avery Daniels and it won't be my last. As Julienne checks into the resort, the description of the property is detailed and vivid so you can actually see the setting in your mind. Her room description as well as the dining room brings you right into those areas with their local design yet modern approach to the resort. Her desert sunsets and sunrises are extraordinary (I have seen the Santa Fe area light shows).

Arrowed earns 5/5 Bows & Arrows...Engaging Entertainment! Bullseye! Avery Daniels has penned another exciting adventure in the fourth book of her Resort to Murder series, but this time, set in New Mexico with delightful references to Mexican and Native American culture, food, and a fascinating legend of a vengeful brave to hang a murder on. Julienne LeMere’s boss has sent her to his new acquisition, the Enchantment Canyon Resort, a “mind, body, and spirit wellness” retreat, tasked to train the staff on new operating procedures, so why not combine business with pleasure? Mason, her now official boyfriend, is eager to join her on a romantic getaway since way too many of their rendezvous have been interrupted by family or friends, so being six hours away may be the buffer they need. Milling around are guests taking advantage of the healthy activities, peaceful atmosphere, and the corporate facilities for team building and strategy meetings. Eavesdropping isn’t usually Julienne’s MO, but when some don’t realize how easily voices carry, it just happens. Just like murder...an ancient arrow, a curse, and another corporate head bites the dust! It’s been almost two years since the release of the last book in the series, so revisiting the background and character connections was welcomed...no spoilers to previous investigations. The mystery was clever, not overly complex, easily read in a weekend, with disgruntled employees, a wife with a pre-up, and employees that have nothing glowing to say about the victim, but with the gossip, banter, and various inquiries along with another dead body and...a vision?, it was an engaging challenge to my inner detective. I had a few suspects with motives on my radar, and it was quite the surprise how the final reveal was made. Avery’s writing style is colorful, steady paced, and offers a bit of humor. The well-developed characters are the star with a strong female lead, realistic up and down romance with a hunky ex-marine, and a supporting cast offering quite a range of personalities. And...a delicious drink recipe is included! The Gran Paloma mixes tequila and Gran Marnier into a refreshing respite.

When Julienne arrives at the Enchantment Canyon Resort, she expects to spend her days training the staff and her nights with her boyfriend. But, someone has other ideas. First, a high-powered executive is executed with an old-fashioned arrowed, literally grabbing Julienne to utter his final words: "The curse got me." Now, the new owner wants her to focus her attention on finding the killer and saving the resort's reputation. As if that wasn't enough, her boyfriend's ex checks in, determined to rekindle their lost romance. Will Julienne be able to solve the mystery before it's too late?

Although this is the fourth book in the Resort to Murder series, this is my first time reading this series. After a brief scene to provide the setting for this book, there is a lot of background information in the first chapter, some of which was repeated, either within the chapter or in later chapters. Having not read the previous books, I'm not sure what was summarizing information from previous books and what was being used to set the scene, but overall, most of it felt unnecessary.

As I continued, I found it very difficult to read this book do to the poor editing and inconsistencies in tense. The story was also very heavy on the narrative. I would have liked to have seen more action and dialogue and be told less.

The mystery itself, however, was interesting and unique. I figured out the whodunit long before the main character, but mostly because I knew it was going to be one of the least likely suspects.

When Julienne's boss buys a new resort in New Mexico, she is sent to train the employees on new software. Taking along her bodyguard boyfriend, this should be the opportunity they need to move their relationship to the next, more intimate, level. Except that things, like murder, keep spoiling the mood. This is a couple that just can not catch a break.
But can Julienne catch a killer?

You can read this as a stand alone mystery. The main characters are likable and it is a study of ethics and morals. The victims are corporate fat cats taking advantage of their positions and the vulnerability of honest working people and flaws in the system.

The authors style is descriptive, both in setting and details. As we read we know there is just something being held back to confirm our suspicions. The reader must wait as long as our heroine to have those suspicions confirmed.

*the book was provided by voracious readers in return for an honest review.

When I began reading Arrowed, I was somewhat sceptical as it read as a ‘Murder She Wrote’ episode and I wasn’t sure I’d see it through. But I developed sympathy for Julienne (not a carrot but the female lead); and a wry smile for Mason (the inevitable handsome/strong male); though their relationship appears convoluted at best.

The story travelled swiftly, with a number of characters, scene descriptions and contentious citing of potential perpetrator(s). A few small issues with poor edit/spell checking gives the reader ‘accent’ rather than ‘assent’, ‘sligh’ rather than ‘sly’ and other grammatical issues.

Nevertheless, a fun lightweight read, which I imagine to be in the realm of 'cosy mysteries' which I've not read previously.

This is my first Avery Daniels book, an offering from Voracious Readers. Although this is book number 4 in the Resort to Murder series, I did not find that a hindrance. This is escapism and enjoyment, which delights me as the reader.

Julienne works for a company that owns resorts and as part of that job, travels to the various resorts to train staff. Her first visit to New Mexico takes her to the newest acquisition, Enchantment Canyon Resort. She and her boyfriend Mason check in and as you'd expect, soon there's a murder to solve. Having helped in other cases, her boss insists she help solve the crime. So she has the task of training the staff, asking questions and dealing with Mason's ex-girlfriend who turns up unexpectedly.

An entertaining read, especially during this current public health unpleasantness. I'm inspired to start with Resort to Murder #1.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Welcome to New Mexico with Julienne. She travels there in order to train the employees of a posh resort on her companies software. It should have been a straight forward assignment but then a man grabs her ankle as he is dying thanks to an arrow in his chest hence the title. She doesn't really want to get involved but the resort owner insists. He was a high profile businessman whose gruff manner mad a lot more enemies then friends making the suspect pool quite large to begin with. Following Julianne we get acquainted with the town making it seem like we visited as well. Add in well rounded characters mixed with clues to get a mystery you won't be able to put down as it keeps your attention from start to finish. Makes for a great read for cozy fans. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Arrowed is a fun mystery to read. I loved Julienne and each of the side characters. They came to life for me, as they were all developed very well. The motivations were clear, and I ended up sympathizing with the perpetrator of the crime.

I wished Julienne had a bit more confidence in her looks and her mystery solving abilities, as there were quite a few pages where I wanted to shake her and tell her to stop putting herself down. Mason also seemed like a superfluous character. He and Julienne seemed to have little chemistry, with great dates and kisses but little passion.

Overall interesting mystery read. I received this book for free, and I am voluntarily writing this review.

Julienne is under fire from several directions, her boss, her boyfriend, her boyfriend's old girlfriend, staff; you name it, it's happening to Julienne. The series is very good, the descriptions are almost life-like, you feel like you're right there. Also the mysteries are good, there are several options and you have to work your way thru all of them to find the murderer. I enjoy that so much more than if you only one or two suspects. Overall, this book is just as good as the first one and in series, that's hard to find sometimes!

A big thank you to NetGalley and Blazing Sword Publishing Ltd for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This book is part of a series. But it reads well as a stand alone. Although I did not quite understand the relationship between Mason and Julienne. The book is full of intrigue...i got caught up in the mystery. I thought Julienne's boss was not helpful. Its a good story, with the ending a bit unexpected. I enjoyed it and would read others. I think most cozy mystery readers would enjoy. 3.5 stars.

A good story, marvelous descriptions, and well-written characters make this book hard to put down. I've read this author's books before and this book keeps her at the top of my 'must-read author' list. Taking place at a resort in New Mexico, this murder mystery will keep you guessing till the end. Although this book is the most recent in a series, it does just fine as a stand-alone, but, you will undoubtedly want to go back and read the rest. Quick-paced and enjoyable, you won't be sorry you took a shot on this! (pun intended)!

The mystery itself was fine though I thought it was blinding obvious whodunnit. I wasn’t a fan of the writing - I really don’t need a full description of every single meal. This is a ridiculously cute and fun mystery cozy to read. Julianne is currently in new mexico training staff to use new software. Then a man grabs her ankle after being shot with an arrow. He tells her he has been cursed. The characters are like the girl and boy next door. When I read this series, it makes me feel good. It is such a light hearted and clever mystery that you feel like you have to solve the crime first. It is definitely a worthwhile read.

Review through Voracious Readers Only

A fun mystery which was a quick enjoyable read. Julienne is a delightful character who just seems to find herself involved with bodies wherever she goes and seems to end up solving things which is a familiar storyline. However the mystery itself was new and exciting. The characters throughout were well described and relatable and the added storyline with Tiffany added a wee extra twist. I look forward to reading more by Avery Daniels. A fun adventure!
