“I am pregnant, good sir!” she exclaimed. “If the gentleman has any children of his own, I implore him to remember that child and let me go. I will be his slave and serve him as long as he wishes. Please, young sir, please let me go!”Cândido pursues the women and eventually manages to capture her. Even though she begs for freedom and tells him that she ran away due to her pregnancy (because she doesn't want her child to become a slave), Cândido shows no mercy and hands her over to the slave owner in exchange for payment, with which he'll be able to support his wife and son (that he won't have to give up now). Due to the stress of the hunt and out of exhaustion and terror, the enslaved woman actually miscarriages and loses her own child.
