Last Redemption

Rate this book
Will Rick Cahill survive an insidious disease long enough to see his first-born child—or will sadistic killers murder him first?

Rick Cahill is finally living a settled, happy life. His fiancée, Leah Landingham, is pregnant with their first child and he is doing PI work that pays well and keeps him out of danger.

Then a doctor gives him the bad news about the headaches he's been suffering—CTE, the pro football disease that leads to senility and early death—a secret he keeps from Leah and his best friend Moira MacFarlane. He now just wants to live long enough to be a capable father to his child in the little time he has left.

When Moira asks him to monitor her son, Luke—who's broken a restraining order to stay away from his girlfriend—a simple surveillance explodes into greed, deceit, and murder. Luke goes missing, and Rick's dogged determination compels him to follow clues that lead to the exploration of high finance and DNA cancer research.

Ultimately, Rick is forced to battle sadistic killers as he tries to find Luke and stay alive long enough to be a capable father to his child.

Another great read by a master of suspense. If you haven't tried Matt Coyle you're missing the boat. No kidding, for my money this one is an Edgar contender.

Well I’m guessing this will be the last Rick Cahill book and the title might be a clue. Rick is a former police officer, now PI, in San Diego. He is typical of the old school, hard boiled detective. His partner, Leah, is pregnant and they are both pretty excited as neither had thought they would ever have children. So Rick is now working the lucrative corporate background checks which he can do from his home office and the work is risk free. Until he gets a call from his best friend, Moria McFarlane, another PI. Her 24 year old son Luke has had a temporary restraining order placed against him by his girlfriend, Gabriela (Gabby) Dates. Moria wants Rick to surveil Luke to ensure he doesn’t breach his TRO. Easy work - right? Wrong!

Rick doesn’t need to follow Luke, just ensure he doesn’t approach Gabby. But as he is watching Gabby’s place Luke turns up. Interestingly he goes into the apartment opposite Gabby’s. Hmmm. And a different man visits Gabby. Later, Luke leaves the stranger’s apartment and Rick follows expecting him to go home but instead he detours to the place he works, ConnectTech, a software development firm. Rick’s curiosity is piqued. I won’t go into all the details as it is quite complex. But by Monday morning Luke’s boss is found murdered in his office and Luke is missing.

Moria implores Rick to find her son but she won’t contemplate that he did anything wrong even though it’s not looking good. Rick does what he does best, rubbing people up the wrong way and prising answers out of them. Rick follows the trail through Gabby’s workplace Sequence Corp which is working on a genetic screening test for cancer which could be a game changer. He finds out who the woman is who has an apartment opposite Gabby. He talks to Luke’s friends at work and from his college days and he calls in a favour from an investment guru who owes him one. The picture that starts to emerge is very concerning!

Big pharma is very influential and lucrative, there are billions of dollars at stake. Luke is still in hiding but Rick is now concerned for his safety. The pacing was superb, the suspense built up throughout the book and the ending was climactic. It was great to see Rick’s softer side. He was so looking forward to a chance at redemption with Leah and his child to be but he also owed Moria big time so he stuck with the case, hoping that he would come out the other side unscathed. As I said, I’m guessing this is the last book and it’s a good one to out on. I haven’t read the whole series but I’ve read a few and can confidently say that Matt Coyle is an excellent writer. I look forward to seeing what he comes up with next. Many thanks to Netgalley and Oceanview Publishing for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly. 4.5 stars rounded down.

Life in transition, friend in trouble, danger around every corner

“Last Redemption” is part of the “Rick Cahill” series. This book continues from previous books, and the best experience is for regular readers of the series, but information is included as part of the narrative to help new readers see the entire picture and grasp the implications of past actions and events. Rick Cahill is a complex person with a complicated past that haunts him every day; it is a constant reminder of the ebbing tide of his time on earth. He wants to become a different person, a better person, but he has a lot of baggage; change is hard when people are trying to kill him.

The story is told in Rick’s first-person narrative. He is damaged both mentally and physically by the events of his life. He talks to himself and to readers, sharing everything from his perspective, the joys and pains, the good, bad, and the in-between. Rick is naturally sarcastic, abrasive even, and follows his own instincts, suppositions, and theories. However, when he is working a case he is focused, purposeful, and methodical because even the smallest detail might be valuable later.

The narrative starts sometime after the previous book, and Rick is now doing background checks for corporations, having abandoned the lifestyle that caused so much physical and mental torment. That past comes screaming back when his best friend’s son goes missing; Rick’s loyalty and friendship compel him to find the young man. People hide secrets from the rest of the world, and the pieces of the case are as confusing as pieces of a jigsaw puzzle without a box that shows the picture. The pursuit leads to some complicated connections with DNA cancer testing, the manipulation of a private company’s value, and, oh yes, a murder or two.

Coyle’s attention to details of every sort, in every place, make the story relevant, relatable, and realistic, from the sun burning off the marine layer in San Diego to the Vibram-soled Gall duty boots. I received a review copy of “Last Redemption” from Matt Coyle and Oceanview Publishing. The title “Last Redemption” hints to readers that perhaps Rick may finally find some peace, some acceptance of his situation … or not.

One-Liner: Steady-paced thriller with corporate and Pharma dealings

Rick Cahill is leading a settled life after pretty much giving up on dangerous detective pursuits. His fiancée, Leah, is pregnant with their child, and Rick is more than delighted by the news. However, his health seems to be a concern, as the headaches suggest a grave brain-related disease. Rick just wants to stay alive long enough to see his child and maybe spend some quality time with the baby.

When Moria, his dear friend, and investigative partner, calls for help, Rick knows he’ll do anything for her. She’s been through thick and thin by his side, and it’s time to help her. Moria’s son Luke seems to have broken a restraining order, and she wants to know what Luke is up to.

Rick finds the request simple enough. However, the surveillance and Luke’s subsequent disappearance, followed by deaths in the past and present complicate the case. Rick is now deep into the dealings of the corporate and Pharma world. With billions of dollars at stake, no life is safe. It’s up to Rick to find the truth and keep Luke alive (if he isn’t already dead). Of course, it feels as if Rick’s time has become rather limited on the earth.

Will Rick manage to expose the dark dealings and stay alive long enough to see his child?

Last Redemption is the eighth book in the series and can be read as a standalone. It starts a little slow but soon picks up the pace and keeps the story going. There’s a mystery, thrill, suspense, intrigue, danger, and action.

Even though this is my first book, I had no trouble understanding the relationship between the characters. There are enough snippets to provide a backstory when necessary. Rick is a rugged PI who goes more by instinct than by the book (PIs can’t solve cases if they go by the book). That puts him in danger more than once, but it goes with the job. He’s extra worried this time because of the ticking clock and a miracle child on the way.

The plot is revealed one step at a time through different characters and developments. I enjoyed how the whole thing was structured to arrive at the final conclusion. The culprit wasn’t hard to guess. In fact, we pretty much know who it is halfway through. The rest of it is to uncover the what, how, when, why and bring everything together.

There were a couple of incidents that made me wonder why Rick didn’t think of those on his own. He is an experienced PI, after all. But I let go because his character was clearly not at his best in this book. He was worried about the brain damage, and that most likely affected his instincts.

There’s an epilogue of sorts, which ties up the loose ends (almost). The book ends in such a way that there may or may not be a continuation. It leaves the reader satisfied and gives the author a chance to decide what to do with the series.

The story reminded me of the current scenario where a section of the Indian media and opposition has been lobbying for Pfizer to be brought when our Indian vaccines are already effective. The misinformation doesn't seem to stop when money is involved.

To sum up, Last Redemption is a steady-paced thriller with a capable PI taking control of the case. I’m going to check out the previous books in the series and start from the first.

Thank you, NetGalley and Oceanview Publishing, for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Last Redemption, the eighth book in Coyle's Rick Cahill private eye series set in modern-day La Jolla, California, finds Cahill a bit out of sorts suffering from head injuries and, finally doing steady corporate work. Leah is finishing up her work in Montecito with the baby on her way before they settle down to blissful married life. But, it wouldn't be much of a story if Cahill merely settled down to a boring humdrum life. The solution here is for Cahill's private eye buddy Moira to ask Cahill to monitor her son who now has a restraining order against him from his ex girlfriend and has disappeared from the face of the earth. This leads into a sordid tale that demonstrates just how much La Jolla and northern San Diego County have become another Silicon Valley, but focused on medical high-tech and just how much Silicon Valley scandals have come south. This is an exciting private eye tale that has Cahill operating on his own and by his own set of rules until the climatic finish.

Rick Cahill is taking his last case as a private detective, he decided to help Moira, a close friend. But, after the night stake-out, he can see that it is not going to be an easy case. The author is telling us about the miracle child that Rick and his bride to be are having as if we could forget.

My guess is that every avid reader has a series (or two, or three) that never fails to be a sure bet for an entertaining, comforting go-to. I know I do, and this one isn't all that far from the top of my favorites list. This entry - the eighth - certainly doesn't disappoint; in fact, it just may have moved the series up a notch or two.

At the outset, Rick's life is something of a roller coaster; happily, he's going to be a father as his fiancee, interior designer Leah Landingham, is in the early stages of pregnancy. Not so happily, he's been diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, for which the prognosis is early death (and meantime, he's experiencing brief lapses in memory). He plans to tell Leah, and his sometime P.I. partner and best friend, Moira MacFarlane, but the time just never seems right.

He's also trying to get comfortable working behind a desk rather than in the field, where danger lurks at any given moment (and has resulted in injuries that no doubt contributed to his brain condition). That switch in focus, he says, he owes to Leah - and his intense desire to become a first-time dad. His resolve gets set aside, however, when Moira calls to say her son Luke is missing - not long after his girlfriend Gabrielle took out a Temporary Restraining Order against him. Moira, needless to say, is frantic with worry, although she refuses to believe that her son did anything to warrant the TRO, much less anything worse.

But spotting Luke at Gabrielle's condo building - but going into an adjacent unit - hints at a different story that spirals into a scenario immediately calling to my mind the currently (as I write this) in-the-news trial of Elizabeth Holmes, founder of the much-hyped but ill-fated blood testing firm Theranos. In any event, it's a plot that ultimately puts Rick in serious danger almost from the git-go (and for those who might care, some of what happens gets a little cringe-worthy in spots).

The ending wraps things up nicely, with one exception that no doubt will play a role in the next installment - to which, needless to say, I'm looking forward. Meantime, thanks once again to the publisher, via NetGalley, for allowing me to enjoy a pre-release copy of this one. Great job!

Are we allowed to give out 10 stars? No? Well, this book was jipped. Last Redemption is a wild ride. Not only is it an exceptional thriller, the writing style is so well done you cant help but drool over each flip of the page.

I had no idea when I requested Last Redemption that it was a part of a series. Once I was made aware I went back and started at the very beginning and I am so glad I did. Each book can be read as a stand alone, however, with the character development and characters that reappear throughout the series, I would recommend reading them in order. Plus they are all incredible, so why not?

The entire series is so well narrated. There is so much complexity. Each novel is character driven and feels just so real!

I highly recommend this series and Last Redemption to all detective/murder mystery lovers.

The Rick Cahill series never disappoints. Rick and crew are wonderful characters and the stories are always clever and well-plotted. LAST REDEMPTION is exactly that. In this outing, Rick is facing a potential deadly health issue, awaiting the birth of his first child with fiancee Leah, and biding his time in a safe line of PI work. No snooping or following or confronting but rather chasing facts on the computer. All is good. But when friend and colleague Moira asks him the check out her son Rick who she feels might be violating a restraining order issued by his girlfriend. A violation that could land him behind bars. So, Rick hits the streets, a place he loves to work. But this simple surveillance quickly turns dark and Rick confronts a cadre of killers that threaten all he holds dear. You won’t be able to put this fast-paced thriller down.

Rick Cahill is back, and the poor guy can't catch a break.

At least here - at least at the beginning -he's safely ensconced behind a desk, running employment checks for companies and pulling in a regular income from it. He's also been diagnosed with CTE (chronic, traumatic encephalopathy, AKA head trauma from football) and is experiencing brain fog and missing time, something he has not told wife Leah, who is carrying their first child. He still feels the itch of being in the field, though, running down a case.

So when Moira, his best friend, wants Rick to tail her son to make sure he isn't violating a restraining order, he doesn't think twice. Moira is his friend, after all, and tailing someone without interacting with them seems safe enough.

It never is, though.

Rick trails the son and finds out he's visiting an apartment not just in the same complex in which his girlfriend lives, but directly across from it. What is going on here? When Rick goes to speak to the girlfriend, he finds her dead - murdered in her apartment. When the son's boss also ends up dead, Rick has to decide whether to tell law enforcement that he tailed the young man to his place of employment during the time stated as the time of death. Moira's son? Vanished. And the primary suspect in both murders.

The case takes a giant leap here into the investigation, and it is wild, involving a consulting company that has top programmers in its stable, a secret project, competing firms, corporate espionage, and a new technology for screening DNA in search of various conditions so the problematic genes can be "switched off". That reminded me of this book about Theranos and their "one drop" wonder machine that never worked.

The stakes get higher, and more dangerous, especially for Rick and his unpredictable time losses. Moira finds out by accident that he's been seeing a neurologist, and insists he tell Leah, or she will. He promises to do so, then promptly breaks that promise when Leah goes out of town for a big design job. He offers excuses to Moira, but knows he must do it, because Moira is a woman of her word.

The last 150 pages are so are terrific: action packed, danger, loose threads pulled together, and an entirely satisfying ending.

Five out of five stars.

I have read and enjoyed every Rick Cahill novel and this one was extra special as Rick deals not only with his profession as a private investigator, but his health and his questionable future. Rick is asked to locate the missing son of one of his best friends. He doesn’t have a lot of “best friends”, so this is important to him. When the son’s name is mentioned in regards to the recent computer research he completed, he becomes a possible suspect in a murder. Others are looking for the young man and they may not have his best interests at heart. Meanwhile, Rick’s companion is expecting their child which adds a new purpose to his life. As he investigates and makes some dangerous people very angry, will he survive to see his child born? Rick is not your “polished” private eye who has all of the technology and contacts, but what he does have is perseverance as step by step he finds justice for the victims. If you like your P.I.s hardboiled but with a contemporary sensibility, don't miss this series. Rick Cahill has settled into doing corporate work and doing searches on a computer. It's safer and with a baby on the way and a fresh diagnosis of CTE, that the way he'll roll. But when his best friend and PI asks him to help find her son, all hell breaks loose and safer may not be possible. To notch plotting and sharp characterizations. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

This one gets a forward-leaning 3.5 stars.
First of all, the writing is solid. The pacing of the plot and character development are both really well done, so the story moves fluidly while keeping you turning the pages following a case that keeps surprising you.
My one complaint is that it gets a bit too dark sometimes. It feels a bit like Coyle is kind of mad at his character and is making him suffer just for jollies. As much as I wanted to know what happened next in the story, I sometimes had to stop just because I had to take a step away from the torturous violence. This is something that might just be a negative for me, but I just could not keep going.
Finally, don't let the fact that this is the 8th book in the series keep you from jumping on. There are minor details that I suspect would have hit harder knowing the backstory, but I never felt like I was lost because Coyle gives you all the information you need right in the story.

Happy thanks to NetGalley and Oceanview Publishing for the early read!

A Riveting Thriller

The novel starts with Rick Cahill waking up to all the physical problems that he has earned with his life of violence to date. His neurologist believes he is suffering from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. He has terrible headaches and at times, he seems shuts down in what he calls a fugue state that seems to becoming worse. His vision has improved to 20/200 after being completely blind. He receives a call from Moira MacFarlane with whom he often collaborates. She can’t contact her 24-year-old son. He recently was served with a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO), and she fears that he is breaking it. Moira wants Rick to find her son before he does something stupid. Rick stakes out Luke’s girlfriend who obtained the TRO, and Luke shows up but goes to a neighbor’s residence. Later, Luke leaves and goes to his workplace late Saturday night. Rick sees Luke enter the building where he works, sees him in the only lighted window, and then Rick leaves. Monday morning, his boss is found murdered in his office. At this point, Luke really disappears. The main storyline launches itself from this start.

The main storyline quickly captured my attention by what should be a relatively simple task becomes complicated by the police involvement, with whom Rick as a very poor relationship, and Moira becomes quite introspective as she becomes more protective of her son that helping finding him. The flow alternates between Rick’s action of chasing down leads and then discussing them with Moira to determine what to do next. There were many twists, turns and misdirections that maintained my interest all the way to the end. The heighten tension throughout the story also assisted keeping my attention. This story has a strong emotional side that was the third in this trifecta of this novel’s main storyline that ensured that my attention did not wonder.

The B-storyline was extensive for both Rick and Moira. Two threads involving Rick’s accommodation to his physical limitations and still maintain his code of justice, and with Leah, Rick’s pregnant girlfriend, has given an unexpected possibility that Rick never thought that he would have. Both of these threads greatly affect his ability to take the actions he wants to take. The voice of this novel is essentially only Rick and all of these threads are from his thoughts. The other thread was Moira’s changing from an aggressive private investigator into a paralyzed mother with a son in trouble for whom she doesn’t seem to be able to help.

There are not any intimate scenes. There is a definite use of vulgar, rude and disrespectful language at a level that was not at a red flag level for me. Violence was described both in the less edgy after the fact, but some, especially involving Rick, is described as it occurs. These three aspects combined, did not raise any issues with me, but let the reader beware.

This is the eighth novel in the series. I have read three previous novels, and this one is the best that I have read so far. After reading the previous novel, I did not expect that there could be a better novel, but was I ever wrong. Based upon the four novels that I read, I purchased the remaining four novel in the series. I did not find any aspects in this novel that required reading the other novels first, so this can be your first novel in the series. I was quite happy with the ending and strongly recommending this novel if you enjoy private investigator thrillers. Several times I could not stop reading well past midnight. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel and rate this novel with five stars.

I received a free e-book version of this novel through NetGalley from Oceanview Publishing. My review is based only by my own reading experience of this book. I wish to thank Oceanview Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this novel early.

Last Redemption by Matt Coyle is a very highly recommended classic PI novel and the 8th in the Rick Cahill.

Rick Cahill, the hard boiled PI from La Jolla, CA, finally has his life heading toward a quiet, satisfying life. He and his fiancée, Leah Landingham are thrilled that she is pregnant with their first child and he is doing background checks for companies rather than field work, which pays well and keeps him out of danger. When he is then informed that he his current headaches are due to CTE, he keeps it a secret for the time being. It still seems like a safe job when his best friend, PI Moira MacFarlane, asks him to watch her son, Luke, from a distance to make sure he doesn't violate a restraining order against him. But this very simple surveillance job changes rapidly when Luke disappears, his boss is found murdered, and the trail of information is becomes increasingly complicated very quickly.

Last Redemption is an excellent PI novel. The writing is exceptional, the case is compelling and complicated, and the danger increases with every page. The plot moves at a fast pace and the action picks up along with the tension. Rick ends up putting his safety at risk again as the danger increases as each new piece of information is questioned and uncovered. Once you start reading Last Redemption it will be hard to put it down.

Rick Cahill is a great character and with each novel he continues to experience more growth and advancement as an individual. The great news is that you can appreciate this novel without reading previous books in the series, but once you do read it, you will want to read the other books in the series. If you enjoy hard boiled PI novel, then you have to start reading Matt Coy's Rick Cahill novels.

This is another fabulous novel by Matt Coyle. I’ve really enjoyed this series, Rick is such a great character. It was easy to lose myself between the pages for many enjoyable hours. It’s very well written, and I quite like how tense the plot is.
Leah thought Rick was finally safe doing his job from home sitting in front of his computer, instead of working out in the field, where he tended to put his life on the line. Leah had the right to ask Rick to make this compromise after she became pregnant and upended her life to come and live with him. Rick was very good at his job, however he somehow found himself in some very dangerous situations. When his best friend Moira asked him to carry out surveillance on her son who had an AVO out on him from his ex-girlfriend. Should be a walk in the park for Rick. Should have been.
Hands down, this is a great story and well worth a read. 5/5 Star Rating.

Another taut story in the Rick Cahill series. Initially, I didn't think this was up to par as the other ones, but when I just had about 100 pages left, I quickly changed my mind and was really into the story line. Interesting to see what #9 will involve and whether Cahill mellows out a bit.

If you’re in the mood for a good book revolving around a likable private investigator, a missing person, greedy rich people and high-tech DNA science, look no further. This is a great read, one that kept my interest throughout. In addition to a thriller-type plot with lots of twists, I enjoyed Coyle’s writing style and his vivid descriptions. I really felt for Cahill, whose partner is expecting their first child (an unexpected miracle for them) but who has recently been given a tentative diagnosis of CTE (the brain injury so common to football players). He is desperate to stay alive and healthy to meet and raise his child. He’s been mostly doing corporate background checks lately, which is keeping him safe and provides steady income, but his best friend and fellow PI, Moira, needs his help finding her 24-year-old son, and so he finds himself back to doing more dangerous stuff.

This is the 8th book in the Rick Cahill series but the first one I’ve read. The fact that I was not at all confused is a tribute to the writer; so often in series it’s hard to jump in in the middle instead of starting with book one. I’m sure I’d have enjoyed it even more if I had read the earlier books, but it was easy to read this as a standalone. I was intrigued enough with Cahill’s backstory that I may well check out some of the earlier books when I have a moment.

Judging by the title, you may think this was intended to be the final book in the series but it seems that there’s at least one more Cahill book in the works.

Thank you to NetGalley and Oceanview Publishing for the opportunity to read an advance readers copy of this book, although I’m a bit late to it. All opinions are my own.

This is the eighth book in a series featuring a hard-nosed private detective named Rick Cahill. He’s a likable character as the story is told from his point of view, and you’re privy to his every thought and feeling. Cahill is conflicted. He really wants to help his best friend find her missing son, but at the same time he’s concerned about his own health and is looking forward to fatherhood. The story moves right along and leaves you guessing as it moves to its nail biting conclusion. 3.75 stars

Shot in the face and temporarily blinded (in 2020’s BLIND VIGIL), years as a Golden Gloves boxer, and multiple concussions by thug-beatings about the head have left Raymond Chandler’s contemporary Philip Marlowe-reincarnate Rick Cahill with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and debilitating fugues. And possibly a future of dementia and early death. Could things get any worse?

Yes, but Rick rises from despair. Like the mythological phoenix, he’s flying high. The San Diego PI is engaged to Leah Landingham (introduced in 2019’s LOST TOMORROWS), and they’re expecting a child. Vision issues led him to computerized investigations for corporations, saving a venture capitalist millions of dollars. He now has wealthy clients and a reputation for ferreting dubious start-up companies seeking financial backing. Rick earns enough to provide for his family, even after he’s gone. Things couldn’t get any better.

Still, Rick misses traditional detective work. He welcomes the opportunity to surveil fellow PI Moira MacFarlane’s son, Luke, a computer wizard at age 24. “Moira was my best friend, but we didn’t exactly socialize…our strange relationship bound by hardship.” Rick witnesses Luke violate a restraining order regarding former gal-pal Gabriela and tails him to his employer’s office at night. The next day, Rick learns that the CEO had been murdered and Luke is on the lam. “Luke MacFarlane was a fuse waiting to be lit.”

What seems to be a simple assignment leads Rick into a quagmire of the uber-wealthy, who can make people disappear --- including Rick. One duplicitous character has ties to a member of Congress. Another aspect involves cancer research that may detect future probability of the disease, by a company on the verge of being acquired by Big Pharma.

As an investigator, Rick succeeds by gathering tidbits of seemingly unrelated information, the way that past gumshoes prevailed. “All I had was a jumble of jigsaw pieces without a box to show the big picture.” (Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone had a stack of index cards.)

Noir crime fans will celebrate Rick’s triumph over thugs in this contemporary hard-boiled PI masterpiece. LAST REDEMPTION catapults Rick Cahill into the Private Eye Hall of Fame and deserves more stars than has the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The question begs: Which actor would portray Rick in a film adaptation of Coyle’s award-winning series?

Comparison to Raymond Chandler goes beyond Rick Cahill sharing initials. Matt Coyle earne the Anthony Award for Best First Novel (YESTERDAY’S ECHO) and a score of other literary awards for his intense Cahill crime novels. Citing the late, great H. Terrell Griffin in 2015’s CHASING JUSTICE, “It just doesn’t get any better than this.” Although each book of the series can be enjoyed as a stand-alone, readers new to Coyle’s craft should consider a chronological read to understand each character’s motivation.

This is the eighth Rick Cahill mystery and the first that I have read.

After years as a football player, cop, and private investigator, Rick has been knocked around a lot. He has recently been diagnosed with CTE - Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, the football player's disease. His prognosis is for dementia and early death.

He has recently fallen in love with Leah and the two are expecting a child. It is a miracle for both of them since they are in their early 40s. Rick finally has a chance to focus on his future. He hasn't told Leah about his diagnosis yet since he found out just after she became pregnant. She'd had a series of miscarriages and he didn't want to trigger another one with his news.

Ha e has switched his job to doing mostly background checks for corporate customers which should protect his damaged brain. Then he gets a call from his best friend and fellow investigator Moira who asks him to check on her son Luke. She's afraid that he is violating a restraining order that his ex-girlfriend placed on him.

Rick goes to check on the girlfriend's place and sees Luke visit the house next door. He follows Luke to his employers and then to his home. The next day he learns that Luke's boss has been murdered and Luke has disappeared.

Rick wants to turn things over to the cops, but Moira is afraid for her son. The two continue investigating and soon learn that the case has many complications having to do with DNA cancer testing and manipulating a company's value. And murders of those who might get in the way of a really, really big payoff.

Rick was an interesting character. It was easy to see that he had a history as a lone wolf investigator who wasn't afraid to put himself into danger for his clients. It was also easy to see that he really loved Leah and his unborn child and wanted to do what he had to to have a future with them.

The mystery was nicely twisty and filled with action with some violence. Fans of the series will enjoy this latest episode. It was also an intriguing story for someone, like me, who is meeting these characters for the first time.

Rick's got a lot to look forward to- his fiance Leah is pregnant- even though he's struggling with CTE and being desk bound. Then his old friend Moira calls with a problem. Her son Luke has been accused of stalking his ex-girlfriend Gabby and she needs him to follow Luke. Sounds easy but it's not. A simple surveillance leads him into a morass of corporate greed, conspiracy and, wait for it, murder. Luke knows something someone doesn't want others to know and he's hiding for a good reason. Some of this plot (evil pharma) might seem familiar but Coyle's characters are unique and they shine. This will be fine as a standalone but fans of the hard boiled should consider reading at least of a few of the earlier books to appreciate some of the nuance and how Rick and Leah got to where they are now. No spoilers but know that the title is a clue. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. A very good read - I'm looking forward to whatever Coyle's writing next.

I received an ARC through "NetGalley" read now program.

This story is about Rick's assistance in locating the son of Moira, a friend, who has gone missing. As the story progresses and as Rick gets closure to the truth, things start to get out of hand. At the same time this is going on, Rick is trying to deal with CTE, a football injury, which has him worried about his health and how it will impact his future life.

To discover how successful Rick was in his search and why has so much concern with regard to his health, then you need to read this book.

Rick Cahill has a new found fan in me. First time reading this series and I can’t wait to read more books from this author. If all the bad things in the world were to happen to one guy, Rick is the man for the job. This character can’t catch a break and to top it off his personal life is also in some type of turmoil plus his health is in serious trouble. Fast paced, action ridden, keeping you in the edge of your seat type of book, a must read. The story and the character will keep you entertained and invested in finding out who did it.

Love a good who-dunit book. This is right up there with Connelly's Harry Bosch and Balducci's Amos Decker. All three are tenacious truth seekers with enough personal flaws to overcome to make them human.

You know or suspect right along with Cahill who the bad guys are but it's the slow build of pieces being put together that makes it work.

Characterization of Cahill is solid and I felt his suffering... every hit he took knowing it would only make it worse.

Woohoo... I have a new series to read and enjoy. Thank you, Matt Coyle!

Great to have Rick back in this ongoing series. Trying to settle down is harder than he thinks, and he’s soon back going full speed as he tries to help Moira.whose son has gotten into quite a mess. I received an advanced digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher and voluntarily provided an honest review.
