Leveling Up: How To Master The Game of Life

Rate this book
What happens when you approach the real world like a video game? You start winning—at life.

In this radical new perspective on achieving success, marketing leader and eSports player Eric Siu outlines 15 personal power-ups that will help you unlock your passion and level up your life.

You’ll follow the same steps that Siu used to transform himself from academic and social failure to wildly successful marketing entrepreneur and podcaster—by applying his mindset as a competitive eSports gamer to real-life situations. Siu didn’t stop playing video games; he just started gaming in his real life, setting himself quests, goals, and rewards at each level. Now, he’s passing the torch to you.

In Leveling Up , Siu challenges you to conquer the real world by accumulating 15 personal power-ups that will help you focus on your passion and develop it into a winning career. Every chapter brings insights and stories, advice from others who have succeeded, and a quest that you must undertake. Master all 15 levels, and you’ll even unlock a special bonus to help you build the life of your dreams.

I heard about this one on an episode of the Pomp Podcast and pre-ordered it because of how much I enjoyed that episode. At a high level, this one’s a self-help book that draws parallels between leveling up in video games and improving one’s life.

In video games, as in life, there are power-ups and level-ups, Siu explains. These are your faster cars, advanced levels of education, improved skills, better relationships, etc. In order to find these things, you must first set off on a mission, much like you would in a video game.

Over the course of that journey, you’ll face obstacles and battles yet eventually overcome them with the help of your team, purpose, and the various skills and power-ups you've collected along the way. Siu’s video-game-to-life metaphor is a constant throughout this one, but it’s definitely not overdone. It’s actually quite effective and refreshing.

While some of the book's self-help content is slightly introductory, it’s the application and design here that really help this one shine. I bought this book on my Kindle, and the design / layout of it is the best I’ve ever seen on an eReader. That design made for a really enjoyable reading experience.

So, if you're into personal development, video games, or great print design, I think you’ll certainly enjoy this one as well.

The hardcover version is extremely well done. This is a book I'll keep on my shelf for inspiration. The cover is amazing and there are tons of graphics and illustrations inside. I'm so intrigued by the concept of leveling up your life like you would "unlock" levels in a video game. Fantastic concept that I'm excited to apply to my life. The concepts apply to business, academic, and personal life. Time to level up!

If you are a gamer then this book will give you better visualizations of your work or in general you'll love this one.
