Bridgertons #7-8

Bridgerton Collection Volume 3

Rate this book
An enchanting collection containing books seven and eight of #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn’s beloved Regency-set Bridgerton novels, now a series created by Shondaland for Netflix —It’s in His Kiss and On the Way to the Wedding—as well as the first book in her Bridgerton Prequel series, Because of Miss Bridgerton.

It’s in His Kiss

Gareth St. Clair’s ignoble father is determined to ruin his inheritance. Gareth’s sole bequest is an old family diary, which may hold the key to his future. The problem is it’s written in Italian. Hyacinth Bridgerton has offered to translate. She’s fiendishly smart, devilishly outspoken, and according to Gareth, best in small doses. But there’s something equally charming and vexing about her that draws him in. As they delve into the mysterious text, these two might discover that the answers they seek lie in each other . . . and that there is nothing as simple—or as complicated—as a single, perfect kiss.

On the Way to the Wedding

Gregory Bridgerton believes he has found his dream woman. Unfortunately, the ravishing Miss Hermione Watson is in love with another. Her best friend, the ever-practical Lady Lucinda Abernathy, wants to save Hermione from a disastrous alliance, and offers to help Gregory win her heart. In the process, Lucy falls in love—with Gregory! But she is already engaged, and her uncle is not inclined to let her out of the betrothal. Now, on the way to the wedding, Gregory must risk everything to ensure that when it comes time to kiss the bride, he is the only man standing at the altar…

Because of Miss Bridgerton

Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. As a child, tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate. George may be the heir to the earldom, but he’s arrogant, annoying, and she’s certain he detests her. She can’t stand the sight of him either. But when Billie and George are quite literally thrown together, sparks begin to fly. They just might discover that the one person they can’t abide is the one person they can’t live without...

#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and and if you watch reruns of the game show The Weakest Link you might just catch her winning the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code.

A graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America’s Hall of Fame. Her books have been translated into 32 languages, and she lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.

The Bridgertons, her popular series of historical romance, is currently in production by Shondaland as a Netflix original series starring Julie Andrews, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rége-Jean Page.

****Lady Danbury took the book in her hands, glanced down, and positively beamed. “We haven’t read this one yet,” she said. She looked back up at Hyacinth. “I hope it’s just as bad as the rest.” “Oh, come now, Lady Danbury,” Hyacinth said, taking a seat next to her, “you shouldn’t call them bad.” “I didn’t say they weren’t entertaining,” the countess said, eagerly flipping through the pages.*****

This is it. This is the whole series.

Now this collection is by the far the best of the volumes!! Individually, I like Penelope's story the best, but these three books together outweigh Volume Two for me. All in all - can't go wrong with a Bridgerton book!

Book 7: ★★★★★ Hyacinth's story was absolutely the best one out of the series. I loved Hyacinth and the mystery aspect with the search for the hidden jewels.
Book 8: ★★★★ While I didn't enjoy it as much as Book 7, it was still much more enjoyable than I expected. The sudden suspense aspect of the story was shocking, and so far apart from any of the other books.
Prequel 1: ★★★★ I went into this not expecting to enjoy it like I have the original series, but Billie and her complete confidence in being her authentic self grew on me.

Hyacinth’s story was amazing! I always thought Quinn did Eloise dirty because she had so much development as a character to have a truly unique story. Hyacinth is somewhat similar, but I found her love story to be superb and actually gives her more credit as an independent young woman. Gregory’s story was okay...nothing super special about it. Did not read the prequel because I don’t want to start a new series yet.

Bridgertons

Very enjoyable. A family’s history of how it’s couple’s got together. Each one different. A tapestry woven very skillfully. Entertaining.

I only read books 7 and 8. I’m not interested in the prequel. Individual reviews of those two can be found on their book pages.

Obviously Hyacinth’s story was absolutely phenomenal. Gregory was a touch bland but the love interest was so kind and awkward.

4 ⭐️ for the overall volume

Probably the second best volume out of the three.

—————————

It’s in His Kiss

3 ⭐️

I’m a little underwhelmed. Idk if it’s just the fatigue of reading all the Bridgerton books back to back lol I feel like I’m not being romanced anymore since it’s repetitive. Regardless, I did enjoy scenes with Lady Danbury and Violet. I think I miss having interactions with the rest of the siblings. I loved seeing Gregory being a teasing brother to Hyacinth, but I wish we got another one with Colin. I was sad when he was mentioned but then Hyacinth just narrated what transpired when she went to ask Colin for help. What a missed opportunity to see them together since we haven’t really explored that relationship. Gareth as a leading man was almost okay, but him trapping Hyacinth was just so unnecessary, wrong, selfish. Like sure at the end they’re in love, but that’s just so out of character since Gareth had great respect for Hyacinth from the beginning. Regardless, the jewel heist was fun. Although how convenient that the only times they got caught were by Lord St. Clair. At the end, I liked how we got secrets revealed but also left out. I think that it was right for Gareth to reveal to Lord St. Clair who the real father was, but I also loved that Isabella the daughter ended up protecting her mother’s pride and fun by hiding the fact that she was the one to find the jewels first.

On the Way to the Wedding

4 ⭐️

Really enjoyed this book! I just wished we got more time with Gregory and Lucy. I feel like they weren’t given enough time together. It’s a shame because their chemistry was so enjoyable. Even in the epilogue, it’s Hyacinth’s voice that closes the story. I love Hyacinth, but it is Gregory’s time to shine! That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy seeing all the other Bridgertons. I love how they are just down to help each other in the name of love 😭😭 I wish I can see this being adapted into the show but I doubt 😭

Because of Miss Bridgerton

4 ⭐️

Great introduction to the Rokesby series. The roof sequence was just so funny. The “You’d have to marry me,” line reeled me in! At first I thought it was gonna be a love triangle with Andrew, but I’m glad that it was obvious for everyone who the perfect couple was. Although I love the yearning on both sides, George and Billie could’ve have avoided so much drama if they just communicated lol like as people who don’t lie, the two of them sure did play games. My favorite part, had me giggling, was when they declaring their love in front of Lady Manston AND Lord Arbuthnot lol

I liked some parts, others were not so great. The author has gotten much better and I really enjoyed her explorations in the last two Bridgerton books.

It's In His Kiss: Lady Dansbury is wonderful and the book that they are reading is wonderful. Loved it, until the epilogues. The timeline there just does not make sense!

On the Way to the Wedding: Finally! I assumed the altar trope was going to happen in one of the prior books. Here it is! Not really spoiling anything, it happens in the first chapter, it's just a mystery of whose wedding is being disrupted. As much as I rolled my eyes at the trope, I really enjoyed the rest of the book. This one has a healthy dose of mystery and I really liked it!

Because of Miss Bridgerton: Okay, the hymen trope had been bugging me, but now it's really annoying. If Billie is so very active, it's almost certain she broke hers while horseback riding or doing any of the many other activities she does. Also, why are all the guys not virgins and they all know to be so very gentle and to let the women know it might hurt AND they can feel the hymen breaking? So very unrealistic. Also not my kink, so the fact that it's unrealistic this time makes it just that more annoying. As for the rest of the story, I'm not a fan of the hated each other their whole lives and finally realized they loved each other trope either, so this one, while having some interesting characters and some good writing/scenes, really wasn't my thing. And another thing! I know she came back to this series after some time in part due to fan requests, but there were a couple of fan service callbacks that just did not fit here. The Mallet of Death and the Bridgerton Pall Mall viciousness were cheapened by putting them here too as though it were family tradition and not a thing that the younger generation did. Having the Modiste be Madame Delacroix and the Berbrookes be absent-minded comic relief also bugged me. Apparently I did not like this book that much!

I might not keep going with the prequels. At least this one had a bit too much fan service and calling back to what she had done in other books instead of writing a new book in the same universe. Some things that would have made sense, like meeting Lady Danbury, weren't there, while others that didn't make sense, like calling the black mallet the Mallet of Death, were. Ah well, I'll probably keep going since these are about my current speed!

Are these masterpieces? No
Are there POC? No
Are these books at all unique? No
Are these well written? Also No

This author is very clearly white and all her characters are white. Any description of non-european countries are incredibly racist and outdated. This is a historical romance so you may argue that it’s historically accurate but truly it didn’t need to be included because before being historical these are romance novels and those kinds of details have no affect on the story.

In addition there are many issues with consent throughout these books. Coercion, manipulation, and at times a complete lack of consent are present as part of tropes and/or plot lines. The historical context is used as an excuse to disregard some of the consent problems that should have been discussed or involved consequences with their inclusion. These scenes are almost romanticized and that is inexcusable. That being said, this volume has the least issues with consent compared to the previous novels with one of the books having no issues at all (from what i identified but I could be mistaken)

I will admit that DESPITE these things I did enjoy the books on a very surface level. They are very quick reads that you don’t need to think much about. Characters between books are not all that different and even if the over arching trope the book focuses on is different there are other plot lines and tropes that are repeated. The books were a lot of fun because I was binge reading this series while still having school work and other stressful events.

I have not seen the TV show, so I do not know all the changes made, but it sounds like many of the changes were positive from the books. If you are not a fan of reading and you are a fan of the show, these are probably not worth reading.

If you want to read these I suggest you check them out of the library if possible to avoid supporting this author — which I wish I had known ahead of time

Main Tropes:
It’s In His Kiss - Forced Proximity/Family Friends to Lovers
On the Way to the Wedding - Engaged to Someone Else
Because of Miss Bridgerton - Dislike to Lovers

I will add specific content warnings for each book later with some context.

oh my god. oh my god i finished all 8 books. i surely have finished 4-6 books series but never 8?! in such a short time too. although i took quite a while time when i was reading daphne's & anthony's stories but it was because their stories already made into a show and i kinda wish the books & series be mixed... anyway for rating of 2 books is 4 stars 🩷⭐️, in which:
hyacinth - 3.75
gregory - 4.75 (surprised, me too!!!)
gregory's story was second best for me after benedict's. i enjoyed it very much, but with benedict's i was hooked and i believed i spent the whole day just to read and didn't skip. while for gregory's i still put it aside for a bit. his story got bonus point because of the 2nd epilogue (surprise, surprise) AND IT MADE ME BAWLED MY EYES OFF. anything that made me cry - got a 5 stars or bonus point in this case. hyacinth's story was good too, and quite different than others. honestly gregory's book is such a good ending book, plus with him naming all of his children with his & lucy's siblings.. ugh i love them 😭 anyway the books are very different from the series in my opinion, the books heavily influenced with romance, well it was romance books after all, whereas the series have more drama than the books. it was shonda rhimes who produce it so it was obvious there'll be drama. honestly i was kinda scared for the series now seeing how i turned out enjoy the books this much. i wasn't expecting it at all lol. benedict's story literally boosted my curiosity to continue the series till the end without stopping for awhile anymore 🤣 also because i am that crazy gonna put my overall rating for the 8 books, which is 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!! it was a good reading experience of historical romance, surely i'll be reading more in the future. . .

(also i can not bear to read the prequel which is included i need some fresh air (re: contemporary romance or others) 😭😭😭)

This collection completes the original Bridgerton series, eight books for the eight Bridgerton siblings. Hyacinth and Gregory’s books, along with the second epilogues written years later, are included in this collection, as well as the first in the Rokesby prequel series. Here’s the rundown:

It’s in His Kiss 5 stars

My favorite of this collection, Hyacinth and Gareth’s book had a good sense of humor, a mystery to solve, lots of Lady Danbury, and the lovely Bridgerton family bringing another lonely soul into the family. I adored it.

On the Way to the Wedding 4 stars

A bit long for a book about a Bridgerton character I knew least from the other books, but I still liked Gregory and Lucy’s story, especially Gregory’s unwillingness to give up on her. Angst was a little too drawn out for my level of patience, but it was still a winner.

Because of Miss Bridgerton 4 stars

The enemies theme and Billie’s chumminess with Andrew felt a bit forced at the start, but I quickly warmed to these characters once the POVs started switching back and forth. George’s feeling of being an outsider were well done, and I could relate to Billie’s reputation of being such a good sport for teasing that people didn’t know when to stop. I loved that George picked up on that and stood up for her. This was a very small part of the book, but it stood out to me and made me love George all the more. This is a promising start to the prequel series, and I’ve already put the next one on hold from the library.

I have reviewed the first book, Hyacinth’s story in the stand alone book and do not plan to read the final book in this trilogy as it is not part of the original Bridgerton series. This rating and review is primarily for the second story, Gregory’s story.
This was a sweet story in which Gregory, the youngest Bridgerton brother is a true romantic and is hoping to find his love match soon. In walks Hermione Watson and he is Star struck. Desperate to win her over, he turns to Hermione’s best friend Lady Lucy Abernathy to assist in wooing her. Little does he know, Hermione is already in love with another and Lucy is beginning to develop feelings.
I enjoyed the plot twists in this story as Gregory and Lucy develop a friendship and I appreciate that Gregory was not afraid of love and the lengths he takes to fight for it with Lucy are admirable, albeit a little ridiculous at times. Overall, an enjoyable read, but became a little sappy and frustrating that Lucy was so ‘sensible.’ 3.75 stars

The volume contains the last two books featuring Hyacinth and Gregory of the Bridgerton romances, plus the first book of the prequel Bridgerton series featuring Billie Bridgerton, the aunt of the original heroes and heroines.

I didn't enjoy the last two Bridgerton romances. Because of my fondness and memories of the earlier books in the series, I couldn't help thinking that Hyacinth and Gregory are children: too young for these adult situations! I found myself skimming the large swathes of both stories.

The prequel was a gentle, simple romance. Nothing to write home about, but I enjoyed it the most out of this three-book set.

- definitely the best collection of the series, the mains all had much more personality as well as chemistry
- really enjoyed the female leads, they had actual individual personalities (although the words 'not like other girls' were once used verbatim oof)
- also the premises were more fun and varied: a lite mystery, a start-at-the-(almost)-end, and a cute childhood-enemies-to-lovers
- still with the problematic but honestly whatever
- if you're don't plan on reading the whole series then this is def the collection i'd recommend, you may not get all the context (or lady whistledown's hot goss) but the stories are much better

This one was difficult for me. I feel like by the time we got to Hyacinth and Gregory the storylines feel somewhat too similar so the twists in these novels to make them different just did not interest me. The mystery in Its in His Kiss was semi-amusing but not a fan of how Hyacinth was portrayed after being so strong willed in other Bridgerton novels. I just did not care for On the Way to the Wedding at all.
The Prequel novel, Because of Miss Bridgerton, was a neat look into the past when the Bridgerton 8's father was hardly old enough to even be mentioned.

I stopped reading after On the way to the wedding. Honestly, I felt like I had enough Bridgerton stories after about four books, but I kept going nonetheless as I wanted to give all 8 siblings their go. But after Gregory, I really am done and will skip the prequel. I liked Hyacinth's story well enough, but Gregory and Lucy were pretty boring to me. They just lacked character, especially following the very strongminded Hyacinth.

So in retrospect, I think this is my order from most to least favorite:
1. Benedict
2. Anthony
3. Daphne
4. Hyacinth
5. Francesca
6. Colin
7. Eloise
8. Gregory

The Bridgerton books were a fun distraction, but by this point in the series it felt harder to get into them. Maybe it was because I read straight through the series (really, how many romance novels can you read in a row?), maybe it was because the younger siblings played less of a role in the previous books, but it was harder for me to feel invested in them. And, by the time I got to the prequel, my loan was almost up and I just didn't care.

This is a compilation of the last two books in the Bridgerton series and focuses on the last two Bridgertons, Hyacinth and Gregory and their searches for love and marriage.

As with the other Bridgerton novels, this one is predictable in an easy-to-read enjoyable way. There is some witty banter between the characters and Ms Quinn revisits the other Bridgertons allowing readers to hear an update on their families. Overall, this is an enjoyable series to read.

This wasn’t as good as the books that came before it and the general plots were a bit redundant, it just feels a bit drawn out. Maybe my obsession has faded off now that the main Bridgerton Siblings are all married off but I don’t think I can finish the series which upsets me because I really did enjoy it initially.

the last bridgerton

It is sad to see the end of these fabulous books and this one didn’t disappoint. The saga surrounding the Bridgerton’s was well told throughout all the books and keeps the reading turning the pages to discover the next twist in the developing romances of the characters.

The final two marriages in the Bridgerton family are covered along with a delightful prequel. I really like Billie as a character. So strong and talented but not in the traditions of women of her era.
Fun light read. Best to have a short gap between these series as you can be overwhelmed by some definite similarities. Good fun easy read.

beautifully written!

I honestly can’t decide which book was my favorite from volume 3 because I loved them all! I think I liked this collection more than the first two volumes. Each Bridgerton’s personality is reflected so well in the way their love stories play out. The first prequel was wonderful and I’m excited to read the rest!

3 based on the average review for all 3 stories. While I loved Gregory's story, Hyacinth's and the prequel were not my favorite. At one point I got bored with Hyacinth's and St Clair's story that I started only skimming the paragraphs and I honestly did not finished the prequel.
As with all the other compilations of Bridgeton it was a mixed bag of great, good and meh.

How many Bridgerton's are there?

And the stories just keep coming. There's always a misunderstood one, one who doesn't fit the molds but you can still pick who ends up with who. So fun!

Excellent

This is so well written that you feel you're in the same room as the characters. The stories are all connected by family which makes it very satisfying as you catch up with previous characters from other books in the series.

I wouldn't say these were any more special than the other Bridgerton novels. I wouldn't say they were worse either. I liked them enough for what they are, but I'm also glad to have a break from them. I think they would make good beach reads.

Another triumph

Not one of these novels has been a disappointment. I've likes some more than others, which really boils down to preference, but each work has been lovely with unique characters and an intriguing storyline. Hard to put the book down once you start .

Wonderfully written and the only jq book that doesn't have a misunderstanding or near death experience in it. You know from the beginning the characters will be together and it is very comforting and might be my favorite jq book.
