For two decades he served…

…and never questioned the orders.

Would one act of mercy cost him?

Alistair believed in the work. He was the last line of defense against the rebels’ unending war to overthrow the Commonwealth. His legend preceded him – the greatest Titan the corps had ever produced.

Alistair’s mission was simple: catch and kill two rebels. Then they said a few words that forever changed his life.

Alexander’s family had ruled the Commonwealth for ten generations. His 30-years as Emperor had been peaceful, but only because he didn’t tolerate dissent. Now, a Titan had betrayed him.

Alistair must die.

In a battle of Good vs. Evil, the stakes have never been higher.

Can Alistair survive? Or will Earth’s greatest warrior fall to its greatest ruler?

You’ll love this first book in The Great Insurrection series, because this military science fiction has a hero that will challenge an empire.

I used to deliver pizza. I was pretty good at it, too. I mean, it's not that hard, but if I'm not going to brag, who is, right? Anyways, so I'm delivering pizza while I'm in college, and my boss has been in the pizza industry like six years. He's supposed to graduate from college this year, and I ask him, what are you going to do after college? We're all supposed to go out and conquer the world right after college, so this guy has to have some kind of plan.

He looked at me like I was delusional.

"I'm a writer, man."

Those four words changed my life more so than anything else ever spoken to me.
I'd always written, since I was twelve participating in online-wrestling forums in which you acted out your character. I wrote because it came naturally. Never once, in the entirety of my nineteen years did I think that writing could be a career though, until a Pizza Sage said those four words to me.

So what did I do? I went home and wrote a short story and immediately understood that I was the greatest writer to ever touch a keyboard. I brought it to the Pizza Sage and he told me what anyone could have told me--it was horrible. I might be dumb, probably am, but I'm also tenacious.

I spent the next seven years writing almost every day. My first novel grew to the length of 40,000 words, then I threw it away. My second novel grew to 140,000 words. I didn't throw it away, but it was rejected about 50 times by agents. My next novel ended up at around 55,000 words, which I showed to a few friends and shelved. Then I wrote Dead Religion, which is the only reason I have an author page at Amazon.

I have had four short stories published, paid and unpaid. 'Effects May Vary' won an award that was voted on by readers, which was pretty cool.

I'm currently getting my Masters in Business at the University of Georgia's Terry School of Business. I'm doing this in order to not deliver pizzas but still keep the lights on. I have a girlfriend who will soon be my fiancé, and after ten years, I imagine she's ready for that title.

I want to own a yacht.

“Warlord Born” by David Beers and Michael Anderle
Read by John Skelley
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Are you a rabid fan of action-packed military science fiction? If so, this book may be for you. I don’t think you’ll love it, but it won’t be a waste of your time. If you are not such a fan, take a pass.
There is nothing really great or terrible in this story, book 1 of “The Great Insurrection” series. I found nothing in it to be either offensive or memorable. It is an average book in this genre. If you’re looking for something to pass the time, this will serve.
My rating is 3 stars.
I thank Netgalley and the publisher, Recorded Books, Inc., for sending me this title. The opinions shared in this review are my own and I have received no compensation in exchange for offering them.

This was interesting. I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. It was action filled and gory at point but good scifi and an interesting concept I’m wrapping my head around.

A really decent space adventure book

Why I didn't say it was a space opera was because it didn't have enough moving pieces for me personally to call it a space opera. The premise of the book is military guy whose the best in the business is wronged and the authorities tried to arrest him and he escapes the clutches of the enemy and was saved by the people he has been killing for years and changed into them also; he then is proclaimed dead in his planet leaving his wife to tears.

Now about the World-building which is pretty cool, you have warriors in like a halo like suits with a sentient whip(yeah sentient but they don't talk, they can only used by their original owners). There are faraways planets rebels, genitically enhanced mutants to weird aliens, the other cool thing is the social structure is a monarchy which was a democracy in the past; so basically Earth was similar to our cotemporary Earth but then something happened and a man came and became the emperor.
There are small bits of conversation of previous presidents and prime ministers from different nations right before they were killed by the man who came out of nowhere. There are also two other factions which we later see on the book and a really good twist

The characters are of the easily likeable sort nothing too complicated the POV shifts from few characters bu the spotlight is our protagonist. There's also a big animal companion, there's interdimensional travel and we see a few magic and psychic powers here and there but mostly it's whip fighting.

If your planning to read this book don't expect some over complex plot, if you keep your expectation's limited it's a really good book. If your doing audio try the Graphic Audio version of this book which is pretty damn good and enhances the reading experience...

So, I don't know why Alexander wants Alistair Kane dead so badly BUT the fact that Alexander is sending his Titans across the universe to kill him tells me something. It certainly isn't because Alistair escaped when they were sent to kill one of their own. Alistair was the #1 Titan and suddenly they want him dead? I can't wait to get to the next book.

No romance and the F-bomb was used 13 times.

As for the narration: John Skelley did a fabulous job.

I'm a sucker for military sci-fi and love to listen to it via audiobook so I was happy to get a gifted copy of this.

At first I will admit to being a little off-balance as to who was who and what was going on. I think it's the nature of trying to drop a reader into the story in the midst of things. But, as audiobooks often allow me to do, I was able to push past that and get to more of the meat of the story.

As we follow Alistair's journey to Pluto and how he becomes involved (in a bit of a Red Rising way of being 'remade' in my opinion) we get to see a man fighting for something important (getting back to his wife) as well as being convinced that this new way is 'right'.

I would have liked to see a bit more world building - we get a lot of Romanesque names and you get the sense there is a lot going on that's been put in place but it's only a glimpse and I would have liked to get a bit more history there.

One other thing that I wished had been a little more fleshed out was the training to the ending. I know those sequences can be boring, but it seems as if he trained and suddenly we were at the ending without truly feeling the experience or what Alistair learned from it all.

I did love the incorporation of the 'dog' and some of the fun, nuanced things that draw the reader in. I think, in all, it was a fun read and entertaining. I definitely want to see what happens next though I hope that the next books are a little more fleshed out. For all that happened in this book 7 hrs of 'reading' time (aka 260 pages or so) didn't seem quite enough to give a full image of the world or the story.

My rating: 3.8*

Thanks to the publisher for gifting me an audiobook copy of this book via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I just finished this one

Although it didn’t keep me up all night, it was the first thing I grabbed this morning.
A compelling story about a future alternate world where autocratic dictator rules served by mindwashed populace. Then one wakes up and reluctantly joins the resistance. A great read.

Well, most stories don't start off with their main character getting killed! Especially one that is an elite warrior wearing a MechSuit of armor. But, that's exactly the opening scene for this book. Now, how he gets killed is up to you to read and find out. Let's just say it's kind of unusual as is most of the stuff in this book.

We have a main character that is an elite warrior who has been tasked with eliminating "Subversives". These are people that don't want to toe the government line. And, the more strict your government, the more Subversives you'll probably find. This Earth government is very strict. It's a dictatorship for the entire planet. A guy named Aurelius de Finita, is called the First Imperial Ascendant and he is one bad dictator. But, that's because he was brought up that way. His parents were very wealth apparently. So much so that they bought up most of Earth and then decided to let their son rule the planet "for the good of humanity" or at least that's the way I read the book.

Anyway, Alistair Kane is our main character and as I stated he dies right at the beginning of the book. You see, he did something that no Titan would ever do; it was inconceivable that a Titan could do this! Oh, Titans are what guys like Alistair Kane are called. They are really exterminators in MechSuits almost impervious to just about any weapon and they don't have to adhere to any laws. Except the law that their First Imperial Ascendant has made that say Subversives will die, all of them and anytime someone sees one. Subversives, by and large, don't have a reasonable way of fighting back. Oh, they can for a while, but the Titans are so finely trained that defeating one is near impossible. So how did Alistair Kane die. Well, it was kind of an accident. Read the book!

In this book there are a few names that you have to keep track of. While Alistair Kane is the name he was born with, he's also known as "Odin" or "Prometheus". Those are call signs which the military always use as if they are trying to hide who they really are. It doesn't work. Anyone looking at Alistair Kane in his MechSuit would know that he was "Odin" and later on, even without his armored suit, he fit the name of "Prometheus". Strangely though, that second name came to him from the Subversives. It's the name they gave him when he saved a bunch of them fighting on their side! Yes, I said that. Something happens in the book that makes Odin change his allegiances somewhat to where he winds up fighting for the people he once tried and did kill.

I like the writing in this book. It's the first time I read this author(s) and they do a good job of telling the story. It seems to flow pretty well and doesn't seem all that fantastical considering it is all happening in the far, far future on the planet Earth. Oh, and they do come up with some other unusual names such as "AllMother" and "AllSeer". Both of these characters will have major parts, the former in this story and I'll guess the latter will in the follow-on books. They all should be very good reading as this book was. Just so you know, this is a four book series. I'm going on to the second book, "Warlord Rising". It's going to be good too!

You know, I quite liked this entire series. This was a surprise to me. I was in need of a book that I wasn’t too invested in yet wanted to enjoy. (Ever had that moment?) So, I stumble across this David Beers series. Well, first, I need to “‘fess up”: I’m not actually “reading” these books. BUUUUT, I AM enjoying them through the audio drama versions by Graphic Audio. (NO, this is not a plug for the company. I’m just sharing a fact.) I’ve been using the service a lot this year. You should check it out. Face it, I despise most audio books. They don’t always have the right voice for the books, they are embarrassing when the reader tries to change their voice to the various characters the list goes on fir me. And that’s just my personal view. I’m genuinely happy if they are your thing. I’ve found a style that takes the best of them to my enjoyment. But I will warn you; Graphic Audio books are very expensive. So, don’t spend your own money if you can find them at your local library. They should have them through the Hoopla App. Listen: It’s such an amazing way to “listen” to a book & its series. Only drawback is if you’re really into a series and the library doesn’t have one of the books within. That sucks even if you’re reading a regular written book, though.
Back to this series. As I read the synopsis as well as some background through other sources, it seemed like an interesting concept. The blending of hard sci-fi with some Fantasy elements grabbed my attention. With the unique story, some solid characters and the blend of my favorite type of story and I was hooked. If proved to be much more than i expected. Now listen, I’ve read David Beers before; quite a while ago. But this series tops anything Of his this far. He’s a good author. Not everyone likes his style but I do.

What I really enjoyed was how it followed one of my favorite storyline tropes: enter the protagonist. Their life, their connections to this life, et al. Story leads you to grasp the fact that said character is a notorious hero who “drinks the cool-aid” in every way thus living and promoting the propaganda he thinks is the RIGHT way. But then, our protag has a life changing experience which opens their eyes to the fact they’re not only working for the wrong side but has shed a LOT of blood & even lost major portions of his soul along the way. Then as you know the rest of the story follows the protag on a quest to reclaim his lost soul & all set things right. But, here’s What I really like about this series: there is an interesting twist to that shtick which keeps you wanting more. Oh yeah, it’s a rollercoaster ride. So check it out.

First of all, despite Anderle getting second billing on this book, I doubt he had much to do with it. I'm not bashing Michael, but it's clear he sold out to a long list of up-and-coming authors (desperate?) in order to get his name on a ridiculous number of titles and maybe make some money. I enjoy his early books, but even those are nothing like "Warlord Born."

This is a serious sci-fi action tale, with dark and gritty politics and flawed characters. The world-building is fresh enough to pass muster and the pacing is decent... so why not five stars? There are two primary problems with this book, both of which probably get resolved in book two.

1. The protagonist is not committed to the cause. He's running away from a bad situation, but that's not to say he likes the destination he's found. I prefer a hero that knows what he wants and takes action to achieve those goals.

2. We don't know why the antagonist needs to be defeated. Aside from his Clausewitzian view on war, he seems to be running a peaceful and prosperous society. Are we sure the alternative is better?

The two problems synergize to reduce my investment in the story.

For political and social as well as for military reasons the preferred way of bringing about victory was the shortest, most direct way, and that meant using all possible force.

Luke Skywalker, John 117 Spartan, Indiana Jones and Stargate all rolled into one big a melting pot, big enough to take the world and all it's got, and keep it stirring for a thousand years or more, to turn out Titan soldiers by the score, (some artistic license taken here). Alistair Kane, the most wanted man in the solar system/universe, why does the ascendant want him dead? Why is he willing to stop at nothing to achieve his goal? All good questions, find out in the next exciting episode of The Great Insurrection. Unfortunately, just about every Tom, Dick and Harry are after Alistair and all he did was to help some people, just goes to show no matter where you go, there are injustices everywhere.
Nonetheless, the author has "hooked" me, so there is that. So on to book 2 to see how this mystery unravels.

The universe is a little confused in this first part of a long series, sold as an action space opera series.
However, there is very little action in the story, in which the main character only experiences events and never decides to do anything other than survive.
A main character who otherwise doesn't have much interest, no depth.
The revelations at the end of the book shed some light on an opaque universe, but a universe which nevertheless gives the impression of being very narrow when it should be of unfathomable depth, which always has the gift of astonishing me.
The construction of the story, which gives a large place to the big bad hereditary dictator and to a “historian of the great insurrection” is not very light.
I'll pass on the following episodes.

Good science fiction book good character development, excellent beginning.

Good science fiction book, excellent characters, good character development, fast paced action and good plot lines. I love the grasshopper moments when the main protagonist was being trained. For those who not understand that look up the reference of kung fu the television series you’ll understand then. I read the book into settings so I would have to say it was a good page turner. Going on to read the next book. I hope more people decide to pick this one up.

GraphicAudiobook - 3.75 stars. This was the first GA book I've listened to that seemed off. I usually enjoy the sound effects and music but in this book, I found it to be incredibly distracting. I couldn't focus during a particular battle scene because of the weird techno playing almost as loud as the narrator. As for the book/story itself, it was entertaining enough. It had a bit of Red Rising feel to it -painful rebuild to make a superior humanoid that leads an insurrection by the lower class. I liked the dog/wolf alien thing named Obstinate.

How big is the Universe?

Our Solar System is huge but small compared to the Universe. David Beers takes you on a wild ride through our Solar System and then beyond. With great characters and using several dimensions to enable travel beyond the speed of light David takes you to Pluto and then a lot further. Can hardly wait for the next book in this series. If you like Wi-Fi then you will enjoy this book.

When I last read a military sci-fi, I was overwhelmed because there was such an inference on "military" stuff. I want sci-fi, and I want things to blow up and shoot something without the guilty feeling later. Yeah, it's not realistic, but that's what I'm looking for in a book, to have fun. Warlord Born is that fun. It was fun to experience this fun sci-fi fight on Puto and the world after. The war is just good old fashion sci-fi fighting, and I enjoyed it. I love the whip, as it's equivalent to a lightsaber. I guess what I wished for our MC was that I wanted to he wore a similar super armor from the beginning. But that is just because I like suits like that. Some parts feel a bit overhanded in explaining things, but that's really about it. Overall, I had a blast and look forward to checking out the next book.

This was a DNF. I’m not sure if the DNF is for the narration, or the book itself. While listening to this on a car trip, it felt like I was plugged into the middle of the story and was lost. I got about 30-35 minutes into this before I said OK I’m done. This is normally the type of book that I like but it feels like I woke up in the middle of a video game somebody else was playing. I might like this better if I read it instead of listen.

Seriously a good book

You like military science fiction, outstanding action, someone absolutely driven to perform , you want to read this book.

It starts really fast and seems to get faster all the way to the end. I put work off to read this book.

Looks like I'll be buying the rest of these books without a doubt I want to see how this turns out!

Loved the parts of the book that followed Alastair, enjoyed the parts that followed other members of the subversives. I skipped most of the parts with other characters...I do not want to know what the “bad guys” are doing until the “heroes” find out. If those parts had been left out I would have enjoyed the book more.

First, great acting and sound effects. Space sounds have come a long way from the Deathstalker series. The sound is what really grabbed my attention. I knew nothing about this author or book, bu the cover looked cool and it sounded like something space related, so gave it a try. Overall, the story is pretty standard, but I'm enjoying it. Looking forward to the next Graphic Audio.

An Outstanding story!

Hands down, Alistair is my favorite character in a while. He is the Spartan asked for in a war against the Roman Empire, come again. But the story will draw you in; it whispers, "Finish the story." As you lose yet another hour of sleep, the story holds you & you cannot put it down. After all, you NEED to know how your favorite character fares...

Book kept my attention all the way through

This was a good story. The world and past were explained in snippets which worked really well. I liked the characters. It was fast action from beginning to end with just enough pauses to help us understand the characters better. I look forward to the rest of the series 🙂

This was a good first book for the series. I enjoyed reading it. One of the enticing aspects of the book for me was that clearly things are bigger than they seem. There is a higher and greater narrative at play and certainly a lot of back story that will presumably be drip feed.

It was worth my time, and I will be reading the next in the series.
