I loved this book. I am on my way to becoming Hanuman’s devotee and this book definitely helped me understand Hanuman in deeper level ❤️ I love this book, it’s simple in language and interesting 💕
What a fantastic book. Each verse of the Hanuman Chalisa is accompanied by a wonderful, oft unheard story of Shri Hanuman jee. So easy to read, feel inspired and divine. 🌸🙏🏼
After having read The Little Blue Book on Krishna by Dr. Shubha Vilas, my heart desired to read more from this author. Vilas’s spiritual intellect reflected in his writing had captured my heart. That’s when I ordered Hanuman Chalisa. I had previously read a translation of the Hanuman Chalisa by Devdutt Pattanaik in his book ‘my Hanuman Chalisa’, but something inside pushed me to read Dr. Vilas’s interpretation too.
The moment my book arrived, I was thrilled to see the book bound in red deluxe silk with a picture of Lord Hanuman in golden colour on the hardcover. I couldn’t wait to read it and got started.
As I finish reading this marvellous book, my eyes are filled with tears of joy. Despite my illness, a mystical calm envelopes me. I am missing my (late) Mom who was an ardent devotee of Lord Hanuman. I wish she was here with me today and we could read this book together, and immerse ourselves in the Leela of Lord Hanuman and seek His blessings.
The book beautifully translates the (3) dohas and (40) chaupais. To reinforce the meaning and set the context under which a particular chaupai must have been written by the blessed sage Tulsidas, Dr. Vilas narrates the true story behind the chaupai. So vivid is the narrative that it makes the chaupai come alive. There were so many stories that I hadn’t heard before; they left me in awe of Lord Hanuman, increasing my reverence for him manifold. A devotee like Lord Hanuman will never be born again. His humility and servant leader attitude is laudable and exemplary.
A book to be cherished and read a thousand times over. Last but not least, Dr. Vilas - may Lord Hanuman & Lord Ram bestow their choicest blessings on you for the remarkable gift you have given to the world with this writing.
Hanuman Chalisa is one of the most widely recited devotional hymns. Most Hindu adults, have listened to this several times while growing up and many remember it by heart. The original hymn comprises of 40 verses sang in the praise of Lord Shri Hanuman, one of the most beloved Hindu deities. There are actually 43 verses with 2 dohas before the 40 verses and 1 doha at the end. The word Chalisa is derived from Chalis - what the number 40 is called in Hindi. The original hymn was written by Tulsidas Ji, who is also the author of Ramcharitmanas.
The book written by Shubha Vilas does a phenomenal job of providing explanations and meaningful anecdotes to each of the verses. It would not be a stretch to say that many of us do not know the meaning of each of the verses and hence this book is highly helpful in that regard.
The book showcases, through various stories and anecdotes, Lord Hanuman's divine qualities, his faith, his courage, his humility, his conviction, his compassion and above all his sincerity and devotion to Lord Shri Ram. For several of the verses, it gives multiple stories depicting the verse.
Sharing some of the translations and brief stories from the book:
Kanchan Barana Biraja Subesa Kanan Kundal Kunchit Kesa i.e. Golden colored and handsomely dressed, With earrings and curly locks.
Maa Anjana naming Lord Hanuman was more because she wanted her child to be internally beautiful. Eternal beauty wanes with time but internal beauty does not. By virtue of being in proximity to the Sun (both during infancy when Lord Hanuman tried to swallow the Sun God and also when he obtained his lessons from the Sun God), sunshine had a great influence on Lord Hanuman's body. His body had a golden tinge, akin to the sun glow which is known as Kanchan Barana. That golden tinge only enhanced when he began his journey to the south in search of Mother Sita.
Prabhu Charitra Sunibe ko Rasiya Rama Lakhana Sita Mana Basiya i.e. You crave to hear about the Lord, Rama, Lakshmana, Mother Sita dwell in you.
Lord Rama was in a light mood and said to Lord Hanuman, "You are talking about blessings. But you have come so late, right at the end, I have no blessings left to offer you. Since all my blessings are exhausted, what can I offer you now". Lord Hanuman replied in an instant, "To some you may have given the power of scriptures as blessing, to others you may have given wisdom or guidance or power or fame or even wealth, but I am not looking at such big things as blessings. I am only interested in the smallest thing in your possession". Lord Rama asked, "What is it that I have not yet given away as a blessing. What is the smallest thing I have?" Lord Hanuman continued with a smile on his face, "My dear Lord, when you had met Lord Parashuram, you had told him that the smallest thing in your possession was your name Rama. I want that. Please give me your name as a gift and blessing. Though it is small, but that little word contains the strength of the entire universe in it." With tears in his eyes, Lord Rama embraced Lord Hanuman. From that moment on, Lord Hanuman owned Lord Rama's name. Lord Hanuman never lost a chance to chant and hear Rama naam and Rama katha with great relish. "Prabhu Charitra Sunibe ko Rasiya." From Lord Hanuman, we learn to establish the presence of God in our hearts. Our hearts are filled with darkness, because we have not given permission to light to enter. Light can also enter through windows. The Lord can enter through our ears if we engage in hearing about Him.
While not identical, and I do not have much knowledge to draw a comparison, this message is also in line with - 'Kaliyuga Keval Naam Adhara' i.e. the path to spiritual enlightenment and liberation in Kaliyuga is through the holy name of Shri Hari.
Lord Hanuman stood in the middle of the court with his chest torn, exposing his heart. Inside there was an effulgent and beautiful image of Maa Sita and Lord Rama. They were eternally enshrined within Lord Hanuman's heart forever. Not only did they reside in his heart but he too resided in their hearts. "Rama Lakhana Sita Mana Basiya."
Tumharo Mantra Bibhishana Mana Lankeshvara Bhae Saba Jaga Jana i.e. Vibhishana accepted your advice, And became the king of Lanka, this the whole world knows.
Vibhishan Ji had to decide whether to speak up in the matter of Maa Sita's abduction or to keep quiet. He had to choose between a life of opulence or a life of focus. A life of show or a life of substance. A life of exploitation or a life of sacrifice. A life of vices or a life of values. It was a question of security vs uncertainty. If only he could tolerate Ravana, he would have everything. Lord Hanuman's words rang in his ears. "If you think you are Ravana's brother, then your Dharma is to stay in Lanka and be his advisor. Then you can fulfill your duties at a physical level, your bodily relationships. If you think you are my brother, belonging to the family of Shri Rama and Mata Sita, then your dharma is spiritual, which means you can leave Lanka and take Shri Rama's shelter." Vibhishan Ji had clarity now. Lord Hanuman's words made perfect sense. He knew what he had to do. He would go with his spiritual dharma, the ultimate dharma. "Tumharo Mantra Bibhishana Mana" Vibhishan Ji gave Ravana a piece of his mind, "Please leave Sita. It is a sin to kidnap another's wife and force yourself on her. It does not befit a king to behave in this manner."
Sankata Te Hanumana Chudavai Mana Krama Bachana Dhyana Jo Lavai i.e. Hanuman removes all hardships For those who meditate on him in thoughts, words or deeds.
Lord Hanuman is supposed to be pratyaksha devata, or the most efficient living deity of the present age of Kali, since he is ever ready and ever eager to help his devotees out of trouble. He alone is said to be capable of bestowing all the four aims of life (dharma, artha, kama and moksha) and for those who desire, he also gives the fifth fruit i.e. bhakti.
Lord Hanuman, who was all tied up, could perceive that evil forces were plotting against his innocent father. He had to do something to stop it. He broke open his shackles and in one leap crossed the vast jungle to land on Kumbhasadan. Althought he was a baby monkey, small in size, he could be really heavy in weight. Lord Hanuman's landing imbalanced Kumbhasadan and he fell flat on the ground. Lord Hanuman simply did not allow him to get up. The other demons came to lift him but he flung them far away with one flick of his finger. Soon the entire area was clear of all demons and Kumbhasadan was left alone. Then Lord Hanuman liftem him with one hand and punched him hard with the other. That was the end of Kumbhasadan. He dropped dead like a lifeless doll. There was no danger for Kesari now. "Sankata Te Hanumana Chudavai"
Without showing any respect, the king ordered the saint, Tulsidas Ji, "I have heard that you have mystical powers. Show me what you can do. Let me see what the truth behind your fame is. " Tulsidas Ji replied, "I have no magical powers. I only know how to chant Shri Rama's name which has the power of purifying hearts. That's the only magic I know and believe in. The holy name is not chanted to show off or to acquire name and fame. Neither am I looking for any instant publicity." The guards jumped into action on the orders of the king and caught the saint. Without any fear, the saint folded his hands and started chanting Lord Hanuman's names. Then he sang out a prayer to Lord Hanuman; the intensity and purity of his prayers were both stunning and soothing. Everyone presented there had a supremely spiritual experience hearing his divine voice. Within moments, an army of monkeys had entered the guarded premises, breaking everything that could lay their hands on. Total chaos prevailed. The king sat dumbstruck and he had no idea how to handle the catastrophe. In the meanwhile, the king noticed that Tulsidas Ji was calm and composed and none of the monkeys had touched him. In fact, a few monkeys had formed a protective circle around him, sitting at his feet. Now the king realized how he could save himself. He climbed down his throne and ran to him, falling at his feet. When the king pleaded repeatedly, Tulsidas Ji opened his eyes. As soon as he stopped chanting, the monkeys quietened down and walked away. Soon the courtroom was empty. Tulsidas Ji was untouched by any harm. When one remembers Lord Hanuman sincerely, chants his names, meditates on him, Hanuman Ji does everything to protect his devotee. "Sankata Te Hanumana Chudavai / Mana Krama Bachana Dhyana Jo Lavai."
A must read for anyone interested to learn more about our beloved God, Shri Hanuman Ji and to advance oneself on the path of spiritual awareness.
