148 years from now...

The United States, along with several of its allies, had established six bilateral colonies stretching toward the farthest edges of the solar system, igniting a new resources boom unlike mankind had ever seen. Russia, China, and India soon followed, establishing their own colonies and trading routes. For a time, the solar system was prosperous and peaceful. But, to no one’s surprise, disputes eventually rose, coupled with a new arms race to dominate space with advanced weaponry, mankind was pushed towards the brink of the first solar war. With all colonies deadlocked along a Demilitarized Zone between Jupiter and Saturn, American and Chinese negotiators on Earth were close to signing a peace treaty to end the escalating tensions.

Short story that may get worked into a series. Well written and certainly makes me want to read the what happens next.
