If you’re going to stick your hand into somebody else’s refrigerator, you better be ready to deal with the consequences. Especially when, instead of perishable foodstuffs, the icebox in question contains people who are “provisionally alive.”

They haven’t died yet — death has not yet made up its mind about them. And even though most of them will never open their eyes again, a lucky few do stand the ghost of a chance of returning to this world. What a pity then that among these fortunate souls, there is one man who thought his earthly affairs concluded for all eternity.

His case file bristles with cautionary attributes such as “serial killer,” “extremist” and “mentally unstable.” And yet could this be the best candidate for an assignment that has already claimed the lives of several veteran operators? Who knows…

About the author

Anton Tekshin

Anton Tekshin was born on June 13th, 1987, which fell on a Saturday, though his whole life he’s felt like it was a Friday. He grew up in a small town, where children’s activities consisted of alcohol consumption and playing soccer on the local pasture. Early on, books became a way for the future author to escape these dreary conditions and travel to amazing worlds. He liked sci-fi thrillers best of all and carried this passion with him through years of study and subsequent work in the field of forestry. His favorite authors back then were Lois Bujold, Emilio Salgari, George R. R. Martin and Robert Heinlein.

Anton always liked to tell stories, and at some point he realized that he had to try to write himself. By that time, he already had extensive experience interacting with people from various walks of life — from military personnel and “survivalists” to members of the criminal underworld. Anton enjoys putting people in extreme situations and watching them find a way out. But he does this, for the most part, only in his books :)

“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

By all accounts, this is a perfectly worded review. Unfortunately, some of our fellow readers are offended that I am not pouring my heart out and offering a detailed and intimate breakdown of my thoughts on the books. As such they have reported me to the authorities and I have been warned against continuing my bad behavior. I will not. So I may be banned. If so, it was a fun journey with you.

If I enjoy a book, my goal is to promote it and help the author by encouraging others to read it. I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. I am simply saying that I liked it. I would like you to read it and make your own decision. After all, you are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.

Cheers

Book one

This is just one of the books that I received as an ARC to check over for translation errors from Russian to English.
I enjoyed the story and found the translation to be very good with minimal errors.
In my opinion Russian authors write some of the best Litrpg stories.
I recommend this book to Litrpg fans.

Superb

Brilliant fast paced debut novel. A strange hybrid of spy thriller a la Ludlum and Forsyth, and litrpg with a touch of sci-fi as well. Starts a bit slowly but over time it just snowballs into wowness. I guess this just makes it even more clear how Russian litrpg authors are way ahead of the rest!

This is my first novel by this author, and it's a strange one.

Clem (the MC) is a half anarchist, half psychopath who made it his job to hunt down the dregs of society. He was successful, no matter their station in life.

Until he wasn't. He gets shot from an impossible angle, then wakes up many years later after being stored in cryostasis. He's unfrozen by a shady organization and his only contact is Grigory, a man who drives a fancy new Mercedes.

Grigory gives Clem a new identity, a new job, and a task to find the people who are killing top level players in the latest VR RPG. They're dying by the dozens, despite living in homes or apartments with no windows, high security and enormous resources at their disposal.

Clem dives in, joining the game as he moves from level 1. The notifications are regular, but slow down as the book progresses.

I won't spoil what comes after this, but Clem (his game name is Cooldwon after he mixed up the letters) gets the handle of it quickly.

Overall, I have mixed views on this book. I like the premise even if it is very busy and a bit overwrought, and the story does pick up once Clem is in the game. If the story had just stayed with the game, I think it would have been a better book for it. At times it reminds me of Vasily Mahanenko's Galactagon series, where different factions and pirate clans are fighting against each other.

The then real world intrudes again, and the excitement is lost. The book takes a strange turn at the 68% mark, and although it works out for Cooldwon, IMO it takes too long to get where he is going.

Still, if you're a fan of LitRPG sci-fi like I am, it might be worth giving it a chance. I am going to read book 2 in the hope that the story improves.

4/5*

I received a review copy of this book.
If you're a scifi fan, and you like space adventures, then this is just the book for you if you're a LitRPG fan as well. Very well done, and rather amusing to boot. This is a story that takes place both in and out of game, which adds to it's storyline possibilities. By the end of the book, we've seen many things that could lead to future stories, both in and out of game, and we get a clear glimpse of the kind of person our main character is, and I think there's going to be great fun in future installments in the series, so if you're hunting for a new series to start, this could very well be the one you're looking for.

good read

Enjoyed reading this book. The storyline was interesting and there were some good surprises.

The only reason I am not giving it five stars is because there was a bit too much inside joke, to the author perhaps, that I couldn’t follow. Some of the references were so specific that i couldn’t understand what was going on

Sadly nothing special, the rather dire hops from space, to some sort of odd space station to the real world were all rather jarring, and we seem to be in some sort of strange universe combining criogenics, VR and some form of clan politics. I'm not sure I'll go for book 2 unless I'm desperate.

Reread

A rather amusing book about a vigilante who gets a second chance. The chosen character name Cooldwon is a bit annoying but gets "forgotten/corrected" very fast. I liked that not every outcome is always forseeable and that actions have consequences. The second part of the book is very amusing and describes a typical anarchistic day of the cult game "Space Station 13".

The protagonist´s visions are interesting as until the end of the story their cause seems open for debate. I loved the character of Ogurtsuv!!

The solution of main plot in later books was rather disapointing/unrealistic for me.
