This is my first novel by this author, and it's a strange one.
Clem (the MC) is a half anarchist, half psychopath who made it his job to hunt down the dregs of society. He was successful, no matter their station in life.
Until he wasn't. He gets shot from an impossible angle, then wakes up many years later after being stored in cryostasis. He's unfrozen by a shady organization and his only contact is Grigory, a man who drives a fancy new Mercedes.
Grigory gives Clem a new identity, a new job, and a task to find the people who are killing top level players in the latest VR RPG. They're dying by the dozens, despite living in homes or apartments with no windows, high security and enormous resources at their disposal.
Clem dives in, joining the game as he moves from level 1. The notifications are regular, but slow down as the book progresses.
I won't spoil what comes after this, but Clem (his game name is Cooldwon after he mixed up the letters) gets the handle of it quickly.
Overall, I have mixed views on this book. I like the premise even if it is very busy and a bit overwrought, and the story does pick up once Clem is in the game. If the story had just stayed with the game, I think it would have been a better book for it. At times it reminds me of Vasily Mahanenko's Galactagon series, where different factions and pirate clans are fighting against each other.
The then real world intrudes again, and the excitement is lost. The book takes a strange turn at the 68% mark, and although it works out for Cooldwon, IMO it takes too long to get where he is going.
Still, if you're a fan of LitRPG sci-fi like I am, it might be worth giving it a chance. I am going to read book 2 in the hope that the story improves.
