Raven Cursed #4

Shadowmark

Rate this book
When a god wants you dead, it’s safe to assume life can’t get any worse. Wrong. I’m enemy-number-one to a powerful fae and I’ve ticked off the Master of the vampires one too many times. Life—or rather, death—is coming at me fast.
I definitely didn’t expect a demon placing a bounty on me to be added to the what-the-hell-else-could-go-wrong Bingo card.
Adding to my problems, the two men in my life are pushing me to make a choice that could not only cost me a friendship but a valued ally.
What do I do when: one of the most powerful beings in the world wants me dead, I’m out of my depth in unknown magic, and my allies could become my enemies? I’ll do what I always do when I’m against the ropes or cornered—fight harder.
Because there is only one option: Survive.

McKenzie Hunter is the author of urban fantasy, dark fantasy, and paranormal romance books. She discovered early that new adventures were just a page-turn away; all she had to do was read a book. She’s had her share of escapades from hanging out with vamps, joining the chaos of shifter packs, creating spells with witches, and avoiding deals with the fae.

When she isn't working on her next book, she’s reading, binge-watching TV, or disappearing into her own world during nature walks (probably on the lookout for magical beings—or maybe not).

Another cliffhanger

It really is amazing just how hateful Elizabeth is, and just how clueless Nolan is. A lot happened in this book. I think it was the best of them all, and would have been 4 stars if it wasn't for the cliffhanger ending. I'm usually forgiving of these sorts of things, but EVERY SINGLE BOOK is a bit much.

Wow! That book was utterly fantastic and definitely did not disappoint in any way! It was a sheer rollercoaster of a ride with Erin fighting every step of the way to stay alive. This is definitely a series where you have to read the previous books to completely follow what is going on in this one, but all the others are fantastic too, so well worth the read!

Many questions get answered in this book, but as always many more are generated as well. Erin is a great character and her maturity and development really grow in this one as does her magical skills. She finally makes a decision about the two men in her life - I was not disappointed by who she finally chose, but I would have been happy with either one to be honest. They both have their pros and cons... I loved her relationships with Madison and Cory - they are great side characters as well.

Malific and Elizabeth were both incredibly fierce and ruthless, stopping at nothing to get what they want - just a shame Erin seems to be part of their plans, as evil as they are! I do think Nolan needs to grow a bit more of a backbone and stand up to these two women and do more to help Erin, although I know it wasn't totally possible for him this time around! Maybe we'll see more of that next time...

The ending was a complete and utter shocker! I was so NOT expecting what happened at all. Can't wait now for the next book to find out where the story arc goes now!

I wanted to like this book. I liked the other books. This one really just continued the endless love triangle (either go poly or stop with the kissing who you are with and making no actual commitment). The love triangle does get a sort of resolution however it seems more due to the fact that the person who is chosen was just the person she was with when stuff went down. The mother drama was dragged out for the whole book. WHOLE BOOK. It got old. Elizabeth the evil Aunt - Old. Nolan the apologetic absent I created you to kill your mother but now I regret it Father - Old. The book ended by not really concluding anything in the main arc except for sort of choice of a person and one small thing concluded. It ends on a cliff hanger, which is what I say when the book leaves you in a whole new situation as a "draw" to the next book but which if the series was suddenly to stop you basically have to believe that peril was the only logical ending with no resolution. I would have given this a two star but I really like the therapist. And Madison and Cory. And Landon. Asher and M are just kind of alpha-holes.

Cliffhanger

I really loathe cliffhangers. They suggest poor editing or writing. If the writing is good you come back for the characters and a larger arc. You don’t need plot devices and theatrics.

This book, to me, took everything up to another level.

In the past, we have been along on the journey to get to know and eventually learn to get to know and like Erin. Is she the most perfect person? Absolutely not. But, we have also been able to follow along on her journey and see that she is trying her best to deal with everything that has been thrown at her.

Unfortunately, she is dealing with two very ALPHA and domineering men. There is Asher - an Alpha in his own right (he is the Alpha and CEO of the Northwest pack) and then there is Mephisto. He is one of the Huntsman - actually the Leader of the Huntsman - who we are beginning to learn is a god in his own right. What a battle to be in the middle of......

And, to top everything off. She happens to be the daughter of a CRAZY and psychopathic other god who would LOVE to have her killed without a second thought. If any of this sounds crazy....read the book. I can not even begin to explain it in a way that would give it the credit that it is due.

So....oh my gosh. Things are crazy. And, this is not to take away from the fact that she has TWO very AMAZING men trying to help and protect her. She also has a best friend who is a powerful witch and a sister who is the head of the STF (which is the supernatural task force put in place to deal with certain issues) things are getting OUT OF CONTROL.

All I can say is READ THIS BOOK. Start at the beginning and get to this point.

That is the only way that you will EVER understand my frustration at having to wait for the next book and having to wait to find out what is going to happen next.

I am NOT a patient person. I thought that maybe I was. But, I am realizing that with the state of my frustration that I may not have the level of patience that I thought I had.

Ugh.....time to wait for another book......

Well that was pretty unexpected

I’m really torn here.
Did I enjoy this book? HECK YEAH!! Like seriously, this was a really wild and enjoyable ride. BUT I really am uncertain if I want to continue this series.
It’s been extremely great getting to know Erin and this incredible world that Ms. Hunter has built. But I just can’t stand all the crap that keeps happening to this poor girl. It’s like reading an Emma Adams series. The heroine cannot catch a break and it’s from one crisis to another with zero breathing room. It’s an exciting thing to read, but if you can’t really empathize with the main character why bother continuing with their journey. There’s not much character growth or development here at all, Erin is still reckless and how awful that the one night she chooses to go along with having some fun EVERYTHING comes to a head and she ends up in a crappy situation...AGAIN.
Other take aways, I’m NOT happy about Erin’s choice. Although when she voiced her concerns about who she was going to choose Mr. God or Mr. Alphahole, I kinda saw why it was so confusing for her. At the end of the day you should only be with someone who will put you first and is willing to move the heavens and earths just because it’ll make you happy. Erin did just that, but always having to make tough decisions is no way to live.

Once again left hanging...

Erin once again is living on the edge of a life near her grasp and yet many ways far from it. While the love triangle starts to unravel so did so any things in Erin’s life. I love the humor and banter the author places in the story and am once again left with a cliff hanger that is like the need for a fix. In a world where people are anything but normal Erin keeps becoming more; whether she chooses it or not.

3.5⭐️

Sadly, I thought this series was done when I started it. That cliff hanger will be the end of me.

I will say this one got a bit annoying with
⭐️constant thinking of she was above the "grey" areas of magic and death
⭐️love triangle
⭐️mommy issues, like the woman wants you dead and you don't know her. The mom who raised you should be more than enough

This is fast becoming my favourite book series of all time

This is the fourth instalment of McKenzie Hunter’s Raven Cursed series and this is turning out to be my favourite of all the work she has done so far. If you’ve read the previous books, you’ll definitely want to dive headlong into this. Once again, I paused everything else I was reading to immerse myself back into this universe.

I love McKenzie Hunter’s style of writing. It flows well and pulls you along at a pace which matches the scenes being described. I can read these books with confidence, knowing there won’t be any glaring grammatical or continuity errors to break the suspension of my disbelief.

I am fully invested in all the characters and they are so well developed. I read a lot, often around seven books a week and I can honestly say that Erin is one of my favourite female characters. I relate to her so strongly. In terms of character development, there has been a marked growth in her maturity and magical ability over the series and I found myself really rooting for her.

In the last few books we have had the question of #teammephisto or #teamasher. Without spoilers, I can confirm that a decision was finally made and I, for one, was very happy with that decision. Here’s hoping that there are more of these scenes in future books.

I finished the book having had many questions answered as one story arc closed but with many more raised as a new arc began. As ever, the ending was dramatic and brilliantly done. I hadn’t seen it coming and I’m delighted. That big shiny hook has definitely reeled me in and I’m hankering for book five. It can’t come soon enough.

If you read and enjoyed the previous books in this series, you won’t be disappointed. If you haven’t read the previous books, what are you waiting for? Go and get them.

I’m off to nurse my book hangover with a cuppa and a lie down. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

I absolutely love love love the progression of this story arc. What an action packed adventure from start to finish book this book will keep you up all night reading!

Erin is tough as nails and never gives up and I was blown away by how ruthless Malific and Elizabeth can be to get what they want.

I loved seeing Erin navigate the complicated water of her and her father developing relationship. Trust is a hard gap to bridge and I love how this evolution is taking place it feels real and makes me want to see what the future holds for them as family.

This book also sorts through Erin's complicated feelings for Mephisto and Asher.  Wowser decisions decisions such a complex situation and complex feelings.

This is a must read series you won't be disappointed!! Highly recommend reading it. I litterally can hardly wait for the next book!

Don't waste your time. Bad and upsetting ending

I'm so pissed off about the ending. Erin the main character was killed off at the very end and the evil person just kept on going. What kind of sick author leaves her readers with such a heart wrenching and unfinished ending ,especially with no book to follow. MC Kenzie Hunter is just as evil and demented as some of her characters. I will never read another by her again. I wish I had never read this series. I have never read a book with such a upsetting end as Shadow mark.Don't waste your time with this author.Minus 1 Star

Fantastic read, Erin really does go through it in this book, I have changed my mind on Asher while reading this book and actually felt sorry for him. Mephisto is still himself and it was nice to see he had her interests at heart although he has his own agenda. It was still funny in places which had me chuckling along and had some awesome fighting scenes as usual. I cannot wait for the next book, I need to know what is going to happen to Erin and can they find her??? Amazing series and a must read.

I despise cliff hangers

I loved the book until the end. I despise cliff hangers, especially when the time between books is long enough to forget things. I don't typically re-read books. I recommend waiting until the series is complete.

Raven Cursed Series *Books 1-5
(Fireborne; Silverfall; Nightsoul; Shadowmark; Hellcrossed;)
Author: Mckenzie Hunter

Overall:
I LOVED this series and couldn’t put it down. The story arc is complex in a way that kept me engaged and appreciating the author’s writing. The story is nonstop and the action keeps coming at you . The sub plots in-between the main story arc are well thought out and detailed. The banter is witty, funny, and entertaining.
There are some spicy moments but it’s not over done. I love a super steamy romantic fantasy these books didn’t get steamy until the end. That being said while having some steam these books were not a super smutty romantic fantasy BUT…the story and writing were so good that it didn’t matter and was well worth the read. It still has all the things I want in a romance while not sacrificing the story to give it to me.
The world has a mix of so many of the magical beings you want in a fantasy book.
I couldn’t put it down and wanted to cry when I got to the end of book 5 and couldn’t go on to book 6.
But I did pre-order it and I did pick another series by Mckenzie Hunter to read next because I liked this series and the way it was written so much.

Likes:
- I liked the characters.
The Characters are steeped in mystery for a lot of the story. Yet I was still drawn to a lot of the characters by actions without the mystery being revealed. I found the characters were complex and the personalities were well built.
-The author challenged my vocabulary and I left each book feeling smarter because of it ! But what can I say I’m a word nerd. Lol
-Once the steamy tension gets started it’s pulled so tight you can feel it.
-I always love a strong female lead which you get from this book. However our lead while strong is still very flawed which makes her feel more real to me.
-The complexity of the story!
Sometimes I need an easy read sometimes a complicated one. This book manages to be complex while being easy to read. That’s not an easy thing to do. The authors writing in my opinion is very fluid and easy to navigate while keeping the complexity of the story the entire time.
-Plot within a plot.
Sometimes big book series’s can get dragged out and cause me to lose interest. While the main story arc is dragged out and I was wanting that big reveal the author managed to keep all the sub plots so entertaining that I enjoyed the ride while the drag of the main story was happening . This is another thing that I don’t personally find often in a-lot of books.

Dislikes: (Not really dislikes in this case)
-Not a dis like but more something that I thought I should point out to potential readers. The main story arc does seem to take a long time to get through HOWEVER…. Between the witty banter and well written sub plots the author kept me entertained so much I found myself not minding it.
-Also NOT A Dislike but more of a personal preference. I like a little more steam in my books but that does not at all take away from this series for me.
*** SO not really true dislikes just some things to point out and personal preferences.

After the last book, Erin is now tied to her mother and must figure out a way to either nether binding or kill her without killing herself in the process. When looking for answers, she realizes a demon has put a bounty on her with a powerful magical grimoire as the incentive. But of course Malific puts a time crunch on Erin when she goes after everyone she cares about to force her to do what she wants. Can Erin keep everyone she cares about safe or will she end up losing someone along the way?
This was another book where Erin was driving me nuts off and on. She has tried avoiding the situation bc she knows she needs to make a decision but just goes all in with poor decisions yet again. She eventually does make a decision (thank goodness) but I was definitely driven nuts along the way. She is also tested over and over again by Malific and her loved ones are targeted repeatedly. She has to make some difficult decisions and puts herself in debt to someone she would rather not have as well. She really does mean well and truly cares about her friends. Now that she has magic of her own, she doesn’t still feel like she is callous and uncaring anymore.
There is a lot that goes on in this book, but not a ton of high stakes action again. Erin is mostly searching for answers again and trying to find someone to undo the binding. There is a huge betrayal at the end of this book that I really should have seen coming but it wasn’t on my radar with everything else going on. Once again, I do enjoy the storyline but I don’t have any more of the books and my audible subscription is over so I’m not sure when I’ll get back to this series since I don’t want to switch to actual books midseries.

I can't wait to be done with this series

The books just seem to be getting worse and worse. I'm traditionally a big fan of Mackenzie Hunter but I'm just having a really hard time getting into this series. I figured it was only five books and the first two are pretty good but they just seemed to be getting significantly worse as you continue on. Most of the book doesn't need to be read it can be skipped and you'll still understand what's going on 30 pages in. I plan to get the last book just to finish at the series but It's just been a real disappointment. The characters obnoxious with very little personal growth, the growth that they do note is superficial and has to be noted by MC in order to prove that there's some growth to the reader. The relationships are superficial with no real deep meaning. And don't get me wrong most relationships start out physical but they tend to progress into something more emotional and intellectual. You simply don't see that here. The only real thought she puts into the relationships between our two love interests are the negative sides to it. She never engages in the positives that are associated with either relationship with the exception of their physique. Either way I don't have high hopes for book 5, but I'm already this far in so I might as well finish it out.

Malific and Elizabeth reek havoc on Erin's life.

The ending is one hell of a shock & cliffhanger! I knew the person didn't like Erin but this blew me away. I just can't understand her reasoning. What happened to giving someone the benefit of the doubt? Or how about getting to know someone before you make assumptions. In this book Erin finds herself helping the vampires. Landon finds himself being blackmailed by a coven that has figured out how to grow Amber Crocus. It's supposed to kill vampires & be extinct. No one is supposed to know how to create it or care for it. Unfortunately, this coven is pretty greedy & refuse to lower the price. When someone else bids for it Erin is at a loss for what to do. When the Amber Crocus disappears Erin has no idea who did it. The answer is surprising. On top of all this Landon starts taking an interest in Erin, like she needs another suitor. Then toss in the fact that Elizabeth is just plain evil & hates Erin. If you ask me she's just as bad as Malific. Even though in Elizabeth's eyes she is doling out justice. She is seriously in a codependent relationship with her brother. Also Erin chooses a guy. Now we just have to see if it's the right one!

Erin though still torn, has made a choice, Mephisto , and Asher can see it , He just tells her that he wants her around and that if needed he will be there, and though she is leaving with M, she still feels her attraction to the Alpha. We find out that family is still sometimes your worse enemy and the story ends with Erin in bigger trouble.
I like the story line, it is different and has had some good twist, I do dislike that we are left hanging but still, it is a good read.

I found this one had more emotion than the other three, which which were also really great books.. The cliffhanger was enough to leave me pissed off terribly that book 5 isn’t available. I rarely read series that are not finished because I find it hard to pick the storyline back up and have the same intensity to read as when I read them back to back. Hopefully I’ll run across the next book and remember that Elizabeth is a bitch who needs to die horrifically as well as Malific. Erin is a remarkable character who has been dealt one hell of a hand. Yet still tries to do the right thing and stay strong in her desire to not become her mother. Nolan needs to grow a pair and realize his alliance needs to be with Erin and not Elizabeth. I want to know how everyone will react to what has happened to Erin and how to get her back. I really hope this won’t take a year to find out. I hate unfinished series!

Ok..... I'm on the fence with this one... the story line does get better with time and in relation to another individual's review.
I can also agree that it gets old when the main character Erin goes back and forth between The Alfa and M. . There are interesting parts that I enjoyed HOWEVER they came and went as Erin finds her way to figure out who she is and what her purpose Is.

I stuck with the series to see if it got better and really tried to give it a chance. it did get a lil better but on top of the constant wondering around trying to figure out what the main character was suppose to do, there's a cliffhanger at the end of book four!! UGH to the max)

I hate to say that I don't want to read the last book and thought I would FINALLY finished with the series. However...… I cant leave a series unfinished.

This is just my opinion and your experience may differ from mine.

What a trip! Erin’s life is totally adrenaline filled. Constant chaos! Her day to day is exhausting. Between a police officer determined to imprison her even if he had to invent the charges, to Mommy Dearest being a constant threat, witches who will sell their soul to demons for a book of spells, blood relatives who are the evilest of them all. She takes them all on and lives to tell about it. Finally she chooses between suitors and you are going to have to read the book to find our who she chooses and to find out the ending. Another McKenzie Hunter masterpiece and must read series.

The triangle breaks!

We've been patiently waiting and it's finally happened! The love triangle is broken and Erin has made her choice! 😍 After being tricked into a spell, Erin's life is now bound to the very person who's pulled out all the stops to try and kill her. Kinda puts a spanner in her works! 😂 That is, until she starts targeting Erin's friends and family instead. It's a race against the clock, that clock being a narcissistic, sociopathic gods' patience levels. And then that ending! Omg...it's seriously the author's most diabolical one yet! 😫 Prepare for impact, cause books and kindles all over the world are getting throw after this one! 🤣

Good

Aaron has definitely got herself into a lot of trouble in this book. At least she’s finally figured out which man she wants to have relations with. One of the things I like about the romance scenes in this book series is that they are short and sweet. Not a lot of explanation on the sex scenes. Just enough to give the reader the idea of what is going on but it doesn’t go into a ton of detail. I hope the next book is the last book in the series it’s getting kind of boring. Aaron needs to take care of her mother, the huntsman need to get back to the veil, and she needs to get back to her regular life or whatever is going to happen with her.

This series just keeps giving!!! I absolutely love Erin, in book one I thought what a unusual gift she has, and now we are on book 4 she is still completely surprising me. The supporting characters are perfect to complement her personality.. and the baddies make me want to kill them (we all want that). It’s so full of action. I absolutely love a dry sarcastic humour and Erin has that in spades.. it gave me all the feels from shouting at my kindle to being truly choked up for what she is feeling.. to laughing out loud like a crazy woman. I really can’t recommend this series enough.

This book has such amazing twist and turns that will keep you reading. Erin will have some many things happening to her. You will see just what Malific and Elizabeth are capable of. Her relationship with her father is slowly developing. You will also see her trying to figure out her feelings for Mephisto and Asher. You be hooked into this book from start to finish. There is so much in this book for everyone, you won't be disappointed at all. Highly recommend reading this book. I am not saying more as I am not going to spoil it.

This book was incredible! I love this series because each book gets better and better. Mckenzie Hunter does an amazing job developing her characters and that is why I get so sucked into the worlds she creates. Erin is courageous, snarky, funny, and brave as all get out. Some of the topics are difficult, dealing with family abandonment, sticking with your moral compass, keeping your optimism and it is well thought out and written. Keeps you rooting for Erin to win out and to get something good to happen in her life. Great job!

This is the thing I dislike about cliffhangers, I've finished everything that's available in the series, was left in the middle of a scene...well not really the middle but still...and now I have to wait for the next book to come out. I personally prefer for the characters to have a bit of a breather between saving the world or this major battle and the next one. You don't get that break with this series. There isn't really a "happy for now" ending, it's just the first step in the next battle. That being said, I'm enjoying the series and will continue with it as it's released.

Nothing is happening in the series. I skimp read last book and DNF this beyond 11%.

MC is shown as some badass but she comes across as spoilt brat.

I loathe love triangles when they are used to show the charming personality of MC. Another thing that bugs me is love triangle is often used to show the internal conflict of poor FMC. But if the same behaviour is shown by a male character then he becomes an a*****le. Double standards?

Did not finish this and nothing to recommend to continue the series.

Ridiculously Good!

This series is one of my favorites. The battle between mother and daughter leaves your guts churning. The battle between which hunk-a-love to choose leaves you breathless. The characters are full of fun, snark, dry humor, and yes, violence. My favorite quote of all time I'll now be stealing: "You're on a roll with bad ideas, so should we stop by the zoo so you can poke a bear?" Snort laughed at that line. This series is a must read!

Shadowmark:
Book 4 of the Raven cursed series

Shadowmark definitely does not disappoint!  I can't decide now which is my favorite in the series they're all so good. It seems like every time the next one comes out that becomes my favorite 😀 I love all the plot twists as well as Erin's sense of sarcastic humor. Once I started reading it was so fast-paced and intriguing I could not put the book down. Loved all the plot twist! Definitely recommend reading.
