Stephen Moss is a naturalist, broadcaster, television producer and author. In a distinguished career at the BBC Natural History Unit his credits included Springwatch, Birds Britannia and The Nature of Britain. His books include The Robin: A Biography, A Bird in the Bush, The Bumper Book of Nature, Wild Hares and Hummingbirds and Wild Kingdom. He is also Senior Lecturer in Nature and Travel Writing at Bath Spa University. Originally from London, he lives with his family on the Somerset Levels, and is President of the Somerset Wildlife Trust. He is a regular contributor to the Guardian.

Ļoti skaista grāmatiņa, kura vēsta par Lielbritānijas gulbju populācijas dzīvi cauri gadsimtiem. Ir pieminēti arī citu pasaules nostūru gulbji, bet tuvāk apskatīti tieši šie.
Grāmatā var tuvāk uzzināt kā augstmaņi savos piemājas dīķos turēja gulbjus ēšanai saviem mielastiem, par Temzas gulbju skaitīšanu un īpašumtiesību cīņām, gan arī ornitologu pētījumiem par šiem skaistajiem putniem, to attēlojumu mākslā, daudzajiem mītiem, kas tos apvij un arī COVID pandēmijas ietekmi uz gulbju populāciju.

Sen nebiju lasījis neko populārzinātnisku par putniem, tādēļ šī grāmata bija tieši laikā. Galvenais, ka ne pārāk bieza, jo ko gan biezu var uzrakstīt par gulbi, protams, ja tas nav kāds anatomijas atlass. Grāmata nudien ir par un ap gulbjiem, un lai visas gulbju lietas varētu ietilpināt šajā apjomā, tā ir vairāk orientēta tieši uz Lielbritānijas gulbjiem.

Stāsts par gulbjiem ir strukturēts kā gadalaika mijas cikls, viss sākas pavasarī un beidzas ziemā. Pamatu ielikšanai gan ir ielikta vesela pirmā nodaļa, kas saucas Gulbji. Gadījumā, ja atmetīsi grāmatai ar roku, tad vismaz izlasot pirmo nodaļu, jau varēsi justies kompetents tādos jautājumos kā melnais Gulbis, gulbju īpašumtiesības britu tiesu sistēmā, pāris labas gulbju pagatavošanas receptes un gulbju cenas viduslaiku tirgos.

Šeit jau nav tā, ka būtu tikai interesantas spekulācijas par un ap gulbju tēmu, kā piemēram viduslaikos gudri prāti aprēķinājuši, ka gulbis dzīvo ne vairāk ne mazāk kā 829 gadus. Kas ir loģiski, jo gulbis dzīvo trīsreiz ilgāk par zosi un tā trīsreiz ilgāk par cilvēku. Par to, kā kroga nosaukums Swan with two Necks patiesībā nenozīmē divkaklu gulbi, bet gan kādreiz esošu gulbju iezīmēšanas metodi, iegriežot viņam piederības zīmi knābī. Necks ir domāts Nicks. Daudz lapaspušu ir veltītas gulbju grūtajai dzīvei.

Visgrūtākais ir perēšanas laiks, tad cilvēki mīl zagt gulbju olas, tad gulbji sēž ligzdās un viņiem uzbrūk suņi. Ja parasti šādos gadījumos gulbis suni noslīcinātu, tad šeit viņš ir uz sauszemes. Varu iedomāties, kā pēc gadiem piecsimt, balstoties uz šo grāmatu, tiks runāts par konkrētu suņu uzbrukumu gulbim, kas citādi paliktu neviena neatminēts. Arī mazajam gulbēnam dzīve nav viegla, viņu var apēst jebkas, lai ar šis jau sver 220 gramus piedzimstot. Viņus ēd līdakas, dažādi ūdens kažokzvēri un arī viņi paši ir diezgan pārgalvīgi. Bet, ja izdzīvo pāris pirmos gadus, tad gulbis ir praktiski nemirstīgs vēl desmit gadus.

Daudz un dažādi ir apskatīta arī gulbju nozīme literatūrā un mākslā. Sākot no Zeva un Ledas sakara un beidzot ar Gulbju ezeru. Lai nebūtu bildes vien, tad autors bagātīgi aizraujas ar dzejas citēšanu, man šis mākslas veids nekad nav aizrāvis, tāpēc varu pateikt tikai to, ka tie te bija, bet lasījis neesmu.

Ja labi piestrādā, tad gulbi var arī pieradināt, un es te nerunāju par tādu pieradināšanu, kur gulbis pazvana zvaniņu un tu viņam iznes graudus. Bet par tādu, kur gulbis ar tevi ir tā sadraudzējies, ka velkas tev līdzi līdz pašai nāvei 40 gadus. Par tiem 40 gadiem zinātnieki strīdas, bet gadījumi, kad gulbis kļūst par cilvēka lieldraugu, nemaz nav tik reti. Daži kļūst par lieldraugu aŗī automašīnai ar siltu motora pārsegu.

Tiek aizskartas arī aktuāls temats - gulbju skaitam, kā jau lielākajai daļa no sugām, ir tendence samazināties. Galvenais vaininieks šim procesam izrādās ir skrotis un makšķerauklu svina atsvari. Tā lielākā daļa iet bojā no svina pārdozēšanas.

Kopumā laba maza grāmatiņa par gulbjiem - 8 no 10 ballēm. Ir pietiekoši izklaidējoša un, lai ar’ vietām ir pagarlaicīga, tā pa īstam no lasīšanas lasītāju neatturēs. Es izlasīju divos piegājienos, tiesa ar mēneša atstarpi starp piegājieniem.

I enjoyed the way we meandered from subject to subject, although some readers might find this irritating, but I think you can tell that this book was written quickly - sometimes a little bit disjointed or clunky as though it needed a final edit. Still a pleasure though because swans are marvellous birds

Liefdevol geschreven boekje over zwanen in Engeland: over hun gedrag en leven, over hun relatie met de mens, over hun rol in onze cultuur en kunst, over natuurbescherming en over onze maatschappij in het algemeen.
Het boekje leest makkelijk weg, is niet al te diepgaand (soms iets te oppervlakkig) maar met genoeg leuke weetjes. Het is een passievolle biografie, geen wetenschappelijke verhandeling. Maar na het lezen ga je zwanen toch iets anders bekijken en wil je meer weten over deze grote vogels. 🦢❤️

It’s well written, well researched and well thought out. As an academic or informative work it’s quite impressive. The writer should definitely be proud and anyone with an interest in birds should have this in their collection.

However, a page turner it ain’t. If you are hoping for a collection of fantastical anecdotes about these gracious birds or riveting stories which keep you yearning for more, then the book disappoints.
It’s more like a swan paddling along a waterway on a grey afternoon. Pretty, interesting, spellbinding even, but for most people not a spectacle which keeps you interested for a prolonged period of time.
