Psychic visions are tricky things - especially from a woman in a coma.
I find the murdered woman crumpled under a tree. Blood stains her back and her hands are bound. If I touch her, my psychic abilities will show me what happened to her. But I’ve lived through murders before and the visions leave scars. Fighting my fear, I touch her – and only see four names – Addlynn Jeanette Claire Margaret. The unmistakable cry of a newborn infant shatters the calm of the woods. Her body is wrapped around the tiny boy, impossibly small and fragile. I scoop up the screaming infant, and the woman moves to protect her son. She’s alive.
Alive, but in a coma - a complete mystery. The detectives, my brother and his handsome partner, desperately need information. I’m the only one who can communicate with the woman. Touching her hand in the hospital provides only snippets of her life. Terrifying snippets, like how she got the scar burned into the palm of her hand.
Visions are tricky things. The details float like smoke - lost in the haze. I can’t tell what she’s running from, but the woman’s terror burns inside me. I will find out who hurt her, and I won’t stop until I bring them to a fiery end.
Dawn Merriman lives in northeastern Indiana on a small pig farm with her husband and teenage children. She enjoys animals, auctions, reading, snorkeling and writing small town murder mystery novels. Dawn Merriman completed her first novel in Middle School and a few others in High School and college. She won 1st place in the Northeast Indiana Young Writers short story contest in 1990. After a writing hiatus to raise her children, she published her debut novel, "How Murder Saved My Life" in 2019.
A little time has passed since the events of Message in the Bones. The story opens with the perspective of a young woman trying to make an escape. She is bound and having contractions. I was immediately pulled into the story.
Gabby confesses to her grandmother, who she saw at the funeral as the two are gathering clothes for church donation. When Gabby and her grandmother’s dog take the clothes to the church, they make a discovery in the nearby woods. The tale that unfolds sees Gabby struggle with wanting to help and opposition from her brother and townsfolk. Determined to help this young woman, Gabby soon finds herself in danger.
The tale kept me engaged, and we learned more about Gabby’s tattoo and how it came to be. There is a religious aspect to the story, but it makes sense for the character and isn’t preachy. Grandma tries bringing her family together. I love this strong woman and she provided some important clues that helped not only Gabby but her brother.
So, as much as I like these books, they are also very frustrating. The main female character seems to vacillate between being smart and being really stupid.
I understand that authors try to make their characters as real as they can, but some of the things that a) go on in the characters head and b) what she does, just make no sense whatsoever.
As an author, I would also study up on police procedures, especially since they play a prominent roll in the main characters life. Having worked in the field as well as having family in the field and having been married to one, some if the things these guys do, would never happen. I know, I know, CHiP's showed us all sorts of things cop's never do either.
Anyway, I do want to see where a particular romance goes, so I'll be reading the next one for certain!
Sadly, I was disappointed in this second book. I was hoping for a bit more maturity from the McAllister siblings, but yet again, we get the same childish attitudes.
One is a psychic who has gone through some traumatic experiences but seriously, every decision she kept taking was like watching those terrible scary movies where the h does stupid things looking to get killed. That was gabby in this book. She was impulsive, and immature, and her sense of guilt and failure was frustrating me instead of making me empathize with her. Then there’s the detective brother who truly doesn’t do his job. Spoiler alert!! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
How can they not know there were so many missing kids in the surrounding towns? Gabby gave them so many clues! And it frustrated me to no end his incapability to think out of the box. Nope, don’t like him, don’t like his wife, don’t like anyone except for grandma Dot. Not even Lucas saved himself in this book.
Had such high hopes for this series. I’m gonna read the next one to see if these characters redeem themselves.
The author did a great job with continuity. Not too many issues with grammar and extra words. A couple. My current go to is psychic mysteries and while this was relatively light it satisfied. The action scenes were well written. There was a point deduction for the emotional immaturity of the main character. She isn't a teen and has had the ability for years. She isn't written that way. Had hopes she would have matured a little in this book but unfortunately she only seemed to get worse. Skipped quite a bit of her nonsense and read the fun stuff. The second point reduction was for her lack of common sense. Maybe it was suppose to be stubbornness but she just did too many stupid things for it to be stubborn.
I will continue to read them as long as they are on kindle unlimited. I would not pay for them unless our main character grows up a bit. Still have hope.
This would probably have been more consistent if written as a teenage character - it would be a decent read for teens.
We start this book following a girl as she is trying to escape for the sake of her unborn child. She has been stabbed and all she knows is she has to get to safety.
Gabby goes to her local church to donate her grandmother old clothes when the family dog runs into the forest and returns with underwear. Sensing something is wrong after touching them she follows the dog. in which she finds a girl huddled up under a tree, Gabby fear comes back but she touches her believing she has passed. However she then hears the cries of a baby. To her shock she then discovers the mum is barely alive. Working alongside her brother Dustin and his friend Lucas who are a part of the police force. They try to work out who this girl is and why this happened to her. With the help of Gabby special ability they are able to gather some key information from the girl whilst in a coma. However it's never a safe job being the village Psychic and it comes with risks. And Gabby very much finds herself at harm's way again. .
I always love reading these series as I love the idea of being able to touch bones or say a living person in a coma to gather information. Or like the first book see how they were unlived by touching their bones. Sadly not alot of people like this as we see in the book how some people are scared of her. However I think it's an awesome ability and would 100% be her friend. I can clearly see there is a romance building with Lucas but they are holding back. Maybe in another book or am I getting my hopes up? But if you like Psychic, spiritual type of books then I say it's for you.

Message in The Fire is the second book in the Messages of Murder series. A woman in a coma, a newborn baby, and a definite mystery that needs solving to unearth the hidden secrets. Wonderfully different characters and a solid storyline make for an interesting read. A creepy mystery with a paranormal twist – what’s not to love?!?! Looking forward to the next in this series.
This is the 2nd in the series about Gabby, who has psychic abilities. But because of this, most of the town thinks she is a freak and stays away from her. Her brother, Dustin, is a detective on the police force, along with his partner, Lucas. Lucas believes in Gabby and at times they do ask for her help in a murder investigation. But, unfortunately, Dustin just doesn't believe these abilities are real and chooses to ignore that she has them, so they really don't get along.
In this one, Gabby is heading over to the church to donate some clothing and along with her Grandma's dog, Jet, the find what they think is a body in the woods. Thinking that the women is dead, Gabby hears her moaning and discovers that she has just had a baby and is with her. Calling the police, they take the women and baby to the hospital. The unknown woman is in a coma and no one knows where she came from or who she is.
Lucas, trusting Gabby, learns from her three names that has come to her and they are trying to find out who she is. This one leads Gabby out on her own again, trying to find the secrets behind what happened to the woman and who is the father of the baby. In doing so, Gabby almost loses her life.
When Gabby finds an unconscious woman who has been stabbed, wrapped around her newborn child near her grandmother’s church, she doesn’t expect her to be alive, or to set her on a path where she is determined to discover the girl’s identity, and what happened to her. Using the gifts she has been given, Gabby finds herself knee deep in another mystery, and facing new dangers.
This book picks up a few weeks after the end of book one, and puts Gabby with a new mystery, and the same old tense relationships she has had with her brother and his partner Lucas. As Gabby tries to find the truth, she also tries to find out how she can work with her abilities, and with the people around her. She faces a lot of discrimination along the way, but tries to stay true to the guidance of her tattoo and her faith.
An entertaining paranormal mystery, this is a standalone mystery but not a standalone book. It builds upon the events found in book one, and has a few mysteries mentioned that are ongoing. This is a book that paranormal mystery fans will enjoy reading, with its hints of slow burn romance, ongoing mysteries, and a mystery completely resolved.
"Message in the Fire" largely relies on the premise that a small American town, where gossip is endemic, would be a good place to hide a cult. Also that, over the years, the police were completely unaware of the existence of the fenced-in property. A young woman is found unconscious in a wooded area - she's just given birth and the baby is still alive. They are found by Gabriella 'Gabby' McAllister - she can 'see' things through touch. It's a gift that has made her life difficult and dating impossible. Bit by bit Gabby works out the story of the woman and it leads to a dramatic climax and a moving ending. It's an interesting story with various subplots still to be explored - is Gabby's father dead? Is her mother falsely imprisoned? However, it doesn't quite hang together because of the somewhat simplistic writing. 3 Stars.
Messages of Murder by Dawn Merriman is a perfectly created literary universe.
Message in the Fire continues to follow Gabby, who, when she isn't taking orders at a catalog company, helps those whose voices have been silenced by tragedy. Gabby's power of seeing into the minds of those around her through touch and visions frightens some people and angers others. Very few see her talent as she does--as a gift from God. Despite repeatedly proving her worth, Gabby's reputation is smeared, and her property is vandalized. Still, she keeps doing what she knows is right.
When Gabby comes across a comatose teen who'd been forced to give birth, injured and alone in a churchyard, she saves the lives of mother and baby, then reaches through the veil to discover the young woman's secrets. Gabby is determined to find justice for the girl who can't fight for herself.
I read the first book a while ago and loved it. Just recently I found that this was a trilogy. I am so excited to read them. A broken family barely holding it together. A woman in the family that is psychic trying to help people and being harassed by the towns people. The strength that she shows against all the people that think she is crazy or faking it is amazing. The belief in goodness in people help her to overcome all of the ridicule they give her. The interactions that she has between everyone that doubt her is wonderfully well done. The author has done an amazing job with this book. I'm very impressed by her ability to draw you into the story and help you feel the emotions that she feels. Truly a gifted writer.
Messages in the Fire had such a dramatic start I thought at first it was Gabby that was in trouble. This one felt quite fast paced even though we were left without answers to many questions for quite a while.
I enjoyed Lucas and Gabby getting closer and how Grandma Dot is like the glue of the family. Especially that end chapter, it was perfect. I even warmed a little to Alexis!
A solid 4 stars again, although I believe the author states these can her read as stand alone and I do agree, the series is better enjoyed in order so I would recommend that. I think the whole series is Kindle Unlimited too. So if you subscribe free to read. These are quick reads but I'm really enjoying them!! Onto book three, Message in the Grave.
This book snags you from the first, few pages. Gabby is called to help a young mother who has just had her baby in the woods. The plot and mystery reveals something sinister going on near their town. The young mother is in a coma. The only answers are provided,, slowly through Gabby' s gift. However, she is not given full information, only bits and pieces. Her brother and most of the townspeople still do not believe in her gift. Gabby races against time to find out who the young mother is and where she came from. Gabby rushes headlong to unravel the mystery of the place the young mother may have come from, only to find herself caught in a trap that may prove to be fatal for her.
My rating – three stars. I agree with the other reviewers comments. I found the main character was emotionally stunted, and her brother was a jerk! The constant bickering back-and-forth between sibling, put me off. I was hoping that both of them might mature by the end of the novel, but that wasn’t happening. I found towards 3/4 of the book I was starting to skim over all the silliness and was just reading the good parts. I’m hoping in the next book Gabby does find some maturity and common sense. I enjoyed the first book, but this one was a bit of a disappointment. The story plot was good, but the bickering between the siblings and the emotional immaturity of the main character put me off. It would be a hard no if I had to pay money for this book.
This second book is very exciting. I'm happy that people are now starting to take positive notice about Gabby's psychic gift. Hopefully her internal thoughts won't be so depressing as the books go on because of this. This book has us dealing with a cult. Gabby finds a woman stabbed in the woods, having just given birth to a baby there. She is compelled to find out what happened to her and from there she is thrust in to using her gifts multiple times to read this woman in a coma. She certainly goes in to things blindly and so far, within 2 books, her life has been on the line quite a few times!
I really love these books. This is the second book that continues on from the last. Gabby is dating Preston but she isn't because she never manages to make time for him. She is still attracted to Lucas and Dustin her brother is still awful to her. She sees her father briefly and that bit of the story dies a death, although it gets mentioned. The cult and a girl who escapes is the main story and Gabby has to try and help, while getting very little support from anyone. Still she doesn't give up. It's a great story. Her romance with Preston doesn't get very far and ends before it really gets going, but we hold out hope for the real love with Lucas!
You are sucked in from the first chapter and you never let go until the very end. Gabby is once again on the hunt for a killer who seems to be in the business also for kidnapping. Can Gabby work out who it is with just her visions? I really am enjoying the development of Gabby as a character and can’t wait to see how much more she can grow to become the person she is meant to be. Very well written by Merriman, be interesting to see how many more books she writes about Gabby, quite a few I hope.
These books are good even if the heroine "Gabby" is childish and immature. In some aspects totally ignorant to others feelings. I got sick of reading about her self pity parties, so I skimmed some of that. All in all the book is good. I read the 1st one, and will continue to read them until the last one. They don't end in complete cliffhangers, but, do not answer all the questions either. Read them in order. Oh and the main hero is Lucas, he needs all the strength and patience he can with the childish acts Gabby does. Ugh. Yet, he is in love with her, go figure.
This is a pretty good series so far. The books are concise but take you on a journey at the same time. Some books get so caught up in the weeds that they are hard to finish. This book is the complete opposite. The author also does a great job with character development, and I can’t wait to read the next book to see what happens with Gabby and Lucas! Not to mention, Gabby is saving the world one mystery at a time! Check these books out! You won’t be disappointed!
The second book was as interesting as the first. Some aspects irritate me (maybe because I grew up with people who simply accepted whatever differences others had) the way people treat her and her gift for one. But all in all I am enjoying each tale as it unfolds, and unless I missed something the author is not overly obvious about the killer until it's nearing the end. I usually figure things out before the end so this is a factor I do enjoy. Onto the next with the hope the series continues to be good
I've had this in my TBR for an couple of months. It is a story that sucks you in. I had to stop reading for a few minutes to turn on the dryer and for some crazy reason I was tapping my kindle screen like I was trying to pause it, like it was a movie. That's what it was like, I was so drawn into the story I was seeing it so clearly in my mind. The characters are so real, you'll want to kick her brother in the leg. When you read on you'll understand. I didn't leave a comment on the first book because I had to get the next one.
I am so hooked on this series. I read this in one setting. I meant to get up and get a few things done but I just could not put this book down. It's like I just had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. I laughter, I almost cried, I screamed in fraustration (because Dawn writes too where you feel as if you are in the story) but I couldn't put it down until I finished it and now I'm going to read the next one.
This is the second book in a trilogy. I found it an amazing read. A Psychic, her disbelieving brother and his best friend (both police officers) investigate a case of a woman found in the woods, hands tied around her back and huddling around a newborn baby that is still attached to it's cord. No clues, what the psychic sees makes little sense. Missing children. A murder to bring it all to and edge. How can they solve this mystery and set things right.
Second book I’ve read form this series so far and it keeps getting better and better! For some reason, I don’t know how I feel about Preston yet. A part of me is like yes finally someone other than Lucas and grandma dot understands her and isn’t afraid of her abilities but the other part of me feels like it’s too convenient. So that part is something to look forward to in the next book of this series! Overall, very fantastic read!
I really had planned to sleep before reading this book. I didn't and now it's noon and I'm thinking of all the things I really should do. The book was so good though and she ended it in such a way that it's not a cliffhanger but still wonderfully set up the next book. I'm betting I can finish book 3 in this series before dinner. This series is amazing and Dawn Merriman is one of my new favorite authors.
Having read many reviews and having finished reading this book, I agree Gabby has yet to decide if she is a five year old, a bratty teen or an adult. She is alive in spite of being TSTL. However, I see a small bit of growth so have enough hope to try book three. Otherwise, the idea of Gabby helping others using her psychic gift (in spite of many personal challenges) and an underlying belief in a loving God makes for an interesting read.
Its almost like watching a tv series. The only bad thing is I can't get anything done because I want to keep reading.Gabby is a psychic who finds herself in another mystery to solve along with her brother the detective and his detective friend.Good writing skills. So refreshing to read a book not filled chapter to chapter of smex, repetition or overly descriptive words to just fill pages.Highly recommend.
This book is the second book in the Messages of Murder series. It’s really good, the writing is brilliant and the storylines are very intense. I’m not a big fan of her brother Dustin. I hope he gets better. Her grandmother is amazing and I hope that a relationship between her and Lucas develop. I am a little uncomfortable with the fact she always seems to go into situations by herself, I hope she findfinds someone she can trust.
