Der Charmante Marquess

Rate this book

INTERESTING, EXCITING HEROINE PULLS THIS BOOK THROUGH 💪

This book had some original things that I was really fond of, but it also had some things that I have seen too often in Historical Romance. So all in all, it was a good book but not a great book.

👍 WHAT I LIKED 👍

Phoebe: The female lead was super interesting and original because she was truly independent and cared nothing for society norms. She was a self-proclaimed spinster, had left a guy at the altar and lived by herself and by her own means. That was something I had never encountered in an HR book before and I really enjoyed it.

👎 WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE 👎

Plot: Most HR are the same when it comes to the plot - emphasis is on the romance, everything else is secondary. This book was no different. The romance was definitely the primary plotline and the mystery of Marcus' cousin was the far inferior plot, which hadn't been evolved enough to actually be interesting or captivating.

Marcus Raleigh, Marquess of Ripley is a well-known rake in London. He has no desire to marry or have a relationship (have to say wasn't very keen on him frequenting brothels as much as he seemed to). Marcus is a man of honour, so when he realises his estranged cousin is swindling members o the Ton he sets about stopping him.

Phoebe Lennox is a member of the Spitfire Society, a woman happy to have her independence, thanks to an inheritance from her aunt. She can live as she wishes to, much to the disapproval and concern of her parents. Having jilted her toad of a fiancé at the alter, her connections ensure she isn't shunned by the Ton, even as many of the Ton whisper about her (this contour of the tale does require reality to be left at the door).

Phoebe and Marcus from the get go find themselves drawn to one another. It's not long before, at her request, Marcus shows Phoebe the thrill of intimacy. What neither count on is the desire that burns them to lead to more intimate and deeper feelings. As they grow closer Marcus continues to look into the shady dealings of his cousin and finds himself under threat of being charged for a crime he did not commit.

Overall an entertaining and light read. This may be part of a series but it can be read comfortably as a standalone.

'Notorious rake Marcus Raleigh, Marquess of Ripley, is gracing the gossip pages for a new reason: the rumors he may have murdered his swindling cousin. His quest for answers regarding his cousin’s death leads him to an incomparable self-declared spinster, and he is—for the first time—beguiled beyond reason. Neither is what the other wants, and yet their intense mutual infatuation is inescapable.

After abandoning her philandering betrothed at the altar, Phoebe Lennox fled from London only to return an heiress who refuses to follow the ton’s rules. She won’t risk a relationship of any kind—until she meets the notorious Marquess of Ripley. Swept into his seductive embrace, her resolve falters in the face of a pleasure she never anticipated. But when the truth about Marcus and the murder come to light, Phoebe could lose everything she holds dear, including a love for all time.'

A Duke is Never Enough is the second book in Darcy Burke's The Spitfire Society series. I have not read the first in the series, Never Have I Ever With a Duke but after reading this book I will definitely be going back to read it. Not only is there romance, there is also a bit of danger and mystery. My favorite kind of book.

When the book starts, Marcus doesn't come across as the greatest guy. He is fighting to stop his cousin from swindling money out of unsuspecting members of the peerage, but he also comes across as quite a womanizer. I was prepared not to like him very much, but he turned out to be such a great character. He is generous and kind, always taking care of those around him.

Phoebe admittedly had a bit of a modern approach on life for a woman of her time, but there's nothing wrong with that. A woman with her wealth of funds could forge her own independence and I really liked her for it. Her bravery in jilting her fiancé, establishing her own independence, and going after what she wants earned my respect. Phoebe, like Marcus, also takes care of those around her and is such a great character. They're so great togther and I really enjoyed reading about them and their HEA.

A Duke is Never Enough is not the first book I have read by Darcy Burke, but it is the first in this series that I've read. I will be going back to read the previous book in this series and look forward to the next one in May, A Duke Will Never Do This is not a clean romance. There are several intimate scenes, but they are well written. I adored reading this book and if you like historical romance, I recommend A Duke is Never Enough to you.

The spinster and the rake

Phoebe Lennox deserted her betrothed at the altar and set the society gossips and London's ton on its collective ear. Gossips had a hey day and Phoebe thanked her lucky stars that she'd had enough gumption to not take that final step that would've left her shackled to a husband who delighted in inflicting pain. Society was even more shocked when she set up house by herself.
Marcus Raleigh, Marquess of Ripley, draws a different sort of attention. A rake and a womanizer, although to be fair, he drew the line at some actions.
So when Marcus discovered his cousin had been actively swindling gullible ton members with dubious investments, he confronts Drobbit in the park, resulting in fisticuffs. Enter Phoebe who helps Marcus clean some blood of his face. That's their beginnings. Drobbit later turns up dead. No-one is surprised. Except Marcus and Phoebe, as Marcus is now a suspect in a murder case.
(I must say the name Drobbit conjures up an unsavory Dicken's type character, and the alliteration unfortunately sent me straight to Dobby from Harry Potter. But that's unfair to Dobby. I love Dobby whereas Drobbit is a slimey , unprincipled character skirting the edges of the ton.)
Putting that aside we have a couple who aren't (indeed shockingly aren't!) following society's rules, a relationship that builds via simple respect and understanding (friendship) with lustful interludes, disgruntled investors, a murdered Marquess' cousin, and a messy situation.
Although I enjoyed Phoebe's and Marcus' developing relationship, and Phoebe's bold move to independence, the investment scheme and surrounding mystery just seemed muddy and unresolved me.

Series: The Spitfire Society #2
Publication Date: 2/25/20
Number of Pages: 250

Marcus Raleigh, Marquess of Ripley, is happy – very happy – with his life. He is a totally unrepentant rake. He has a few good friends and as many bedmates as he wants – and he doesn’t spend more than a night with any of them. He doesn’t keep a mistress because – well – even that is a commitment of sorts. Then, he confronts his only relative, a cousin who has been defrauding people, in the middle of Hyde Park where there are many, many witnesses. Fisticuffs ensue and Marcus ends up bleeding. As he pauses in a quiet area to wipe the blood from his face, he is approached by a young woman who offers to tend his wound. She’s beautiful! He is intrigued, but she won’t give him her name or where she lives. Since she used her handkerchief to tend his wound, he takes it and promises to have it laundered, and he promises to return it to her on the morrow.

Phoebe Lennox is a lovely young woman who owns her own home, makes her own investments, lives alone, and handles her own money. She also jilted her betrothed at the altar without complete social ruin. She is a totally independent woman and a self-declared spinster who has no intention of ever needing a man in her life. (Yes, I know most of those things were impossible for women in that period - some even unlawful.) As she was riding in Hyde Park one day, she saw a man get injured in an altercation and went to assist him. He was none other than the notorious rake, Marcus Raleigh. She tended his wounds, declined his request for a kiss, and refused to tell him her name and location. He told her he’d find her and return her handkerchief to her on the morrow – but she was sure that wouldn’t happen – he couldn’t find her – how could he.

Well, never fear, the intrepid Marcus is so good that he showed up at her home that very afternoon. It didn’t take long for them to become friends and appreciate that neither of them desired a romantic relationship, but friendship was a good thing. Many things happened as they got to know each other and secrets were revealed. Marcus was also trying to find his cousin to stop his larcenous activities. When the cousin turned up dead, Marcus was the top suspect – and he wasn’t defending himself. Why not?

It is a steamy story with a hard-won HEA. I loved Marcus from page one, but Phoebe didn’t resonate as well. I came to like her, but not love her. I loved the story. It was well-written, nicely paced, and well-plotted – but it is another example of what is really a contemporary, politically correct story dressed up in period clothes.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Phoebe had done exactly that, and she wanted to do it again. She wanted more of tonight. More kissing. More Marcus. Smiling to herself as the fireworks concluded , she let her joy fly free. She’d never felt more alive.

For a historical romance, the plot was good but the author focused too much on the romance and I would have enjoyed if it wasn't more focused on the romance. It was too cheesy for me here. I was bored most of the part.

Phoebe is a remarkable character. Big applause to the author for that. I enjoy reading about strong, independent women.

Marcus is the most usual hero we encounter in most romance books. There wasn't anything extraordinary about him.

There was a bit of excitement who killed Marcus's cousin but it was predictable within chapter. Overall, It was an okay book, nothing extraordinary.

💋💋

A sensual , passionate and emotional adventure that has a wonderfully satisfying ending.

Our tough and feisty female is Phoebe, she a wonderful character full of grit and determination.
Our gent is Marquess Marcus Ripley , he’s a ladies man and loves nothing more than his dissolute lifestyle.

The two of them begin a friendship that grows an attraction, that evolves into a love that is beautiful to read about.

It’s an enjoyable experience to visit this world of Darcy’s and I cant wait for the next one.

Blurb :

Notorious rake Marcus Raleigh, Marquess of Ripley, is gracing the gossip pages for a new reason: the rumors he may have murdered his swindling cousin. His quest for answers regarding his cousin’s death leads him to an incomparable self-declared spinster, and he is—for the first time—beguiled beyond reason. My review :

Will a determined spinster meets the man who makes her rethink all she knew about rakes ...

I was curious about Phoebe since the previous installment. The path she has chosen is very modern and I even wonder how she can fully live it as even after reaching the age of reason, a woman had still no right, not even to manage her own money without a man’s interference.

This said it was a fun and entertains read.
Marcus is far from being the libertine everyone sees in him. He has a heart and despite hiding him, he never let a friend down.
Why he was caught fighting in the open with his swindler of a cousin.
Upon meeting Phoebe, he is intrigued by this woman living nearly as free as a man, and refusing his advance with grace. When they engage in a wager about who will kiss the other first.
He is such a considerate man, listening and never going against his interlocutor’s will. Outside his woo to never marry, he is quite a catch if people might overlook his roguish way.
But society asks for pristine reputation, so he is saved because he is a man.
But Phoebe paid the price of her rebellion, jilting her former betrothed at the altar drove her to the fringe of her circle of acquaintances.
Still she lives a life of exceptional freedom, seeming to be accountable to noone. So once she let go of her own restrictions, she opens herself to new experiences, rather improbable for a woman of her time to enjoy as an unmarried woman.
She is fun and strong, kind and caring but so very in advance for her time ( see the talk about pregnancy prevention )

It is a charming and enjoyable 4.5 stars read with a lovable hero and a determined heroine to set her own pace and path.

I was granted an advance copy by the author, I had long ago preordered mine.
Here is my true and unbiased opinion.

A Duke is Never Enough features a fantastic romance between a woman determined to forge her own path and a notorious rake caught up in a family scandal.

After refusing to marry an unfaithful man, Phoebe Lennox flees London leaving the philanderer at the altar. When she returns, it’s as an heiress who refuses to bow to society’s demands. Phoebe has no interest in any relationship that would hinder her freedom, but when she meets Marcus Raleigh, the charming Marquess of Ripley, she finds herself tempted to throw caution to the wind. But as things heat up between the two, Marcus finds himself embroiled in scandal when his thieving cousin is murdered and he is considered the prime suspect. With time running out to find the real killer, Phoebe and Marcus are in a race against the clock before their chance at a future disappears.

Phoebe and Marcus’s relationship is initially built on their mutual attraction but due to some bad experiences in Phoebe’s past, things progress fairly slowly between them. I didn’t mind the slow burn aspect of their romance though as it provided the pair the time needed to get to know one another and form a deeper connection. Their relationship is filled with banter and I loved watching them slowly fall for each other despite their determination not to enter into a relationship. I also really enjoyed the friendship the pair developed over the course of getting to know one another. I particularly loved that Marcus understood Phoebe’s hesitations and that he put the decision in her hands on when their romance would progress further. Once things do advance physically, it’s very well done with just the right amount of steaminess and some excellent scenes.

The plot surrounding the murder of Marcus’s cousin was very interesting, but I will say the blurb is a bit misleading as the murder does not occur until over halfway into the book. Prior to the murder, Marcus was working on tracking his cousin down with the occasional assistance from Phoebe. I enjoyed the hunt for his cousin but I will say knowing ahead of time he would be murdered did take a bit of the suspense out of it.

Overall I really enjoyed A Duke is Never Enough and I am looking forward to the release of the third book in the series, A Duke Will Never Do.

I’m not always the biggest fan of the whole redeemed rake trope, but I really liked Marcus despite his less than stellar reputation. He was a very sweet guy and was very understanding and patient with Phoebe. I didn’t necessarily find her to be a spitfire, but I liked her a lot anyway. I really liked that she didn’t let her parents push her around as so many historical romance heroines are wont to do.

Th biggest chunk of the action happens near the end of the book, but this did not take away from the rest of the title. There was still plenty going on to keep my attention. Watching Marcus and Phoebe’s relationship progress was delightful. I was afraid at the very beginning that insta-lust was going to ruin the book, but Marcus and Phoebe moved their relationship along at a nice, even pace.

I can’t wait for Anthony and Jane’s story!!

Oh. My. God. I loved it. Right from the very first page I was in love. I was in love with he hero and the heroine and the story. Guys, I stayed up waaaaay too late last night reading this.

I loved Marcus, how caring and kind and thoughtful he was. And I loved Phoebe, how in spite of some bad stuff that happened to her, she wanted to take control of her life and body and how they ultimately came together, oh my heart completely melted. This really is one of the sweetest novels I read in a long time.

I feel like I have to point out, that the story is very modern, not something you typically find in HR, but I like to believe that it could happen.

This story left me in such a good mood, I'm riding a book high and I'm very happy reader now. Can't wait for the next book to come out.

A Duke is Never Enough is the second book in The Spitfire Society series by Darcy Burke and it can be read as stand-alone. I have to say that I enjoyed this book way more than I liked the first in the series, so for me, it's ok to skip the first book and dive into this one. All the issues I had with the first book (namely, that I felt like I was reading contemporary romance instead of historical) we not present in this book and I was able to enjoy it.

Phoebe (our heroine) puts the Spitfire in the Spitfire Society. She's got money and doesn't care about what the Ton has to say about her and I couldn't help but like that kind of attitude. Marcus was a great character too, but his lady stole the spotlight. Let's be honest, we expect the hero of the novel to do the right thing or what thinks is the right thing and that's what Marcus did. Or he thought he did.

I liked the mystery aspect of the book. As the blurb reveals, there is a murder and I enjoyed reading that plotline. It made the book even better and the events had a nice twist to them. Overall, I liked the book a lot and I would recommend it!

I loved Phoebe and Marcus! This had many familiar elements that I love about historical romance and yet it felt like a breath of fresh air.

The women of The Spitfire Society series seem like people that I could become friends with and the world that Darcy Burke created is such an interesting one. I love the idea of female characters breaking stereotypes thrust upon them within the confines of society, or, on literature level - a genre. So like I mentioned before, this book felt very refreshing and I loved seeing Phoebe being bold in her quest for independence and the right to live the life SHE wanted.

Marcus, who had been a side character in the first installment of this series, was also a nice surprise. I always appreciate a hero who is a goner for his love right from the beginning. More than that, in this story we got to glimpse underneath the rakish surface and see all the layers below. It turned out Marcus was more than a libertine (and a good friend) we'd come to know in "Never Have I Ever With a Duke" and he's noble, loyal and honest as well as generous and considerate. I particularly liked how mindful he was in making sure that Phoebe was comfortable in his presence and that she was okay with everything they were doing.

All in all, I found him extremely likeable.

The romance between Phoebe and Marcus, which started off with a nice meet cute and progressed to (unlikely) friendship (which in turn progressed naturally to an affair), was extremely satisfactory. I thought they had great chemistry and their scenes together were just a delight to read.

To sum up, "A Duke is Never Enough" is a book of good pacing, great female friendships, romance woven with a bit of mystery crime and feels. I cannot wait for the final book of this series and I'll be definitely paying more attention to Darcy Burke's writing from now on - her brand of historical romance fits just right for me.

A Duke is Never Enough by Darcy Burke is book Two in The Spitfire Society Series. This is the story of Phoebe Lennox and Marcus Raleigh, Marquess of Ripley. I have read the previous book, but feel this could be a standalone book if you wish to do so.
Marcus is a carefree person enjoying a new women any time he wants and has a few good friends. But when he confronts his cousin a fight in public happens. Then later he is thought to have done is cousin in which leads him to look into what happened to his cousin. Phoebe walked away from an engagement to become a successful happy spinster. But then she comes to help Marcus have he was injured during the fight with his cousin. Phoebe doesn't give him her name but he ends up finding her and they become friends of sort. They end up working together to solve the mystery which of course has their feeling growing into more.

Personally , I was really interested when I read the Blurb : I mean an independent heroine in a historical romance novel with a little of mystery !! Sounds Really Cool !

But Unfortunately , I didn't like it that much .

The Writing style was very good , as well the plot, but I was expecting something different from the " Usual "  Historical Romance scenes and characters .

Simply , there was nothing new or unique .

To keep it short , If you love reading historical romance , you will definitely like this one .

But If you are searching for something different , you won't find this book interesting .

** I've read this novel without reading the previous book in the series , and didn't find any difficulty in catching up with the story .

Here we go. Darcy Burke amazed me with her book, A Duke is Never Enough. The book gripped me from the beginning with the instant passion that sparks between Marcus and Phoebe. Wow! The love scenes were very steamy and hot!
The details and the imagination that went into the writing of those scenes put me right in the room with them. I felt naughty just reading them. I was excited to read more of it though. I wanted more of those scenes through out the book. The introduction of different characters was great.
You didn’t lose the interest of the book as this happened. The crime and mystery played a great part int the book. Both the romance and crime/ mystery played well hand and hand. The book had an easy flow and didn’t bore me one bit. My only wish though is that scenes of the book could have taken place in other rooms rather then predominantly in Phoebe’s garden room.
My fellow readers, this book has my recommendation as a must read.

A twist on the enemies to lovers trope - friends to lovers. Marcus Raleigh, Marquess of Ripley is a rake who plans to never have any kind of lasting relationship with a woman. Phoebe Lennox, is an unconventional lady, who plans to never marry, and to prove her point she has started the Spitfire Society for ladies of a like mind. Finding their attraction is something that can't be ignored, they try friendship first. Even this is a stretch and something new for both of them. Family troubles, on both sides, get in the way, and may ruin their new relationship. Marcus may be a rake, but he is honourable, and a good friend to his mates. Phoebe is definitely different than the typical lady of the times, but not unbelievable. I enjoyed their journey very much. This book is part of a series, but could be read as a standalone, but I recommend the first book in this series as well as the Untouchable series, as characters from both play a part in this story.

3.5 stars rounded up.

Marcus Raleigh, the Marquess of Ripley is no stranger to scandal, an unrepentant rake he doesn’t really care what society thinks of him and his sexual escapades, but when it becomes clear that his cousin is running an investment scam and is cheating people, he will not stand by and let his family name be dragged through the mud. He confronts his cousin in Hyde Park and a physical altercation ensues which leaves him with a cut when his cousin throws a rock at him before running away and if that was not bad enough, the entire scene is witnessed by many members of the ton. Angry that he let his emotions get the better of him, Marcus rides away and finds a secluded place to collect himself and tend his wound. But his solace is interrupted by the arrival of a woman, a woman who tends his wound and flirts, yet will not give him her name. Intrigued by her, he vows to find her, she just laughs and rides away.

Phoebe Lennox is a spinster by choice, she jilted her fiancé at the altar on their wedding day and has reveled in her ruination, thanks to a fortune left to her by her aunt, Phoebe has the means to live as an independent woman. She defies accepted societal protocols and has moved out of her parents home and lives alone. After her experience with her former betrothed, Phoebe has pretty much sworn off men and has no desire to marry. So much to her surprise, her interaction with Marcus in the park sparked something in her – something she thought was long dead – desire. She tells herself that she is better off without a man and especially a man with a reputation like Marcus’ , but even telling herself all this isn’t enough to douse her interest in him, so it is a good thing she didn’t tell him who she is, because nothing good could come from it.

But Marcus is resourceful and finds her by showing his friend Colton a drawing he did of her and learns her name and where she lives. He walks to her neighborhood and by chance spots her entering her house. He surprises her by paying a call and flirting outrageously with her. She is impressed that he found her, but shuts him down when he suggests a kiss. He is not deterred and proposes a wager – that she will ask him for a kiss – if he loses he will donate to her favorite charity. She agrees and is sure she will win. Later Marcus meets with a runner to find his wayward cousin and hopes that he can be found before he scams anyone else. He then turns his attention to planning a masked ball for his friend Graham and his soon-to-be bride, a ball he hopes will give him the opportunity to explore his attraction to Miss Phoebe Lennox.

He and Phoebe embark on a friendship, which transitions to lovers and just when it seems like things might be heading in a more permanent direction and HEA could be in their future, Marcus’ cousin turns up dead and Marcus is the prime suspect. Marcus believes he knows who the killer is and will not fight his arrest to protect them. But Marcus’ misguided attempt to be noble may very well cost him not only his HEA but it could cost his him life!

This was a very well written, fast paced, entertaining story with likeable characters, steamy love scenes and an ending that was more than a little surprising. I loved Marcus, he really is a rake with a heart of gold. I had a harder time warming up to Phoebe’s character, she seemed like a 21st century woman transported back in time to Regency England - I am not picking on Ms. Burke, this kind of characterization is unfortunately is becoming the norm in this genre, sigh. Also I can't help but wonder - Where's the Duke?? Overall, I enjoyed the story and I am looking forward to reading Jane’s story!

Loving The Spitfire Society books. Darcy knows how to write regency romance. This book, I think, is her steamiest book that I've read. I fly through her books. I've purchased and read many of her backlist to keep me from withdrawals.

Can’t wait for Jane and Anthony’s story The Duke of Distraction May 2020

A Duke is Never Enough is the second book in The Spitfire Society series by Darcy Burke. It can easily be read as a standalone book, but if you haven't read the first one I can definitely recommend it, I loved it just as much as I loved this one. Darcy Burke is definitely one of my favourite authors and her books never disappoint.

Marcus Raleigh, Marquess of Ripley is a known rake in London. He enjoys a good time and he enjoys women. He doesn't want to marry and he doesn't keep a mistress but he's not averse to visiting a local brothel when the need arises. He may have a rake's reputation but one thing he doesn't let pass him by is people taking advantage of and swindling other people, especially if the swindler is his cousin. After a contretemps with said cousin in a very public park, Marcus moves to a quieter area of the park to tend his wounds. It is where he first meets Phoebe Lennox. She offers to clean up his blood and he is mesmerised by her. They part with her not having told him who she is but with the wager that he wouldn't be able to find out. He sets out to prove her wrong and he does just that.

Phoebe is a member of the Spitfire Society, a woman happy to have her independence, living her life as she wants and with no intention to marry. Her one attempt at pleasing her parents by marrying went awry when she jilts the man at the altar. She has very good reason to do that but even if people would listen she would still find herself the centre of scandal. It became the perfect opportunity to acknowledge her desire to be a spitfire and she enjoys the freedom she has because of it. It also helps that a rich aunty left her a lot of money enabling Phoebe to buy her own home and live in comfort.

Phoebe and Marcus are instantly attracted to each other and are equally intrigued by each other. It isn't long before at her request Marcus shows her the thrill of intimacy. A thrill that she hadn't experienced before. They both know that the other has no intention of marrying and are happy to have their secret liaisons.

While their affair continues Marcus is still keen on finding and stopping his cousin from swindling and that brings a darker suspenseful element to the story especially when said cousin is found dead and Marcus is the main suspect. Of course, he isn't the murderer and happily, I didn't figure out who it actually was until the author revealed it.

I loved the passion between Marcus and Phoebe and not just the steamy bedroom scenes they had, but the passionate nature of their relationship. Their feelings for each other went far past that of just the physical even if they didn't realise it.

The suspense of the story kept me intrigued right up to the end, and the epilogue was just perfect for all those that had been affected by Marcus' cousin and cohorts. Also, of course, for Marcus and Phoebe. I really enjoyed their romance. I enjoyed the whole book and am very happy to recommend it.

A tantalizing tale that you will fall in love with after the first few pages.
"He adjusted his position so that he could look at her. His dark, seductive gaze bored into hers.
"I wonder if I might kiss you."
Again her body threatened to betray her and move toward him. "No, I shouldn't want that."
"An interesting choice of words." His lips spread into a sly smile.
"I don't want that."
He tipped his head slightly .."I'm not sure that's true.. There will come a day--soon, I'd wager--when you'll ask me to."
Phoebe, proclaimed spinster and proud of being independent had met her match in Marcus, Marquess of Ripley and renowned rake. But he definately stirred something in her. Marcus had thought about her since she had stopped to help him in the park with his head wound. Yes, you will need to see what happened! He thought she was beautiful, but there was something more...
But Marcus has a lot on his mind. He swindling cousin who had been taking money from members of the ton had to be stopped and give restitution to those he had harmed. Unfortunately his cousin suddenly comes up dead and Marcus is the main suspect!
Can he and Phoebe's sizzling attraction sustain as the mystery unfolds about the murder?
Darcy Burke is one of my go to authors because I know everything she writes will entertain and be a keeper!! I am loving this series!!

Phoebe Lennox has decided that she wants to live an independent life, now she has the inheritance to allow her to do so. Due to an event in the park, she comes to the aid of Marcus, Marquess of Ripley. Marcus has the reputation of a rake, he never wants a permanent relationship and prefers to flit from one to another. They have an instant attraction and become friends, could this develop into something more lasting, given how they both feel about being independent? Marcus is also trying to discover who his cousin has swindled so he can restore their money. This is a steamy and entertaining read. I liked the characters of Phoebe and Marcus, they were both strong people but they also had a caring side. I look forward to reading the next in the series. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

So we are back at the Ton, I so know that I could not have lived around that time I would have been gossipped about so much. Anywho so we meet Phoebe and I have to say, I liked her, she stood up for herself and left her stupid fiance not caring that the Ton would criticize or gossip or whatever it is that they would do. But luckily for her she ends up getting money from an aunt and can now return and live how she wants. Good for her! Then we have Marcus, who also did not care or would succumb to the ton, only thing that bugged me was all the time he spent in the brothels, I don't understand how these people didn't get a lot of STD's, well I guess we don't for the books we read. So these two meet, Marcus is determined to confront his cousin on swindling people, so you have to give it to him to be honorable enough to care. As they spend time together there feelings on never wanted a relationship starts changing, Marcus's way sooner than Phoebe..Who will be next?, Doesn't matter I will be reading it.

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

In A Duke is Never Enough, Phoebe Lennox, now notorious for refusing to marry her betrothed, is living a somewhat life of luxury as the heiress of a late relative, away from her parents, and with no plans to marry. A lot of people have given her the cut, but she's happy with the life she has. When she comes across Marcus Raleigh, Marquess of Ripley, bleeding after an argument in the park, she is immediately drawn to him, as he is to her. Marcus is a notorious rake, but hates swindlers, and his cousin is the biggest one. After discovering his cousin fleeced a lot of the great and the good, he needs to find him, and get the money back - money that even Phoebe's own father lost. Both Marcus and Phoebe join forces, denying their attractions, and strive to find Drobbit to recover the funds. However, when he turns up dead, and Marcus is immediately blamed, now they need to save Marcus from the noose, and discover who actually killed his wayward cousin.

Phoebe is one of the best heroines I've read in a long time. After being treated horrendously by her fiancee before the wedding, she jilts him because facing a life with him is unimaginable. That's left her on the fringes of society, but she's a self proclaimed spinster, and happy to be so. Her parents don't understand it, and especially when they fall into financial problems, they urge her to marry, but she won't. She's intrigued by Marcus, and happy to have some fun with him, but doesn't expect anything more, especially knowing his reputation. Marcus is very much the same - he has no plans to settle, but likes Phoebe, and enjoys her company. Being with her, and having her help him with his investigation makes him start to change his mind, and he needs to woo her - which was definitely swoony. The plot line was enjoyable, especially the mystery and investigation over Drobbit's disappearance and later death, and I liked how this showed both character's appreciation and respect for the other, rather than it being wholly about the romance. My only issue with the book is the title, A Duke is Never Enough, when Marcus was a Marquess, and not a duke - but that's just me being pedantic. I definitely will be reading more of this author in future.

I have a good friend who really enjoys historical/regency era romances and has read some of this author's work. I decided to give this one a try. It's the second book in the Spitfire Society trilogy. I read this without reading the first. It served well as a standalone as well.

As for the book itself, I really enjoyed it. I liked the aspect of Phoebe taking her own role when that isnt necessarily the norm. She has a good heart and you can really tell from her initial arrival in the book.

Marcus is a great alpha male who is determined to spend his life alone. Clearly we know going into the book that this would be not be the case, but it sure was fun to unravel the story and she the happily ever after.

Thank you Darcy Burke and Netgalley for the ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I read the first book in the series and I liked this one a little bit more.

I love it when intimidating heroes are soft for heroines and this is that in a nutshell. The heroine is no slouch either, having abandoned an ex-fiance at the altar (two: described sexual assault) and is rich and ready to be free of marriage. What are the chances that she "befriend" a rake who is not interested in marriage either?

It's fun and then the story gets serious, bringing back a suspenseful mystery thread from the first book. That's ok but it wraps up fairly easily, eh.

Part of me balks at how quickly the heroine goes from her trauma to romance-ready but she is the one taking initiative the whole time so just be ready for that.

This book focussed on Phoebe Lennox, self confirmed spinster of independent means. Having abandoned her husband to be at the alter for being horrible she has been rejected by society. She meets Lord Ripley after he's had a dispute with his cousin. The pair find they have far more in common than just an instant attraction to each other. Their stories become intertwined as a consequence of financial matters and criminal activity.

There is quite a bit if sexual activity in this book. Phoebe wants Lord Ripley to show her how to enjoy sex - which he does with great enthusiasm! Of course, this isn't going to be what all readers are looking for. Despite being set in London, the language has an Anericam feel at times with done American expression. This is a book that is very predictable... which is fine but I think we lose the sense of difficulty Phoebe has as a spinster which is supposed to be a central theme of this book. This author has also clearly done some research about the contraception of the time and let's us know this by telling us the same thing about sponges and French letters over and over again!Annoying!

This is a good, easy read. Its predictable, it's not perfect but it's good fun and an enjoyable read.

I received a copy of this book for free via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

What do you get when you cross a spinster with a rakehell? An un-put-downable story with emotion and humor and quirky unconventional characters you can’t help but fall in love with.
Marcus Raleigh, Marquess of Ripley and Phoebe Lennox were both content with their reputations. He as a libertine and she as a self-declared spinster. Both shared a poor opinion of marriage and both were content with their solitary lives. But when thrown together while Marcus is hunting down his swindling cousin, the heat between them is instant. A friendship quickly forms between these two unmarried people who share a common outlook. While Phoebe, who recently left her blackguard fiancé at the altar, is determined to embrace spinsterhood, she can’t resist the easy way Marcus made her laugh and flirt. And for Marcus, who had prided himself for having no attachments, he soon found himself thrilled by the most mundane things- picnics, curricle rides, and friendly wagers. Anything to stay in Phoebe’s orbit. Moving beyond friendship would be awkward. Especially when things ended, as they would inevitably do. But when Phoebe decides to take advantage of her spinsterhood status and proposes an affair, Marcus can’t refuse. He preferred his liasons tidy and short but as their interactions progress, something deeper begins to take place and neither wants to walk away. But when people and events from their past intertwine their lives even more, the decision to end the affair may be taken from them.
I loved these two characters. Darcy Burke has a real talent for creating romances brimming with such great sexual tension that no matter how determined the two characters are to remain single, you can see how perfect they are for each other. I adored the subtle humor between these two. Their matchless banter. The humor that hinged on naughty. Marcus’ tutelage in passion was absolutely titillating. And I couldn’t help but giggle at Phoebe’s extensive research prior to their affair. Every encounter between them was sexy and fun.
I’ve loved this series from the first and while this book can be read as a stand-alone, you won’t want to miss a second of it. I’m eager to read Jane’s, Harry’s, and Anthony’s stories in future books. This entire series has had all the romance, passion, and emotion I’ve come to expect from Darcy Burke. She has a way of writing traditional romance plots with their own unique twist and drawing you into the stories till you almost become the characters. If you like great emotional development between the hero and heroine, subtly witty plots, and well rounded, realistic characters, you’ll fall in love with her stories.
