Let's start this off with an invitation to get some FREE books. No, you didn't read that wrong, we are talking about multiple free books. I love giving away free books because once people delve into the fast-paced mystery thrills I write, they go on to buy lots more.

All I need from you is an email address to send them to. Here's the link you need - https://mailchi.mp/fd47a6eb4ae5/patri...

When I wrote my first novel, Paranormal Nonsense, I was a Captain in the British Army. I would love to pretend that I had one of those careers that has to be redacted and in general denied by the government and that I have had to change my name and continually move about because I am still on the watch list in several countries. In truth though, I started out as a mechanic. Not like Jason Statham, sneaking about as a contract killer, more like one of those greasy gits that charge you a fortune and keep your car for a week when all you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.

At school, I was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, I won my first award. However, calling it my first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, I am having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and will claim to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in my head as they clamor to get out.

Now retired from the military, I live in the south-east corner of England with a pair of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, I doubt I will ever leave, the beer is just too good.

Arbroath Smokie Slaying by Steve Higgs is the 7th book in the Albert Smith's Culinary Capers series. Travelling to Arbroath to taste the kippers that make the town famous, retired policeman Albert Smith and his "assistance" dog Rex Harrison, stumble upon a murder set up as a suicide. This series is so much fun and Rex plays a starring role. It is interesting to learn about the English food along the way. Lots of laughs as the hunt for the gastrothief continues.

Three stars may be a little generous on this one. The story was a little more sad and tragic than some of the others. The dogs, ally cats, and seagulls added a bit of comic relief to offset the tragic parts of the story. Albert is so smart in some ways and so clueless in others but I guess that is what keeps the underlying storyline going. I am enjoying the series overall and will continue.

These books were a lot of fun to read. It was especially nice to have a 75+ aged hero that hasn't lost his intelligence and is still so full of life and willing to try new things on his own. Basically living his best retirement life despite the loss of his long time wife.

The writing is humorous and the situations that Albert and his trusty former police dox Max get into are not your typical mystery scenarios. These books are very enjoyable. If you are an audiobook lover, the English narrator, Charles Robert Fox, is great and brings additional authenticity to the locations and culinary delights that drive the stories.

This fun story is a blast!

I always get a real frisson of joy when I see another Steve Higgs book is out! This story hooked me, and reeled me in so fast, that I was totally engrossed in it within seconds.

Albert Smith and his dog; a huge German Shepherd called Rex Harrison; have gone to Arbroath in Scotland as part of an unofficial investigation that Albert has been making into someone whom he calls 'The Gastrothief.' Someone that Albert is sure exists who is kidnapping culinary experts in their fields for some reason that Albert has not guessed with any certainty.

In the last story Albert and Rex were attacked by two men; criminals; who attempted to kill them but instead both of them died themselves. These two men were booked to stay in the bed & breakfast that Albert has chosen to stay at in Arbroath. He is hoping to find a trail to the next team of the Gastrothief's, whom Albert believes will be in Arbroath trying to find the best smoker of haddocks; otherwise known as 'smokies.'

Whilst in Arbroath on the very first day, Rex gets into an altercation with some of the local seagulls. Ever the optimist, Rex tries chasing them, but sadly they take things badly and before long he himself is chased with his tail tucked firmly between his legs, as he runs from dozens of the birds, until finally he is able to find sanctuary in the backseat of a car driven by a local man who sees Rex and Albert in distress and comes to their aide. Introductions are made, and the gentleman tells them he is Hamish, the local smoker of the local speciality called smokies; After Alfred explains were he and Rex were headed, Hamish helps them out further by driving them to their b&b and therefore safety away from the seagulls.

But later that night Hamish is dead, by suicide according to the police, but Albert doesn't believe it and puts his own investigation to one side in order to investigate this death. Thus begins an extremely good story with giggles at Rex and the seagulls, and surprises in the investigation.

This story was truly hillarious! Rex gets into some brilliant scrapes and so does Albert and I absolutely loooved it! I think the Albert and Rex series is by far the best of all this author's series of books. And maybe I'm repeating myself but this author just gets better and better with each book in each series that he writes, and that is no exaggeration; I gave it 5 stars for a good reason!

Albert and Rex are now in Arbroath Scotland, where Rex meets a gang of highly organized seagulls and a nasty gang of ferile cats who enlist his help to seek their vengeance on the seagulls. When the gulls attack Rex, they are rescued by a friendly local who is soon murdered. Albert is suspicious of the highest ranking local cop, who seems to be overly involved in a case that would normally be looked into by lesser minions. While not the case he came to look into, Albert figures he may as well help out to occupy his time.

Rex falls for Rosie, a stunning Afghan Hound who says if he beats the seagulls she will be his. :) Quite the incentive for the smitten GSD.

Still on the trail of the Gastrothief, Albert checks into a local B&B where the kidnappers from his previous book would have stayed had they not met their fate. He does not realize that the dastardly duo have already been replaced, although the new team are well aware of his identity and inform the earl who tells them to get both Albert and his dog.

Albert, a retired detective, and Rex, a former police dog whose attitude got him bounced from the force, are touring around England to taste and learn to make some of Albert's favorite foods. Rex's favorite foods are anything edible.

The smokies take him over into Scotland's historic Arbroath to find this favorite. It turned into a very fishy visit.

Rex can always find the clues and criminal before Albert. Rex can't understand why his human can't smell what's right in front of him.

Poor Rex manages to irritate a bunch of seagulls who then target him often enough that he becomes paranoid. He needs to form a gang to take them down, but the other dogs are afraid of those birds.

Albert is also on the trail of a gastrothief who keeps abducting the best of the best in every town and village to which Albert ventures. Will a chef or someone be abducted in Arbroath?

Thank you, Mr Higgs, for giving us Albert and Rex.

I think a former police dog fired for a bad attitude, called Rex Harrison, is one of the best characters created by Steve Higgs (so far).  Rex's adventures in these mysteries are certainly hilarious and varied.  In Arbroath, Rex takes on seagulls.  Saying anything further would spoil the fun.

Albert, in addition to trying to follow a slim lead on the trail of the Gastrothief, and to learning about his favorite smoked fish, is again almost immediately embroiled in a local murder.  Solving the mystery means unraveling clues to long-held secrets by prominent persons in the community.  Unaware of their peril Albert and Rex again avoid the clutches of the Gastrothief.  Thinking that trail has gone cold, they next travel to Dundee to learn about its famous cake.  Who will Rex tangle with there?

Albert and Rex have moved on to Arbroath. They are seeking associates of a criminal mastermind: the Gastrothief. Shortly after their arrival, a local commits suicide. However, Albert thinks it was murder. Something he's determined to solve. Along the way, Rex becomes embroiled in a problem of the animal variety.

This story is in the Cozy Culinary Mystery, Amateur Sleuth Mysteries, and Cozy Animal Mystery genres. The murder and animal problem are both resolved by the end. But, the questions about the Gastrothief remain unfulfilled. It's time to move further into the series.

Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Haunting. Romantic. Scary. Tragic. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Witty. Wonderful characters.

Best Yet!

I love these Rex and Albert stories - despite not being a dog person. LoL. They are so much fun!

Rex is the best side-kick and aide-de-camp for Albert. And of course, cheering the elderly retired investigator on is a basic part of reading the book!
The seagulls are an hilarious addition to the plot. Anyone who saw Alex Hitchcock's movie, The Birds, will be able to picture what was going through people's, and cats' and dogs', minds. I also think of "Fnding Nemo" with the seagulls saying, "Mine, mine...."

PG - It is a murder mystery, but there is no bad language or sex scenes!

I highly recommend this fun book and series!

09/10 Punkte.

Retired police detective, Albert , retired police dog, Rex...

Well, actually Rex was sort of fired. He was smarter than his handlers and couldn't understand why they didn't just let him solve the crimes. He finally found a human who understood him, at least a bit and he and Albert roam the countryside hunting down excellent meals and bad guys. I thought the author did an excellent job relating Rex's viewpoint in an authentic manner. Animals are a lot smarter than us humans give them credit for! This was fun read with some serious murder to give weight to he story. I'll definitely check out the rest this series!

Just loved reading this book!!! Rex and Albert get involved in a murder investigation and almost have huge problems themselves, but Rex makes unexpected and highly unusual friends and it's really fun to read how he saves his human. Rex also faces great danger together with his new and unexpected friend but is able to find the way back to Albert. A long-hidden crime gets solved, a small town gets its peace back and Albert, although feeling the weight of his age, is again with his beloved Rex, a hero! Looking forward to reading what this duo will uncover next!
As a member of the author's ARC team, I received a free copy of this book and this is my honest review.

These books are such fun and hard to put down. Albert and his four-legged friend find themselves in the middle of yet another murder conundrum. Rex's nose can sniff out the subtlest of clues thanks to his police training but he can't explain them to Albert who usually gets there the long way round. This hilarious book has it all: love, hate, romance (canine & human), money, cover-up, a dodgy cop, suicide (??) and murder. There's something fishy going on in Arbroath - and it's not the Smokies. I liked this story so much that I'm prepared to forgive Steve Higgs the coroners/medical examiners/ clampers, none of which we have in Scotland. I recommend this book... and the others.

Enjoying the Rex and Albert series

I have enjoyed reading the first seven books in the series. I am looking forward to reading more of the series. I like Albert as an elderly man traveling and solving crimes with the help and protection of a trained police dog. It is inspiring because my husband is just a few years younger than Albert and retired. He gets around quite well for his age and we enjoy doing things together. Others reading this book should also take inspiration and Give thanks to God for family and friends, good health and the many blessings God has given you this year! Don't forget to buy your pet a Christmas present!

The dog + stray cats + gulls part of the adventure was a lot of fun and well "worth the price of the book." The mystery was only so-so, and the author persisted in telling a whole bunch of the story from the perspectives of the evil-doers, which trashed all of the mystery in the mystery--what fun is it watching the detective figure out things that you already know, because you just spent the last two chapters with the bad guys. It's stupid and not at all enjoyable.

With that in mind, I might read the next one but only if I can get a copy for free at the library or on KindleUnlimited. I'm certainly not paying for a book when I have to skip half of it.

This was quite a story for Albert and Rex to untangle. Secrets of the past are threatening to upend certain persons future and someone is doing their very best to keep that from happening. Albert and Rex work with Argyll, the son of the first person who was murdered, to uncover the secret. But there are so many twists and turns along the way. And the most unsettling thing of all is that once all has been revealed, Argyll goes missing! Is he the next victim of the Gastrotheir (as Albert is calling him). This was the longest story so far but kept my interest through it all with so many twists to the plot.

So many twists & turns plus Red got to have drama of his own

30 years ago something happened in Arbroath. A secret that people were dying to keep. Cover ups by police & several other prominate people, kept the secret well hidden until A!bert & Rex come to town that is!
This book had some laughs as well as drama of finding out what really happened all this years ago. While Red was having run ins with seagulls & alley cats, plus a female Afghan dog that really had his head spinning!

From the master mind of Steve Higgs comes another exceptional adventure starring our dynamic duo
Rex and Albert. Fraught with danger, this excursion to Scotland brings on more than Albert had ever anticipated. He may not have found the Gastrothief but he certainly found trouble. Superbly crafted
and a delight to read, you can never go wrong when Mr. Higgs is the author. I give it ten stars.
Very Highly Recommended.

Albert and Rex are really in the middle of it this time. While exploring the source of the delicious Arbroath smokie and on the trail of the Gastrothief, the intrepid duo discover a murder (again), a flock of deadly seagulls, a gang of evil alley cats, and lots of criminal doings. A great adventure as the saga continues. Lots more gastro-adventures to come, I think.

I received an ARC copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Another stoater of a book. The first person that Albert meets on his arrival in Arbroath turns up dead a few hours later. How can this be a suicide when the man was in good spirits? Even Rex is in agreement when his nose gives him clues. With a nod to the ongoing storyline of the Gastro thief this is another caper of mystery and murder with added police corruption and lots of hilarity from the extra story of Rex’s war on seagulls. A brilliant book to lift the spirits.

I just love this story! Rex and Albert are such great characters and have become beloved friends. This trip to Scotland on the next leg of the gastro-tour is way more than they (and I) expected! The story just flows and the twists and turns kept me guessing through the humorous situations. I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion.

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

Another delicious entry

In the Culinary Capers series as old Albert and his dog Rex Harrison figure out and solve a most complex mystery involving four of the most important men in the fishing village of Arbroath.
Albert enjoys the famous Arbroath smokies every day for breakfast. Rex falls in love and manages to subdue both the gaggle of sea gulls that want to kill him and the cadre of ferile cats who want to scratch and bite him to death meanwhile saving his human's life.

I'm not sure what I like better about this one, Rex's adventures or Albert's detection. Rex gets into it with the local sea gulls and tries to enlist the local dogs against them. The other pups are too frightened of the gulls to help. And then Rex meets the alley cats. Albert narrowly misses getting kidnapped by the Gastrothief's minions and solves the mystery of the death of Hamish, the best maker of smokies in Arbroath. Mr. Higgs is a master storyteller who keeps me reading. Reommended.

Like the other books in the series, this one is a mystery, a whodunit, that takes place in a culinary setting. And, like the other books in the series, this one contains some typos in the text as well as some layout issues. But, also like the other books in the series, if you like this type of story (and I do), you would enjoy reading this book. I did and I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.

Left hanging

I’ve now read all four of Steve Higgs’ series back to back and have reached what is currently the end. I await the release of the next book impatiently. Reading these has kept me up late several times as I think it more important to finish the book than to sleep. I recommend to anyone that likes a good story.

Smokies

Mr Higgs said this book is the longest and the most complex! I agree completely. Not sure how the story became so complex and confusing except that things kept changing. Just about the time I thought to have it figured out it would change again! I’m glad things finally got straightened out!

Away to start reading this book but a bit cheesed off from end of last book that arbroath is a wee village, and famous for kippers , actually it’s a royal burgh and biggest town in angus , and it’s smokies which are smoked haddock which were famous for plus our famous abbey ( Declaration of Independence between Scotland and England) other than this I’m really enjoying the books

This one nearly brought me to tears!
The amazing duo of a man and his loyal dog get into some scrapes that have made me laugh, gasp and stay up way past my allotted sleep time. Never once have any of them brought me to sad tears, but this one came dangerously close! A wild ride from start to finish! I just couldn't stop reading! Fab story!
