Rate this book
As a happily married presenter of a top-rated morning news show, Olivia Ross has it all. Only none of it’s real. The show’s ratings are flailing, her boss is out to get her, and her marriage has become a hollow sham. And things are about to get worse. Because after her co-anchor falls ill, the show needs a temporary stand-in. And Olivia needs only one look at her youthful, sexy new co-host to know that she’s there to replace her.

Young and hungry, Holly Reynolds is thrilled to get a temporary gig on the biggest show on the network. She’s even more thrilled to work with Olivia, her idol. Only icy Olivia doesn’t seem to like her very much. Nevertheless, Holly is determined to get close to the woman she admires more than anyone.

Olivia tries desperately to resist the charms of her rival. But as their working relationship develops, it becomes difficult for Olivia to keep seeing Holly as the enemy. Against all odds, they find themselves falling for each other…

As the network schemes and the bosses connive, can Olivia and Holly find a way to be together and take on the world at the same time? And can they report the news without becoming the top story?

‘Through the Roof’ is a witty romantic comedy from the internationally best-selling author of, ‘The Plus One’, ‘Just Married?’ and ‘Now and Again.’

I always find comfort in Natasha West books because they're often light, funny, and cute. I discovered West when I got my KU subscription a couple of years ago and went through a LOT of her books, and so I always get ready for a satisfying read.

Through the Roof is no different... the two mains work together as hosts on a breakfast morning show (Holly Reynolds, the younger/sexy anchor is a stand-in while the regular male host is on sick leave; and Olivia Ross is the older, seasoned pro who can eat politicians for breakfast.) Of course, they're both attracted to each other, but they don't really fight it so by the 50% mark, they've already gotten together. The shenanigans that follow in the workplace are amusing and there is some angst that thankfully happens soon after they get together, so nothing feels too forced (or too late!) with the writing.

One thing to note - I did expect a sex scene (or two?), so was surprised when it was skipped over... I started to think I was reading a different author - has West changed tack recently, or is this just an anomaly? No big deal, really, and I'm sure some readers will welcome the PG nature of the book, but still... ;)

3.5 stars!

I was charmed by this. The dynamic between them starts off as an oppositional one. Well, at least on Olivia's side. She's pretty sure that Holly is being brought on to see how she'd do as a replacement on the show she has hosted for the last seven years. The new producer/director/whatever has blunted the format and Olivia isn't happy about it so she's not exactly disappointed to suspect that she's on tap for replacement. I very much liked that, while she suspected that Holly was fully informed and on board, she took the time to give her the benefit of the doubt and find out. And I liked, too, that she had an interesting growth arc of finding her way back to the confidence and happiness she'd previously had in her work and professional life.

Holly was fun, too. She was eager to work with someone she has respected for so long and sad to be frozen out initially. But I liked how she handled it and was still eager, but not puppy dog eager, to get to know Olivia in whatever way she'd let her. She had gumption and stood up for herself, even when people kept underestimating her based on her looks.

Their relationship was a little insta and I'm not sure why I seem to be okay with that. There wasn't a lot of buildup, and they went deep pretty fast. Maybe it's because West didn't rely on that for the emotional development? In other words, they had upset and friction and made mistakes both with each other and with others so the insta wasn't a shortcut to bypass those things that a serious relationship would naturally face. That's a theory, anyway.

It's a little bit wish-fulfillment and a little light, but I knew that going in because I've read others by the author. This is definitely one of her better stories and, frankly, it shows growth as it has better production values and a stronger commitment to PoV integrity (though not perfect as there are still the occasional error or editing slipup). So I'm going to give it 4½ stars that I'm rounding up because I was so charmed. I hope this indicates the direction the author is going because I'd love more similar stories.

A note about the author: I debated going extra into the author, but I want to pull out that this really is a much stronger work than others I've read by her. I've dinged her in the past and painted those issues as endemic to her writing style so I should be clear that this is a much more standard romance format with dual PoV as well as better production all-around.

A note about Chaste: Yeah, this one surprised me a bit as I know the author has done steam in the past. But this one pulls back before clothes even come off, so I consider it pretty chaste. It's clear that they sleep together and that they aren't getting much shut-eye when they do. But the references are oblique and don't go into any detail at all.

super lekka książka ze świetną chemią pomiędzy głównymi bohaterkami!

mimo wszystko zabrakło mi ciekawej fabuły i bardziej rozbudowanych postaci, wydarzeń

wszystko skończyło się bardzo szybko, a ja mogłabym jeszcze czytać i czytać…

On a positive note, this was a funny and sweet read. I really liked it because I found both mains rather endearing. I enjoyed seeing the happier change in both of them as the story progressed.

My only critique would have to be the editing. I would have rated this much higher like I have with the others books I read by West. In this regard, there was a moment where Olivia was talking to her agent Hailey, but for whatever reason Liza was the one named when she'd already left the scene. Then just in the Epilogue, Holly herself says something like, "Olivia Reynolds..." when it's Holly Reynolds and Olivia Ross.

I know they're just small errors but I always thought those little details matter too.

This reminded me somewhat of the AM Show by Markinson/McLeod, which I also loved. I’m not sure which book predated which, but either way, Natasha West’s style is relatively light, low on angst and high on everyday sexy. This is my second book by the author and again she writes super interplay between the characters. You very quickly root for them to be together, and when they are, you will root for them to overcome their external obstacles. I loved this!

Olivia Ross should be happy with her life. She's found fame and fortune as the co-host of a popular morning news show. But below the surface, her success feels empty. Once known for her cutting interview style, she is now relegated to 'feel-good' segments that go down easy with breakfast. She's trapped in a toxic marriage that she can't leave out of fear for her reputation. And her boss just brought in a new co-host—a younger, sexier co-host—who Olivia is certain is there to replace her. Holly Reynolds has been underestimated all her life because of her looks. So she jumps at the chance to work under her longtime idol, Olivia Ross, hoping that she can learn from the woman and get taken more seriously. Her plan is off to a rocky start as Olivia immediately ices her out. But Holly isn't too bad at thawing ice, and soon, the only thing Olivia and Holly feel is heat.

cw: infidelity (by side characters), manipulative and emotionally abusive spouse

This was a fun, entertaining read. It went by so fast! It's not anything new, but it was certainly engaging.

The Characters: Both Olivia and Holly were lovely. I appreciated Olivia's intelligence and maturity, as well as her understated kindness. I liked Holly's enthusiasm and optimism. They weren't that fleshed out as characters though. I felt like Holly especially got assigned to the pretty-girl-who-actually-has-a-brain stereotype, and she needs to get over her hangups on it by the end. Olivia similarly had a somewhat cliche hangup to overcome. The conflicts added some dimension to their characters, but not much. As for the supporting cast, I liked the side characters well enough. Olivia's publicist was a standout to me.

The Romance: This is an age-gap, celebrity, meeting-your-idol romance, all tropes that I enjoy. So this made me fairly happy. I could sense the physical chemistry between the two leads. My only criticism is that beyond mutual attraction and being in the same place at the same time, I couldn't see anything that made Olivia and Holly particularly right for each other. That's just a minor point though; not everyone needs to be "meant to be."

The Plot: The plot centers around the romance but also follows the morning show pretty closely. I wouldn't say there's anything too special here. This is an extremely short book, so the plot was pretty simple. It never dragged though, which means starting it late at night could be a mistake. There are some easily avoidable misunderstandings, but the plot didn't get held up too much by those.

The Writing: This was really funny, oftentimes in a silly way. I enjoyed the dialogue, which was good, considering this is a book involving a morning news show.

All in all, a good time! I would recommend this, especially if you have access to it through KindleUnlimited.

At last eight out of five stars for this one ;)

This is a very refreshing and uplifting book, especially at a time, when mainstream media scribblers, who have the insolence to call themselves journalists, and dimwit politicians worldwide insist on feeding people their C-narrative full of lies and scaremongering and so-called social media platforms censor anyone, who dares to have real information or just a different opinion!

The two heroines, Olivia and Holly, are two intelligent, bold and driven journalists, who are forced to stick with soft fluff and keep their research results about the people they “interview” to themselves to give a platform for voicing if not outright lies, so at least narratives, that circumvent the truth to deceive the public.

As the ratings tank for the morning show the two ladies co-host and the relationship between them changes, the producer decides to fire the senior one of them, causing the two of them to rebel and start producing real journalism and tear first a government minister and then a so-called influencer publicly apart on air.

From the resulting chaos finally emerges the program anew, after a change of the producer, with the two of them reconciled and new vigour as well as the return of their sharp and witty reporting. Brilliant!

On top of that is the romance between the two main ladies absolutely cute and very well written throughout, so in all it was a very satisfying read and I can only pray for more journalism as is described here to re-appear for all our benefit.

This was a cute and pretty hilarious read. I found myself laughing quite a bit throughout and that is pretty rare for me. I mean, I read a lot of things that I find funny, but it is not very often that a book has me literally laughing out loud.

The chemistry between the MCs, Holly and Olivia, is great. Their development is very well done. The relationship between Holly and her brother Oscar is spot on for a brother/sister relationship. The pacing is fantastic and the dialogue is perfect. I could very easily see this becoming a great film. (hint hint to whoever makes that happen because lesbi-honest: we need more WLW romantic comedies.)

As a reader who is always looking for those reviews that tells me the level of "steam" to expect in a book, I would like to add for others like me that this one's sex-scenes are cut-to-black. Which is fine, it worked. I think anything more would have taken away from the overall vibe of the story.

All in all, great read! Highly recommend if you're looking for something that's quick, will have you laughing quite a bit and is light on the angst. This was my first Natasha West book, but I will be reading more in the future!

Half and half, and 100% fantastic

The first half had me laughing literally to tears, and second half was deeply satisfying with all the resolution I wanted, and still had that quintessential Natasha West humor; Britishly understated until the slapstick drops you in a manhole (sometimes literally, though not in this story), then winds down gently, somehow leaving the reader feeling genuine affection for the characters in their mirth. As someone who's put down books due to secondhand embarrassment, I've never had this issue with West's novels. Even when the main character is the butt of the joke, it's never cringey or humiliating, and that's due to the charming way the story is told. This story, like all others I've read from this author, was heartfelt without itself too seriously. Rom-com gold right here. Don't miss it.

‘I’m yours if you want me.’
Holly’s eyes widened, and her face broke into a smile that warmed Olivia like the sun. ‘I definitely want you.’

2.5 stars.

I think this would've been a better book had it been longer but as it is, there was no real development for any of the storylines let alone the romance.. I think they spent more time broken up than they did together, which honestly didn't really help with the fact that I felt... nothing. The relationship was stale at best, insignificant at worst. Everything was just too rushed, too fast, too bland.. and I think the shortness of the book played a lot in that..
All in all, this was a fast, somewhat okay read.. but not worth the time wasted in all honesty.

Being the face of a show isn't always what it seems, especially when you've been defanged somewhat, and then a pretty face is brought on in a 'temporary compacity'. And add a growing attraction to the mix, and things are about to get messy ^^

Natasha West is a master of romcom's, and her books never disappoint. There are humorous moments, ludicrous moments (I'll admit that Ben's reason for being removed from the show was great), and also deeply serious moments as well. There is laughter and pain, tempered against each other in a mix that is always pleasant to read, and makes you feel for the characters. Things aren't easy for Oliva and Holly, but they get there in the end, and the journey is, as always, a highly enjoyable read.

Light and warm, with a bit of a zing

Through the Roof is a lovely, low angst romance that's just perfect for a relaxing afternoon read.

The two leads had good chemistry, and their awkward fumbling into an unexpected relationship felt genuine and believable.
Equally believable were their antagonists: the scheming, the self-serving, and the sleazy. Just the kind of people you'd expect to run into in this kind of business (and sometimes in life).
The journalistic angle became really entertaining in the final act, and the two protagonists stood out more because of it.

Like a cup of cinnamon tea, it's light and warm with a bit of zing.
A recommended read.

I quite liked it.

I was quite surprised when the passionate nights were skipped, not that sex scenes are the be all or end all of a book and I do not think that should stop you from reading this book. For me at least it felt like the build-up to the time they spent together were setting a good mood but then skipping straight to the next day leaving the reader hanging a little bit.

That being said I enjoyed the writing and the chemistry between the leads and the drama taking place. As well as hating on the antagonist a bit.

I'm not very good at writing reviews but I thought I'd give it a go for once :)

Read this Book

As always, a fantastic read with fresh characters, gut-busting laughs, and situations that won't let you put the book down.

I have yet to read a book by NW that I don't absolutely love. I have them all on kindle, no I only wish I could have a physical copy.

This story is engaging, hilariously, and an absolute delight. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to read about people who can't help but stir the pot.

As always, the unusual level of honest truths (how fighting in romantic relationships really feel) and observations (love-bombing, cheats, divorce) about real life always make me read and reread these books.

Highly romantic take on media relationships

Holly is a rising star of her own teatime show, suddenly imported to co- star on a morning news program with an established superstar.

As it happened, there is immediate chemistry between the two women, Olivia and Holly. Holly is described as an uncynical, admiring woman, while the management of the show has forced Olivia to become increasingly suspicious and defensive. Each woman separately, and the two of them together, have to deal with curved balls (as we say in the US) coming in from all over: families, administration, media, interviewees, all creating quite plausible problems for the emerging couple.

Great Storyline!

This was a great storyline and even though there have been stories similar, it worked. The adulation from Holly and the maturity of Olivia brought together a comic yet sad look into show hosts life on the outside. How the story unfolds and the reasoning behind decisions being made for Olivia, keeps your attention to the conclusion. I just wish their would have been more romantic overtures between Olivia and Holly instead of just trouble. I don’t believe the chemistry had time to develop. I still enjoyed it but it was missing something.

Just what I needed right now - very lighthearted and sweet romance, low angst, a couple with interesting flaws that work together. I loved the tongue in cheek depiction of breakfast shows and the rubbish news items they're often packed with - a few of those really made me laugh. I wish West hadn't subscribed to the No Homophobia branch of romcom worldbuilding, especially when she addresses other structural inequalities in the book, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment overall and I'll definitely read more by her.

When Olivia's cohost is out due to losing his voice, her boss brings in young, pretty Holly Reynolds. Olivia is certain she's going to replace her, which makes things icy on set. Ironically, Holly is a huge fan if hers.

Olivia and her settle in, and even have good che.istry, but their producer clearly has futher plans... and Olivia's estranged husband is lurking.

Decent story, tho the romance felt rushed. They seemed to go very quickly from "i hate you" to "let's bang."

This book is on par with all her other books in the humor department. I can't help but laugh every time when I read one of her books. I thought this book was sweet and the relationship between Olivia and Holly was sweet, fun, and believable.

The storyline itself was fresh and unique and touched on some serious issues in a humorous and engaging way. Overall, I would recommend this book if you are looking for a quick and entertaining read.

I'm swimming in tears🤣🤣🤣

The title does the book justice... The sounds of my laughter were through the roof and I find myself swimming in the tears of that laughter. You know how sometimes when you find something that is so good that you can't bear to shift your attention away from it; this book came between me and my meal and I forgot that it was supposed to do distract me for five minutes. Congrats to the author for making me go hungry today.

This is a fun tale featuring two highly competitive women who quickly figure out that they are not only very attracted to each other but also on the same side. Their relationship develops very quickly. Fortunately, this is a them-versus-the-network comedy so fast feelings are mostly believable. The supporting cast is full of appropriate individuals working either for, or against, the ultimately happy couple. An enjoyable read with minimal amounts of angst and the expected HEA.

That one star's off there because of Ben (what happened to him?). Also Liza has officially entered my characters I hate with passion list.

This part though 🤣🤣
Liza took a deep breath. ‘He went on a theme park ride and screamed so hard he injured his voice, I guess?’ Olivia had thought a minute ago that Ben was dead. Now she had to laugh. ‘He what? What ride was this? It must have been bloody terrifying if he broke his throat over it.’ ‘It was the teacups’.
