”away from the eyes of others, their hands were still secretly linked, as if they could feel each other's heartbeats through their interlaced fingers.”
fake slackers is very much all the best qualities that exist within not only modern school life danmei but slice of life danmei in general. when it comes to this genre it can be very hard to maintain an even balance when it comes to the plot and characters but fake slackers did it wonderfully. not for one second was i bored even though 96% of the novel was just xie yu & he zhao & their classmates navigating their youth together.
fake slackers was silly & adorable but it also had a lot of heart too. while fake slackers might not have the typical angst in this genre where the characters are seperated by their circumstances/family/society, there were some bittersweet nostaglic moments that really got me.
zhaoyu has such an interesting dynamic, actually, the whole plot is really interesting. two intellectually brilliant individuals who pretend to be slackers? who pretends to be slackers to EACH OTHER even after they start dating? it was so ridiculous but so much fun.
fake slackers brought me so much comfort & happiness <3 i can see why everyone adores the novel and zhaoyu!!! do yourself a favor and read fake slackers if you are a fun of light, fluffy, and hilarious danmei with MC & ML who loves to bicker/tease each other!!
This is a comfort novel that I always find myself re-reading when I am bored. It's a story about two genius boys pretending to be dumb as they compete to be the first place from the last – all fluff and comedy which will get you laughing and feeling good, with the littlest dash of angst. Definitely a must-read.
Fake Slackers had been on my to-read list since last year but only decided to read it now after reading Beyond The Outline. The ML and MC of Fake Slackers made an appearance on Beyond The Outline and their characters piqued my interest.
Xie Yu and He Zhao’s characters in the novel were a bit different from their appearance as extras in Beyond The Outline. At first, I got a bit confused, wondering if they had a switch. But after checking the novel tags, I didn’t find any “fantasy” tag listed.
The plot of the novel was very common, a typical school genre danmei novel with exaggeration. Story-wise, I found it to be average. What kept me going was the characters’ personalities and the strong bond they had with their classmates.
Though the speed of the progress was inconsistent, the story pace was just right. There was no up-and-down, heart-thumping scene. It was smooth-sailing as if following a straight line. Only the conversations and He Zhao’s extraordinary shamelessness kept it going. Some of He Zhao’s actions truly made me laugh out loud but that’s about it.
There was a fanfiction at the end of the novel, and I’m not really sure if it was really a fanfiction or just a way to escape censorship. Now that fanfiction was hot, adding enough spice to the story, completing my imagination.
PS. This a review for both vol 1 & 2 of the ebook.
Finally I have something to call a comfort book, this made me giggle that I had to stay up late and read and after I was done reading I regretted staying up late cause I now missed them greatly. I'll always come back to read this whenever I feel down, they make my whole day🤍
as much as i love reading something that shakes you to your core, i also love reading just a slice of life.
“fake slackers” is genuinely such a cute domestic novel, there’s no emotional rollercoasters, just you going through a year of two school “tyrants”. if you ever catch yourself missing the dynamic that jiuhuo had in global examination then try fake slackers. even tho there’s no drama, no emotional turmoil, it’s still a very(!) enjoyable novel. their interactions are fun, and even side characters are interesting. both he zhao and xie yu have great personalities, you never feel infuriated with them, most of the time you just giggle at how silly they are 😭 literally my children love them sm
for me it was a very light read, a novel about the little matters of growing up. just sweet tooth rotting fluff. can’t really say much without spoiling all the fun, but it’s definitely worth a read. i love me some modern danmei without angst
I smiled. I laughed. I cried. This book is able to depict a very strong energy of youth and it hits close to home. It's really warm. The two main characters are really interesting and are compatible in a lot of ways. For me, the highlight of this book goes to every single member of Class 3, though! I couldn't stop laughing reading their antics, and to be honest it felt like re-igniting my high school memories, it was all so relatable. Not only the classmates, but also the teachers!!! 三班 forever~
"The steps weren't high. Out of habit, the two of them jumped straight down. For a moment, there was nothing beneath their feet. They welcomed the wind that rushed up to meet their faces, the pinpricks of starlight above, and the lights that ran endlessly in both directions on the street, stretching into the horizon." mis xavales :(
Seeing how long it takes for me to read this.. truly beyond my imagination This is what you called slow burn, it's only 112chapters and few extras but it feel like eternity It got me hooked after 40s chapter Also these two broken soul 😔
Anyway he zhao us shameless and a loser 😒 They're so stupidly in love gosh, also apparently the image that your boyfriend might end up working shit push you to help him study, lol
I had so many to say but also nothing to say, it's quite comical how I said the story is a very slow burn that I end up dropping it few times, but towards the ending I was like, i need to know more about them after this (There's still some extra left) But I wish there's more in main story as well, it feels like some are not properly explained, such as zhong jie, like what happened then? Also he zhao friends? Are they really cleared up just like that? The Quiz game itself..
Overall, it's a good read, but maybe just not up to my expectations.
Man, what a read. It honestly felt weird at first because I have never read a chinese novel that revolves around school. It was a breath of fresh air. If I have stumbled across this a few years ago, I would probably like it very very much.
The characters were really good. I was confused at first as to how the conflict would arise since it seemed out of place, but the author really pulled it off. This is not just your normal young love, it touched so many topics including future anxiety, familial frustrations, and peer bond.
He Zhao and Xie Yu’s relationship was quite endearing. Their behaviour and approach in life were one a of kind. I do wish to see something like that soon. Such nice and free spirts. I do hope there’s a timeskip. I WOULD LOVE LOVE TO READ IT!
Was ok. It had been on my list for a while... I guess I am too old for this one. I found it a bit boring and superficial. The way it is written seems quite amateurish. I did laugh quite a bit, but it is just that, a fluffy and light read. There is no depth to the characters or their stories. They just kind of graze over them to add some angst. It's ok to pass time, but quite disappointed as I thought this was my type of novel.
Maybe a 3.5. Cute coming-of-age story with funny, likable characters. I sometimes thought it dragged and was unnecessarily slow at parts and also sumn sumn weird gender roles sometimes sumn sumn.
