A recently published set of interviews and exchanges with Shehryar. Considering that Shehryar is among my favorite modern Urdu poets, I read it with interest. Prem Kumar does a decent, well intended job which has its share of flaws. The impressionistic prose takes over the intellectual-critical dimension as well as the personal shades. It is understandable that those shades might not have been accessible at all but then there is very little left to appreciate. On top of that the poetic quotes are sometimes out of meter or carry typos. I expected to learn a lot about Shehryar, his literary developments, his poetic adventures, thoughts and ideas but this is sadly a very compromised attempt.
