This is a medieval romance set in 1070 during the time of the Norman conquest.
Lady Laila’s home has been gifted to her enemy Norman knight Lord Aymon by the king.
Her father and sister are both dead and tasked with the protection of her young nephew Drake Laila agree's to wed the Norman invader.

This is a forced marriage historical romance and while I did find it interesting and an easy enough read I did also find myself getting regularly annoyed by both Laila and Aymon’s antics.

They both very swiftly jumpy to conclusions regarding each other and it was not even just once this is a recurrent issue between them.
As well as that they sometimes also behave like complete idiots with limited brain cells and there were numerous times their actions totally frustrated me and I just wanted to scream at them.

This was action-packed and also dual POV and did manage to keep my attention.
For me, it had both positives and negatives and though at times some of what happened felt a bit of a stretch it was a good read that I finished fairly fast.
If you're partial to medieval romance then this one should hit the spot.

Thank goodness there are still authors out there writing within the Medieval time period. There are not enough of these being released in my opinion, so of course I am happy to have found this one.

Set during the Norman conquest, the English Lady Laila marries Norman Lord Aymon out of necessity. It is for the safety of her nephew, Drake, an infant whose mother dies in childbirth, that Lady Laila makes this sacrifice. She intends to appease Lord Aymon only for this reason, but she has a very hard time being subservient to him.

Thankfully, Lord Aymon, no matter what war atrocities he may have committed, is not cruel to his wife or the infant. In fact, Lady Laila will soon come to realize the man she married is actually noble, a humanitarian, but also treasonous. Once his secret is out, all their lives are in grave danger.

I didn't like Lord Aymon at first with all his “I'm your Lord and Master” stuff. But, he was more bark than bite. His background is sad as he carries a great amount of guilt on his shoulders for mistakes he made in the past. He is actually a good guy and I grew to like him along with Laila.

Laila is a strong woman who fights for justice and for her family and the man she loves with bravery and fortitude. She's sassy, and defiant, but loyal to a fault and a true lady.

The author does a great job of sticking to the trademarks of Medieval romance. The set up is quite familiar with an English lady having to marry a Norman after he seizes her lands. The commonality of rape is mentioned and there is a situation where a character in the book must deal with this reality, however, it is not graphic. There is a slight paranormal tint to the story as well, another common occurrence in medieval novels, but, what sets this one apart is the treasonous acts of Lord Aymon and a little secret about his family.

There were some modern phrases that popped up here and there, but I am more likely to forgive this in medieval than in any other historical era, because to make the language too authentic would perhaps take the modern reader out of the story. Other than that one nick picky complaint, I thought the author did an admirable job depicting medieval customs and superstitions, the epic battles, the cruelty of war, and still managed to pull off a tender love story in the midst of so much strife and danger.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read and I think all lovers of historical romance will enjoy it.

Meh. What is attractive about irrational jealousy and not listening to a woman when she says no? I get that it's a medieval romance, but toxic masculinity does nothing for me.

Lady Laila and Aymon captured my heart.

This story felt very true to the time of 1070. Women and children were often treated as chattel, and servants could be mistreated as well. Pillaging, rape, and murder are prevalent themes, which are not unusual in a story set in this era. Please note this content if you have issues with violence.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it straight through in one evening. Laila is fortunate her father raised her to be self-sufficient and taught her the skills needed to protect herself and her orphaned nephew. This upbringing certainly came in handy.

Aymon, the bastard half-brother of William the Conqueror, is haunted by the atrocities of war. He is ready to settle down with a docile wife, a few children, and live out his life in peace on the land gifted to him from his brother in payment for his service in the war.

Unfortunately, Laila is out-spoken, opinionated, and despises the Normans for the death of her father. However, sparks fly when they meet as he takes over her family lands, and they wed within hours.

Will hatred, jealousy, and misunderstandings rule their marriage? Can they both overcome their prejudices and past to reach for happiness? Please pick up a copy today. If medieval historical fiction is your genre, you will love this book.

My only slight issue, was the use of a few terms that seemed a bit more modern than the time period of this book. But…the story was so intense and intriguing, this did not take away from my enjoyment in the least. I still rate it 5 of 5 stars and can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Many of the characters would make excellent leads in a story of their own.

I was made aware of this book through a book tour but purchased my own copy to review.

i liked Of Love and Vengence. I really like Medieval romance novels and wish there were more to choose from. The plot was interesting, characters were likable and relatable, I only wish the heat level was a little higher.

Aymon is a Norman conqueror who is half brother to William the Conqueror. He was given Laila's lands and plans to marry the woman site unseen. She of course is afraid of him but knows she needs his protection to keep her orphaned nephew safe.

These two have a lot of preconceived notions about each other (mostly on Laila's part) that begin to unravel the more they get to know each other. There is some violence in the story. But Aymon is basically a nicer Norman than what Laila thought she would get and she continues to distrust him.

Enjoyable read, hope to see more Medieval romances hit the market.

Of Love and of Vengeance is a historical romance set during the Norman Conquest. For fans of Medieval England, romance novels, and historical fiction, you would probably enjoy this well-written book.

The two main characters are Laila and Aymon. Laila is a spunky young woman who is strong and caring. She holds a bitter resentment towards Normans who are responsible for the many innocent lives of her family and serfs. She is not a submissive lady, rather she challenges authority when she does not feel it is right. She cares for the those around her – even if they are enemies. Aymon is very similar to Laila. He also has a strong and caring personality. He’s a Norman and bastard brother to the King. He has a duty to his King, but he also has a moral conscience. He carries secrets – some of which are dangerous.

Throughout the book, the characters must face secrets, stereotypes, and trust issues. Laila and Aymon are wed early in the novel, and they must overcome all three as they learn more about each other. Not only do these two characters face these challenges, but other characters, as well. Their friends, servants, and enemies have their own secrets that cause trust issues and enhance stereotypical actions. This brings adventure into the story. The King’s men are after some stolen property and are searching Tynte – Laila’s home. Aymon knows about it and tries to keep his new home safe. However, danger lurks around the corner.

The only complaint that I have about the novel is the bad guy is pretty much one dimensional – completely bad. All in all, I really enjoyed this story.

I was provided with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

When her serene life is shattered by the invasion of her homeland by Norman warriors, Laila is at the wrong side of fate. To add to her woes, she and her sister Ead learn that their assets are entrusted with Lord Aymon, a Norman. The only solution that Laila is presented with, is to marry Lord Aymon. Laila grudgingly agrees, keenly on the lookout for a chance to do away with Lord Aymon when she can. She finds his treason unforgiveable. Lord Aymon is a man facing his own demons, having been through many hardships. His dream of settling down with some peace of mind and a wife who cares is ruined when he finds himself with the snarling Laila. Things take a turn when Laila learns of Lord Aymon's true reasons for his actions. Will they finally overcome their enmity and lead a happy life together, is what the book takes us through.

It's been a while since I've read a romance fiction book that blends historical narratives with emotional realism. I loved the characterisation, especially Laila's. The female protagonist, Laila, gives an earful to anyone who cares to listen and stops just short murdering anyone who gets on her nerves. She softens when she learns of Lord Aymon's demons. The pace of the book was good. The plot was engaging.

Overall, this was a good read and I definitely recommend this to lovers of romance.

I received this book from Goddess Fish Promotions in return for a fair and honest review.

The Normans have invaded England and are literally on the warpath. Laila and her sister, Ead, are recovering from the invasion of their home and the deaths of their loved ones. Their home has been given to a Norman Lord and they must appease him unless they want to become homeless.

This is a gritty story that paints a story of what it might have been like during those times. At times, not easy to read due to the pictures in my mind, this was nevertheless a very satisfying read. Our heroine is a sassy female who has been allowed to live an unconventional life by her father and can shoot, hunt and fish with no assistance from a male. Do not ask her to sew, mind you!

As the story progresses you see how both main characters learn that the whole of a race can't be swiped by the same prejudices. There is good and bad in everyone and everything. Seeing them learn to trust and care for each other was wonderful. The secondary characters are just as well rounded - Hildred, Guy, Alyse and Hugh to name just some.

A brilliant historical romance with the right balance of realism and romance to make it a gripping read. Highly recommended.

Good Characters, But the Language!

I love a well-written medieval romance, but I don't think I've read many that take place around the time of the Norman conquest of England. That's what made me curious about this book when I saw it at one of my favorite book review sites. While I liked the characters and their story, unfortunately, the book is poorly written from a language and grammar standpoint... so much so that I DNFed the book around 40%. The heroine is strong, which I always love. This is definitely an enemies-to-lovers romance, as she is a native Briton and he is a Norman invader. Not just any Norman invader, either; he's the illegitimate half-brother of William the Conqueror. As often happens in these kinds of romances, the hero is somewhat unlikeable at first—or we are at least easily prejudiced by the heroine’s thoughts about him before we even meet him—but he shows himself to be a better man than imagined as the book unfolds. I actually liked the characters and the general flow of the plot.

But the language, grammar, and usage problems just got in the way of any enjoyment I might have gleaned from the other good aspects of the book. Multiple commas are left out, especially the ones after long introductory phrases and separating independent clauses connected by a coordinating conjunction. I did receive an ARC copy of the book, but I also “purchased” it for free when it was available for such before I actually read the ARC. I read the book using Amazon’s Kindle Cloud Reader, so the mistakes I saw ARE in the published edition. Commas were not the only issue. Some straight-up wrong words or versions of words are used. For instance, the author used the possessive of mistress for its plural (i.e., mistress’ instead of mistresses), “writing a wrong” was used instead of “righting all wrong… and several more mistakes like these happened throughout the part I read. Also, far too many modern words and phrases were used, and that often pulled me out of the past of the story jarringly into the present. The author uses French on occasion, but it is clear she does not understand the rules of that Latinate language. For instance, at one point, she has a very unpleasant character razz the heroine by calling her an “anglais chienne” (i.e., English dog). For one thing, the author uses a masculine adjective with a feminine noun… a big no-no. Also, French adjectives go after the noun... except for a very few irregular ones. So, that should have read “chienne anglaise.” Because of all the language issues, I do not feel like I can recommend this book.

I received a free copy of this book (and later "purchased" it for free at Amazon before reading the ARC copy), but that did not affect my review.

Forced to marry Lord Aymon so that her young nephew can survive, English Lady Laila hates the Normans she holds responsible for the deaths of innocents. Laila is a feisty, intelligent, strong-willed young woman who is very caring of others. She is not submissive and will speak up if she feels something is not right. Actually Lord Aymon is similar in this way with his a strong and caring personality, even though Laila does not see these qualities at the beginning. There are secrets to be kept, but Laila must learn the truth so she will place her loyalty where it belongs.

I think the author did a great job with this story line and the characters. It was well-paced for the most part and held the reader’s interest. Grab your copy and experience the feeling of history coming alive.

This story pulled me right in to the plight of Laila and her family. I loved Laila's willingness to do what was necessary to protect her nephew and her serfs/friends. As she had more difficult choices to make, I felt her struggle. Aymon was a man who wanted a secure life in a country that despised his people. He had his own secrets, and as these came to light, it was interesting watching them work everything out. At times, the story was a little heavy with descriptive detail, but for the most part, this book was worth the read, and I highly recommend it.

I received a copy of this story through Goddess Fish Promotions, and this is my unsolicited review.

Dramatic, emotional, and so good!
This is a tale of love and hate which emotion will win out in the end? When both are forced into a union where one just wants a quiet life and the other wants vengeance this is not a great start. There are some very moving and powerful scenes in the book. This book truly gives the reader insight into this time period. The challenges that were given to the characters were outstanding. I highly recommend this book It is well worth spending time with. I did receive a free copy of this book and I voluntarily chose to review it.

This historical romance fondly reminded me of ones I had read when I first started delving into the genre, especially A Year and a Day by Virginia Henley. I liked the characters, even though they did things a bit backwards from the traditional romances. I very much enjoyed Laila as a character and Aymon had redeeming qualities. Some of the historical elements were a bit stretched and there were a few editing/proofreading niggles that pulled me a bit away from the narrative at times, but the love story was still very beautiful.

I was given a free copy of this book for honest review.

This book was different and great! When the Normans raided England they killed many people and destroyed their homes Including Laila's. Along comes Aymen who everyone thinks is a rapist and killer. He decides to marry Laila even though she has a strawberry mark on her face. They go thru trials and tribulations of finding themselves and each other.

Good read, thoroughly enjoyed it. She is English while he is a Norman, normally enemies. He is given her ancestral home by his half brother the Norman King. To ensure her young nephew’s survival she agrees to become his wife. He is hiding a secret that could see him charged with treason. She eventually learns what he is hiding and will do anything to keep her family and husband safe.

Not bad, but not great

The story started promisingly but, could have benefited from a somewhat less manic ending. There was too much, in too short a space of time which, made it sound a bit preposterous.
The story could have also benefited from some research on basic things such as the fact that a female pig is called a sow, not a boar.

Better than I expected.....

Very medieval story line in King William time period, of course its war with the Saxons & Normans. If brutality against women bother you then this book isn't for you as with the timeline of the period women had no value.

What a beautiful story 🔥🔥🔥

The story started out extremely well. I got concerned somewhere in the middle when the main characters started to appear weak and soft. But coming down the end the twist the story took really made it worth it.
