Creeples!

Rate this book
Let’s just come right out and say it . . . stranger things do happen at Aberdasher Academy of Science

We’re talking weird science, with fantastical consequences such as a slithering colossal Mongolian Death Worm, clashing medieval Bog People, an ambushing Ayia Napa sea monster, and a ravaging mythical beast, just to name a few!

Desperate to raise funds to save their favorite teacher’s Genomic department from closing, Johnny “Spigs” Spignola, Theresa Ray “T-Ray” Rogers, and Pablo “Peabo” Torres team up to launch a crowdfunding lab experiment, but hastily use a mysterious DNA serum that astonishingly creates six pint-size, magical humanoids—the students affectionately call Creeples—who unleash mystical mayhem and campus chaos.

But even more shocking, a startling mystery emerges for these intrepid teens. Their noble but foolish actions uncover a shadowy insider’s evil plan to gain demonic supremacy from the academy’s hidden powers of ancient sorcery—and the Creeples unwittingly stand in the way!

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

Sort of a scientifictional version of Harry Potter, where an unruly kid genius wins a scholarship to a private school with an accelerated science curriculum. Personally, I'm not sure I'd trust school kids with some of the equipment described. Aren't bunsen burners dangerous enough?

He meets a couple of friends, tries to chat up the best looking girl in school, and has the sorts of adventures you'd expect. Humorous and engaging. Give it to a Potter fan!

If you like Gremlins and magic, you will love this middle-grade novel. Creeples are rascally little beings but love their creators in their own way. If you let your child read and see Harry Potter, then this book will be awesome for them.

The book also shows friendship, sticking together, and courage.

I won this though FirstReads on Goodreads.

This was a middle grade adventure story featuring weird science and magic. It was often a little funny and a bit goofy, much like middle graders.

Crazy creatures and children getting to save the world. A good read for elementary students.

Pidgeon mixes a heady brew science, unusual tech, and humor in this fun middle grade romp.

As a fresher in the Aberdasher Academy of Very Weird Science, the unruly, ingenious Spigs is glad to be away from home. Together with the prim, brilliant T-Ray and the introverted techhead Peabo, Spigs is assigned to assist in the laboratory. But when the dean threatens to cut the department’s funding, the trio takes matter in their own hands, unaware of the chaos awaiting them.

Laced with intrigue and humor, the fantastic SF science tale plays out at a dizzying pace as the trio races against time to unravel a sinister conspiracy that could destroy the world. Pidgeon skillfully blends ultra-advanced science with uncanny technology, the tension stays high, and a continuous sense of wonder compliments the humorous tone.

Spigs, T-Ray, and Peabo make for a fictional trio that readers will hope to see again and again. Peppered with laugh-out-loud moments and weird science, the novel makes for a page-turner.

Ever heard of 3-D genetic engineering? Well, three special students at a school for advanced scientific/technological aptitudes are assigned as Lab Rats in a genetics lab. They become so involved in their potential research that common sense fades away down a hidden hallway. Enter a secretive cult, mysterious happenings in a haunted bell tower, six littles homunculi with strange abilities and their cravings for Cheeto's, catnip side effects, and general mayhem. Fast paced, funny, and the shudder of knowing the characters will make some far reaching choices makes this a well paced novel. This was a free book to read and review. I have no connection to anything involved. I enjoyed this book, aimed at middle grades and older, because I could follow the characters in my imagination as if a full length animated series. The characters are well described, have many diverse talents and backgrounds. This is a great read aloud book, if you read it silently, you will giggle hysterically and those around you will want to read it too!

So much to love about Creeples! It's hilarious and witty, and it is also weird and quirky. I love the fantastical creatures which definitely gave it a Weird Science vibe.

The boarding school, smart kids, and the trio friendship definitely had a Hogwarts Vibe... with that science nerd twist.

This would be a fun read for a middle schooler (5th-8th grade IMO), which TBH can sometimes be hard. It's a clean read (one swear word H*** that I recall), lots of action, and tons of science terms. It's fun!

Some favorite quotes:
"Spigs was never keen on protocols, but he figured he should probably play by the rules on day one. Just this once." pg4

"He fancied himself an expert at bending the rules, even though he, unfortunately, was also an expert at getting caught." pg7

"Teamwork makes the dream work." Said a lot :)

"The POWER of friendship! And with true friends, good can conquer evil." pg315

What are creeples? Spigs has gotten kicked out of many schools due to his mischief. He will now be going to the Aberdasher Academy of Science in New York. He will be studying “weird science.” A geneticist professor chooses Spigs , and also chooses his roomie Peabo and T-Ray (a girl) as her research assistant. When. the academy shuts down the professor’s department, the trio decides to prep an experiment to validate their prof’s research. This involves a 3-D bio-printer and a mysterious serum. Before they know it, the teens have six 20-inch creatures with a penchant for wreaking havoc — they are creeples! The trio discovers that they are “bad.” Meanwhile, there are others who want the creeples. The creeples have the ability to “zap” inanimate objects to life plus more.

The author has written a book that is a mystery and humorous at the same time. There is laughter even when the characters (the trio) are cynical and put in danger. The story is full of action. There is a supernatural component to the story. There is a hint at the end of the book suggesting a sequel will become available.

Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review or any review at all. The opinions are strictly my own.

Three Lab Rats, Six Creeples, lots of trouble.

Johnny Spignola, or "Spigs," a multi-expelled 15-year-old boy, is determined to make a good year at Aberdasher Academy of Science. He is excited to study supernatural monsters. But on the first day of school, Spigs makes an enemy out of the Dean. On the bright side, Spigs became one of the lab rats in his favorite Geonomics class. Unfortunately, the academy closes down the Geonomics class, and it's up to Spigs and his friends Peabo and T-Ray to launch a crowdfunding lab experiment. Little did they know that their help would cause a lot of trouble.

Wow, this book was an action-packed and hilarious adventure filled with foolish creatures.

The Aberdasher Academy seems like a wacky and fun place to be. You learn more about science and are curious about the mysterious bell tower. They even have a 3-d bioprinter that can reproduce biotic parts!

Spigs is mischievous, and he reminds me of one of my classmates. Peabo is a tech whiz and is just as fun as Spigs. T-Ray is the group's brain and wants to use her knowledge to help others. The creeples (their creations) cause a lot of mayhem and are the silliest creatures alive. Dean Smathers is mean and has a shady character.

The theme of Creeples is to experience friendship and science in its many forms. I recommend this book to people who love a wacky science adventure!

Happy reading! Paige ❤️

Thank you, Mr. Pidgeon, for sharing this creepily good book; I had a lot of fun.

A goodreads win for me back in April of 2020. A good vs. evil story line with young science nerds in their arrival of their freshman year at a very prestigious academy in the upper New York. The three main characters, T-Ray, Spriggs and Peado, each bring their own expertise to the group. Of course the start off in trouble with the Dean of the school but find acceptance in one professor who brings them in her special project. When the project gets shut down suddenly by the dean the three take charge of the situation to save their professor's project. By accidently creating these crazy little creatures that cause chaos on the campus. Without to many spoilers, the Dean is evil, his "special students" are under his power and all crazy creatures come out by the Creeples special powers. Great read for students 12-14 .

Spigs, T-Ray and Peabo have made it into Aberdasher Academy of Science. Incredible, fantastical and weird science. The three are picked to be "lab rats" by the Professor of Genomics. As the students are in the midst of making progress, the Dean has shut the program down for good. The group start a crowdfunding lab experiment to help their teacher. Breaking the rules, they add their DNA and some from a found serum. The results...6 pint sized humanoids called Creeples. The Creeples cause mystical mayhem and campus chaos. While trying to contain the situation, the three students uncover a demonic takeover for the academys's ancient sorcery. Don't forget the Cryptids lurking in every corner.

Creeples is a fun and kooky middlegrade scifi novel. Protagonists Spigs, T-Ray, and Peabo are new students at a prestigious science school. In an attempt to help their favorite teacher, they inadvertently create a new species, which they dub "creeples". Chaos ensues. The friends then have to work alongside their new creations to stop a sinister plot that's brewing on campus. There were one too many fart jokes in the novel for my taste, but I can see kids enjoying the humor. The blossoming friendship between the characters was a definite plus. Overall, I found Creeples to be a fun scifi adventure.

I enjoy paranormal and thriller book but never thought I would like sci-fi-ish and fantasy book. This one is funny, imaginative and cringy at times. The cults and demon powers are so well-written because I found myself laughing and giggling while reading. The set friendship, loyalty and common ideas have built this book to another level. It is such an easy read and also page-turner that I finished it in one sitting. Finally this book reminds me of the movie Gremlins when I watched it on old TV shows few years ago.

Thank you @purpleshelfmedia @greenleafbookgroup for this complimentary copy to have my kids read and review this funny middle-grade book.

Fun weirdness! Middle graders will love this one. Students of the Aberdasher Academy of Science unleash the CREEPLES-little weird critters that use magic to cause chaos. Sort of a mix of Harry Potter meets Stranger Things meets Goosebumps. It was a bit over the top for me but I am many decades older than the target audience! Kids will LOVE this book with the science/magic mashups as the characters overcome their differences to work together to foil an evil plot. I was given a copy to review.

If you liked Harry Potter, you will like this.

Three kids meet at a Science Academy. Peabo, Sprigs and T-Ray, whose a girl are considered Lab Rats. They mix their blood, with a hidden vial of blood. That makes the creeples. Strange little characters. Once they eat catnip, they get wild. A man who owns a circus wants to kidnap the creeples. Then, we find out some nefarious things about the Dean. Good read.

I'm always looking for books that encourage young people to read and this is one that I believe the middle schooler reader will really enjoy. It has some interesting weird science, lots of humor, cute little creatures, some great young protagonists, and much action. It's a fun read that promises more to come.

I love the idea of this story, but the execution...not so much. It felt very clunky and awkwardly written so it made it a difficult read for me personally. I am an adult who regularly reads middle grade, and I would only recommend this to a person between the ages of 10-12, because after that this book looses it's charm.

Wow! The Creeples must return someday

At a strange science academy, three students are chosen to be Professor Bodkin's "Lab Rats." Trying to help their professor, Spigs, Peabody, and T-Ray try an experiment one night that goes horribly wrong and unleashes chaos upon the campus. This middle-grade novel is thoroughly entertaining, and even at age 85, I loved it.

This was such a fun escape. Based on some of the content and references (some a little darker than I was expecting), I'd probably stick to recommending for older middle grade and up. It does have some similar feels to Harry Potter, but I think a much more science fiction spin.

Creoles is a book that will appeal to many middle grade students who enjoy humor with their suspense. It was a bit more slapstick than weird science for me. However, this will be an easy sell in my middle school library.

Thanks to NetGalley, Publishers Weekly Grab-a-Galley, and the publisher for the chance to read this arc in exchange for an honest review.

This story was good but it reminded me a lot of the Harry Potter series mixed with the movie Gremlins. I was a little concerned about some of the content for the age group. The references to 666 and the occult I did not think was appropriate but maybe that's just me.

I won this from goodreads.

While this was a longer read for me than usual part of that was trying to read a bit too much at once. So not the books fault. I would not have purchased this on it's own but I will look for the story to continue. As some people have said it is sort of a science fiction / fantasy meld of Harry Potter but overall I think we get more of each of the characters strength and weaknesses. It's fun and not too deep. It was a nice break from my other reads.

Disclaimer: because I love to read and respect how hard it is to finish a book, I only give 5 stars. However:

The story gets better as it goes on. On page 50 I’d been half as happy as I was on page 100, and so on.

While reading it I found myself wishing I had a 10-year-old to challenge, by assigning the book.

It’s YA candy, tailor-made, but lounging outside with my wife in my mid-30s, I only felt the teensiest bit bashful about wanting so much to know what happens to the Creeples.

Best read with a tween in your life but if not, there are much worse ways to spend a weekend. Optimal innocent fun.

What a fascinating read! Completely imaginative yet believable. The Creeples are funny little creatures and their creators are a great representation of friendship and found family. Equally comedy and danger and sweetness.
