Between Worlds

Rate this book
Inspired by the likes of James Galloway's Subjugation and John Scalzi's Old Man's War, Between Worlds is a thrilling military sci-fi set in a strange new universe...

Jason had thought about punching a Shil’vati.

Who hadn’t?

Not only had the aliens conquered Earth with almost trivial ease, the seven-foot purple amazons had also had the audacity to start running the planet better than Humanity ever had.

He'd never actually act on that desire though. He was a reasonable guy, just trying to his finish engineering degree and get on with his life. Preferably without attracting any attention from his new alien overlords.

At least, that had been the plan...

Sexy Space Babes is a series at war with itself. The Shil'vati, polygynous purple space orc amazons, have invaded Earth, wanting nothing more than to FUCK HUMAN MEN. So the premise is obviously horny, yet it is not purely, or even mainly, porn. The actual story is that of a man shanghaied into serving in the military of an alien empire he doesn't believe in, yet inadvertently enmeshes himself into its system and with its people, trying to balance his own sense of morality and indignation with the losses and benefits he's experienced. And also fucks like four different species of aliens and gets three girlfriends. Bizarrely, there was also a gay sex scene, but it was removed from later versions of the story.

In fairness, the first book is mostly in harmony with itself. The military setting is merely a device to get an everyman into a room with horny sweaty amazons (in space). It's the succeeding two books that crank up the plot and begin taking the setting seriously and putting focus on the military elements. In the end, there's both too much military BS compared to the sex, but the sex also keeps interrupting the story and is rarely relevant. There is also frustratingly little connection between books. The main love interest of the first book does not appear in the second, and barely in the third. One character from book two carries on to book three, The author claims more is coming, and it will be less military focused than the preceding two books.

That promise is mostly immaterial, since what's interesting about this story is the strange web of fanfiction it has spawned. Fanfiction typically centres on large media properties like Harry Potter, Star Wars, SuperWhoLock, etc. Fanfiction for obscure works is less common, let alone for a self-published novel, and as far as I know, fanfiction for a self-published novel morphing into a shared universe may never have happened before. It has become a self-sustaining phenomenon, with fan authors sharing their fan species, worldbuilding elements, and even making references to and borrowing the characters and events of other fanfictions.

The convoluted web of Sexy Space Babes fanfiction

Something about a tale of invasion by sexy space babes has ignited the imaginations of a particular kind of online weirdo. Something in the premise speaks to their dicks, yet they are unsatisfied with its specific elements, whether fetish/romantic, or military/political. Some, like Cryptid Chronicle and The Only Thing That Matters are much darker than Sexy Space Babes, exaggerating the bad, yet unexamined things attributed to the Shil'vati in the original, turning them into tyrannical rapists with a completely dysfunctional and unaccountable political system. Others like With the Hanks go full fluff, because we're here to read purple amazons get penetrated with dicks, not bullets. The dozens of fanfictions span a wide variety of genres, but typically include both a military and a romantic element.

Common elements include protagonists being shanghaied, dragooned, kidnapped, arrested, drafted, or otherwise forcibly removed from their comfort zone, confusing usage of the words "masculine" and "feminine", Maryland being the reddest of red zones, Interior agents being absolute bastards/idiots, nobles being absolute bastards/idiots, rebels being absolute bastards/idiots, Shil'vati males being mincing gay stereotypes, mint being an aphrodisiac, Shil'vati BO smelling like lavender, Shil'vati misinterpreting action movies as pornography, Shil'vati being amazed by random Earth foods/inventions/practices, Shil'vati being horrendously god awful flirters, and more.

Failing Upwards asks a simple, poignant, question. "What would life be like if you had a two bombshell tomboy amazon sugar mommy girlfriends?"

In For a Penny tells a more involved drama, with an unusual dramatic arc. The protagonist, Kendrick, starts out at the maximal point of masculinity, saving a woman under a hail of gunfire, from which he loses his social circle, his job, and his home, forcing him to rely on his Shil'vati girlfriend and friends. When his girlfriend punches out her bitch coworker, he seemingly starts to accept his feminine role, but his mentality continues to decline, with a panic attack at an Italian restaurant and an emotional outburst at a baby shower (seriously). The end point of this development remains to be seen, but I expect it will be some kind of integration of his human and Shil'vati sides of life, standing in for the masculine and feminine aspects of his personality.

While the dramatic development is a bit soap opera-like, I enjoy the way people are written as communicative, in the same vein as I Want to Hold Aono-kun So Badly I Could Die. They just talk to each other. Events that would be drawn out like Herala's scheme to split Sean and Morivey, or Sean and Pelrinn's reconciliation after the baby shower, are instead resolved quickly and sanely.

My only real complaint with the story is the uneveness of the focus of the characters. Sean and Morivey are obviously the main characters, which is fine, but while Pelrinn and Grikel have fullblown subplots, and Ciltari has enough presence to justify her existence, Valran is nothing but a hanger on. I forget she's there most of the time, and I think the only thing she's actually done in the story is organize the Italian dinner. The story would really benefit from her either getting something to do (and it seems she may be getting a minor love interest like Ciltari), or being edited out entirely, but such are the hassles of writing serialized stories.

Just One Drop is an absolute beast. A despairing man is hired to teach a course on Humanity on the Shil'vati homeworld's most exclusive girls' school, which proves to have a disguised princess in attendance, a secret agent posing as a teacher, and a squad of commandos monitoring everything. I've only read 28 chapters of the so-far released 90, and that's already north of 100 000 words. There are dozens of characters, at least a half-dozen subplots going on already, and thankfully the author provides a dramatis personae because otherwise I would never be able to keep up.

The plotting is extremely ambitious, juggling extreme grief and healing, the joys and tribulations of youth, the ideological justifications of an expanding empire, the politics of its aristocratic upper class, multiple spy subplots, and of course, romance. On the other hand, the story is extremely slow. Even after 28 chapters it barely feels like it's started up.

Tom is verging on a Gary Stu. He's got Christ-like forgiveness, professorial education, pedagogical skill, a great cook, musically inclined, big dick. God damn, give him one flaw. The only time he's not wowing people by just existing was when Sephira thought he was an awkward swimmer, but that's the one arena Shil'vati are allowed to outdo humans so it doesn't count. The story also overdoses on quoting dadrock lyrics.

Alien Nation makes Just One Drop look like a bit of flash fiction. Exceeding 600 000 words, I can't be assed to read something so long.

Der Weizenbauer is an alternate history in which the Shil'vati invade Earth at the tail end of WWI. It follows the romance of a crippled German lieutenant and his Shil'vati steward. Since the Earth's technological level is so much lower, the Shil'vati are able to take over almost completely bloodlessly, and the aristocratic organization of Europe slots more neatly into the empire, with the empire reaffirming the position of the nobility. The author's other stories are also in European settings, and he attempts to push back a little against the Amerocentric assumptions of other Sexy Space Babes writers.

Far Away: A man's girlfriend is arrested by an Interior agent on trumped up charges of kidnapping and espionage, likely to be shanked to death before ever making it to trial. Little does she or their tormentor know, he is a former Death's Head medic, and he calls in every favour he has to keep her safe. Weird mix of fluffy and very dark, I just found it kind of uncomfortable.

The Marauder: "Rescued" from cryostasis transport, a man is given the choice of returning to the Imperium for his court martial, or entering debt-bondage in the Consortium, where he joins a group of Nighkru mercenaries (and fucks them). Really not my thing.

With the Hanks: A low ranking Interior agent with terrible luck falls in love with a small town man after being invited to spend Christmas Eve with him and his rambunctious family. Cute.

Lifeguards and Amazons: Stick in the mud Jae and his manwhore twin brother Mae end up teaching a swimming class for Shil'vati. Unlike many other stories, it directly references the events of the original book and includes characters from it, the twins Vieysha and Veiyshi.

The Cook: After being saved from sexual harassment, a depressed cook falls in love with the woman who saved him (and her squadmates). Gets insanely dark toward the end. Like, there are transgressive books where you know the authors know there are lines and are deliberately crossing them, so paradoxically it's insulating from the fuckedupness of what you're reading, your Hoggs and American Psychos. Or there are monotonous jackoff fantasies like The 120 Days of Sodom. Then there are stories where the author casually throws a grenade in your lap and gives no indication that it's a bit unusual.

When I got the double whammy of I was absolutely flabbergasted. What are you even supposed to say to that. The protagonist accepts it, because this is a story about broken people clinging to and healing each other, and if it wasn't for her he'd probably be drinking himself to death on the streets. Maybe this is my judgmental tendencies coming out, but I feel in that situation I'd be torn between running away changing my name and burning off my fingerprints, or searching for the nearest sharp object to cut her throat before committing suicide by cop.

The Piano Man: Years after being violently raped during the invasion, a piano player falls in love with a persistent woman. Sort of similar to The Cook in premise, but plays its cards very differently. It opens with the heavy stuff first, as the pianist , but the rest of the story is comparatively lighthearted and the other characters seem like normal people.

It's funny, even in this setting where 7 foot tall 300 pound women makes it at least physically plausible, this story still needs to resort to the pianist almost being murdered during his rape to make it traumatic. Women non-penetratively raping men might be the final frontier of the imagination. It's so outlandish you have to tack 10 'ands' on to make it stick. While it's not a common motif, to be sure, I can only remember two times the idea actually felt disturbing to me. Cyteen, but the woman was really old so I was kind of imagining my own grandma, and Cherryh's prose style may have been contributing to my nausea. Blood+ had that bit where , but that was more "WTF, can you just put something like that in a TV anime?" than real horror. The way she terminator walked while her clothes were falling off was way too sexy for it to be rightly horrifying. The near-rape scene in To Your Eternity wasn't that disturbing, though Fushi does sometimes act traumatized by the idea of sexual love (vomiting when Kahaku hugged him, and shuddering and remembering Hayase when Mizuha asked him to love her).

1.25/5 stars: This was a buddy read with a fellow co blogger after it came up in our blog group chat. We immediately had to read it. Between Worlds features a 19 year old gary stu who is essentially building his own harem. The writing of the sexual acts was just.... that's not how things work. We got slimy, pulsing insides (yum), thick globules of warm lubricant falling from the females engorged slit that is hanging over the head of his member. There were reverse gender roles in this book but it just didn't work for me. There were a few things I did like.... the armor that locked up and ended the simulation for the recruit (mimicking death), and well, that was about it I guess.

The starting premise of this book is almost a direct copy of Subjugation Universe by James Galloway. That said the remainder of the book focuses more on race and gender roles than the aforementioned and thus the narrative diverges quite a bit. Also of note is that this book also contains more explicit sexual content.

I read this when it was a web serial on Reddit titled Sexy Space Babes. It's hardly high art but it's a very fun little gender role-reversal piece, and it's nice to see an author not go for the usual alien invasion trope where an alien empire crosses the galaxy only to get its ass kicked off Earth by plucky humans. The worldbuilding is excellent: Williams, a.k.a. u/BlueFishcake if you want to read ahead to book two, thinks very critically about the implications of both the society and the technology of the Shil'vati, and the shocks to the system it incurs from conscripting a human.

Plus the sex is wicked fun, too, although I admit I skimmed over one chapter because I don't enjoy male-male.

Surprising good read

This book was a nice fresh read. I enjoyed it a lot. Self published books are often riddled with editing issues, but not this one. Well done Mr Williams!

Some of the best Sci-fi I have read in years, a fresh take on the alien invasion trope, and a there is something for everyone. This is personal opinion as I liked the premise and the way the cultural and gender differences are presented. the protagonist could have been more likeble, although I think I can understand the need for him to be the way he is writen as person who feels out of his depth at the end of the story. I like my heroes more heroic and taking responsibility, but in the case next of the story it makes sense, although reluctantly.
Yaro is best girl and her stance on the matters of the Empire make her more sympathetic to me than Jason. The conclusion of her relationship with the main character was expected and to be honest in a way I think Jason lost the best woman from the whole cast of characters.

The reference to Old Man's war is just a travesty. It's a sci-fi harem'esque book, with juvenile sex and a fantasy male wish fulfillment plot, masquerading as a sci-fi adventure.

MC gets dragooned into enlisting to an alien military that occupied Earth and coincidentally all (or predominantly) women who are depraved of .... male (esp Earth male) company. What follows is a amateurish plot that mostly shows that he is better in bed and in combat (that too against a species that easily invaded Earth)!

Great book!

This was a very surprising book. I got it to be a quick read while bored and now I wish it was a 20 book series. It gives you enough story to be hungry for more and enough of the adult themes that you get your drama fix while still being smart enough to say something important about social norms and comment on gender stereotypes in a way that makes the issues real to someone that has never experienced but not in an overbearing way. And while all of that is enough, this book still has the tits to give me my new favorite sentances about the English language and what it does to other cultures words

You did it.

Well congratulations Mr./Mrs.? Williams you managed to write a gender role reversal novel that was actually immersive - a tall order for the genre considering how hard it is to get the tone, the little details and character development to match up. Excellent blend of what was expected and what likely would/could be. One star off only because it was short but that's just personal preference, I could easily see giving this a 5* too.

It has been a long time since I read John Scalzi's Old Man's War but I'm still pretty sure it wasn't as sexed up as this book. I mention this because the book's product description mentions that it was inspired by Old Man's War, which might put some people off because this book isn't as deep or philosophical.

In this book, Earth has been conquered by an alien species who are humanoid and whose male/female ratio is something like 1:7. So the female aliens act like human males, horny all the time, obsessed about breast size (instead of dick size), and lacking emotional intelligence (when compared to the other sex). The book doesn't go into the biology or the evolutionary psychology behind this, so I wondered if this setup would even work, but this isn't a hard-scifi book and I found it best to just leave my brain at the door and just enjoy the ride.

And it really is an enjoyable ride. While the situation seems pornographic, what with being the lone man sent to boot camp filled with alien women who all look like amazon goddesses and want to have sex, there is also some limited and I think shallow exploration of the gender roles being reversed. As I continued to read, I found myself looking forward to the climax of the character relationships more than the military sci-fi stuff, which doesn't really make sense at times (why would an entire species be claustrophobic?)

I think this is pretty good for what it is; a light, fun, sexy, sci-fi romp.

So as a Marine veteran myself, I gotta say that the portrayal of how bootcamp/basic training was fairly spot on. Brought back a lot of funny fond memories, like having deep conversations in the restroom while someone is taking a poo in one of the stalls was definitely up there.
In terms of how the book was, its always fun to read a gender reversal or role reversal book. It was fun watching Jason squirm and trying to come to terms with the fact that in his new reality he was viewed the same way he viewed women back on Earth.
One reason its only 4 stars though was since this book was originally a series of reddit posts. For whatever reason a whole chapter was omitted from the story. Its not so much a spoiler since you can see the sexual tension between them building up the whole story. But I guess since the primary consumer of these types of books are straight men, having a sex scene that contained the gay might affect sales and was thus omitted.
But other than that, its a really fun read. Even more so if you're a veteran yourself. Its a really spot on depiction of what bootcamp is like.

3.5 stars rounded up. Flawed but ultimately good.

Writing quality: 3.5 stars. Better than average for smut. I always look for red flags like excessive swearing and obnoxious pop culture references, which are frequently used to disguise the author's inexperience conveying emotion and humor. Williams eschews both, for the most part, and their prose is easy to read and hooks you to continue.

Lore/Worldbuilding: 3.5 stars. On the surface, it's a cool premise. Other reviews claim it was stolen from an earlier haremLit but it seems like an improvement. My only issue is that the gender conflicts are simply an exact carbon copy reversal of human gender issues, they don't really add anything new and even the MC is surprised at how everything is the same just opposite. Still, it beats the hell out of isekari. And at least the clumsy addressing of gender roles and gaze is happening at all, which is extremely rare in smut.

Smut quality: 4 stars, really good, high quality sex scenes even with the role reversal.

Smut quantity: 3.5 stars, pretty good. There could be more but it would interfere with the plot and the dynamic the author is trying to establish.

MC: 3.5 stars. He's okay. Still a blank canvas for a lot of the novel. The strangest part is his interactions with Tarcil, the alien male. If you didn't know that this was a hetero haremLit, it would not be shocking to assume that this was intended as a queer M/M romance. The alien girls may think MC is a male tease, but the only person he really teases cruelly is the other male.

It's a variant of the trope where guy shows up and has a magic dick, all the other men are limp dicks which can be found in the Makalang series and many others. Here there's a strange sexual pull between MC, who is pretty sure he's not gay (not quite as adamantly straight as most HaremLit MCs) and Tarcil, which in the hands of other authors would be replaced by machismo and scorn.

Summary: I liked it. I hope the quality stays consistent. I don't know anything about the next two books beyond some of the negative comments here, but I look forward to finding out for myself.

while terrible this was also fairly enjoyable. simple but good enough.

not sure they had a proofreader or editor, and some just hilarious dumb mistakes:

misspelling their own made-up name for the aliens shil'vati and shil'vaati, numerous times in different places.

"perhaps it was too much to hope that Freyxh would leanr a little tact after heart to heart and a little conversation" - a heart to heart means an intimate conversation.

"foretunately, he could soothe his *conscious* with the fact that he did intend to sleep with raisha eventually"

"malting" instead of moulting or molting, since to an american they sound the same. talking about werewolves "malting" hair everywhere.

"jason nearly swallowed his own spit" - dumb. this was supposed to be "inhaled his own spit"

"nobility, who only had to share their single male with one other woman, or none at all" - with one "other" woman means that there are at least two women, but they mean just one woman. incorrect! WRONG! BAD!

A decent story

So it was an interesting premise. Smut was okay. The making the mc bi was... interesting choice, even if done off camera so to speak. The fact it was done in place of some really good potential smut was kind of a let down. The plot mostly carries the book though so not the end of the world.

Some typos but mostly okay. The most annoying thing was the end. It feels like the author took a book and just chopped it at a random page. I suppose it was a semblance of a stopping point but a little weak.

The book is honestly more KU fare, but the sample was decent so thought I'd give it a try. Honestly I don't think I'll continue unless it comes to KU or I catch it on sale. I might change my mind but I have a long list of stuff to read so...

3.5 stars... was in the fence whether to tap 4 or 3 it's okay feel free to give it a try I sing mind what I paid even if I won't get more.

Pretty good

Nothing too out of ordinary, but good read nevertheless. Aliens overtook earth with advanced weapons. They are an empire. They are bigger, stronger and most are female. The twist is the universe is mainly female 10 to 1 ratio. MC drunkenly picks fight with alien and wins. Gets drafted into alien marines. Most of book takes place in basic training.

My only complaint is he is an idiot. So slow to adapt to anything foreign. For example, he was told repeatedly not to be alone in the city or you will be kidnapped or raped. He could not believe it. Second, he had to "soul search" for 60 pages to see if he wanted to sleep with hot alien girls or keep flirting with the other male in the book. For the first 50 pages I thought this was a boy love novel.Im still concerned book 2 could end up that way.

In spite of the MCs failings I'll give book 2 a shot.

Actually extremely awesome

I certainly enjoyed this book. The make female role reversal is of course The most fun. This book does shine a light on Some less savory male female human interactions by using The sexy yet strong Amazon aliens has a proxy. That said The story was also fun. Obviously this is just a basis for a new series And There are many ways that I can go.It seems that Jason will see a lot of sex in the imperium but that's not surprising considering. However references were made that many of the other races were Female dominated as well. This book is purely about boot camp And as such there are no clues where the story line will head but if It is written as well as this one it will be a fun enjoyable and entertaining story. I look forward to the next installment.

I wish I was Jason. :)
I think the world building is on point, I can see why this story gave origin to a subreddit with many stories taking place in this universe.
I didn't really like how Jason managed his harem, I wanted him to do things differently, but this one is nitpicking.
I loved the chapter were , and I loved the older women on this book,.
He should
Btw, he should romance
Anyway, cool book.

Looking forward to book 2

Humanity taken over by aliens is always an interesting storyline. Throw in a human being dumped into the said alien military complex and it gets more interesting, but not really new. Now make it that females are the dominant group throughout the universe and that humanity is a weird one with males being the alpha of the sexes and it does get interesting, really interesting. Our hero is a bit of a screw up, but that just makes him more likable. The story is pretty much set around his time at boot-camp, so I am looking forward to book 2 and to where he will end up being posted. The world building and character development is excellent with some of the secondary characters getting some good page time.

The manliness taken out of the mail

I bought this book for the the Mechs shown on the cover but this isn't a book about heavy Max apparently it seems to be a book about taking the mail out of the man gender swapping reversal of genders where the male is treated as the female and the mail has become so effeminate that the mail can no longer be seen but killed this story for me is where the MC is experiencing his first break from monotonous training and his idea to get on with one of the females is to become completely effeminate where he pulls his shirt up just to below his right nipple exactly as a woman who wants to get it on with dude this is not how I envisioned this novel going it is not what I am interested in

Really enjoyed this book

Great read. The book is around average length for a book in this genre, but I finished it in a single Saturday. The whole clash or cultures and the situations it provides had me laughing at times and squirming with building tension at others. I am eager to see where the overarching story goes in the next books. It is good that I’m still not sure if I want him to truly join up with the Purps or fight against them, which is a good place to be at the end of a first book!

A really good book. Kind of a role reversal situation. The Earth has been conquered by another race. They were defeated 7 years ago. Those bastards had the audacity to run the world better than the humans. They have gotten rid of poverty, helped cure cancer and given the earth new technology. Still humans being what they are they are upset about losing. The MC is a guy that feels that way. He gets drunk one night and challenges an alien to a fight and wins. This causes a problem. He gets labeled a rebel and the only way out is for him to join their military if he doesn't want to go to prison. This is mainly a political maneuver. The are a couple of issues. One is that all other alien species have a gender split of 8:1 female to male. That means that almost all the women in the military are female and they are all sex crazed and act just like men. So now the MC is surrounded by a bunch of hot Amazonian alien women who want to fuck, fight and do those two things over again. They are the ones that conquered his world though so he has a dilemma. He also doesn't like being treated like a hot piece of ass that can't take care of himself and needs a woman to defend him. Overall a good read.

Enjoyed it

Kept wanting to see what happened next. Had some enders game vibes but definitely not similar. I wanted more military action from the story. I thought of enders game and full metal jacket with all the training but there didn't come some epic climax. At least not one I was hoping for. Lol.
The ending training was still fun but it was short. As soon as it gets good it's just cut off. I'll probably read the second book but I crave more action/military tactics. Or even more lore from the aliens and deep space they know.

Downright interesting

The psycho/social ramifications of *humans* being the sexy aliens...wild.

Very well written. A human male dealing with being the prey in social settings.

I think the story could have done very well even without the harem-esque subplot. In many ways, this is better SF than a lot of modern SF. Really digging into what makes people act certain ways.

I am interested in reading a sequel. Not sure how the plot will continue to develop.

Looking forward to the next book!

Very good start at worldbuilding! As others have said, it is a book that raises questions about human social structure and interaction that deserve to be looked at and thought through. While the love scenes were hot, the real heart of the story was in the relationships built between the troops and I, for one, am very much looking forward to the next volume in this series.

Impressively Good

I found this to be a lot more intelligent, considered, objective, and tasteful than anticipated. The invaders are relatable and believable, the conquest realistically incomplete, the characters rounded, the reactions tastefully handled, and the relationships correctly awkward. The love scenes are graphic but not tasteless, each adding meaningfully to the book.
I look forward to were the author goes with this series.

Loved it

I wasn’t sure I’d like this book the description wasn’t the best in my mind. That being said I loved it. It is a little along the lines of Delvers or The honor of Duty where the women are the fighters and the men are the weaker sex(at least in the eyes of the women running everything).

Very good read

A really interesting book in that it offers a very different image of what would happen if the earth was conquered by a warrior race Of women. Where the women are the warriors and the more dominant sex. Really great read and am definitely looking forward to book 2 to see what else Jason gets into.

Nice start.

This was a very fun read. I am looking forward to see how the MC grows. Will he be an elite soldier with a squad? Will he have to go back to earth and fight against his fellow people? I really don’t think He should do that. Will he be your covert operative that take down the two other empires? I guess we’ll have to wait a few months to see what the author gives us.
