Wendy L. Anderson is a writer of passionately charged fantasy. Breaking the barriers of typical fantasy themes, she created the Kingdom of Jior epic fantasy series. A lusty and poetic five-book series that will have you wanting more in her Legends of Everclearing spinoff series. Inspired by authors such as Robert E. Howard and Morgan Llywelyn, Wendy went on to write three other stand-alone works; A Cut Twice as Deep, Ulrik, and Rapunzel's Tower. These fantasy works break free from the usual boundaries of fantasy genres.
A Colorado native and mother of two; she has decided it is time to write down the fantasies from her mind. Writing about everything from fantastical worlds to the stuff of her dreams she takes her stories along interesting paths while portraying characters and worlds she sees in her mind's eye. Her goal is to deviate from common themes, write in original directions and transport her reader to the worlds of her creation.

I received a free copy of Ulrik from the author for an honest review.

After reading A Cut Twice As Deep, I was extremely excited to be reading another of Anderson's books. I did however think that there was no way Anderson could write a better story than A Cut Twice as Deep seeing as I had rated it a solid 5 out of 5 and told all my friends about it. How wrong was I?

Ulrik was INCREDIBLE!

A very unique blend of Romance, Fantasy, and Science Fiction - my three favourite genres, the author begins telling this beautifully written story by introducing us to two characters; Tessa and Ulrik. Ulrik is an 11th century Viking and Tessa is an elderly woman from the present day. After Ulrik's ship gets lost at sea back in the 11th Century, and Tessa has a heart attack in her care home bed, both characters find themselves in a different dimension, brought to the surface of a 'sacred lake' and both younger and healthier than their previous lives.

A beautiful, romantic journey begins between Ulrik and Tessa as they survive together in the beautiful mountains of this new dimension. As the story continues and their relationship develops, Ulrik and Tessa venture away from their home. This new adventure introduces new characters and epic storylines that challenges the characters and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Like the last time I read a novel by Wendy L. Anderson, I felt myself waking up and thinking about the book straight away, and taking the book out whenever was possible - walking to work (mind the lampposts), lunch break, stuck in a traffic jam on the motorway... I just couldn't put it down. I also ended up feeling the emotions that the characters were feeling; I was becoming anxious for the characters, laughing with them and worrying about them when they were not in the chapter I was reading.

The author really has talent. The fact that Anderson is able to write an epic story filled with lovable, genuine and unique characters, is able to create a new world and describe settings so immensely it is like you are actually there, along with combining three genres perfectly, AND making the reader NEED a sequel, really does prove that the author has such unbelievable talent and a natural gift for writing.

Hands down, one of the best books I have EVER read.

Gripping!!

Not what I expected at all.  From the first appearance of Tessa in the lake, I was hooked. This tale progresses at a rapid pace, delicately revealing details as you go along to answer questions that the reader may have.  The scenes with the Alahemway and the meadwhey really dug into my thoughts; couldn't put it down for these chapters, with a resounding "What is going on?" urging me on.  I loved it.  A perfect fantasy book, encompassing time travel, realistic protagonists and an entwining love story that lasts through the ages.  Have to say that Bondur was my favourite!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It pulled me right in with all the adventure and action. The story is about a Viking man from the 11th century and a woman from our time who ends up stuck in an unknown time period from the past. I liked how they had to figure out how to survive together and how their love grew, even though they came from such different worlds.
The idea of time travel was exciting, but sometimes I didn’t fully get how it worked or why certain things happened the way they did. Some of it felt a little confusing, but it didn’t ruin the story for me. What I really loved was how it gave both characters a second chance at life and love. That made it feel hopeful and special.
The writing was easy to read, and there was never a dull moment. There were fights, tense moments, sweet and sexy parts, too. If you like romance mixed with danger and a bit of magic, you will probably like this book a lot. It was a fun ride, and I had a really hard time putting it down.

The newest read by Anderson is a story built on a unique combination of Fantasy, Romance, and Science Fiction. As is typical for Anderson, it is beautifully written and vividly described, encouraging the reader to visualize the intriguing setting. The story provides enough edge and sexual tension to keep the reader thoroughly engaged

In the book, the characters live in a different dimension than the earth we live in, some have arrived by time travel and some are natives to the area. The primary character is Ulrik, an 11th century Viking. While sailing the seas with Leif Erickson, Ulrik’s ship goes down in a violent stormy swell. Ulrik awakes to find that he is not dead but has been banished by the gods to live alone in a strange land. The story is one of survival and discovery as Ulrik adjusts to the land and all the land has to offer.

I cannot say enough about Anderson as an author. Her work is simply delightful to read, full of intense risk and sexual energy. Her characters are complete with flaws as well as extraordinary personalities, whether good or evil. The setting is always described in a visually graphic manner making it quite easy to be a part of the story. This is truly a great blend of Science Fiction, romance, and fantasy.

I read Ulrik after hearing about it in Gee Liz Reads blog. The book certainly didn't disappoint, and kept me reading throughout.

A great mix of fantasy and romance, along with a tweak of history and sci-fi meant that the plot line was full of unexpected turns, I really couldn't have predicted how it would have developed and ended from the first chapter.

The descriptions of the charcters were very detailed and the growing relationships were well explained, I would have liked a little more introspection from the charcters in the second half, as it worked so well to bond you with the storyline in the early parts of the book.

A happy ending and a happy reader. I would read a book by Wendy L Anderson again.

Ulrik by Wendy L. Anderson is a excellent combination of fantasy, romance, and sci-fi. This kind of novel is totally up my alley, and this isn’t my first read by Wendy L. Anderson. I couldn’t pass up reading Ulrik when I got the email. I’m so excited that I took the opportunity.

Wendy L. Anderson’s writing is absolutely beautiful. It is so easy to get lost in her writing. I was intrigued from the beginning and I was obsessed until the end.

I think this is such a unique plot. There is time travel, and wonderful world-building. The characters are also incredible. I love the romance plotline as well. It was so easy to connect to the characters and so easy to get lost in this story.

I love Ulrik. Don’t miss out on this book! Highly recommended!!!

As is the style of Anderson, you are immediately enmeshed in a beautifully described world and characters. Anderson writes in full 4D for this book. Using time travel and renewal as main themes Ulrik and Tessa face the challenges of a dimension beyond their homes as well as beyond their basic knowledge. The continuing struggle of their survival and ability to thrive are central.

A plan to help a dying race will come to challenge Ulrik and his entire family. Come for the characters but stay for the adventure.

I have enjoyed a previous series written by this author and very much liked that she is expanding her repertoire. I can’t wait to see what's next.

Wendy L Anderson absolutely nails everything that I love about romance fantasy in this really hot adventure. Ulrik is exactly the kind of brooding, impossibly handsome warrior who, I assume, makes modern women question their life choices. Anderson writes him with all the savage intensity that requires.
The time travel element really works beautifully here. She steers clear of overthinking it and uses it as a tool that enables her characters to make interesting choices. She keeps the focus where it belongs: on the hot chemistry between her leads. I love strong women in books, and the heroine is that, and more, without being annoyingly stubborn. She also holds her own against Ulrik's overwhelming Viking masculinity.
Every romance lover knows how these stories go, but Anderson elevates the usual tropes with genuinely steamy scenes that'll have you wishing this were a paper copy so you could fan yourself with your pages. The historical details feel authentic without being overly lecture-heavy, and the inclusion of Norse mythology adds just enough fantasy flavor to keep things interesting.
The pacing doesn’t drag, which is honestly a miracle in this genre, where authors often tend to pad their word counts. Anderson clearly understands that readers want passion, adventure, and enough emotional angst to keep the pages turning, but not so much that we're rolling our eyes.
This is comfort reading at its finest; pure escapist fantasy that delivers exactly what the book promises. If you love alpha Vikings, time-crossed lovers, and romance that makes you believe in destiny, Ulrik is your next obsession. Anderson has created another winner that proves Viking romance will never get old.

Best Viking Time Travel Fantasy

Ulrik is a Viking that wishes to his God Odin for a woman to call his own. He finds a girl who he calls the lake maiden, Tessa - she is an 85 year old 21st century woman that has traveled back in time and has landed in a body of water. Ulrik helps her get to shore and then takes her back to his cabin to warm up. Ulrik helps Tessa find clothing, shelter, food, and takes care of the necessities for her. Ulrik became friends and lovers with Tessa. He told her about his ex-wife Ingrid and Ingrid's lover, Snorri Sigurdsson, who tried to kill him and take his gold. Ulrik killed Snorri and then sent Ingrid away. Now that Ulrik and Tessa are together, Tessa tells Ulrik that her old life in the 21st century she was an 85 year old woman, and here in Viking times, she was a young maiden with regular cycle, she would like to give Ulrik a son, but is not certain that is possible.

Ulrik and Tessa get ambushed by a rival Viking clan. Ulrik gets force on the chief's wife, Mohem, who is wanting to get pregnant, and Tessa is not allowed near Ulrik. Ulrik and Tessa leave, they have twin boys, Hunter and Archer. Mohem helps as a midwife and apologizes to them. Tessa later has a daughter named Emmer. Ulrik, Tessa and Hunter, Archer and Emmer are from Meadway, and get into an altercation with a spoiled princess Tahara from Alemwhey, who wants Meadway village raided and burned to the ground. Tahara also wants to take away Emmer's beau, Bondur and keep him for herself. Will Ulrik and Tessa be able to last the test of time? How will their children ever survive the warring Viking clans?

I really enjoyed Ulrich, a fantasy Viking time-travel story with a unique and compelling premise. Right from the start, I got strong Adam and Eve vibes. The book begins with Ulrich and Tessa, who are plucked from unfulfilling lives on Earth and transported to an entirely different Earth. Ulrich was a former Viking, while Tessa was from a nursing home in the 21st century. I was captivated by how their connection grew as they fell in love and started a family in this new land. The beginning was actually my favorite part—I loved the intimacy, the romance, and the sense of starting fresh. As the story progressed, things became more complicated and dangerous as they discover other people. Their children’s struggles added depth and drama, making it feel like an epic saga; I especially enjoyed their daughter, Emmer's, story. The story spans generations and is filled with rich romance and steamy scenes. Wendy excels at building strong relationships and crafting emotionally compelling stories. Highly original and definitely worth reading!
