Marie Brennan a.k.a. M.A. Carrick

Marie Brennan is a former anthropologist and folklorist who shamelessly pillages her academic fields for material. She recently misapplied her professors' hard work to Turning Darkness Into Light, a sequel to the Hugo Award-nominated series The Memoirs of Lady Trent. As half of M.A. Carrick, she is also the author of The Mask of Mirrors, first in the Rook and Rose trilogy. For more information, visit swantower.com, Twitter @swan_tower, or her Patreon.

Eh, not my favourite entry so far but far from bad I'd say. I guess it's just a matter of preference

New Worlds, Year Three: More Essays on the Art of Worldbuilding - Marie Brennan
Rating: ★★★ ½

Award-winning fantasy author and former anthropologist Marie Brennan now offers her New World patrons monthly topic polls. These 53 essays were published each week between March 2019 and February 2020.

While this collection included some great essays, I enjoyed it a bit less than the first two volumes in this series. Some topics were very specialised (Locks… and How to Pick Them comes to mind) and there seemed to be less references to existing works throughout. My favourite essays were the two-parter on Exposition and The Map Is Not the Terrain. The essay about Plagues (published in July 2019) was oddly prescient.

“I’ve lost count of how many times now I’ve started to write an essay on a certain subject and realized halfway through that actually, I need to break it up into multiple sections.”
