The Aesthetic Face of Being: Art in the Theology of Pavel Florensky

Rate this book
Fr Pavel Florensky (1882-1937) was a talented figure of Russia's Silver Age, whose interests included mathematics and engineering, philosophy, theology and linguistics. Patriotic and religious, he laboured to serve his country, even under Communism, without, however, renouncing his priesthood. He was ultimately arrested, imprisoned and sentenced to death by firing squad.

Finished Victor Bychkov's THE AESTHETIC FACE OF BEING: ART IN THE THEOLOGY OF PAVEL FLORENSKY. Bychkov's essay is a useful introduction to the religious philosophy of Russian Orthodox priest, Pavel Florensky. I recommend Bychkov's analysis for anyone wanting to understand Orhodox iconography. Wrote Florensky, "God is precisely the Highest Beauty, through communion with Whom everything becomes beautiful...Everything is beautiful in a person when he turns toward God, and everything is ugly when he is turned away from God.”
