A Painted Lily

Rate this book
From the multiple-award winning author of A WHISPER OF SMOKE, award finalist A PAINTED LILY tells the story of Tony, a Cuban-American man who searches for the secret to his past when he travels to Cuba with his best friend Becca, a woman with a soft spot for his immigrant history and his damaged heart. But while Tony is surrounded by ghosts of the Cuban revolution, Becca embarks on her own surprising journey. And by the time the answers are in reach, the past catches them in its grip, forever changing their future.

"Author Angela Hoke has spun a web of family secrets, unrequited love, [and] harsh reality, all gently blended with a touch of romance.... Stunning! Such a pleasure to read." -- Reader's Favorite

Tony Ramirez is a high-end real estate agent living the fast life in Miami, while his best friend Becca, social worker extraordinaire, does her best to keep him grounded, without revealing why she's so invested - her secret hopeless love for him. Hopeless because he's dark and beautiful, and she is... ordinary, but it's a relationship that has its perks, including a default salsa dancing partner and someone that can reach the top shelves. From Tony's standpoint, he's highly self-involved but not very self-aware, including about best friends that secretly love him, or how his disconnection to his past as a Cuban immigrant whose family fled Cuba in 1961, soon after Castro's regime took over, are deeply rooted in his inability to be happy. But then a tragedy rocks his family, and he discovers that he and his oldest brother Pedro actually were left behind when his family fled his birth country, and only came to the U.S. as part of Operation Pedro Pan, a crusade by the Catholic Church to save Cuban children by helping them escape to the United States. And suddenly things make more sense - why he's never felt good enough, and why he can't trust anyone but Becca. But it doesn't answer the biggest question -- how could they have left him behind?

As Tony's search for truth takes them into the past and to beautiful, tortured Cuba, only Becca's friendship can help him unlock the secrets that will change his world. But while Tony searches his soul, and his past, for answers, Becca's devotion is pushed to its limits, as she finds herself on her own journey. And in the land of Tony's birth, a land suspended in time, Becca may find a path to a new future - one that may or may not include Tony.

Angela is the author of upmarket (i.e., book club) women’s/contemporary fiction. Her award-winning novels explore coming of age, generational secrets, and redefining self as well as unrequited love, dysfunctional families, and living with mental illness (among other themes), but always with an empathy that respects the complexity of the human experience and a huge helping of heart. While she spent many years working her way up the corporate ranks in accounting and finance, writing has been her passion ever since she wrote, edited and distributed a neighborhood newspaper at the age of eight (which, incidentally, was a big success until an exposé written based on sketchy facts shut her down for good). A Whisper of Smoke was her debut novel, and winner of the 2015 National Indie Excellence Book Award for Women's Fiction, the 2014 GRW Maggie Award for Excellence (women's fiction with strong romantic elements), the 2014 Heart of Denver Aspen Gold Award (women's fiction with strong romantic elements) and the 2015 Readers' Favorite Gold Medal for Women's Fiction. It was also a finalist in the 2015 International Book Awards for Women's Fiction. A Painted Lily was awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2017 Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards. Angela's most recent women's fiction novel, Missing Pictures (released in 2021), is "a raw, emotional foray into the harrowing and yet hilarious capriciousness of mental illness... a novel that can meet you at your darkest moment and give you the power to decide to save your own life." She lives in Nashville, Tennessee with her family, a neurotic but sweet Yorkie, and a Black Lab rescue who slobbers and hogs the bed. This was a beautiful book which really explored the friendship between Becca and Tony, as Tony goes on a trip to Cuba to discover the truth about his birth.
I'd like to thank Voracious Readers for introducing me to this author, by sending me a free copy.
The details of Havana really bring the book to life, and the ending had me in tears!!

Sweet mercy, this book kind of broke my heart. Honest, well-written and intensely moving, it was hard to not fall right into the plot.

Becca and Tony have been best friends for years. While Becca is a true Southern girl, Tony’s family escaped Cuba just as Castro began his reign. He has found success in the United States, but when his brother, Pedro, unexpectedly passes away, family tensions rise and Tony finds himself on a mission to discover truth about his childhood. Armed with a photo, a handful of files and a whole lot of prayers, he and Becca travel to Cuba to uncover long hidden family secrets and along the way, discover some truths about themselves as well.

Ugh, my heart literally hurt in parts of this novel. I love Becca – she’s such a beautiful character and happily not annoying in her slight naivety. Tony is a shameless flirt and self-confirmed bachelor, yet there’s something about him that is also immensely honest. The relationship they share is complicated, and at times, a little messy, but the growth between them never took away from the main plot of finding out Tony’s childhood. I applaud the balance Hoke was able to maintain in this as it allowed me to enjoy the book as so much more than just a romance. I thought the writing was beautifully done and there were moments I felt I was right in story with Becca and Tony. Well done. Emotional, deep, and thoroughly moving, I very much enjoyed this novel. I will mention there were some odd editing errors in my version, but it definitely did not detract from the story at all. I will be looking for more from this author!

Thank you Voracious Readers and Angela Hoke for my copy!

This is a beautiful story about love of all kinds -- family, friends, and soul mates. It's simultaneously devastating and heartwarming.

Overall, the story kept things moving, though it still seemed like progress was slow. I can't say it really gripped me and pulled me in. But that said, it was a good read, I enjoyed the story, and the whole time I wanted to go salsa dancing and research a trip to Cuba.

🙊 A few curse words
🌶 Talk of sex (not explicit), only kissing

A Painted Lily

At the beginning, I almost gave up on this book, but decided to persevere. The further I read, the more invested I became in the story. It’s a complex love story, and the unexpected twist towards the end is particularly poignant. Definitely worth reading, especially if you have any interest in what life may have been like in Cuba since 1961.

The book portrays a very touching story of an American Cuban who was driven to unearth the truth behind the circumstances of his passage to the United States from Cuba only to discover his true parentage. Superimposed on this poignant account about the search for one's real roots is the simmering relationship between Tony and Becca which appeared to be one sided at first glance until eventually the other party realized his inequity and confessed his heart’s desires.

This incredible narrative has a gentle yet powerful hook that pulls you right from the start and goads you to keep on turning the pages until you reach the surprising climax. The writer puts you under her spell with her inspiring and noteworthy chronicling skills! A Painted Lily is by good measure a wonderful blend of romance and adventure.

This is another wonderfully rich, deeply moving story from Angela Hoke. It tells the story of one family, where long-kept secrets have a terrible, lingering effect on the relationships. I was immediately drawn in and felt as if I were there watching as the story unfolded.

With thoughtfully written characters, interwoven with bits of history, this emotional story grips you and stays with you long after you’ve finished reading it. I highly recommend this book, along with this author’s previous work, A Whisper of Smoke.

What a delightful story of Tony traveling back to Cuba to find out why him & his brother were left behind when his family left there years ago. Easy reading. It kept me wanted to read more and more to find out what happened. Thanks to Vicarious Readers for this amazing book. Can’t wait to read another story by Angela Hoke.

I received this as a free download. This has a great story to it and is written excellently. I wasn’t expecting the huge twist in it. I’m hoping there will be a second book because I want to know what happens to the characters next.

“A Painted Lily” is a poignant story that blends personal discovery, unexpressed love, and the lasting impact of history into an emotional journey. It follows two intertwined paths: Tony Ramirez’s quest to understand his Cuban heritage and Becca’s steadfast devotion that leads her toward her own transformation.

Tony, a charming Miami real estate star, seems to have it all, but beneath his polished exterior lies significant turmoil. Learning that he and his brother were part of Operation Pedro Pan reshapes his identity and forces him to confront deep-seated questions about abandonment and belonging. His return to Cuba becomes a reckoning with his past and the parts of himself he has yet to discover.

Becca is the heart of the novel, serving as a social worker whose emotional landscape is generous and self-sacrificing. Her unvoiced love for Tony creates tension, but her journey evolves as she learns to define her own story in Cuba, challenging her devotion and exploring a future that may not center on him.

The setting of Cuba acts almost as a character, capturing the nation’s contradictions and reflecting Tony and Becca’s emotional crossroads.

Overall, “A Painted Lily” explores identity, friendship, and love, raising essential questions about our past and the possibility of healing. This thoughtful and romantic narrative lingers long after the final page.

Try it.

A warm, sensitive story of friendship turned love story. Tony, the son of Cuban emigres in Florida, is a self-made man who derives his self-esteem from the trappings of wealth with which he surrounds homself. Although from a large family, he has always felt an outsider and this has led him to keep an emotional distance from everyone in his life. The only person he lets close to him, apart from his mother, is his best friend Becca Jackson. When Tony's mother dies, and then his older brother, he is left with a need to find the answers to his inner sense of worthlessness. Becca, who has always saved everyone in her life, wants to save her best friend too. She is madly in love with him, but has convinced herself that she is not up to parr to his bimbo girlfriends, and has accepted that their relationship will only ever be platonic. Why is it then that she can't seem to date other guys?

A sudden trip to Cuba together will open both their eyes to what they really want, but not before both their hearts are broken, and they must find a way to heal the rift that has grown between them.

An obvious love story, but a lovely portrayal of friendship and family, set against the Cuban diaspora.

I really enjoyed this story as a friends to lovers with a lot of real life in between. I normally prefer some spice when I’m reading but I didn’t mind that it didn’t have any. The authors writing was so descriptive and I enjoy the dual perspective. This was a well written story about finding yourself.

Tony is a high-end real estate agent living in Miami, while his best friend Becca, a social worker, is always there to support him and is hopelessly in love with him. They end up taking a trip to Cuba to discover more about Tony’s past after his mother and brother pass away. There is so much that happens in Cuba that makes Tony and Becca realize what they want in life.

Although some of it was predictable I loved how the story turned out with Tony, his father, and Becca. I just wish there was an epilogue because I really wanted more.

This story unpacks how family secrets and dishonesty can lead to feelings of doubt in ourselves. The story is a beautiful depiction of Cuba and the authenticity of the people is a testament to the writing. I genuinely felt transported to the colourful Cuban streets and was invested in the journey. I felt for Tony and Becca with every dead end they came across when searching for the truth. And the heart-wrenching decisions that were made. It is a beautiful story of family, culture and doing what you think is best to protect the people you care about and finding love for yourself and those who love you through thick and thin. I would highly recommend this book! Especially for anyone searching for themselves or questioning their identity. I received this book complimentary from the author through Voracious Readers Only.

Excellent book. A love story with unexpected twists and turns. Being a lover or romance novels, this book was sweet, charming, and had the "Happily Ever After" that you expect.

This book has serious formatting issues, for me anyway. Paragraphs were separated throughout the entire novel. Formatting issues aside, the book was well written, the places depicted in the book were spot on (I have traveled to Mexico and Cuba). And it was a very enjoyable read.

Angela Hoke captures your attention from the very first chapter. This novel reminded me of being on vacation having my toes in the sand, and my nose in a book.

The novel was supplied via Voracious Readers Only and I will read other novels by this author. I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars because of the formatting issues.

Quite a heavy story of life, love and struggles. Of choices we make. How they influence generations in the future.

The pain of unrequited love and the toll it can take on a person. Suddenly the realisation of the very thing you have been looking for is staring you right in the face. Suddenly realising if you don't act and grovel you may very well lose that most precious thing.

At times wanted to throw the book across the room. Was so frustrated at Tony and loved the faith and strength Becca had in him. Until she broke then I yelled Becca get away from him. My heart broke for her.

Like all good stories it did have a happy ending, the reader is left to decide what happens next. Personally I hoped they grew old together and told their children and Grandchildren the story of their life.

While Tony somewhat reluctantly seeks answers to his past in Cuba, he is accompanied by his friend Becca who secretly loves him. "And then I smile at him, because that's what I do. I smile at people to make them feel better, stop worrying. I smile at them with insistence, until they can't help but smile back, and then we're both smiling and looking ridiculous and no one's really saying what's actually going on."
Self-centered and feeling betrayed, Tony finds the truth was not at all what he expected, and learns forgiveness and true love.
A good read, would recommend.

Tony Ramirez, born in Cuba and raised in America, is
on a journey to discover the truth about his life. He is supported in his quest by his best friend Becca. The two travel to Cuba in an attempt to find out answers to Tony’s past. They end up discovering more than that!
I enjoyed reading this book, particularly the scenes set in Cuba. The best part for me was when, in a glorious moment of epiphany, Tony realises he is being an idiot and sets about making amends.

I received this book from Voracious Readers Only in exchange for an honest review. I had a hard time deciding whether to give this a 3 or 4. Honestly, it’s a bit clichéd and sometimes the plot is incredulous. It could have use a proofreader — a character Geoffrey becomes Gregory three pages later.
But despite all this, I enjoyed this book! It’s a light entertaining read, with well-developed characters. I guessed the secret a while before it was revealed yet I wanted to keep on reading and the way it was revealed was heartbreaking. It would make a wonderful beach read.

This is an interesting book. I thought it was going to be boring when it said about a journey to Cuba but it's been pleasantly surprising. There's humour, it's well written, the relationship between two friends is very well described, the bond they share which turns into something else. I don't think it should have ended where it did, I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next. It's a good read.

This book was about one man’s adventure to find out the truths of his past in Cuba. His female best friend goes on the trip with him to support him through the difficult and emotional truths and they have to face the reality of their relationship and their feelings. I was not crazy about the way the main character, Tony, treats his best friend, Becca, but men can be very stupid when it comes to relationships and feelings.

Complimentary copy received from Voracious Readers Only in return for an honest review.

Lovely well written story set in America and Cuba. Romance wise there is an obligatory dense male hero and cute overlooked heroine but it works well with little schmaltz.

Story plot is based on familial secrets and why they are kept.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading it 😊
