Malicious Magic: An Urban Fantasy Adventure

Rate this book
An ex-cult member and an ex-god walk into a bar… or rather, a famed lost city.

My name is Emery Morgan, and I can tell you exactly where the city of Atlantis is. Hint: it’s not at the bottom of an ocean.

For two years I’ve been exiled from the Atlantis Realm. Why? I committed a crime, and that was believing blindly in the wrong people.

Now, I intend to return and make amends. With the help of a highly questionable ex-god, I succeed in the return part but manage to commit a new crime. Yep—an excellent start to my betterment plan.

Forced to work for the city of Atlantis to retrieve a stolen and magical crown jewel, I must face ghosts, thieves, and avoid the police. Yet all that pales compared to the cruel magic that’s too closely connected to my past.

If my new and reluctant ex-god partner and I don’t deliver the gem, we risk being exiled and sent back Earthside. And that is if we even survive an onslaught of enslaved spirits…

Think Atlantis sank to the bottom of an ocean? Keep believing that—or read Malicious Magic to join the adventure!

“Malicious Magic” marks the start to G.K. Lund’s fantasy series “Atlantis Outcasts”, which puts a brand-new twist on the myth of Atlantis. In Lund’s series, Atlantis is very much real and still around. Emery Morgan (MC) comes back to the city after two years in exile as punishment for her crime. While Emery is trying to make amend the idea somehow backfires, and has her committing a new crime, which forces her to work for the city. Her assignment is to retrieve a magical crown jewel, or risk to be exiled again. Emery has her work cut out for herself, evade the police, fight the ghosts, outsmart the thieves, and keep her reluctant partner happy, lest the ex-god becomes more trouble than help.

G.K. Lund has crafted a very interesting plot interweaving elements of mystery, relic hunting, fantasy, and paranormal romance into an intriguing and very well-written story, with captivating characters and , despite its mythologic background, highly credible setting. A fast-paced, action packed story, that brings the reader right into the action along with the MCs, taking part into the hunt and fevering towards the resolution, while ducking along with Emery to elude each trap. An amazing series, interesting, imaginative, and unique.

Malicious Magic was an average read for me overall. The humor was easily the strongest element and added a lot of personality to the story, giving it moments that were genuinely entertaining. I also appreciated the urban fantasy setting and the energy the premise had going in.

That said, the action felt uneven and never quite delivered the impact I was hoping for. The plot itself was decent, but it stayed fairly predictable and didn’t rise above being just okay. I found myself wanting more tension, more momentum, and a stronger sense of urgency to really keep the story moving.

In the end, this was a perfectly passable book with some enjoyable moments, but it didn’t fully stand out for me. Readers who enjoy humor-driven urban fantasy may get more out of it than I did, but for my taste, it landed solidly at three stars.

A glorious mix of different myths and legends blended into a wonderful storyline, fast paced and entertaining, Atlantis and Viking gods, supernatural creatures, magic gems and witchcraft this story has it all. I flew through this book and loved every second, great characters with the sarcastic sense of humour I like in characters, an intelligent story set in a well constructed and described world that comes to life off the page. I was sorry it ended. I am looking forward to more in this series
I enjoyed it so much I bought the book anyway

Malicious Magis is first book of new series Atlantis outcasts by G.K. Lund. I wasn't sure what to expect so I was little afraid. But it was unnecessary. I was suck ed into the story since begginig and couldn't put it down. Main character, Emery, is sympathic, brave and during story became also sassy. Her interactions with ex-god, who became her working partner, were hilarious- I just loved mention about his past.
It was quick read and I can't wait for second book.

Malicious Magic is the first book in a new series Atlantis Outcasts. This book has a really fresh take on the mythology of Atlantis and I really enjoyed it. I was pulled into the storyline right away it flows really well. The MC Emery is sympathic, brave and endearing something I really like to see and a little snarky sass never hurts either. I love the banter with her work partner and ex-god (who knew that could be a thing) so funny!
I am looking forward to more in the series.

Bored

I was a little bored when reading this book. There are action scenes and a problem to solve. I just could not get into it. I did not have any major issues with Emery. She seemed like she would develop to be a good hero. I did wish that there were more scenes with Loki.

I did not hate it. I just did not love it.

Good read

This book has humor, action, danger, magic, and no sex or romance. The two main characters are forced into government service in order to stay free in Atlantis, and the "mission" they are sent on is suicidal. Recommended for lovers of Urban Fantasy.

The book was fun and easy to read, and overall I found the characters and storyline engaging. There just wasn't quite enough there for me to want to continue the series, though, which is rare for me and why I ended up at 3 stars I think.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

2.25

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: Possibly.

Would you recommend?: Not sure

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
