There’s this mundane yet reminiscent feel that came when I was reading this collection of short stories. It tugs the heartstrings at moments you would have thought you expected—but it does so stealthily, hiding behind the author’s writing that depicts reality as is, and thereby leaving us to some state of shock, loss, nostalgia…all at once.
My problem with short stories are usually, well, finding them too short. But Joy Dayrit knows her craft well. She gives answers, or somewhat of a closure that resembles one, in most, if not all, her stories. I’m always content with moving onto the next.
My favorites from this collection are: Playing Goddess, A Bedtime Art Story, The Walk, and Light. Especially A Bedtime Art Story! I’d give that five stars.
Overall, I’m rating this a 4.5. I haven’t heard of the author’s works beside this collection, but it was a refreshing surprise since I enjoyed reading this! I would reread this as well on another day, if given the chance. I wonder if the author had other works as well published before that weren’t included in this collection. I may just trust the editor that this may be her best work.
Note: This collection includes The Walk, in addition to new entries by Joy Dayrit. I almost bought both of her works by mistake haha
