2194 Days of War provides a summary of the main events for nearly every day of the Second World War, with longer, more detailed sections on particularly significant offensives. There are also small articles about contemporary books, films and celebrities.

I decided to read the summary of each day exactly seventy-six years after it had happened, starting with the 1st September 1939 and ending with the final Japanese capitulation on 2nd September 1945. Consequently, it has taken me six years to read this book. Although this gave me a good sense of the sheer length of the war, I wouldn’t recommend this method. Apart from the names of the main players on both sides and a rough sense of the course of the war, unfortunately I can’t remember most of what I have read.

The book is written in a clear, objective and factual style - at times too factual: the book lists at great length the number and model of ships, weapons and vehicles involved in battles. Occasionally, this neutral style gives way to emotive and opinionated sections, which seem completely out of place. Inexplicably, the book completely omits the liberation of Auschwitz on 27th January 1945.

2194 Days of War has been a reading experience like no other. I feel something of a relief that the war is finally over.

The Second World War was truly terrible. Over 50 million lost their lives in this conflict. This book exhaustively charted the main events, day by day, from 1939 to the final Japanese surrender on 2 September 1945.

The account was clear and factual, with just enough authorial perspective on the events to help readers appreciate their significance. Sometimes it was too factual: do we need a list of the exact number and type of ships used on a given day in a particular battle? I enjoyed the relief provided by contextual tidbits shown in textboxes, such as certain major films released during the war or the deaths of notable public figures not related to the war.

Unfortunately, this hefty tome published in the '70s misses out one or two events which are now considered historical milestones, such as the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

It has taken six years to read this (2,194 days to be precise), as we followed the passage of war in real time, 76 years to the day after each event. It has familiarised me with the major players on both sides in the war, but more than that it impressed upon me the sheer length of the struggle and the weight of the sacrifices made by people on all sides of the world.

A must for anyone researching World War II. Gives exact dates and descriptions of what went on. An excellent reference book.

While I actually read the entire book, it's more of a reference book, not a narrative read. As such, the writing is dry and direct with little elaboration or description.
It's not as complete as I thought it would be. Some small items and events were not covered at all such as when certain islands or cities were first occupied. However, it's understandable because a book that complete would result in at least dozens of additional pages with little result.
Some surnames and ships are misspelled and a few photo captions are wrong. There are a few minor factual errors.
Nonetheless, I picked up quite of bit of ideas and facts, in particular seeing what events were going on around the world around the same time. The events in one arena did not occur in a vacuum; events were going on everywhere else. That's the strength of this title. There is some coverage of hard to find events in Italy after D-Day as well as China, southern Philippines and Burma. The book is a keeper as a reference book.

A must have for anyone serious about WW2 history. This book chronicles the significant day to day events from the diplomatic letters leading up to the outbreak of war to the final days of the conflict. Nothing comes close. This book is an invaluable WW2 reference book.

A good companion to other historical works. It might be confusing to take it on without some prior experience with World War 2 history.
