It's nice to read a parenting book that focuses on enjoying your child (while helping them develop). Lots of practical, many instinctual simple ways to interact with infants.
Flipped through it. Pretty basic games and how to interact with babies and toddlers, but a good guide for anxious or those who don’t know any other children.
My daycare provider recommended this book when I first brought my son to stay with her when I returned to work. During those early months where he mostly just ate, slept, and looked around, it was hard to know what to do with him, and Silberg offers some simple ways to introduce your baby to sounds and actions that he or she will be learning over the coming months and years.
The activities are divided into 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, and 9-12 month sections, and now that my son is approaching his first birthday it's fun to see how the games we play are becoming increasingly interactive.
Especially in the early chapters, her suggestions for games and activities may seem simplistic and repetitive, but sometimes your brain needs that basic kickstart. Good lists of activities with a passing mention of brain research into infant development, but nothing I'd go out of my way for.
I was looking for more activities to do with Max when he is happy and alert during the day, and the 0-3 month section of this book gives about 30 ideas. I have to say, most are pretty unimpressive, as they are things we've already done a million times (what parent doesn't sing songs or talk to or make faces at a baby?! I really don't think these should be counted as separate "brain games" by the author), but there were a couple of cute "games" that involve physical activities that I've been trying to some degree of success. I'll have to get it from the library again when we get to the 3-6 month stage. The later sections for older babies seem to have more creative ideas, rather than things you'd already come up with yourself.
I only read the first section of this book as my L.O. is only 3 months but I have to agree with another reviewer that most of this is common sense or stuff you would probably already be doing with your baby. There are a few interesting tidbits in there and it is quick and easy to read but not something that I would rush out to the book store and buy.
Don't know if this book is better than any others out there but I found it interesting. A lot of the things to do were kind of no-brainers but each activity told what part of your babies brain it stimulated which I thought was kind of neat.
I already knew a lot of what's in here, but I would advice parents to read it anyway. These first couple of years are so important in brain development and TV isn't gonig to give us a generation of brilliant thinkers!
Most of the games I already knew or did int he past with other kids, however it's great that it lists them in the age groups. It is very important to play age appropriate games otherwise babies get frustrated. I liked also that it mentioned what part of development it influenced.
What Brain Research Says: Researchers now confirm that how you interact with your baby and the experiences you provide have an impact on his emotional development and learning abilities.
