Why is there only one necromancer in a city that should have hundreds?
After freeing a cult from the evil that tormented its members, necromancer Kezia Bernard is thrilled to receive an offer to study under world-famous Evangeline Morris. Not only is Evangeline the last necromancer in Atlanta, she also has what Kezia wants most: a cure for the affliction that can kill those who remain too long in a necromancer's presence.
Or so Kezia thought.
A mysterious scourge has revived Evangeline's affliction, killing a member of her household and putting the rest in imminent danger. Fearing the darkness that robbed the city of its necromancers is closing in on its final victim, Kezia must act fast to save her mentor from an unthinkable fate. Little does she know the spider that holds Atlanta in its web is far more insidious than she could possibly imagine.
Can Kezia root out the blight before it destroys her mentor? Or will she discover nothing can stop the necromancer's curse—not even her?
I love these books SO much. --- "Dreaming Down the Bones" by Amber Fisher is the second installment in the urban fantasy Rest in Power Necromancy Series.
Necromancer Kezia is elated when the renowned Evangeline invites her to come visit her in Atlanta. Kezia seeks a cure for the affliction that plagues those in her presence. Little does she know that a curse has emerged that endangers Evangeline's household and the very essence of necromancy in Atlanta.
Fisher's narrative brims with a rich tapestry of magical realism; entwining ancestral gifts, the black community's heritage of necromancy, and the complexities of a society marred by historical injustices. The magic system is varied with a blend of curses, osteomancy (bone magic), soul-stealing, and more. What's even better, they all intertwine seamlessly with medical and psychological science which is EXTREMELY my jam.
Kezia's journey involves a story ripe with the bonds of community and family. The varied cast, including both children and the elderly, contributes to the novel's portrayal of a diverse and interconnected community. Fisher has masterfully crafted a world where magic interweaves with daily life in a very satisfying way. You can tell that she's thought a lot about how magic would affect decisions.
Fisher's exploration of generational trauma and the power of unity leaves a lasting impression and brings a fresh perspective to the genre. I've never read anything like this series and I can't wait to continue.
I thoroughly love this story. I can't seem to get enough. This story is powerful and I hope it continues on in the future. Kezia is a very memorable character that I won't soon forget.
Dreaming down the bones is the second book in the Rest in power necromancy series by Amber Fisher.
After liberating the temple, Kezia takes it easy for a moment. When she gets a message from the world-famous Evangeline Morris, she decides to get back to work. Kezia has been invited to study with Evangeline in the hopes of overcoming the deadly affliction to her gift. However, it turns out that for a mysterious cause Evangeline her deadly afflication has returned. In the hope of answers, Kezia searches for the source behind this return.. Kezia will also investigate why Evangeline is the only necromancer in a big city like Atlanta. What dark secrets are hidden in Atlanta? Will Kezia find the source and get her answers? Will Kezia get rid of her deadly affliction?
Where in Temple of the Inner Flame other gifts besides necromancy come to the foreground, Dreaming down the bones emphasizes necromancy and other forms of magic such as wicca. In this book you will get to know more new characters, although characters like Marcus will move into the background more. Partly due to the introduction of the new characters, Kezia learns more about herself and her gift as a necromancer.
Amber Fisher has maintained a nice pace in Dreaming down the bones so that you always get enough information, but you are also really involved in the adventure. Where in Temple of the Inner Flame the end became clear through the puzzle pieces which were given during the story, the end of Dreaming down the bones came as a real surprise. In this part, Kezia explores the mysteries much more independently, making the story full of adventure.
Dreaming down the bones is a successful sequel to Temple of the Inner Flame and I personally liked this story even more as the first part. I am very curious which adventures Kezia will experience more and I am very curious about the next part Destiny of the Dead.
Kezia is in search of the way to cure her affliction and by doing so she'll be able to get her daughter and family back. Who better to learn from than Evangeline Morris, a fellow necromancer who cured her own affliction. But Kezia finds out that her visit to Evangeline is more than she thought or bargained for. Can she figure out how to help Evangeline before time runs out? This book follows Kezia to Atlanta on a journey to heal more than herself. She learns a lot about the other areas of magic that exist and a little more about herself. The love between the characters in this book shows how goodness can over shadow all else. I wish there had been some revisiting with Crystal to clarify if her actions caused any real harm. Overall a great read with a powerful emphasis on family and healing.
This author is new-to-me, and I am so very glad I found her! I haven't seen many Black heroines in my paranormal/urban fantasy, and I love the rich tapestry that was woven around Kezia, her ancestors, and her family. I love watching her find her community, and start to build a life that goes beyond her gifts. I'm looking forward to reading the final book, and exploring what else the author has on offer.
I grew up with the law of attraction and the power of three. This series is rooted in a different faith and culture, but very much the same message. Heal yourself and you will heal the world and vice versa. It it no coincidence that I am reading this series right now!
Continuing to love this series. Kezia is a stellar heroine who continues to be supported by good side characters. In this book, we got to know Evangeline and her family and had a new mystery to solve. Beyond the fun nature of this read, I love how Fisher explores racial identity and healing in this book.
This is an awesome series. Kezia is an outstanding necromancer. She has grown so much as a character in just two books. She has a great group of friends and family. A very enjoyable book.
I have been loving this series. This book includes a character that got on my nerves and I have a suspicion she’s in the next one. Looking forward to the last installment!
I’m starting to enjoy this series. Sometimes the main character comes across oblivious but she is kind hearted and is on her own journey while helping others.
The necromancy aspect here is very intriguing to me and it’s the main reason I liked this book, even if the story is interesting as well and I like the characters.
