I was fully prepared to give this a 4-5 star in the first 10-20%. This is a m/f romance and it is about the eldest princess who transmigrates to start her past life over again after her life ends tragically. This novel is somewhat similar to 泾渭情殇 Clear and Muddy Loss of Love in terms of the plot revolving heavily around politics, featuring a princess who becomes emperor, and a love interest who is the Princess Consort, etcetc.
What I liked: This author excels at writing the psyches of her characters. I haven't seen an author write so incisively and insightfully about people's behavior and motivations since priest. I thoroughly enjoyed the parts of the novel delving into any character's inner thoughts, feelings, and motivations. The characters' internal logic is very consistent, and I liked both protagonists very much. I found the chapters unpacking their unhealthy relationship behavior to be very rewarding as each character underwent genuine growth.
On to the bad lol. I stopped reading at about 40% and skipped to the end, and honestly don't feel like I missed that much. that's how draggy this book is.
1) while the characters were very consistent, the politics and the plot are just a mess lol. A lot of the plot developments don't make a lot of sense or contradict other previously established rules or the conventions of the time which another reviewer mentioned here. The politics also start to drag on after a while.
2) past chapter 40ish, the relationship was no longer slow-burn but just repetitive; it was just the same old relationship issues being dragged out for the sake of angst and melodrama, rinse and repeat for about 170 chapters.
For a rebirth story, the author turned the usual tropes on their head and it was very refreshing. Shoutout also to Shangguan Ya and Su Ronghua for their very interesting and thankfully no longer tragic romance. I also greatly appreciated that female characters were written thoughtfully and there were female friendships.

I have to give it a 5 stars, though probably it is not as perfect as I want it to be. It is 4.5 to 4.8 stars, but oh well, rounded up.
I decided to read this due to my overwhelming love and obsessions towards the drama adaptation, The Princess Royal, starred by Zhao Jinmai and Zhang Linghe. Started reading this in August 2024 and finally finishing it on the last day of February 2025, I took my time to read one or two chapters a day in the bus or train commute home from work, just so I could - first, devour the original craft to the fullest, and second, write up a lengthy review on my private Twitter account. I made a thread where I wrote down all the things I want to remember about the drama, the cut-out parts, the comparisons on scenes or interpretations between drama and book, and obviously the inner monologues of the main characters, Li Rong and Pei Wenxuan.
Not gonna lie, I gave up on consistent updates around chapter 90-ish because it slowed down my reading pace as it took me a lot of time to dissect coherently in the thread. Other than just having thoughts of my own, I had to properly constructed sentences due to the restricted amount of characters typed, minded my imperfect grammar, controlled the amount of tweets produced, managed the screenshots so they would fit at most 4 at a time in accordance to the content of my tweet, and at the same time, tried to keep up with the airing episodes of the drama on my local channel subtitled with my native language (I supposed it would help to refresh my memories on some scenes and their details whenever I needed to point out comparisons).
Not to forget the elephant in the room of the web novel, it is highly possibly google-translated, hence the uncountable amount of times I was lost in translations. On the poor side, it was not always easy to comprehend the story due to some words and grammar being confusing. For instance; (1) Li Rong being called a son, when she's obviously a daughter, (2) the constant mixed up of he/him and she/her when referring to specific characters. Sometimes, I needed multiple times of rereading the same lines. Sometimes, I needed to verbally reread loud enough for my ears to hear just so they could took part in the understanding process. Sometimes, the chapters went weird with repetitive paragraphs or symbols. Maybe these were the reasons I couldn't gave this book a solid 5 stars. The reading experience was not always pristine.
But fortunately, they never really hindered the amazing and deep journey I had with the fictional world in the plot and the beautiful writing style of the author. For knowing the story was google-translated, I found it astounding to read how most paragraphs describing the atmosphere and heartfelt inner thoughts were perfectly translated. They delivered the emotions flawlessly. My heart ached the same way, or probably more, that I cried. I was regularly in the state of desperately wanting to shove this book to the character so he or she could read and acknowledged wholly the latter's true heart. The author excellently conveyed happiness, sadness, longing, loneliness, aches, pain and many other human emotions in the best way possible, when it came to Li Rong and Pei Wenxuan's storyline (especially). Also to add, though not always a plus point, churning some brain chemicals to piece together the plot was an act I found surprisingly tolerable to go through. Around 70% mark of the web novel, I found another website that also translated the story in a more organized writing. But for some reason, I didn't feel like switching to the platform as I had already accustomed to my reading experience in novelhi.com. There were some attachments, I guess, about this poor translations that had captivated me in its palm.
Two other reasons resulting to the molecular point deduction were coming from (1) the palace politics and (2) the play-out of some intimate scenes and their reasons. Firstly, be it the drama or the book, I must say, I couldn't took in every thing. They were perplexing and complicated. I was either strayed in the layers of culture and historical appreciation, or the author's fictional intricacy of the world build-up.
Secondly, as a non-romance-romance reader, I admitted the lack of experience I had with this genre in terms of intimate scenes, hence I found them to take place rather unexpectedly at times. Some, I could appreciated. However some were not. I would like to emphasise one specific scene around the last few chunks of chapters when Li Rong concluded to reciprocate Pei Wenxuan's love in a form of sexual intercourse after realising how she had not been a good wife after all these times. Well honestly, more than this being the matter of concern for the book, it is generally a topic of discussion that I ponder on my own. Does it equivalent? is my question. Though I could understand its rationality, I may not grasp the entirety of its meaning.
My Photos app is filled with lots of screenshots of heart-warming and poignant paragraphs of scenes and descriptions. Pretty sure I have written somewhere about favourite chapters, but one I could recalled immediately now is chapter 170 where its content is coming from Pei Wenxuan's POV. The chapter was about every single thing that happened in the middle of what started by him receiving marriage proposal from the palace in his first lifetime and ended by him reuniting with Li Rong in the second lifetime. I appreciated the chapter immensely, my heart was tightening in pain. I had to take down my screen and took a moment to stare at the bus's window. I had to reflect on the agony I received. I wish we are given a chapter from Li Rong's POV too. I have to know. I need to know.
Last but not least, a comment on second chance romance. Never knew I could accept this trope, but I guessed it only works in a rebirth story. Saying this for the umpteenth time, Li Rong and Pei Wenxuan are meant to do it twice. They are fated to repeat the lifetimes because of the mistakes they made in the first to redeem the love they deserved. This time around will be the one that changes everything for the better.
A side note: the book has 171 chapters, with 169 of it equivalents to the 40 episodes of the drama, chapter 170 being Pei Wenxuan's POV, and chapter 171 being the same to the special episode of the drama.
To you, who read this book and wrote this review, this is you reminding your future self to continue (if you haven't completed it) and revisit the thread on Twitter to re-live the moment of love and dedication you had for the drama and book. You'll be in love again.
I'm not sure how the book and printing industry looks like for China. While I thought this is just a web novel, it surprised me at first to know it has a cover. And even more surprised when I saw a fan of the drama got to buy a physical copy of the book with a very beautiful illustrated cover on it. Third surprise comes when this book is listed in Goodreads. I'm still not sure of its hardcopy existence, but if there's really a one, I would really love to own one. Regardless the language, I want to have it as a trophy and evidence to commemorate my love for the whole premise of The Grand Princess/The Princess Royal

At first I loved this book to the point I tried to find and read the author's other work even if it meant MTL (most of the books were quite good), I thought I'd give this 5000/5 stars. Unique rebirth story, flawed and interesting characters, swoony male lead, awesome romance (loveeed the side characters' romance as well), the leads never feel too OP, political machinations, amazing side characters, female friendship, fleshed out and three dimensional villains. Overall a well-written and entertaining story with a satisfactory ending. What else could one ask for!? But it draaaags, and draaags. It isn't fillers, but repetitive scenarios. In the end I didn't even feel like reading the 2 extras. Ultimately 4/5, still an amazing book!

An excellent Roller Coaster of historical rebirth novel - Not for revenge, but for understanding the relationship.
What an amazing way of justifying the characterization even though few of them are felt morally flawed. We get attached to those characters, makes us think like them too (from their steps / POV). Being a fan of sharp tongued dialogues, it was really easy to get attracted towards these leads.
One and only issue was "Lead couple's back and forth movements of understanding the relationship even though both of them are well aware of the care from the other!!"
