Every Christmas, Christians all over the world observe Advent, a season that reminds us of the love, hope, joy, and peace found only in Jesus Christ. Through this short and sweet family devotional (especially helpful if you’re teaching little ones with short attention spans), Scott James brings to light the many promises of Christ―from birth to ascension―that demonstrate His love for us during this Christmas season.
These daily devotions, which can be used by both families and individuals, are timeless and moving reminders of the true gift of Christmas. The Expected One is a perfect (and doable!) gift for any growing family or beloved friend who needs meaningful and biblical reminders of all Jesus is for them during the busy and the bustle of the holiday season, setting Him back in the center of it all.
A simple and straightforward family Advent devotional focusing on the prophecies Jesus fulfilled in his coming. I liked how they were grouped into sections and including prophecies of his suffering. The readings were quick enough to keep everyone’s attention and to combine days if we got behind, but we often spent extended time talking because the readings and questions provoked great family conversation. Recommend!
Great advent book for families with young children or for high schoolers who have minimal time each evening during finals etc. Due to schedule we were able to read and discuss more than one a night as needed. I am the one who reads the book aloud.
We also didn’t finish until January due to unexpected issue that didn’t allow for daily reading. I’m glad we were able to read and didn’t confine ourselves to the dates. It still allowed us to put Jesus at the center during the Christmas season even if we didn’t spend the same amount of time like when my son was younger.
We also do other activities. He reads aloud a part of the birth story of Jesus on an ornament each day and then hangs on a small tree. It is The Story of Christmas Story Book Set and Advent Calendar. I also purchase a secular advent calendar each year and he gets to open something each day. Most years it has been a Lego advent calendar, but this year I picked the Jurassic Park advent calendar since we both like dinosaurs.
This was our family advent read and I appreciated how short each day’s reading was and the questions that followed. They were mostly above my kids’ heads but that meant the kids started asking us questions and we had a few sweet conversations. This book follows the different promises in the Old Testament: the promise of his coming, birth, life, death, resurrection, reign, etc. because of that and the brevity of it, it’s not a walk through the redemption story the way The Jesse Tree is, but it suited the time we had this year. I’ll happily pull it out again in a few years to see what fresh understanding the kids (and we!) have.
