“Full of drama among the beautiful and powerful, the series would make a fabulous soap opera.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer

It’s been three years since Ashiya Waters walked away from Russell—and made the biggest mistake of her life. She knows she shouldn’t dwell on the past. Love isn't meant to last…and nobody taught her that better than her own family. But when her grandmother unexpectedly dies, leaving Ashiya in charge of a multimillion-dollar company, Russell is the only one who can help her…and things get complicated fast.

Russell Gilchrist would do anything to be named COO of Robidoux Holdings—with all of the power and money that comes along with it. He’s been desperate to solve the disappearance of his brother, Roderick, for years, and the Robidoux influence could finally turn this cold case hot—and give his family some much-needed closure. The job is his…if he helps Ashiya manage her new business. He’ll just do his work and get out—that’s the plan. But being so close to the woman who broke his heart is dangerous. Seeing her smile and feeling her touch makes him want to forget the past. But will this second chance at love burn them both?

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

She'd toyed with him. Used him to make her ex jealous, and by the time she realized she was falling for Russell, it was too late.

Fourth in the Jackson Falls series, Foolish Hearts is a book that you could jump into the series with, like I did, but the beginning will have you realizing that you're missing out on some family and friend relationship background. I never felt lost but there was some missing context with relationships and the foundation for the town of Jackson Falls, the Robidoux family, and their big corporation. Ashiya's mother is a Robidoux but Ashiya never wanted to be a part of their competitive and cutthroat world working in the company, she instead started her own consignment clothing business, Piece Together, and while she is friends with her all her cousins, does her own thing.
Russell at one time was secretly dating Ashiya and fell for her hard but heartbreakingly learned that Ashiya was only using him to make her ex jealous and get him to take her back. He's managed to mainly avoid her for the last three years since their break-up but as he's working towards being CEO of Robidoux Holdings it's getting harder.

Her voice was one of the things that had gotten him from the start. Soft, and teasing. Like the caress of cotton or silk across his skin whenever she laughed or spoke his name.

The first half of the book will have most of your sympathies with Russell, as he was treated fairly bad by Ashiya, using him to make her ex jealous and then trying to emotionally manipulate him to spend time with her as she is trying to get him back. The second half will have you soften towards Ashiya as more of her childhood is revealed and we learn how she internalized her parents' rocky relationship. Ashiya's mother married her father for the large corporation his mother owned and when she gets called a gold digger for it and her husband gets disowned and shunned from the family, she pushes Ashiya's father away. The two never get divorced because Ashiya's father didn't want her to grow-up without a father but the distance, emotional manipulation, and coldness is felt by Ashiya growing up. This sets the stage for how Ashiya acts in her relationships and why she handled it the way she did the first time she started dating Russell and then to the present when she is trying to get him back. I can see some feeling less charitable towards her character but the second half gives the material to draw more empathy for her. Russell's character was the combination of sweet and strong that will have readers firmly in his corner and swooning.

He'd only wanted to find someone he could love and trust.

What draws these characters together for their second chance romance is Ashiya's grandmother on her father's side dying and listing Ashiya in her will as sole beneficiary and leaving Ashiya as chairperson and majority holder in her company. It's at first something Ashiya doesn't want, she's worked to escape that world from her mother's side but when she shows up to reject the will readings, her cousin Levi, who has been mostly running the company, gets in her face about being a gold digger like her mother. Ashiya decides to show him and everyone she can run a company. Ashiya goes to her cousin who runs Robidoux Holdings, asking for some help and guidance but her cousin directs Russell to help Ashiya. Russell is told it's because the cousin is considering him for CEO and needs to know she can trust him and as Russell really wants the CEO job, because of the money and power that will come with it, he agrees to go to Hilton Head to help Ashiya. This also helps and brings in the side story going involving the disappearance of Russell's brother fifteen years ago when he went to Hilton Head for spring break. A new detective is on the cold case and Russell wants to personally talk to him and maybe do a little investigation himself, why he wants the CEO position so bad, he will be in a power position to make people pay attention to his brother's case.

He'd begged her to stay and she'd still walked away. She'd been such a fool.

As you can tell, there are some major threads going on, the second chance romance, Ashiya's immediate and outer family drama, Ashiya inheriting a company, and Russell still trying to find out what happened to his brother years ago. Towards the latter second half there was also some embezzlement mystery from Ashiya's new company that tied in but, yeah, there was a good amount going on. I thought it all held together but I did think Ashiya and Russell's building relationship took a hit because of everything else going on. There were a few flashbacks to show us these two in love but I missed more of the emotion building blocks, I want to know and see the hows and whys of the falling in love, it's about going on the journey with them for me; second chance can sometimes give us less of the journey because of the nature of the trope. I thought this second time around I got a lot of lusting from Ashiya and a lot of wariness from Russell until the latter second half where I thought we got better looks at their friendship and emotional connection.

Ashiya suppressed a smile and the spark of hope glowing hotter in her chest. He still felt something. He might not want to, but he did.

Russell stole the show for me a little bit because of how sweet he was and how his vulnerability showed through him not wanting to open his heart up again to Ashiya, I felt his broken heart. I would be remiss if I didn't mention how steamy this couple was, too. I feel I talk enough about too many sex scenes but this story had a good amount in the second half and because they fit the couple, they fit the story and actually enhanced this couple for me. Look, when they got interrupted the first time I wanted to reach into the pages and shove the barging character out the door and the kitchen table scene was definitely not a waste.

His hand pushed the hair back from her face. He rested his forehead on hers and locked eyes with her.

I would have liked to have seen more of this couple's beginning falling in love, maybe one of the story threads taken out, and more time given to Russell's brother's cold case, especially because of how much of an emotional punch it gives at the end. Ashiya and Russell did deliver on the steamy and ended up giving me one of the most grown-up, mature relationship talks that gave their coming together an even more satisfying feel. I'll be going back to check out the beginning of the series and will be on the lookout to see if Ashiya's cousin Levi gets a wake up call to pay more attention to Ashiya's late grandmother's assistant Brianna.

This series has truly become one of my favorites. I love how both leading characters are well developed and how we get to see their families in the mix. As crazy as the Robidoux family can be it's nice to see their relationships with each other. In this story we step outside of the siblings to their cousins Ashiya who has made brief appearances in other books.

Ashiya likes to keep herself out of the family business and drama. So she's not happy to discover she's inherited The Legacy Group from her late grandmother. Unlike her cousin Elaina she's not interested in corporations and is rather happy with her thrift store business. But she's not one to turn down a challenge so when her cousin Levi says she's unfit to run the company she needs to prove him wrong. Plus she is interested in getting to know her father's side of the family.

Russell is determined to move up the corporate ladder and he's now one step closer to becoming CEO. He believes the CEO title will give him the power he needs to get answers in the case of the disappearance of his older brother. He agrees to help Ashiya as a consultant while she gets settled into her new role. He and Ashiya used to date a few years ago and she ended breaking his heart by going back to her ex boyfriend.

Working together and staying at the same house brings up old feelings that neither can deny. But will their second chance at love work this time?

Fast paced, plenty of drama and conflict, and some steamy sex scenes Foolish Hearts isn't one to miss.

I received an arc from Harlequin in exchange for an honest review.

Ashiya Waters is the niece of Grant Robidoux and when he estranged paternal grandmother dies and leaves Ashiya the head of a multi-million dollar empire she will need help navigating her way through the corporate world....He cousin Elaina Robidoux send her top Executive Russell Gilchrist to assist Ashiya....The catch is Russell and Ashiya use to date and she dumped him 3 years ago to go back to her no good ex. This was a really good slow developing story and a second chance at romance in addition to Russell assisting Ashiya learn about and understand her new position as the chairperson of the board. I enjoyed this story as well as the narration. Excited to see what's next for the Robidoux Family.

This entire series is fantastic! Foolish Hearts follows Robideaux cousin Ashaye reconnecting with Russell after she broke his heart and went back to her ex. I will say, there is a LOT happening in this book and my only complaint is there might be a tad to much in terms of plot threads.

- Ashaye unexpectedly inherits everything from her estranged grandmother and must figure out how to run a Fortune 500 company with the cousin who expected to inherit instead.
- Ashaye is also dealing with complicated family relationships and childhood trauma.
- Russell wants to become CEO of Robideaux holdings and must prove himself by helping Ashaye with that transition.
- At the new company somebody has been embezzling money. Ashaye and Russell must investigate who and why.
- And if that wasn't enough, there's also a missing persons case! This was interesting too because it gets into how typically fewer resources are directed at missing people when they're Black and just how much power and money it can take to get any answers.

So yeah, there's a ton thrown in here which some readers might not enjoy. That said, I had a good time with the twists and turns, the family drama, and the steamy second chance romance. Give it a try! I received an advance copy of this book for review via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I just love this soapy series so much.

Review at Smexy: https://smexybooks.com/2021/08/review...

Foolish Hearts is the 4th in the Jackson Falls series, it’s loosely tied to the previous books but it can stand alone without any issues. I’ve loved this series because it’s just been incredibly soapy with messy characters and complex family drama. I love that Synithia Williams has allowed her characters to be dramatic or troubled or overly angry because those kinds of characters feel more realistic to me. I don’t love perfect characters because I can’t understand them at all.

Ashiya is the cousin of the Robidoux family that had been featured in the first 3 books. She inherits a multimillion-dollar company when her grandmother dies and is in a bit over her head as she’d only run a small thrift store before. Her ex, Russell, is sent to help her out, and while Ashiya is delighted at this, he is…not. They had not ended things on great terms as Ashiya went back to her ex.

The chemistry these two have is off the charts. Russell tries to resist as he’s not interested in rekindling things, and one of the things I love about Williams’ writing is that she develops both characters so well. Because we get to see and understand both of their reasonings about the relationship so completely. He was extremely hurt before when Ashiya went back to her ex and does not want to repeat that experience. And Ashiya regrets what had happened before, that we get to understand those regrets and behavior is really a testament to the writing.

The soapy aspect to this book is that there is also family and corporate drama playing out with Ashiya’s extended family as she tries to understand those dynamics. We get corporate drama with some embezzlement. And to top it off there’s a complicated mystery in Russell’s past that he’s trying to solve about the disappearance of his brother from 15 years before.

All of these different threads come together and are woven throughout the book. It’s fast-paced and steamy, exactly the type of book I want. This whole series is just not one to miss.

Content Notes: death off-page, kidnapping

This is book 4 in Synithia Williams’ Jackson Falls series. There are storylines that run throughout the series, so I recommend experiencing them all and in order – starting with the novella, The Promise of a Kiss.

Ashiya & Russell have both been background characters since book 1. Ashiya is a cousin to the main family and has been happily outside the drama of Robidoux Holdings. Russell has been working his way up the company while avoiding Ashiya after she hurt him when their relationship ended.

Williams’ gives these two an epic second chance romance as well as making both their dreams come true, even if not in the way they expected. Theres some compelling side stories going on here: the mysterious disappearance of Russell’s brother, embezzlement, and Ashiya’s parents self-centeredness.

I loved the way it all unfolded as well as the pacing of the story. This continues to be a fun and dramatic series on top of steamy romance.

Narration:
I continue to adore Adenrele Ojo’s performances. She does a great job with all the characters, the southern accents, and the various emotions. It’s a treat to listen to her.

Ok throughout much of the first half of this book, I was really cranky with Ashiya. She was so manipulative, even when trying to win back the love of her life! You can’t win a forever love by being manipulative! But through the course of book, we see her open and grow and learn how to be there for the people she loves, and how to stand up for herself, and how to trust herself. And I loved that!! I also loved Russell who was heartbroken after his first relationship with Ashiya went south. Now he’s doing his best to hold her at arms length while helping her find her place in this new company. He’s such a gooey a cinnamon roll. But he’s also searching desperately for information about his brothers disappearance. It’s been so many years, both from losing his brother and losing Ashiya, is it too late to find the answers?

Ashiya and Russell have the kind of second-chance romance you root for right from the beginning. I had all the feels throughout this book. The story and side stories were interesting, and I really need the Waters cousins to get stories, especially Levi (with the right person)! Just LOVED it!

Overall, I’ve really enjoyed this over-the-top, soapy series but I will say I had a few quibbles about this book in particular, especially because the couple in this one had been teased since book 1. This is a second chance romance between Ashiya and Russell - they had dated while Ashiya was on a break from her boyfriend and when he came crawling back, she walked away from Russell and her growing feelings for him to go back to what was familiar.

I have to say, I wasn’t crazy about the mind games and emotional manipulation that Ashiya pulled at the beginning of the book to try and hook Russell and convince him to give them a second chance. I am normally the kind of reader who immediately connects to the FMC and the MMC has to work to win me over. But this is that rare book where I was #TeamRussell almost from the start. It took a while for Ashiya to regain his trust and likewise, it took a while for her to gain mine as well.

All that aside, I liked the family intrigue, the corporate intrigue, and also there was a heartbreaking side plot about Russell’s missing brother. I liked the romance once Ashiya stopped with the emotional games and finally decided to be open and honest and vulnerable about her feelings. And I had assumed (and perhaps I’m correct in that assumption) that this is the final book in this series but this book also introduced us to several characters and I would not mind seeing books featuring them.

The chemistry and sex between the 2 MCs was hot and steamy, I loved the side characters and overall, this series has been a delight to read.

I loved this heartwarming second-chance romance!

Ashiya is the "rebel" Robidoux, the one who is trying to make her own way in the world without the influence of her powerful family. I loved her indomitable spirit, her down-to-earth values, and her delightful sense of humor. Discovering the legacy left to her by the grandmother who she thought had disowned her gave her a host of new challenges but didn't change who she was in her heart.

Russell has never gotten over Ashiya, so he treads very carefully when he finds himself in her orbit again. But this time is different in every way that matters, paving the way for the romance they should have had from the start.

I loved the intricate family dynamics at play here with both sets of families. Ashiya's maturity and confidence in light of her parents' issues was refreshing to see. Russell is intuitive and devoted, everything that Ashiya needs in a partner. Together these two conquer all the emotional hurdles in their path, leading to a beautiful, satisfying HEA.

I really enjoy this author's writing style and intensely personal characterizations. These are people that feel so real, you forget you're reading fiction. Each visit to Jackson Falls is a delightful treat, and I highly recommend both this book and the entire series. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed the fourth installment of the Jackson Falls series and I so hope there is more to come. I was immediately all the way in-
What is UP with Ashiyas cousin, Levi?
What happened to Russell's brother?
Will Ashiya have to give up her new role in the company?
The intrigue! The interpersonal relationships! The romance!
IT BANGS, as they say.
This series has been such an enjoyable one because it's more than romance. I find I need an external plot and I need more than vibes and relations to keep the pages turning. Ashiya's relationship with her parents, her new role in the company she's inherited, her past relationship with Russell- and HIS search for his missing brother plus the feelings for Ashiya that he's been nursing for years make this an incredibly well-rounded novel that hinges on great writing and not steamy scenes.
Absolutely enjoyable installment in this series.

Foolish Hearts picks up 3 years after Ashiya Robidoux Waters breaks Russell Gilchrist’s heart. For Ashiya, she’s spent the past 3 years regretting her decision to choose a person that she was familiar with, rather than accepting the love that Russell had to give. However, Russell has spent the last 3 years trying to get over Ashiya, pretending that she doesn’t exist, and focusing on his career. After Russell is tasked with helping Ashiya manage her new company, the two have no choice but to put their differences aside, and work together in order to succeed individually. Making the most of their close proximity, Ashiya sets out to prove to Russell that she is not the same person he knew 3 years ago.

I genuinely felt bad for Russell and how Ashiya ended things with him. However, at that point in her life, Ashiya wasn’t ready for Russell’s love, so it was for the best. I appreciated that he didn’t make it easy for her to win him back, but the fact that Russell thought he could be close to Ashiya, and not get caught up again…bless his heart.

I love me a romance with a little drama on the side, and of course, this book was packed with that Robidoux family drama that we’re used to with the Jackson Falls series.

Ashiya Waters has made an appearance in the previous stories featuring her Robidoux cousins. Her story is just as complicated, emotional, and passionate as expected from this entertaining series.

The author has penned a story that is well developed with strong nuanced characters that resonate with authenticity. Ashiya loves her family, however she has no desire to become embroiled in their business machinations, instead following her own path. An unexpected and startling revelation will send her in yet another direction.

Russell has worked hard, driven by a need to solve a heartbreaking mystery that has forever changed him. Hope for a potential promotion brings him closer to that goal. A promotion that could be contingent on assisting the woman who broke his heart.

I really liked this second chance story. This book has it all strong emotions, recriminations, forgiveness. growth, discovery, family and an intense passionate romance. I enjoyed every moment of this story.

THIS is how you do second chance romance. Now, there was a lot (and I do mean A LOT) of stuff going on here - pretty much business as usual for this series. I really liked both mysteries and how they resolved.

I'm so glad that there was more in this series! I've fallen in love with Jackson Falls, and the crew there! This one didn't disappoint.
Inheriting a company as well as a second chance romance. I found this couple refreshing. Though I love the siblings, it's nice to take a step away.
Can't wait to see what comes next!

This series, Jackson Falls, has thus far concentrated on the immediate Grant Robidoux family. This installment focuses on Grant’s niece, Ashiya. While she is part of the other books, this books gives us a great view of what it means to be even on the periphery of this family. What you also get in this book is the full story about Russell. We learn what motivates him and sets him back. What was a draw back in this book was there were so many subplots that at least one was left hanging.

M/F Second chance romance
Triggers: Murder
I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

Ashiya never wanted much to do with her family's wealth and lifestyle. She loves her shop and how successful she's made it. But, when her long lost grandma leaves everything to her, Ashiya doesn't really know what to do.

Russell vowed to never let someone into this life again after Ashiya used him. He didn't ever want to feel like that again. But, when he sees her struggling to figure out where to go when she's handed a company, Russell knows that his heart is more able to forgive than he thought.

As Ashiya navigates a new family's hidden secrets and agendas, Russell visits old wounds that have been left to fester. Together they will tackle each other's problems in the hopes that at the end, they'll have found exactly what they were looking for.

It's a good second chance story with a lot of moving parts. Stealing, cheating, lying all come fairly standard in this new company and in the mystery behind Russell's family's mystery. I enjoyed watching them fight for what they wanted and loved watching them find each other again.

When I read the third book in this series I thought it was the last and was so surprised when I saw there was a fourth. Ashiya is a character we meet in the first book, but honestly we don't see a whole lot of her throughout the previous books which is why I was confused when I saw there was a fourth book and that it was about her. One of the things I love most about these books are how soapy they are. I would say that of all of the books this is 100% the most soapy especially with the many side plots (Ashiya's claustrophobia, looking for Russell's brother, the relationship's between the MC's, their familiar relationships, work stuff). I enjoyed both Russell and Ashiya as MC's and their relationship. I really enjoyed seeing the characters from the other books, and if this is the last book in the series than I think that it was tied up well. I will definitely look for more books by this author in the future. And I'll keep an eye out in case someone finally decides to made this a show/movie.

Wow! Reminds me of the recent unexplained deaths of Black people who party with White people!

To think that those people covered up the death of Russell's brother for fifteen years shows that that other culture will do anything to keep from taking responsibility for their actions. Then to add insult to injury that heifer thought it was okay to steal from the company of her employ simply because her grandmother's company could not compete with Ashiya's grandmother's company. This is so art imitating life to me! Look at how that other group who stole our culture either tries to take anything that is ours or destroy it and us. I know this is fiction but I so want all of them to spend the rest of their lives incarcerated and the money stolen be made to be returned to the company. I pray there is someone available to care for Melissa's child while she is behind bars! Sad and great story and I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this story!!!!!

I was really looking forward to this book as it would close out the series. However, within the first few pages I knew that it was going to be a struggle to finish. There were a lot of issues with the editing including but, not limited to the names of characters from previous books being given incorrectly or misspelled, words missing, words added that made the sentence not make sense anymore as well as a lot of grammatical errors. I did finish the book and would have given it a higher rating if the above issues weren't there. This was a new author for me and I thoroughly enjoyed the three previous books and I was hoping that the same would have been true for this book.

Foolish Hearts is the fourth installment in Williams' brilliant and soapy series that I've been enjoying immensely. This time it features a couple teased since the first book in the series, the second chance romance between Ashiya and Russell. Essentially, the book follows Ashiya learning that she's inherited a Fortune 500 company from the grandmother she hasn't spoken to since she was 9 or 10. Ashiya is utterly baffled by her grandmother's choice and she doesn't really want to take on this responsibility. Ashiya learned from the Robidoux family that power means games and manipulation and it's always been something she's wanted to steer away from. However, she finds herself giving in and taking on the challenge, which means she gets to meet this other side of her family and that she needs help learning how to run this company. Elena sort of manipulates Russell into helping Ashiya and Ashiya sets out to convince Russell that he needs to give her a second chance. There's also two crimes that are being investigated throughout this book and that added a fun element, even if I knew exactly who had done it from the beginning.

Ultimately, I enjoyed this book for the same reasons I've enjoyed the other books in this series. It's soapy and fun and I like the complex family dynamics and character dynamics. I also enjoyed the added suspense element here and really liked getting to know the new family members of Ashiya's. However, this book presented me with probably my least believed HEA of all of the books in this series so far because of the way Ashiya's manipulation at the beginning of the novel worked and continued to be used throughout the book until the end. I understood why it was happening, I just needed her to like... see her go to therapy to work on this issue because it seems pretty clear that she learned bad habits from her parents. That said, I really loved Russell's family and Russell in general was a good love interest. I would definitely still recommend this book to anyone interested in it!

Thanks to Netgalley and HQN for the review copy, although I technically read the finished copy as an audiobook from my library.

This is the 4th book, but can be read as a standalone. Ashiya and Russell were more background characters in the previous books, so a reader would not miss much by starting with this book. IMHO, books 3 & 4 were better. I struggled with 1 & 2, but that may have just been me.

I thought this was so much more than just Ashiya and Russell's love story. There was trauma to contend with, both familial and relationship. There was pain, loss, and fear. There were a multitude of secrets, and attempts to break through generational dysfunction.

I was surprised at the mystery, suspense, and danger. I was happy with the possibility of continued stories about Ashiya's family on her father's side.

Russell and Ashiya had to learn how to be open and honest in their communication as well as take a leap of faith with their trust issues. I appreciated the fact that their relationship was not presented as an "I'm sorry, now everything is ok" type of situation.

I also liked the way Ashiya made an effort to get to know her father's family and give them the benefit of the doubt. Considering the circumstances, it took some bravery and a certain level of maturity. In spite of how Ashiya behaved in the past, specifically in regard to Russell, at least she learned from her mistakes.

I listened to that audiobook. I thought the narration was great. I think the narration not only improved from book 1, but with each subsequent book. The narrator has become one of my favorites, so maybe I am biased, lol.

I would definitely recommend the book whether it is the audio, ebook, or whatever form you choose.

Two people with deep seated issues come together again. Ashira’s parents messed her up. Especially her selfish, money hungry mother. Ashira missed out on knowing her paternal grandmother because of her mother and her pride. Russell losing his brother and the unsolved mystery of what happened in addition to being treated shabbily by Ashira because she didn’t know how to love right really had his head messed up. His cousin and his trash advice didn’t make it any better. Russell’s cousin got on my last nerve and when he came at Ashira calling her names even after Russell told him to stay out of his business I wanted him to be exiled and was glad when Russell took up for Ashira. One thing I do not like about this author’s books is that the endings never provide real closure. They are kind of abrupt. Did Russell take the job as CEO or is he staying with Ashira in Hilton Head? If he does take the job how will they build a relationship. What will happen to Melissa’s son with his parents and grandparents being prosecuted? Is Levi’s relationship with the woman he’s in love with going to be explored more? Please get Russell’s cousin a love interest so he can have his own business and not worry about Russell’s. So many questions left unanswered.

Ashiya & Russell. Have history, Ashiya regrets walking away from Russell. Russell wants nothing to do with her. Ashiya’s grandmother passed away and leaves her the multimillion dollar company. Russell wants to be CEO of Robidoux Holdings and will do anything for it, included helping Ashiya get acclimated in her new role.

This story is full of drama. The good kind. And Ashiya has to manage to all and the only thing she is sure about is how she feels about Russell. They leave Jackson Falls for a while and go to Hilton Head where her family’s home and company is located. Russell also needs to find out what happened to his missing brother while he is there. There is also some missing funds in the company that Ashiya discovers. Can they solve all of their problem while reigniting this flan they have for each other?

The is a must read is you like drama on all sides. This is fast moving but the story resolves itself at every plot so you are not left hanging.

Gripping, well-written romance with a strong female lead and an intriguing hero who’s still nurturing a broken heart. Russell is understandably closed-off at first, but even with everything that happened between them, he still comes to Ashiya’s aid. I really liked him. The worldbuilding is wonderful and I really enjoyed the insightful character development of both main characters, though especially Ashiya’s. I didn’t expect the painful secret in her past, nor the nightmarish plot twist near the end, which she handled so bravely. Russell has known terrible loss and is desperately seeking closure. My heart ached for him and his parents as that part of the story unfolded. The secondary characters have amazing added value, both the new ones and those we already knew from the previous books in the series. Second chance at love romances are often hit or miss for me, and I wasn’t completely sold on their background story, but I really loved seeing Ashiya and Russell reconnect and grow.

I love a second chance story. This is love story with a couple of mysteries thrown in.

Ashiya is a member of the Robidoux family and they like to play games. She dated Russell as a way to make her ex-boyfriend jealous and f**ked around and fell all the way in love with Russell. He didn’t realize he was being used and when he found out was devastated and basically stayed clear of her.

Fast forward a few years and she needs his help when she inherits her paternal grandmother multi-million dollar empire. He’s doing it to become CEO at Robidoux holdings and to be able to find out what happened to his brother, Roderick who disappeared 15 years before on spring break. Coincidentally Ashiya’s new business location and where his brother disappeared is the same place, Hilton Head. They eventually work together to find out what happened to his brother, who is embezzling funds in her new company and eventually fall in love all over again.

This time around they were more honest and upfront. Their HEA was well deserved. 🥰

3.5-4 stars
This was an all-around good read. I started this while packing to move house and it kept me on task + wanting to know what happened in the story. So this Ashiya's book in the Jackson Falls series. I've had such a good time with these characters! And I can't sit here and act like I wasn't happy to have a break from wanting to put these paws on Grant Robidoux, the patriarch of the Robidoux Family. Though, I am interested to read his story to see if Williams can somehow miraculously endear him to me. ANYWAY!!! Russell and Ashiya have great chemistry and I bought their story from the very beginning. I also found the ending to be satisfying and fitting. I definitely recommend this series to Black Love lovers!

Surprising

I really enjoyed the other book(s) I read from this series so I was rather surprised that I just wasn't feeling this as much as I expected. I didn't care for Ashiya and I wished Russell had more resistance towards her. I found her a little manipulative; when she badgered and threatened him about his whereabouts after she guilted him into staying in her grandmother's house with her as if she had ANY right to that information, that took me out. Especially when he caved and told her. That the-woman-always-gets-her-way stuff in books will make me lose interest quickly and unfortunately, that happened here.

I still plan on reading the other books in this series I haven't read yet, though. Still a big fan of the author; this book just wasn't for me.

WIlliams' Jackson Falls series is one of my favorites and this entry did not disappoint. Ashiya and Russell are a couple just want to route for. There was so much intrigue, like a true soapy story that Williams does well in this series. I normally dislike second chance romances. I feel like, IRL, parties would just move on and for good reason. But this one had me rooting for the characters.

I also listened to the audiobook and I have one gripe: the overly Southern accents. It is SC in the 2020s, not the 1950s. No one talks like that. Not overly Southern in this way and def not in SC.

BUt the book.. awesome!
