Susan Gee Heino began her writing career in the theatre. After several years of poverty and obscurity, her love of the English Regency time period led her to writing historical romance. In 2008 she won Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart Award (R) for Best Regency Historical and has become a national bestseller. Today she resides in rural Ohio with a menagerie of pets, her minister husband, and two frighteningly creative children. She loves to hear from readers!
Synopsis: Carly wants to buy the church where her, now deceased, father was previously the pastor. During the building inspection a body is discovered that is connected to Carly and her father. She has to team up with the officer on the case, TJ, to prove her father is innocent of any crime.
My rating: 3/5
I was immediately sucked into the plot of this book. I initially bought the book at an author event where the author did a reading about the book and from the beginning I was invested.
I really liked TJ pretty much from the start. Unfortunately, I never really got to like Carly. She is very devoted to the memory of her father and sure he couldn't possibly have done anything wrong. At times, I felt this went overboard especially when it made her consider hiding potential evidence against him from TJ.
I didn't see the chemistry between Carly and TJ. I was much less invested in their romance than I was the murder investigation. Also, Carly's jealousy rubbed me the wrong way.
I did guess elements of the answer to the mystery early on in the story but there were some surprises at the reveal as well.
Overall this book was fine. It was a fun mystery to read but, for me, a bit less exciting of a romance.

Can TJ trust Carlie to help find the truth - even if digging into the past uncovers secrets powerful enough to shatter her world? This book had a superlative plot with multiple miscues and false leads. There is much to be said about the bumps along the road for TJ and Carlie. Ultimately, the couple have an attraction. For my taste, the relationship was rushed and unexpected. I understand that the book is a little over 200 pages and there is a murder to solve but I wish there had been more exploration of the couple's draw to each other. There was potentially editable content of the murder to balance out the love story.
This was such a good story! The mystery at its core—centered around an unidentified John Doe at a church—kept me engaged from start to finish. The plot was well-crafted, with just the right balance of intrigue and suspense. I also appreciated the subtle touch of romance woven into the story, which added depth without overshadowing the mystery. The blend of these elements made for a thoroughly enjoyable read.
