Wonderful book which covers a lot of tales and legends. My favourite part was the section on temples and local deities of Malabar which was very helpful and interesting

Picked this up at a bookshop recently after seeing the cover art & skimming through a few chapters. Very drab rendition of what could’ve been a great set of stories individually. The author tries to cram in too much narrative into each chapter, making it unreadable after a few chapters (save for the nostalgia value). There’s no continuity, no sense of flow, very disappointed.

The theme chosen is appreciated as one can get to know, albeit briefly, a selection of legendary characters and historically interesting locations in the Malabar region. However, the fact that the author provides no references as to where she collected these information from is a big minus.

The standard of writing is quite bad and after a point becomes so boringly repetitive that the reader is put in a dilemma whether or not to finish the book. The choice of words used in many places (perhaps to show the author’s prowess on vocabulary) does not fit a book of this kind, I feel.
