That stereotype about the mid-life crisis involving smoking-hot flings with younger women? Yeah, turns out that might be true after all...
Brooke has resigned herself to being single forever. She's almost 40 and practically married to her career. When she decides to take some time off to renovate a run-down farmhouse in the middle of nowhere, everyone tells her she's having a midlife crisis. Maybe she is, but she still thinks that buying the farmhouse is the best thing she's done in years. Now if only she could get the roof to stop leaking...
Riley has always been a free spirit with nothing to her name besides the shirt on her back and a bag of tools. She's resourceful and knows what she's doing, but it turns out that it's still hard to make it as a woman in the trades. So when she hears about a major farmhouse renovation taking place, she jumps at the opportunity. She never would have imagined her new employer would be someone like Brooke, though... Sparks fly between Brooke and Riley as they’re thrown together. The intensity of their attraction is matched only by the barriers to their relationship.
Can two women who are polar opposites find a way to build a home together?
I always grew up hungry for stories that I could see myself in. Even the tiniest hint of queerness would make my heart beat faster, but any sort of media where queer women were the protagonists was a rarity. Even rarer if you wanted queer characters who got happy endings!
One day I decided to start writing the types of stories I wished I could read. Stories where being queer isn't something to overcome, where the main characters could fall in love and be themselves and find joy in each other. I'm mostly writing contemporary F/F romance these days, but occasionally I dabble in fantasy and sci-fi.
I love connecting with readers, so feel free to drop me a line any time you want to talk about books, dogs, or nerdy things :)
A sweet and steamy kindle unlimited romance. Only about 2 and half hours.
Brooke is nearing 40 and has been working hard as an attorney for over 15 years. Married to her job, she longs for something different, and on the way back from a meeting finds herself in a small country town and looking at an old farmhouse for sale, in need of renovation. She decides to take a 6 month sabbatical to fix it up. But unfortunately she hasn't a clue how to do that. Enter Riley. 27 and a construction worker like her dad was. She offers her services for a wage with room and board, and things quickly heat up between the two, as they work on the house together.
Both characters communicated well, which I appreciate a lot. They admit to their unexpected feelings, but neither can promise much past the months defined by the house project, so they agree to keep things casual. However fairly quickly they are clearly becoming more to each other than a fling. They are hot and steamy together sexually, and have an easy banter that was charming. Even a stray dog comes into the mix. Plus the local townsfolk are all rooting for the couple, too.
A good story that kept me engrossed from start to finish. Close to being a Brick wall ending, but it's Christmas so I'll over look it this time. Recommended.
Great age gap romance in a small town. Brooke and Riley are both scared to open themselves up to heartbreak. Brooke has been looking for something that's missing in her life so she buys a farmhouse to renovate. Riley is looking for a job to get her through the winter. The attraction is undeniable between them but no one wants to make the first move. Once they get passed their doubts the sparks fly. I laughed and cried during this story and I loved it.
I'm loving Kaya's books, can't stop reading them, not even to rate them, sorry This book is another win, I like the plot, and I like it that the MCs really talked (except for the final part, thanks Riley)
As a pet person, the dog was the ultimate detail to make me give 5 stars I have a super soft spot for rescued pets.
One more thing, I think Brooke is not very good in math, because she's all about being 15 years older than Riley, but she is 39 and Riley 27, soooo NOT 15 age-gap
Brooke is a lawyer who's been working more than living. On the way home from a trip for work she passes a for sale sign on an old, in need of repair home. She buys it, thinking she can tackle most of the work on her own. Riley is an out of work, barely has money younger woman who works construction jobs. Despite this being very trope, I enjoyed the story. I really could picture the old home and the repairs.
I loved this book. The age gap scenario was set up perfectly but what made this book so good were the characters. Brooke who purchased the old house and was in way over her head. Riley the “Jane” of all trades who does construction but is currently looking for work. Riley down to her last few bucks, over hears some folks in a diner talking about a house that was recently purchased in town but needs major renovations. Riley finds out from the local feed shop where the house is and goes to see if she can get hired to do some work. When she gets to the property, what comes out to find out who is on her land, is the most beautiful woman she has ever seen. Brooke takes in Riley’s looks and body and knows she is young but really needs some help. Taking her to look at the house and realizing they have the same ideas about the renovations, Brooke hires her and gives her room and board with her pay. As they work side by side and get to know each other, what develops is a respect and adoration and ultimately love. This along with the towns folk who become involved in their lives, brings a humility to the story. I really wish there was a few more chapters to at least see how Riley and Brooke continue and move forward down the line. Have not read anything from this writer, and this was so good that I need to check her out.
I enjoyed this book and for the most part it was enjoyable. I was hoping for a bit more of the witty dialogue and "good conversation" that kept being hinted at. I felt the romantic relationship was focused on the physical attraction and it seemed like it would of been nice to have more of the emotional developed.
Not good. Took me forever to finish because I couldn't get into it. I was interested in the plot, but it wasn't well-written. And oh my god, the author kept using "the blonde" "the older woman" "the younger woman" ... just stop.
I thoroughly enjoyed Brook and Riley in this entertaining story. Their characters were very enjoyable and the storyline was one of the best written one that I have read in a long time. Very little drama involved which made the story highly enjoyable. Even the sex scenes were not overwhelming. Overall this was a very enjoyable experience. I highly recommend this book for future reading.
I read this book with very few stops, late into the night. There are only a few characters in it so it is not a challenge to read and the two main characters are well developed. You will enjoy this read if you're looking for a romantic tale. I would have liked more about the secondary characters.
I've never fallen in love with a repair person or a contractor, the closest was the daughter of a contractor. What I liked about the book was the he slow burn and realisation that true love is rare and being scared is something you have to overcome, but that's true in real life as well.
It was okay, I think? Nothing exceptional, but nothing awful either. I will say though, the big angsty moment towards the end could have either been developed more and lasted for longer in-universe, or cut entirely in favour of the leads being happy together. Either of those would have improved the pacing of the story, I feel.
I was looking for a good f/f book; and I sure found it. I took while longer to read this, as per the weather Texas has been having the last few days. But, things are looking up. This is a great story. Thank you for your hard work.
This is a well done story. The author, Kaya LaSalle , does a very nice job with the dialogue. She presents a story about goals and directions in life. Sometimes you think you know where you're heading but life has a way of turning things all around. Well done!
I loved the characters in this book. There were many moments you can fall in love with both of the women. Rallying them to hopefully stay together. In the end it was a happy ending one could ever dream of.
This is a very well written tale about finding love. The characters are well developed, and the storyline flows from the pages. If you are looking for a feel-good tale of lesbian love with a happily ever after, this book belongs on your must-read list.
Interesting characters who cross paths at the right moment for both of them. Interesting background with the characters renovating an old farmhouse. Interesting story as an older city lawyer and a younger country drifter try to find some common ground.
A nice slow burn romance involving two totally different people. It’s funny the thing you want more than anything can be closer than you think. A must read.
I really enjoyed this book,From their first meeting it was obvious that Brooke and Riley were meant to be. This is my first book from Ms LaSalle and it won't be my last
Very good romance. I loved how Brooke & Riley basically merged into one. At the end, Riley had a miss-step, but she recovered. The armoire was a nice touch.
Nice gentle story, found that the younger woman being at last $100 at start of story a little unbelievable plus how they dealt with the payment system for the renovation while in a relationship wasn't addressed, but nice read.
