Meet she's 14, she's a misfit, she's kind of a genius and … she's in love. With Harry. There's just one Harry doesn't actually know that she exists. Because Harry is in the world's biggest boy band, True Connection. But to Edna, that's just a small obstacle. When True Connection announces a tour stop in Edna's city, she realises that this is her one chance to meet Harry and convince him of their destiny. But how will Edna get Harry's attention? How will she convince him that she's the one? And just how far is she prepared to go in the name of love? Edna takes her devotion to unforseen heights in this thrilling and hilarious musical comedy about first love, fan culture and the danger of underestimating teenage girls. Fangirls, by composer, lyricist and playwright Yve Blake, will surprise and shock you. If you think this is just a story about loving a boy band … think again. This is a story about how we ask young women to see themselves, and a celebration of their true, unlimited power.
I truly think this is such a brilliant musical and story like it’s so insane but I remember when I was 11 and I first heard the songs and I felt so seen and validated. Plus I love Harry styles and one direction so that’s amazing
I know this must be something ridiculous and glorious in performance. A mate handed it to me and insisted I give it a go as a lunchtime read. Told me it might be hard to get just reading the written, but it does come out even on the page.
It's got that dizzy Australian vibe in parts, that very homespun bombastic comedy voice. It's got a subject that typically lends itself to sexist ridicule and caricature. But it's also got something unique: it breaks out of its conventions. In Blake's hands, you end up with something political, critical, and careful. And you end up with an appreciation for the energy, interiority, plight, and potential of fangirls.
Fangirls is a musical that follows Edna, 14-year-old misfit scholarship kid who is in love with Harry. Edna's problem is that Harry is in the world's biggest boyband True Direction and doesn't even know she exists.
I saw this musical literally last night and immediately bought the script and pretty much read it immediately. Fangirls is a hilarious musical about the essence of being a fangirl, it pokes fun but never makes fun of teenage girls which refreshing to see. It draws attention to the double standard of fangirls being seen as hysterical for being enthusiastic about anything in comparison to how we view male sport fans as just passionate. The plot starts off as relatable before morphing into downright ridiculous into Act 2 in the best way possible. The tone of the writing is fervent and electric - it drove home the age of these characters for me. The characters are raw and realistic depictions of what being a teenager is like while celebrating their capabilities and ingenuity. I also love that this was written by an Australian playwright about Australian teenage girls.
I would recommend reading the script after watching the show or listening to the soundtrack while reading this script (unfortunately only one song is out now). The music is a huge part of how this story is told. If you live in Australia Fangirls is still on in Sydney until the 20th of Feb before it moves onto Adelaide/Wollongong/Canberra.
Love this musical, love to have a story that sympathises and deconstructs the reason behind fangirls, the importance of community based fandoms for young people, and educating about the dangers of parasocial relationships.
