LinkedIn is a fantastic tool for practically anybody in the world looking to advance their careers, network, market or sell a product or a service. With 740 million members and 55 million companies, LinkedIn has an enormous market share in its particular niche.
For a lot of people, myself included, navigating the social network can be overwhelming, with functionalities being added regularly, an ever-changing algorithm and filtering through what seems to be an endless news feed that flirts between professional and Facebook. How does one make sense of it all and use this powerful tool to advance one’s ambitions and goals?
In comes this book.
Sandra Long is a strong voice on LinkedIn, boasting 24000 followers and a career that has spanned multiple decades, she is currently the head of “Post Road Consulting: LinkedIn and Social Selling Training” and tours the US and Canada training people on how to use LinkedIn to grow their business opportunities. It seemed natural to buy her book in order to learn.
The book is divided into 22 chapters, each discussing a particular element of LinkedIn. They range from the simplest (Creating a profile), the most minute and sadly underrated details (changing the profile URL) to the most challenging (Creating content, Thought Leadership and Personal Branding).
At 240 pages, the 2021 edition isn’t a very long read but I found it to be very informative. It’s very well structured, well written and well researched. It doesn’t fall into the trap of dreary and monotonous writing that most factual and guide books fall into, its fresh, lively and easy to follow while still being to the point.
The content of the book isn’t solely based off armchair thinking and theorizing, it is the fruit of trial and error and multiple case studies that demonstrate the best practices to follow in order to utilize the network. While certain elements, thought leadership and personal branding, can’t obviously be provided in an easy to follow and one size fits all formula, the author does her best to provide enough knowledge and material for the reader to do their own thinking in a more methodical way about the image they want to project, which is all you can hope for in the case of such of a complex problem.
When it comes to complaints, I have very little or none, except maybe not enough case studies. The ones that are there are fantastic but when you find a good thing you want a lot of it, some people may justifiably think that the case studies are anecdotal, however with a bit more research a lot of the best practices seem to replicate across multiple personal and company profiles.
I give it a 5 out of 5 stars for the content, the resources and most importantly the infused courage to write on what I always wrongly feared to be a difficult social network. I look forward to reading more of the author’s work.

Sandra Long has written the definitive guide to personal branding on LinkedIn. The author provides an A to Z overview of how to establish and amplify your “best you” persona (what you want to be known for--knowledge, skill and personality) on the world’s biggest professional online community.
In her thorough review of all LinkedIn sections, she offers both strategic advice and practical tips to help the reader create their winning profile and establish their presence through content creation and relationship-building. I learned so much about the foundations of branding and networking on LinkedIn.
Another highlight is the author’s guidance on the different brand-communicating activities, including posting articles, making mentions, and recommending and endorsing others. My biggest change is to spend more time liking and commenting on the other’s posts, something I only sporadically did because I didn’t see it as a way to express my personal brand. It is.
Sandra Long provides fresh perspectives on many new LinkedIn features, including the about essay, featured section and professional portfolio. The author shares and demonstrates how you can communicate your personal brand using this new functionality. Examples of profiles, including the author’s, illustrate the key points and helped me redesign my profile.
There is value for everyone in this book, from people looking to create a personal brand, extend the value they provide to their community, build awareness for their services, seek a job or find sales leads. It is a must-have resource if you want to create a professional, consistent, interesting and compelling personal brand on the largest professional online platform. Every chapter will give you ways to communicate your “best you” to achieve your goals. Why not invest in your future now?
Decent read on all the things that one can do to improve branding on LinkedIn
Most of the suggestions are known in some way or the other; However, all of it has been put together in a structured format.
Main thing is not about reading the book but following the suggestions given.
Here are my top takeaways: 1. Profile section should be complete and updated all the time. Not one or two sections of it but every possible section of profile page. 2. Engaging on Linkedin is not just posting content but responding/ commenting to others' posts as well 3. Learning or creating a niche will help
I thought I was doing well on LinkedIn. I was getting profile views, as well as impressions and comments on my posts. Perhaps I just needed to just post more?
Sandra Long makes it clear it’s doing the right things that matter. Her book provides clear explanation of how to build a complete LinkedIn profile. Sandra pointed out the different sections of my profile that I didn’t know existed.
Just as important is what you post. An area where I need to improve is promoting others. That’s advice I will take to heart.
Highly recommend reading the book and following Sandra on LinkedIn. She constantly shares ideas that will help us all improve.
I highly recommend this book for its readability, practical advice and insights for bolstering profile LinkedIn profiles, communicating personal brand voice, and making the best possible first impression of your genuine self.
The book also offers advice on posts, content, and amalgamating everything relevant about personal and professional brands in one place.
I’ve easily read a dozen books on LinkedIn. This is easily the most comprehensive of them all!
Solid enough book. Nothing eye-opening or specific about getting leads, clients, sales and profits though which is a shame as that's the end-goal for most people on LinkedIn (unless they want job opportunities...in which case the book doesn't give any specific advice about that either)
