The orimallys flower storyline was a little slow-moving for me, but I liked the antisocial nobleman as a new character! I hope we get to see him again.
Shirayuki and Zen dancing (or...spinning?) was so cute!
And Ryu--about to have a growth spurt? I'm not sure I'm ready for that! 😭

Another just fine volume though I do like the cover of this one.

The plot just kinda meanders along but at least Zen and Shirayuki spent some time together even though I’m still a bit confused on how Zen got drunk from eating one chocolate? Is that even possible? If so, I’m going to be EXTREMELY careful about what chocolates I eat in the future… 👀

And the whole detailed explanation about the plant…yeah, I’m with Obi on that one. 🤯😴 Just BORING. I instantly checked out when all that tried to cram into my science hating brain, lol. 😆

It was fine. Hopefully things get better… *sigh*

‼️Content‼️

Language: what the heck; geez; what the

Sexual: mild suggestive hints; two characters end up sleeping in the same bed together (not sexually; their friends just put them there)

Drug/Alcohol: characters drink; a character eats an alcoholic laced chocolate and gets drunk/knocked out

Shirayuki and Obi continue their pursuit of an elusive researcher. Zen and company… don’t do very much at all. You, as the reader, will be well prepared for your graduation course in fantasy made-up botany and may your degree bring you gainful employment.

This flower and rock storyline did what I thought was impossible and it made me dislike this series. I’m not dropping it or anything, but this is hands down the worst this title has ever been. A low fantasy story brought even lower by a mind-numbing focus on minutiae.

There is a little world building and then there is the utterly indulgent navel gazing that goes on here. Page after page of text explaining fake science we don’t need to know in detail I can’t imagine many people wanted.

I don’t mind giving Shirayuki a complicated problem to solve (in fact, this very much feels like the monkey’s paw version of my wish that she have more independence) but I know there was a better way to present it than this.

The soirée promised so much more than it delivered - ending up focused on Shirayuki getting her meeting with the researcher and little else. King Brother picks on Zen, who gets drunk off an alcohol-infused chocolate (because that trope needed to come back), and our two leads are together barely at all.

The best scene is when the apothecaries go into business because they need money, but that’s merely just okay (I legitimately expect better from this series) and features the return of somebody I very vaguely remember but am clearly meant to have an attachment to.

The problem gets solved by judicious application of something telegraphed earlier, a clear instance of Chekhov’s Pestle. By this point I was literally skimming the text, which I have never, ever done in a manga before.

Last volume had this exact problem, but the side story and one shot were good enough to buoy it up. There is no such escape built into this and the pages felt like lead by the time I reached the ending. The rules for Death Note were
less convoluted.

2 stars - arguably 2.5 for the sumptuous art, but this did not work for me at all. I never thought I would see the day for this series. However, stripped of the romance, adventure, and camaraderie, we’re left with the academia, which, with all due apologies, is definitely not my hero.

"Snow White with the Red Hair" is fantasy-type manga that takes place in a faraway kingdom. At the beginning of the tale, Shirayuki wants to become an herbalist, but the prince of Tanbarun is planning to make her his concubine! She makes a run for it and encounters Zen, the second prince of the nearby kingdom of Wisteria. Zen helps her escape from her plight and escorts her to his kingdom, where she becomes a full-fledged court herbalist. The rest of the story follows their adventures together (and apart!) as they develop deeper feelings for one another and work to overcome the gap between their social stations.

What impressed me the most about this story was how balanced the characters were. Often, characters are written with extreme characteristics and stereotypes. While this can be funny and distinctive, it can also get old after a while. It was refreshing to see that Shirayuki wasn’t a helpless princess, nor was she refusing assistance. She certainly did want to do things for herself and on her own, but she wasn’t above accepting help when she needed it. Even Zen, despite his stubbornness and rule-flouting tendencies, didn’t just rush off to do whatever he wanted all the time. Instead, he faithfully played the role of prince and followed his duty rather than his emotions.

Personally, I find it so much easier to connect with a character who knows how to flex and adapt as their situation changes. Plus, it was so exciting to see these characters build their relationship the “right way,” by working through the rules and customs of their world so they could perform the roles they’d been given to the best of their abilities.

I have more to say on this series (and other books!) in my blog! Check it out here:

VIDEO REVIEW HERE: https://youtu.be/dhpXbTpwxYc

I find it ironic that I said I really liked Shirayuki being at Lilias, but after the chapters with the soiree, I was NOT ready for our gang to be split up once more and actually put the book down! *cries*

I really really loved seeing our gang reunited, and especially liked Shirayuki and Obi going undercover of sorts to go talk to Rata! They make such a great duo and absolutely love seeing them side-by-side. I think if Obi didn't go with Shirayuki, I would have been REALLY bummed because while I love all these characters, Obi just seems at home being by Shirayuki's side.

Now speaking of Rata before, I love our grumpy noble! LOL! I hope we see him again after this volume because for all his grumpiness and keeping people wayyyy past arm's length, he does have a little part of him that's caring and wants to help these researchers. I've definitely enjoyed seeing him watch two of our research members work on everything with the wunderock because these chapters have been really interesting. More than once I caught myself leaning forward slightly and hoping that their experiments would work or if the experiment didn't work, finding myself really bummed and leaning backward on their behalf.

Another wonderful volume in this series! I'm glad we get to see more of Lilias even if I did put the volume down because I was bummed we were heading back to Lilias. LOL! I'm curious to see what's going to happen next!

Review:

This one was a slightly boring volume. I like all the parts with Zen, Kiki, and Mitsuhide at the palace. The prank that Zen's brother played on him was pretty funny.

But, all the details of them making the rocks with the seeds felt tedious. Perhaps I just wasn't understanding what they were doing, the details just weren't making sense to me. I did skim over a lot of that because I found it kind of boring.

I hope the next volume gives insight into what Zen and his team are up to while Obi and Shirayuki are up north. I do like these characters better when they interact with each other.

I really hope that the full two years aren't completely covered. I wouldn't mind a time jump or something to get her and Zen back together quicker and move that plot forward faster.

*Review of Volumes 13-15*
The whole dynamic is so different with the gang separated. Most of the focus is on Shirayuki, so we don't even see Mitsuhide, Kiki, and Zen that often. At the castle, Mitsuhide makes fun of Zen and Kiki makes fun of Mitsuhide. I have a blast at the castle. But at Lilas, Obi dials down on his sly remarks because his relationship with Shirayuki is more polite. And all the people at Lilas are so cold. I mean figuratively and literally. There's a lot more focus on botany, which I genuinely find very interesting. So, it's just become less relationship focused. Shirayuki is doing a great job taking charge as always, but I really would prefer her being proactive regarding more difficult hardships.

When it comes to the science in this volume, I don’t really understand what they are doing. However, I think that the last part of this volume was explained in a way that people get the gist of the procedure that they are trying to accomplish.

….While I might not remember the logistics, I remember feeling the enthusiasm that the team was feeling throughout the procedure regarding the seeds. I flew through this volume! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ Then, I had to go to work, so I had to stop reading before the oneshot mark. I have some good news, though!!!!!! THERE WAS NO ONESHOT!!!!!!!! A full volume packed to the brim with Shirayuki and the gang is what I read today! (*•̀ᴗ•́*)و ̑̑

orymmallys and wunderock research volume! tbh i'm not sure i fully understand the research esp bc it's been a while since i read the last volume so i don't remember much of the details but i loved how passionate the whole team was over their research it just affected me in a vv particular way idk i love it when people love their work and seeing them all working on their research made me emotional 🥹💗

there were also brief obizenyuki scenes but i treasure all those panels deeply especially the one where zen tugs obiyuki back and tells them "we'll be watching you" screaming crying kicking my feet in the air MAHAL NA MAHAL KO SILA OBIZENYUKI KO 😭😭😭😭😭 also the art for the chapter cover of chapter 70 was STUNNING definitely one of my faves so far <333

A fun volume! I enjoyed the soiree and meeting the elusive Rata Forenzo, a scholar of wunderock. He’s antisocial and a little grumpy for a reason. I liked his character and think he secretly liked helping with Shirayuki and the other researchers. She has that effect on everyone. I loved Shirayuki’s bold conviction and determination about her future when she spoke with Izana and Zen. Following the research team’s new path thanks to Rata’s assistance was a little confusing but the ending of the volume was satisfying.

The soirée was just to find that grump Rata. And then when Zen and Shirayuki get to be alone, Zen gets drunk and expresses some jealousy just for Shirayuki to giggle? She calls Zen a friend to his brother? Are they together or not? I don’t like the uncertainty and that both Shirayuki AND Zen are both blushing idiots when it comes to love. I want them to have a full conversation please! Some sweet bonding time! Alone! No interruptions!!!
Then the remainder of the volume was about the wunderocks and to be honest, I was so bored. But they figured it out yay! LOL

Objective: Research Wunderstones that generate heat so that it can be applied to Orimmallys seeds in order for them to generate light without being poisonous.

Step 1: Convince Rata to assist the team and share his knowledge
Step 2: Finance Wunderstone research
Step 3: Research, Test, Try, Fail, Repeat until Success

Very quest objective driven storyline, but the part where Zen gets drunk and falls out of bed was hilarious.

Sadly this series is starting to lose me. This volume was kind of boring if I’m being honest. It is such a shame because I really loved the beginning of this series. These last few volumes have been rough. I think I will give this series one more book to turn things around. Hoping the next one is better!

The stone specialist is a bit grumpy but loves progress and helps the herbalists. The author tried to explain the scientific process but I didn't understand at all. Cute scene when Zen found Shirayuki in his bed. A long journey waits for Shirayuki and Ryu to spread the new breakthrough. Nice chapter covers.

Okay a little more happens in this volume than the last thankfully! Obi and Shirayuki return briefly for a soiree at the palace, the Lilias group works on the Orimmallys project, and Shirayuki and Obi go on a search for a noble rock specialist/geologist to help out with the project. A good volume that had a bit of action and movement with still some sweet moments between the group.

Same review for all volumes:

Watched the anime and knew that the story continued in the manga. It's light fluff. I know that the premise requires Shirayuki and Zen to be together but it would have been more interesting to me if along the way they realized that they are better as supportive friends and she ended up with Obi. Also, she just utters "Zen" way too often.

Another great book in the series. Be still my heart-Royal Soirée with Shirayuki & Zen time together after. More King Izana and his mysterious sneakiness.
Lots of scientific stuff in the second half make sure you are paying attention. I don’t feel like I fully got all of it. And on to the next one. I think I may even have it from the library.

Thanks to Prince Zen Shirayuki & Obi manages to catch up with Lata Forzeno when he was forced to attend the Night Banquet.
Lata teaches Shirayuki & Suza into making of the Glitter Crystal Stone & the almost reaching the climax of the Olin Maris research.

Just my personal opinion, but the research part should not be dragged on for this long. It was quite redundant. I liked all the other "career-related" scenes but this time uh uh. The entire volume was only that. Can't wait for some more Shirayuki-Zen scenes in the next volumes, hopefully lol
