Forty years old and starting over. And not sure where home was going to be.
Chief Master Sergeant Cameron Freeland had a few job prospects but nothing that sparked much interest. And now… his flight was grounded, and he was stranded in an airport. At least, he could kill time in the USO.
A chance meeting there altered his decision, and he boarded his plane to Hope City with an interview for the job of his dreams.
Single mom, Mercy Cahill faced life and death struggles every day to protect herself and her daughter. Now hiding under a bridge in a homeless community, she needed was a break, a job, and a home somewhere her ex couldn't reach them.
Cam's new job as a special investigator took him to the cardboard cottages, where he met Destiny, the little girl with the big green eyes and her mother. Involving himself deeper with the mother and daughter was a mistake but leaving them in that place was impossible. If only Mercy would trust him, he'd give her shattered heart a home.

My Heart’s Home is the first book in a multi author series and Wow! This story kicked it off perfectly.
“My heart’s home is wherever you are.”
From the USO lounge at the Atlanta airport to the homeless “cardboard” village in Hope City, Cam Freeland’s life changes more than he could ever imagine after leaving the Air Force and heading back “home” to Hope City.
“All those nights of quiet whispers about our dreams, hopes, and even our pasts. I will never be the same person I was before I met you. You have my love. Not because you deserve it but because we built it, whisper by whisper.”
This story was more than I expected, more emotional, more sweet and swoony, more heartbreaking and eye-opening. After reading this first story I’m even more excited for the rest of this series. -5 Stars-
Interesting story. Hero, Cameron, is out of military due retiring. Gets job opportunity due to woman named Blessing at USO. While on undercover assignment as a homeless vet meets heroine, Mercy and daughter Destiny. They are in hiding due to crazy and abusive ex. The show of homelessness was sad and a slap of reality in that many can end up there and their stories all vary. I think the overall feel was for me sad but it had light moments. It's wasn't a bad story but due to how it made me feel a little down it was hard to get past that.
This one rugged so hard on my heart. After retiring as a Chief in the Air Force r, Cam moved back home to start the next chapter of his life. He found a job and went undercover. This assignment led him on a journey that would forever change his life. That is where he meets Mercy, her daughter, Bull and Punt. This story was so well written that I couldn’t put it down. It makes me want to ensure I do my part in the world and give back. Every small bit helps.
So so good and well well written need to come back when I have time and comment more on the author's apparent research which totally enhanced the plot and tugged my heartstrings.
Cam is retiring from the Air Force when on his way home he’s force to spend the night in Atlanta in the USO where Blessings was keeping open and giving him a lead on his new life. Mercy and her daughter are hiding in a homeless camp from a terrifying ex that’s where Cam meets them during an undercover assignment. I enjoyed this book so much and can’t wait for the other 3 written by different authors.
This is the first of the series A Long Road Home, a collection of books by a wonderful set of authors (I am an avid fan of many of these books). A retired serviceman, on assignment, meets a single mom and her daughter in the most unexpected environment. Wow. An unexpected look at what can happen "there but by the grace of God". A great book and one that provokes many thoughts. Bravo! I am looking forward to more books in the series and also to branching out to my loved authors (note: this is a standalone romance but several beloved characters found here are also in the other authors's series). Cannot wait!!
I don't even know how to write this review. This series will be a definite must read. There are so many amazing things about this story but some really bad things that led the meeting of all these awesome characters. I can't wait to see where they go from here!!!
I wasn’t paying attention when I started this, but it didn’t take me long to get irritated and check who the author was…and yup…one I would block if I could.
First, the MMC is pure cringe. Arrogant…and not in that supposedly sexy alpha protector way. He’s so quick to dole out trite, unsolicited, and incredibly insensitive advice that’s fit for a clearance bin motivational calendar. How dare he tell an abused teenage girl thrown into a wall by her abuser how she’s supposed to talk about him and what she can and can’t say.
Speaking of, I’m so over the gender-based double standard around swearing in romance novels. It’s perfectly OK, and even considered hot, for the MMC to swear like it’s his job. But FMC’s are anointed if they keep their mouths clean from those awful, terrible, icky words. Give me a break. It’s an automatic eye roll worthy FMC if that’s the trope-y way an author chooses to show the FMC is just such a good person.
Anyway…this author is well published enough that she can hire proofreaders or should fire the ones she has. Cost <> caused, irreplicable <> irreplaceable, and it’s Richard GERE, not GREER…among many other obvious grammatical and basic factual errors in this (and all the other books of here that I’ve read).
Back to the MMC…he became downright creepy after they got together. Simping is not attractive. He redeemed himself a bit in the middle of the book, but by the last 1/4th, was back to painfully servile.
The FMC wasn’t winning any IQ contests either.
Last and possibly most important…if you are looking for ANY semblance of a climactic point ANYWHERE in this story, THERE ISN’T ONE. This book is probably one of the most disappointingly jumbled-together collection of non-meaningful and/or pointless storyline moments I’ve ever read.
Just a total disappointment from an author I wish Kindle Unlimited would let me block.
I thank all of our service men and women and their families for their service and many sacrifices that are made for all of us to be safe. I love how Cam ran into some of the other service members and I want to say gave them some hope for whatever the future holds for them. I've read several of these stories talking about the Cottage where so many homeless live and it's so heartbreaking for anyone to live this way; but especially our veterans. It was sad to know that Mercy and her daughter Destiny were living there because of Mercy's ex boyfriend cop that had abused her and was starting on Destiny as well and Cam was working undercover for the DA's office to find a witness and he fell in love with Mercy and Destiny and became friends with Punt whom was undercover for the FBI, and also friends with Bull whom also served, but started drinking and blamed everyone but himself and wound up losing his wife and son, until the undercover op was over and Cam had him come live in his basement apartment, and then got in touch with his ex wife and she allowed their son to visit him and now they are dating and getting to know each other again. Yay for them and yay for Cam and Mercy also since they're getting married. Very glad that Aunt Kelsey was able to get her husband to put Ian the murderer behind bars for many years and also for the retrial from Mercy's testimony to get even more time behind bars. Looks like she escaped just in time since he was accused of three other murders. I know there are a great many of really good and respectful cops out there that protect us daily, but sadly their are some dirty ones as well. I really hope that Mercy will be able to get more assistance and necessities for the homeless camp with her new job, because she lived through it so she will have a better understanding of what's needed. Happy reading.
New to me author, l couldn't put it down 👍 definitely recommend
what a lovely way to end this story 😍
this is the second author I have read in this series 'The Long road Home'. having first read Caitlyn O'Leary who I will read each new offering, I love reading her stories.
this story flows through the plot in a seamless woven tale of old lives starting anew, from Cam who is retiring from his Air Force life, with his stay over in the lovely empathetic Blessing's USO lounge at the airport. (Blessing is the key character that seems to be in each of the books, S she was also in Caitlyn O'Leary story) her almost profetic conversations with her clients is a highlight of this series for me, she's like a guiding angel sending these weary warriors on the path to happiness.
Cams new life in Hope as an investigator for the DA, is what leads him to the destiny Blessing hinted at.
Mercy, and Destiny are on the run, hiding within the homeless community in Hope. now I'm not going to tell you the plot, but it may trigger some readers, not saying that it's graphic, but the author has done a great job in creating a realistic DV situation between Mercy and her ex Ian. I think she did a great job in writing this scenario. the section set in the homeless community was well done too, both Cam's and the reader's eyes are opened up to the world where unfortunate circumstances lead people to a life never imagined. I've literally read 90%of this book in one night, I would have finished it in one go but for my hubby moaning because it was gon 2am 🫣. I will be checking out this authors other books, as I just loved her writing style.
This was quite an emotional journey that started in the USO section of the Atlanta airport due to a hurricane named Helen and a wonderful hostess named Blessing. Chief Master Sergeant Cameron Freeland was heading home to Hope City but had no inkling of what he wanted to do job-wise. He meets Blessing and she has a contact who just might be able to help him get his dream job. One thing leads to another and he meets Mercy and Destiny Cahill and his life begins again.
Ms. Michaels wrote a powerful, emotionally charged story about two homeless people and the "Cardboard Cottages" they live in. Homelessness is a sensitive subject and one that needs to be visited. Ms. Michaels did this well, she didn't preach about it or try to solve the problem, she simply told a story. A story that will open your eyes and remind you that every homeless person has a story and it's not always their fault. Mercy and Destiny's circumstances are a perfect example. In fact, being homeless saved their lives.
This story was gripping and had me tearing up a few times. It is a must-read and what a way to start a series with other authors. We learn a bit about the others in this story and I found myself wanted to know their stories as well. That is in my opinion is the sign of a wonderful story. This story will stay with me long after I have read it.
Cameron Freeland was fresh out of the military, without a plan. His family died during Cam’s tours and he didn’t have a job but his savings, pension after years of service and owning the family home would help until the right one comes along. A hurricane delayed the next leg of his journey and conversation with a USO hostess opened the door to the job Cam wanted badly. Settled in Hope City and with a good grasp of his job, Cam’s offered a critical undercover assignment; find a critical witness that may or may not be hiding in or near a homeless community under an overpass at the docks.
A day into the assignment Cam had to rethink how much he had to be thankful for as he looked for his prey. He did find him but he did see a green-eyed, auburn-haired beauty keeping a close eye on a teen-version of herself. He wanted to know her story and soon knew single mom, Mercy Cahill and teen daughter Destiny were on the run, had been there two years and the shelter wasn’t an option! Drug abuse and other savory elements cause frequent police harassment. Cam sees his prey during a raid but the man moved too quickly and police corruption is a concern as Cam tries to watch over Mercy and Destiny. Rating: 4.25stars
I could go on an on about this story but suffice it to say that it was an absolutely heartwarming, eye opening, uplifting and extremely beautiful story of survival, love and the beauty of caring for others..... I fell in love with Cam during the first chapter and he just got better and better as the story proceeded.... This was a very meaty story.... No one could read it and not count their blessings!!! The love story between Mercy and Cam, interspersed throughout the mysteries and action, was steamy and sweet and actually perfect. The friendships that developed were meaningful and life changing. I highly recommend this book. Kris Michaels is one of my favorite authors and once again she has written a book that is deftly crafted. One that takes us on a journey that is perfectly balanced between weighted subjects and uplifting love and kindness!!! There were moments during the story that I had tears in my eyes...some from sadness and then near the end... Tears of joy. I am so glad I got to read this wonderful book... I know the story will stay with me for a long time. 😇
The beginning of this story introduces a few characters that meet in an airport but head off in separate directions to begin the rest of their lives and are written by other authors. The first story is “My Heart’s Home” written by Kris Michaels and focuses on Cameron who meets Blessing at the airport and she is able to help him get his dream job in Hope City. When Cameron is working in Hope City he goes undercover as a homeless person to find a dangerous man. It is his experiences that draw you into this story. The way the author expresses this story is touching and enlightening. Cameron meets Mercy and her daughter Destiny and they teach him how to survive. Kris Michaels is able to make you feel the emotional journey that all three characters go on. There is a powerful connection between Cameron, Mercy and Destiny and with the author’s words this story just touched and grabbed my soul. My Heart’s Home is a fantastic start for The Long Road Home series. Can’t wait to read the rest of the stories.
If this first book in the Long Road Home series is any indication then this series is going to be a real success. Five authors got together and decided on a premise. Kris Michael's opened up the series by introducing us to the main players and then giving us a story about one of them. Cam's story is beautifully written. A serviceman gets out of the military and has to start over again in civilian life by finding a new career. That career leads him to meeting Mercy and her daughter. Ms. Michael's gives us a story of survival and hope by showing us the tragedy as well as the community of the homeless. Mothers looking out for each other and their children, veterans, who for various reasons find themselves on the street, and how some turn to drugs to make it through the day. An eye opening experience and a great read. I look forward to the next book in this series and I hope we get to see Blessing (who I think is a guardian angel) again. No cliff hangers. These books are all standalone. Brilliant work.
Cam is retired from the Air Force. On arriving at a connection airport, he finds that a hurricane is blowing through. Since all flights are canceled, he decides to stop at the USO. It is scheduled to close, but the coordinator allows him in, and brings him to a conference room with comfortable chairs where he and the four other servicemen can wait out the storm. When she finds that he is going to Hope City, she tells him of a possible job connection there. When he arrives home, he gets the job, and makes a mark. He is asked to take on a special undercover job, locating an important witness who has disappeared. The life of a homeless man is awful; the life of a single mother with a young teenage daughter fleeing an abusive relationship is immeasurably more difficult. Their stories intertwine and they finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
A Hearts Home is such a beautiful story! Truly a Great Read!
The strength and determination that Mercy shows is admirable. Regardless of what life has thrown at her she does all she can to protect and provide for her child. That spoke to me so much throughout this story. Good Moms are like your own personal superhero, and that’s exactly what Mercy was.
This story also shined a light on something I honestly know nothing about, made me rethink my view on homelessness. One of the things I love about Kris Michaels stories she shows me a world I never knew existed, changes my point of view on things I thought I knew, an overall incredible storyteller.
No plot spoilers No potential triggers There are just a couple of editorial/grammatical errors. The characterisation, as ever from Kris Michaels, is outstanding with both lead and supporting characters shining examples of how to draw a character. The plotline is engaging, if a little slow to start as the book builds the strongest possible background for Cam and introducing the desperate conditions in Cardboard Cottages for Mercy and Destiny. The descriptors used by Ms Michaels weave such a picture you can almost touch those shacks and tents. The story of hope and redemption is inspiring and the love interest is so beautifully written. There are a few sex scenes and a little swearing. I have no problem recommending the book.
Book one in a multi author series and I knew from the first blurb that it was going to pull at me. A new military vet is jobless and homeless until a good word in his ear puts him on a path to a job as a detective. Sent to a homeless camp to work undercover he finds a single mom and her daughter in desperate need of help and someone to lean on. The book addresses the homeless issue kindly but face first and pulls no punches. How the man comes to deal with the mother and daughter, friends made among the homeless, and the abuses he sees added to their already rough lives is handled tastefully and directly. Will tug at your heartstrings and give you some stuff to think about while finding a HEA for all the main characters. Don't miss this one.
I loved this Book 1 and will now be reading the other 4 books in this Series. Each book has a different author. The story begins in the Atlanta airport as 5 military men from different branches of service are heading home. They form a connection as they wait for the weather to clear and their flights to resume. This story is about Cam who is retiring and heading home to figure out what to do with his life. He ends up being asked to work undercover at a homeless village trying to find a bad guy. His assignment is going to change his life. I loved the depth this story went into about the people, the circumstances, and the will to survive or to give up for the homeless. I would highly recommend this book.
I can't imagine what it would be like to be homeless and living in a camp like that especially to stay hidden from you ex who is an ex cop and has threatened to kill you many times. Mercy thinks that all men are like her ex and has a hard time trusting anyone. When Cam first get to the encampment and sees Mercy he knows she is running from something. Although he is working undercover as a homeless man, he gets a hard and fast education in what it is really and truly like to bee homeless. What happens when he finally catches the guy he was looking for? He realizes that not everyone is who they appear to be in the encampment. What does he do about his feelings for Mercy and her daughter?
This was a good book. I stayed up past 3am on a work night because I couldn’t put it down. At first, I wasn’t sure about reading a book that deals with life a homeless person as I was worried it would be too depressing. Kris Michaels did a great job writing this and although we get an insight on the difficulty of living on the streets, it’s without the desolation and scariness. It didn’t drag me down. We get to see Cam being a protector to Mercy and her daughter. The plot was intriguing and kept me enthralled. There were a few plot twist that got surprised me. No drama or angst. The ending was great as she did a good job showing how their life is after they went to live with Cam. I liked seeing their relationship grow more and more each day.
Kris Michaels starts off this series called 'A long road home' with the first installment- 'My hearts home.' Each book in the series will be written by a different author. This was an awsome start to the collection and I loved the characters. The two main characters had back stories leading them to a place where you wouldn't necessarily expect a romance story to be set. Although it is tied in to the Hope City series (by Kris Michaels & Maryann Jordan) you do not need to have read them as this is completely stand alone. It was good to see a few of the Hope City characters pop in and out of the story. An awsome read, fully recommended.
Cameron was on his way home when a hurricane caused a delay in Atlanta. He looked up the USO to spend the layover. Normally it closed at 8:30 because of the storm Ms Blessing was keeping it open overnight. When Ms Blessing found out where he was going and what sort of employment he was looking for she suggested calling her friend. Because of past experience and training they wanted him to go under cover in the homeless community. Ms Michaels spins a wonderful story. It is very easy to loose yourself and very hard to put down until it is finished
This is a most interesting book the detail just puts you right in middle of this homeless camp what people ha ve or have lost families, themselves self respect but the main point how they survive if they have the strengthto do so.Cam is working undercover he meets Meet Mercy and daughter Destiny he immediately tried to help them Mercy is hidding away from her abusive ex boyfriend. Cam make s friends with a few men one who is also undercover .these help to keep their part of the camp safe, there are few twists to the story but there is also respect and lots of love. Mercy has a wonderful surprise towards the end of the book,I found this book so interesting did not want it to finish
Single mom, homeless and afraid, learns trust can lead to happiness
Kris Michaels' book about the plight of the homeless will touch your heart. Mercy and her daughter lived through an abusive relationship that causes them to seek shelter in a cardboard home under a bridge. Cam, a veteran working for the DA's office, goes undercover as one of hundreds of homeless to search for a witness to a Ponzi scam. Trust must be gained and his identity kept quiet as he helps protect the compound. Can an everlasting be found with Mercy and her daughter? Only if he can protect them with his life. This is one of five books written by five fantastic authors. Worth the binge reading.
My Heart's Home is a fabulous romantic suspense by Kris Michaels. After 22 years Cam leaves the Air Force and found his dream job as an investigator with the DA's office. Mercy and her daughter are in hiding from her husband, a cop, and are living in a homeless encampment. Mercy and Cam's story will keep you glued to this book with plenty of drama, humor, spice, action and suspense. I loved this story. My Heart's Home is book 1 of The Long Road Home Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliffhanger.
I read a pint copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Chief Master Sergeant Cameron Freeland is forty years old and starting over after getting out of the military. He was going home but not knowing where it is. He gets stranded at the airport and meets Blessing at the island talk. She gives information for a job in Hope City. He goes home and gets the job. He goes undercover to find a man under the bridge in homeless community. He meets a single mom, Mercy Cahill. She ran away with her daughter from a very abusive man that really killed her. Cam meets them and is determined that he is going to protect them no matter what. He decides when he leaves he taking her with him.
I absolutely loved this story of Cam and Mercy with her daughter Destiny, set in the Hope City Cottages where the homeless have taken up residence❣️
Cam gets a job working as an investigator for the Hope City DA, when an opportunity arises that places him undercover in the homeless community better known as the Cottages😢Mercy and her daughter, Destiny have been living in the homeless community for a while after fleeing an abusive situation.
I am so happy I got to devour this book today and I can’t wait to read the rest of the stories in this series😍
