Nicely done.
Think of it as a lost space colony story that is getting rediscovered by people that don't always have their best interests in mind. Toss in a psychic or two and you have the basis of the story line.
I will point out that the characters are fully developed, interrelate and are interesting. Not everyone pulls that off well, L.E. Thomas did in this book.

Ashia by L.E. Thomas is a story about a young girl by the name of Shanda. Shanda is a slave girl in the desert to a man who has no real care for her at all. He treats her very badly and treats her as though he would like nothing more than to be rid of her at the end of the day. Often he asks her if she has dreams and she always denies that she has any dreams of significance always saying that she has dreams like any other person. She knows to fear him finding out that she does dream of things because of the hatred that the people have for those who do dreams…Seers…because they are hated and feared and usually die in the fires. But Shanda does dream of things to happen but she just doesn’t know it until one of her dreams comes true…she dreams of a man coming to their camp out of the desert and in the night…that is exactly what happens. But there is more to come. Her father is looking for her and is determined to find her and save her from the life that she has been living.
Shanda is found by her father and rescued but there is more ahead and to come for her. She meets another Seer like herself and is told that she must find a city that no one is even sure really exists. Trouble is coming from all sides and she must try to unite the people if they are to survive from one to the next. But she is skeptical and really wants no part of any of it but that is not what life or fate really has in mind for her.
When I first started this book and was introduced to Shanda I had hopes for her. She seemed like a nice gentle girl despite all that she had been through having to live the life of slave and being beaten and mistreated. But she begins to change when things get rougher for her after she is rescued by her father. She has moments of where she acts like a petulant child but she knows her responsibility nonetheless because it goes beyond her. She faces a lot and it’s good to see that there are those out there who care about her and who seek to do what they can to be there for her.
For me this is a good fantasy/scifi story that overall engages you to make you want to learn what is going to happen to the characters and to want to know more about the world that they reside in. You get lots of hints that…maybe they aren’t native to the planet that they are on…that maybe they have had to adjust and change to the world that they are on over generations. You get hints here and there and the pieces start to come together towards the end. There are some questions that remain unanswered at the end of this story but all in all it’s not a chore to read. You get engaged and you get more engaged in some spots than others but it’s an interesting book.
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. Ashia is an interesting book that takes you out into space to a world of where the people are broken up into four clans and one rules over the rest but something is coming that could destroy them all and it is up to Shanda to try and unite them inorder to save them and asks the question…will she be able to do it…and will she be able to do it in time. If you are a fan of Science Fiction that I would recommend this book to you.

September 8, 2016Great book! I really hated for it to end. It drew me in to an enchanting land- a beautiful story of family and love and battle and a fascinating people. Ashia is so intense, and I enjoyed the story from the beginning, as the young woman Shanda goes from slavegirl to warrior. It's a gripping tale, with the loyal love of her life, Atillo, staying by her side, as she joins her true people and journeys to far-off lands. I really liked how the book is set over so many different settings, the desert, the ruling industry center, Ashia, the mountains, the Mazomi Cliffs, where Shanda's people are from; the sea and sky that Atillo sails his ships in, and the awesome land of ice and magical city, Khanga. It's such a great variety of places throughout the book. It's an amazing story, and I highly recommend it. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author, L.E. Thomas. I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

I had a bit of a slow start with this book. It was an interesting concept. Descendants of people who came from another world to this world. One group almost completely wiped out and another group suppressing the rest. I would be interested in seeing what happens with the people of the stars. I am hoping there is a sequel in the works. This book ended and I wasn't quite ready for it to end. It was definitely worth the read.

Lengthy and detailed descriptions dominate this enticing tale to its detriment. That being said, the young slave girl Ashia was a sympathetic character and easy to bond to for a reader. I was offered this galley by Read for Review for a honest appraisal.
